I would not recommend this camp. I too worked here in the 2000's. Another poster wrote that the kids weren't disciplined because the administration thought that their parents paid a lot of money for their kid to have a good time. I'll take it one step further than that. A friend of mine (another counselor) had a 9-yr old girl her cabin who she thought - upon meeting her - had been a victim of sexual abuse. When we confronted the admin about it, they said "well let's just make sure she has a good summer." My friend being from New Zealand asked me "who do I call to report this?" I wish I could have told her, but we didn't have internet access and were lucky if we had time during our 24-hours-off every week to go into town and try to look it up. I myself took a bunch of 'misfit' kids under my wing because they were always left out by campers and counselors. Beautiful facilities, exhausted and generally good counselors. TERRIBLE administration. |

I went here for 6 years, and although the camp is not what it used to be. It is still an amazing place, and is my second home. There are so many memories made here, and it taught me so many vaulable lessons, and you meet some of your best friends here. The people here are some of the most incredible people that you would not find anywhere else. It is a place where you can be yourself, and try new things everyday, and learn something new. Something that is nice about this camp is that there are so many different opportunities to do and to try new things, and it has many activities that most camps do not offer. It also offers the opportunity to experience things you may not other wise be able to. I can honestly say that this place is one of a kind, and an incredible one. It has impacted my life greatly, and it will be my summer home. |

I was a CRAJ counselor in the 2000's. Camp was very understaffed, with child ratios of 1-20 and sometimes 1-25. The only reason children were well-taken care of was because the counselors my year made extraordinary efforts to be responsible--not because the administration was paying a lick of attention. Because camp was so understaffed, we often did not get our hour a day off, resulting in counselors who had not showered in three or four days. Our relationships with the administration was terrible. "International atmosphere"? Try "hiring foreigners who don't know their rights and can be treated like crap because they have no way to leave." The administration ran us ragged-working 15-19 hour days, and refused to discipline campers, at one point telling me "campers' parents paid a lot of money for them to have fun, and it's your job to make sure they have fun." I thought my job was to mentor and keep the kids safe! All couselors, including the men, cried at some point. |

I have gone through my entire life at CRAJ and it has been a wonderful experience. I have met so many great people and had so much fun at the various activities! I still am in touch with many of my friends throughout the years attending CRAJ and am hopefully going to go back as a counselor in later years. I have noticed that there have been some rough years in the past but the administration are making it through and I'm sure that there are going to be many great years in the future for CRAJ. I will definitely send my children there in the future. The ADK is a beautiful place and so is CRAJ. |

I also worked as a camp counselor here for one summer, in 1997. This was a while ago, so things may have changed, but the directors are still the same so I have my doubts. I agree with what previous reviewers have said about the adversarial relationship between administration and counselors. I had a high fever for several days and no one would drive me to the doctor; eventually I borrowed another counselor's car, drove to an ER and had my ear infection treated (for several hundred dollars, as I had no insurance through the camp!). There was inadequate food provided- counselors were often limited to 1 or 2 chicken nuggets to leave enough for the kids (insane for such and expensive camp). I had some good experiences, made some friends, and bonded with some wonderful kids, but I would NEVER send my children here or recommend this camp to a friend. |

My son attended last year. It was a superb confidence building experience. His cabin greatly appreciated the first counselors who left after two weeks to return to England and were less enthusiastic about the next counselor. He learned to sail and had full days of pleasurable activities. Some of the activities required daily sign-up after bed inspection but even though he made up his bed earlier than others he did not have inspection before others, that often precluded him from some activities. The cook was an improvement over the previous. They had plenty of food though nothing extravagant. He greatly enjoyed the canoe trip through the lakes. |

