9/7/13   5     5     5     5     5   My girls love Kippy! They love their friends, their counselors, their activities...I wish they loved seeing me on visiting day as much as they love everything at Kippewa!! As a parent I love the communication I get from camp, that they get to choose their own schedule and how down to earth and welcoming all the other kids are. There isn't a day in our house that we don't talk about Kippewa or sing a camp song...top notch for our family!! RID: 45942

8/31/13   5     5     5     5     5   I just finished my 4th summer at kippewa and couldn't imagine spending my summer any other way. I've honestly had the best experiences of my life there. It makes me tear up to think that i have to wait another school year until I can return there again. The staff is amazing. You get to do amazing activities and do so many things you'd never get to do anywhere else. I also met the most amazing friends from all over the globe. I can't believe all these reviews trashing kippewa. I would rather be there then at my own home. I'd strongly encourage you to check out the website, call the directors, and get your daughter enrolled. I have had the time of my life there. Its something i wish I could do for the rest of my life. Honestly, your child is missing out on some of the best memories she could be creating at kippewa. Kippewa is my 2nd home and knowing my last year at camp is next year makes me cringe. I love kippewa so much and want as many girls as possible to get to experience Kippewa. RID: 45910

7/22/13   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter had a fabulous experience at this camp last summer and is back again having an amazing time. Kippewa has first-rate activities, wonderful counselors and great traditions. Kippy girls are a generally nice group and Ginger and Steve, the camp owners and directors are outstanding! They do really fun evening activities such as Kippy Olympics and Gold Rush! Weekly campfires, talent shows, socials, trips, and the famous "catch the cake" birthday tradition make it a lively camp with lots of spirit. There is something for every girl as they get to choose their own activities and my daughter enjoys having her choice of arts and sports. She loves being in the play, waterskiing, ceramics, softball and tennis. You can't go wrong with this camp. RID: 45299

7/15/13   4     3     3     1     1   I worked at this camp and it was awful! Over worked and under paid!! Not worth your time and what it costs to venture out there. Many counselors quit and left early, or never return again. The food is all carbs and no healthy alternatives! Making $2 an hour should be illegal for what you do for them! They try and talk the camp up in the interview by asking YOU what your favorite things are, and turn it around and say that it all happens at their camp and makes it sound like heaven to you. I don't even think the directors knew my name!! No free time and you HAVE to sign in by 1:00, so not even enough time to get away for a bit since you're not done putting the kids to sleep until at least 11:00. One off day every 2 weeks. WOULD NOT recommend working at this camp, unless you want to feel like you are in jail. RID: 45185

11/20/11   5     5     5     5     5   We know we made the right choice in sending our daughter to Kippewa! We have had such a great experience thus far, and look forward to many, many more years of excellent Kippy memories. Directors, Staff, Programs, Counselors, Bunks...all A+ in our book. We love the down to earth family feeling we get! Thank you Kippewa. RID: 37314

5/29/11   5     5     5     5     5   This is an amazing camp! Kippewa has amazing Staff, facilities, food, care, activities and more. It is the best place in the world and if your not sending your daughter here, you are missing an overnight camp for girls where they will have friends for life and learn new skills. Kippewa is the kindest most caring place and the best camp EVER! I love Kippy! RID: 35977

Click to report rating    12/11/10   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Kippewa is an amazing place. this is the new directors 3rd summer. They took the camp and made it into a wonderful place. everyone feels at home there and the staff is amazing. they are all like big sisters. This will be my 5th session. I had a horse back riding incident and though i would never ride again. The riding instructors got me back to riding and i cant stop. I love dancing during meals. Kippewa is a place where you can really be yourself. It is the perfect place for any girl! RID: 34572

