8/15/11   5     5     5     5     5   Both of my children (one girl, one boy) started going to this camp at age 7. It is the highlight of their summer each year. The have made friends from all over the world at Palmyra, Va! The counselors are full of personality & make the everything work - the activities, the organization. It is camp, in the wilderness, so don't expect 5 star accommodations & food. There is dirt, spiders, & occasional snake & turtle. If you are not open to people not exactly like you (they come from all over the planet - China, Russia, South America, Europe, & more - & you have a phobia toward dirt, trees, wildlife, then go to Club Med. They have campfire every night & a wide variety of activities throughout the day. I recommend half-day tennis or golf. They do have dances w/themes on Friday nights. If you want a same-sex camp then find one. This one encourages girls & boys from all over the world to interact in a supervised but fun atmosphere. I recommend 2 to 3 weeks before Aug. 13.  RID: 36723

6/13/11   1     2     4     2     5   I hated this camp so much. My counselors were the worst. I have never met more selfish people in my life. I remember crying because they were so mean to me. I was young at the time and did half-day riding. Though I had been riding for years and was in the highest level they offered and the entire time I was there (2 weeks) I didn't do more than walk. We literally didn't trot in 2 weeks of lessons. Sure, the facility was state of the art, but the instructors were the opposite. The horses were sweet and I met some friends there, but overall it was not an experience I would like to repeat.  RID: 36110

10/29/09   3     1     3     4     1   i have been going for 5 years, but next year im going to another camp. why? because nobody cares at camp friendship. it was fun to be there with all my friends, but no one cares about the activites, the food is absolutely horrible, i got sick soooo many times over the years and the nurses don't have any idea what theyre doing, and everybody cares too much about how they look because there are boys there!! there are many foreign people (especially french) and they have the nicest makeup and clothes and everyone else wants to be like them and theyre wasting their time....i would rather have a good clean traditional camp experience....but overall it was OKAY  RID: 31474

9/27/09   3     1     3     1     2   Mother Daughter Riding Weekend If you go, just go for the horse activities, stay at a hotel. The lodge is worse than disgusting. Don't expect a camp-like experience. If you want to meet people, you're on your own. The counselors are not really counselors. They are horseriding teachers. They know horses, not people. This place needs serious upgrades to the cabin. While the barn/stalls may be state of the art, the rest of the place is lacking.  RID: 31112

Click to report rating    5/1/09   5     5     5     5     5   I can't think of a better camp. PERIOD! Honestly, I've been going since I was young and they were some of the best weeks of my life. I'm absolutely surprised reading negative comments. Those people were obviously sour about something and it was extremely immature of them to post comments on this website saying "OHH, they only care about the money!" It's a great camp for all ages. The older you are the less restrictions and supervisions you have, which is good and absolutely needed. Younger kids are supervised when needed but also find time to chat among themselves away from counselors. Camp Friendship offers great activities and pretty good food. Young kids have bathrooms and showers in their cabins and older kids have communal washrooms. Cabins are wood and pretty sparse which I love. I think the bareness adds to the camp experience. Heck, if I wanted to stay in air conditioned dorms while at camp I would stay home! Just go! Try it out, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!  RID: 29637

Click to report rating    12/27/07   5     5     5     5     5   I have been going to this camp for 4 years, and I would never stop going. Every year I look foward to going back to camp starting the day i leave. I would never change camps. They have the nicest counselors who are not too old that they can relate and really help for any problems we have and advice we need. The food is AWESOME, and so are the facilities. I've made soooo many friends over the past 4 years and I'm still friends with them. I LOVE camp friendship!<3<3<3<3  RID: 18352

Click to report rating    11/13/07   5     4     5     5     5   My daughter absolutely loved Show Team at this camp. As a lifetime horse person, I shopped the east coast for a quality horse program. Friendship blew the others away. She attended for three years. She only stopped because she got too old! She still speaks highly of Davera (the owner). I think the general tone is "relaxed" but this worked well for my daughter.  RID: 17042

Click to report rating    2/25/07   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Friendship is absolutely the best camp that I have ever been to. The staff is friendly, the newly built stable and equipment creates the perfect environment for any equestrian inspired girl. It is almost as if you own a horse for your time at camp. I personally have participated in all of the various camps within Camp friendship. The tennis camp is phenomenal with a small instructor to camper ratio. I spent many summers in my youth in the younger camps and enjoyed the activities and new experiences such as candlemaking and kayaking. The summers that I spent in the older senior village canp, were also memorable. The staff was caring, but still left room for the campers to have their own personal space. The activities were certainly age appropriate and fun. The food was decent and much better than any other camp I had previously attended, yet not incredibly nutritious. Camp Friendship is a sure-fire way to have a memorable amazing summer.  RID: 8107

Click to report rating    2/21/07   5     5     5     5     5   I loved this camp. Though some campers were unpleasant, the staff was great. They took care of me when I was sick, were easy to talk to, and really great with the rest of the kids. It's CAMPING. The cabins weren't hotel rooms, but that's what made it fun.  RID: 7985

2/19/07   1     2     1     1     1   I hated this camp. I would not recommend it to ANYONE. The counselors were mean:for example, one female counselor repeatedly called my friends fat. The horses were horribly trained and the camp was only in it to make money-they couldn't care less about the kids. Also, the food was disgusting and the lodging atrocious. The only good thing was the brand new barn (the old one burned down)  RID: 7955

Click to report rating    1/12/07   5     4     5     5     4   Our kids have gone to this camp for years now. They absolutely love it. Counselors are well-trained and activities are very well structured and planned. We would highly recommend it.  RID: 6740

1/3/07   1     1     2     1     1   This camp is poorly supervised, with inappropriate housing of young teens -- my 7th grade daughter bunked with high school teenagers, which is a serious difference in maturity level. There was sexual misconduct with unsupervised coed contact, pranks akin to fraternity stunts, and open romantic liasons of counselors which prevented necessary focus on the campers' safety and well-being. Most appalling was the lack of concern by the camp director when informed of these events. My daughter's experience was traumatic -- I am not familiar with the younger camp, but would strongly urge parents of older children to find a highly-rated, well-supervised camp environment.  RID: 6434