9/7/10   5     4     5     4     4   I was a counselor in 2010 and was a staff member in the equestrian program. Any staff member that left, left on their own because of their own personal issues. The new directors are amazing and are not 'weird'. They dedicated a lot of their time during orientation to get us ready and prepared for campers, and did an amazing job of teaching us team building. They were ALWAYS avaliable when I needed them and Ginger is so sweet and understanding. The girls at camp had so much fun and learned so much! Any camper or counselor with a negative outlook on Camp Kippewa has a bad attitude and probably did not participate in their activities or bond with the kids. The only problems I had were with the other counselors not understanding the nature of my work, and that i actually did physical labor rather than sitting and sewing all day. But I loved it here and the camp took time to organize trips on days off for the staff so I could tour all of Maine. RID: 34001

9/2/10   5     5     5     5     4   The 7/29/10 rating is totally misleading. 2006 was the second to last year of the old directors. Camp is way better run now. RID: 33953

7/29/10   2     1     2     1     1   We sent our daughter here in the summer of 2006 and were VERY unhappy with the experience (We had been sending our older boys to Cobbossee for years and loved it). For one thing, her counselor was so disgusted with the place that she left in the middle of camp! (One of the best measures of a camp is how many of their counselors return each year.) Other girls only stayed for just a week at a time - making it much harder for girls who stayed longer to adjust. There were rodents in the cabins, also. The worst thing was when my daughter got lost going from the stable to the camp because she was allowed to walk on her own and no one knew about it for over an hour!! AND they didn't think they needed to CALL us about that RIGHT AWAY!! There are plenty of great camps in Maine - don't risk sending your child to this one!! RID: 33537

10/20/09   5     5     5     5     5   I love Kippewa! I made the best friends EVER, we still talk all of the time. Everyone is so nice, I had the best counselors. Ginger and Steve are great directors, they make the camp so much fun. If you are looking for a fun camp full of nice people then you should definitely go to Kippewa! RID: 31383

Click to report rating    2/18/09   5     5     5     5     4   The Camp has new directors! I worked here in 2008 and loved it. The old directors sold the camp and the new directors are a younger couple with lots of previous experience running girls camps. They kept all the traditions of Kippewa but also brought in new ideas and enthusiasim. Everyone had a great time! My only criticisim is that it seems very expensive. Choose this camp, you will love it. RID: 29031

Click to report rating    12/21/08   4     4     5     5     4   I attended for six summers in the nineties, and had a wonderful time, except for when the owners would fire counselors right and left. Marty and Silvia Silverman were hopelessly behind the times, and Paul and Jon were incompetent. Hopefully, the new owners will maintain the wonderful, supportive environment that I loved, while taking an more modern view on what constitutes equitable treatment for counselors, so that the campers will not have their memories tarnished with recollections of beloved counselors who disappeared. Click to report rating    6/3/08   5     5     5     5     5   I believe this camp is absolutely wonderful. the friends you make there you will keep for life and its such a beautiful place. Alot of camps ive seen the cabins are all stuck together but here there all spread out enough. I believe that this camp has something special to it and that everyone has a different experience at places so you shouldnt really judge on the ones that are all 1's because obviously there going to want to make it look bad. And finally i think someone shouldnt even judge what ive or others said because i believe you cant judge a book by its cover and that this stuff is only advice so you can follow it or not but ive been a camper for 10 years and this is my last summer as of 2008 and i know that these summers have impacted my life hugely. if i had never gone there i wouldnt have met half the people i know and i would not know how to do half the things i can. Kippewa has changed and impacted my life and for that i am thankful forever more. RID: 23554

Click to report rating    5/15/08   5     5     5     5     5   I've been going for three years and I think this year is going to be the best. The new director is super cool and I heard through friends she is awesome. I'll miss Marty, but things were getting boring and I don't think it will be that way with the new directors. RID: 23181

Click to report rating    4/10/08   5     5     5     5     5   I've attended MANY different camps, and i hated all of them except this one. This was truly best summer of my life, the best camp ever, and I'm very sad that I had to leave for personal reasons. The owners are a little different but very nice, good people. Send your daughter here. RID: 22161

Click to report rating    4/6/08   1     1     1     1     1   Every counselor who works here quits, gets fired, or never come back. this sets a very negative attitued for the campers. I had an awful time. The directors are way to weird. You learn the wrong aspects of life... RID: 22030

Click to report rating    3/14/08   5     5     5     5     5   Everyone who said something negaitive about this camp is wrong. I attended Kippewa for 6 summers, and they are truely unforgettable..I love the friends I have made as my sisters and I still keep in touch with them long after camp has ended. Jon Marty Sylvia and Paul are all a bit crazy, but are still the nicest sweetest people. This camp is great, send your kids there! RID: 21262

Click to report rating    2/7/08   1     2     2     1     1   I worked there for a very limited limited time. The directors more or less wasted my time, and my money, and needs some serious human resource skills. I felt awkward and I felt like they had not been clear about what they expected me to do. My job description had been shoddy at best during the interview and the fact that i did nothing while I was up there until I was let go after being blamed for things that I did not do, or was ill advised, still erks me. What is worse is that I seriously NEVER want to work at a camp again. RID: 19957

Click to report rating    12/27/07   3     4     4     5     2   Love this camp so much. I had the best summers of my life there, and will NEVER forget the amazing girls I met!! Sure, the Silvermans are a bit "off-beat" but they've created the most amazing camp on earth, so they can't take that much blame. They each have their good aspects (cookie-baking sessions with Sylvia, Jon's banjo...). Send your daughter there! She'll have the most fantastic summers of her life. RID: 18380

12/20/07   1     4     4     2     3   I just had to write this review after reading the others. I attended this camp in the 80s, it's funny how things never change. Surprisingly, I agree with all the reviews to some extent. From a camper's perspective, it was a lot of fun - good activities and the opportunity to make friends & memories. Were I a parent, I'd probably give Kippewa a great review, too. Facilities are very nice, & the kids do have a good time. BUT. The comments here about the owners are right on. Counselors DO frequently quit and get fired (for seemingly minor infractions). I was an older camper and was friends with some of the counselors, both American and international. ALL hated the experience. The international staff were paid peanuts, and as someone else mentioned, they had to pay all their own expenses if they did not finish the summer for some reason. Sylvia and Jon are ok, but Marty is an a-hole and Paul is very creepy. Not someone I'd want my daughter around that's for sure. Gave staff a 1 for owners. RID: 18179

Click to report rating    12/11/07   5     5     1     2     1   I worked at the camp 5 years ago. I still keep in contact with the other women I met, which is about the only good thing I can say. I don't trust the director or his sons. Since it was the first overnight camp I worked at I had nothing to compare it to. I have since worked at other camps and am now a teacher and a parent. In my personal and professional opinion no one should send there kids here, and please do not be fooled, do not work here. The director purposely hires an international staff. At the time this made the camp seem impressive to me, now I understand it’s because he can pay far less then Americans. However, even more insidious is that these workers can not quit since he only pays their flight and work visa if they stay. If they go they will loose money even if they have worked. I have never seen employees treated so badly. As far as the campers go, they do not learn much. They learn camp songs! but the real camp experience is missing. It’s time for this camp to close.  10/13/07   5     4     5     5     4   My daughter has attended Kippewa for 2 summers. I can honestly report from a parent's perspective that the owner's are NOT "mean" or "weird" as has been mentioned in one review. Kippewa has provided my daughter with 2 wonderful summers of activities and friendships. She's learned how to waterski, play tennis, sing scores of zany songs, and most importantly, looks upon returning with fondness and anticipation. Her counselors have been great, the setting is pristine and appropriately rustic, and the fellow campers are all happy, nice kids. I highly recommend Kippewa to girls looking for a smaller camp with lots of opportunity and fun in a beautiful setting. It's a camp afterall, not a country club! RID: 16163

Click to report rating    10/4/07   5     3     2     2     3   As a head of staff in the most important dept. I saw that all the staff were treated very poorly and were always scared they would get fired if they made even the smallest mistake. The owner seems to enjoy being mean to everyone and is inflexable to newer ideas. Very good and nice counselors quit or were fired because of this inflexability. The older son only cares about money and always complained about not having enough. The younger son is the son who sees the good that Kippewa can do and the fun. His father and brother undermine him at every turn. I would not reccommend this camp to any counseloror, camper or support staff unless the owner and one son step down from leadership. The campers used to always call the owner an A-hole. He is. RID: 15871

Click to report rating    3/19/07   5     5     5     5     5   The Silverman Family has dedicated their lives to children's camping at Kippewa for fifty years. They have welcomed my family to Kippewa on many occasions to visit and to be a part of Kippewa traditions. As founders, Marty and Sylvia had a dream to give young girls an opportunity for self-discovery; to make new friends, to build self-esteem and self-confidence; and to develop talents on a day-to-day basis. Kippewa is much more than a camp. It is a way of life! Furthermore, staffers are able to further develop life skills applicable to their professional life by investing themselves in their role as counselors. Campers and staff develop the life skill tools at Kippewa to be successful in all that they do!!! Kippewa has a little known, but well used, scholarship assistance program for campers. Funding from the scholarship program is a multi-year commitment to a camper so that she may go every summer until she is too old to attend. RID: 8791

Click to report rating    3/18/07   5     5     5     5     5   I was a camper at Camp Kippewa in 1970 and now 2007 I am so excited that my daughter will be attending my wonderful camp alma mater! The camp directors- Marty and Sylvia Silverman have invited us up to camp every summer for the past 20 years! We have laughed and loved, we have watched their attention to detail, expansion of programs blossom- they offer leather, stained glass, jewelry making, every water sport, mountain climbing, trips, canoeing- etc. The campus is well maintained, and the camp is family run. They utilize activity choice via computer programs- they are totally on board and current in their camp design and activity selection- I wish I could attend again! Your child will be so very fortunate to share in the Kippy traditions- see you at camp! nita- a proud Kippy alum and an even prouder mom! RID: 8782

Click to report rating    2/5/07   1     2     3     1     1   This is a dated review - I worked at Kippewa a few years back. The owners are crazy, and I mean this very seriously. Not crazy in a funny cute way, but crazy as in they need professional help. Workers are horribly taken advantage of, with very little time off, little pay, and no respect. Most of the councilors are young university kids trying to make a few dollars to pay tuition, but from my experience they were all really great with kids and enthusiastic... but treated like absolute dirt. I dont think that many were given the chance to shine and do a really great job, as they were worked to exhaustion and treated terribly. Looking back now, as I am now a parent, I would choose to send by children elsewhere. There a lot nicer camps out there, with way better conditions, facilities, and management. RID: 7562

Click to report rating    8/7/06   2     1     3     3     2   This is a dated review - my daughter went there several years ago. The camp is ugly and depressing - the cabins were deteriorated and the grounds neglected. In other camps I've seen, there is usually at least central landscaped area near the common areas - but here all the buildings, including run down ugly cabins, are perched in rocky weedy scraggly sparse woods.surrounded by rocky soil with a t amongst , If I had seen it, my daughter would have never gone there. The owners are cheap - they took advantage of the poor job market in Canada to hire and under pay Canadian girls as counselors who didn't seem to have a particular interest in kids or camping or any related skills- it was just the only job they could get. Substandard waterfront program - the only plus was water skiing. I don't recall a sailing program. No evidence of camping skills being taken seriously. This was run by a couple originally - now it's their son who has taken over and he knows nothing about girls, fr RID: 1869

Click to report rating    6/25/06   1     2     3     3     3   The camp is beautiful but the owners are incredibly strange and extremely stuck on their own ideas...completely inflexible. While the camp has some wonderful traditions, they are stuck in the 1950's. There is no ropes course and basically no sports to speak of. You can do much, much better for your child. RID: 1126