I had high expections of CRAJ based on the information I was given by the director. I have 2 children who attended and was an employee so we could get a better rate...Thank God I was there so I could experience everything that wasn't in the brochure...the bad attitude of the staff was very apparent the first day upon arriving and every employee I came across thereafter was either in a bad mood or part of a clique. The favoritism was quite apparent even down to where the directors sat for there meals. Snacks consisted of ice cream cones and when I snuck out (I was never given breaks as promised) to give my children something healthy, numerous children approached me asking for food because they were so hungry. I was yelled at numerous times for making suggestions about efficiency, cleanliness, time management, etc...Campfire time consisted of watching videos in the cabin...I could go on and on...we left after 6 days..it was a terrible experience. |

I met so many people from all over the world and everyone was loving and I was completly at home the first night there. The camp had givin me values and great memories and I hope to return one day as a counselor and give the kids there the same that I had once had. |

I went to Camp Regis-Applejack as a "Robin" when I was 8 yrs old - I am now 23. Other than the many activities, it was a disaster. The staff weren't very understanding or kind as they claim to be and truly didn't supervise as much as they should've. My mother threatened to sue the camp after one night I woke up in the middle of the night needing my asthma medication which the counselors held (because I was 8). I awoke to a cabin full of sleeping children and MISSING COUNSELORS. After begging one of the most unfriendly girls in the cabin to help me find them, we had to search through the woods trying to figure out where they could be - as I'm having an Asthma attack. We found the counselors at a cabin drinking and hanging out. Not just ours, at least 15 counselors. They were shocked to see us and rushed me back to the cabin to give me medicine and actually told me to please keep quiet about that. I would never send my children there. They just want your money. |

I worked at Regis-Applejack in the 90s and can attest to most of the negative things said about the camp. The administration created an adversarial relationship with the staff from the beginning, which trickled down to the campers. When one of the directors, Cris Gilliland, ordered a slouching counselor to "Sit up!" during an orientation meeting, I suspected it wouldn't be an easy summer. This was confirmed when she reprimanded me because a 6 year-old camper forgot my name during the first week of camp. She also falsely accused me of allowing campers to jump on their beds.
Numerous obstacles made it hard for me to do my job. I was the only male counselor in a cabin of 10 boys and only 6 girls (my 2 co-counselors were female). I was not even allowed to sleep in my own cabin. I told an administrator about how inconvenient this was, but nothing was done to change it. Instead, I was punished when I went to retrieve an item from my bunk. |

So I'm really sorry about the two people who didn't like CRAJ, and I'm truly sorry if either of you were in my Bunk, but Camp Regis AppleJack has given me an experience like no other. I went to CRAJ for 5 years, and i adored it and cherish those years deeply. They helped me regain confidence through the inclusion that living in a Bunk for a month can bring. Because of this, i was able to deal with almost anything life threw at me later. Sleep away camp, and CRAJ specifically was an experience like no other, and i highly recommend it to everyone. |

Camp Regis-Applejack is a wonderful experience. I was a counselor there in the mid eighties and returned when my children were old enough to attend. The friendships that are made at camp last a lifetime. In this day of computers and television, Camp Regis provides a welcome return to nature. |

This camp has personality, wonderful people, high rate of return for staff (so you know they love coming back) and a homey feeling. I have never had a better 4 summers. I have made friends here I will have for the rest of my life. Besides meeting amazing people and experiencing the Quaker traditions of the camp (which means Sunday morning meetings, town hall style where everyone talks-- even the 6 year olds, etc. but nothing obviously religious) which make the camp open, accepting and warm, the camp is just plain fun! I learned to sail a boat here and loved it! We swam all the time, played a lot of tetherball, and played sports when we wanted to. There was the perfect balance of freedom and structure. The trips are awesome! Jetboating in Montreal was tons of fun... This camp is very special for me, and I want other people to love it as much as i did! |

I went to this camp for one summer and though I thought I liked it, my mom didn't. There were issues with how the camp was run and I had a counselor who was down-right evil and made my experience just no fun. |

My children have attended Camp Regis-Applejack for the last five years; each year has been a wonderful, positive experience. The camp has preserved its Adirondack setting over its sixty-year history; the kids recognize and appreciate its beauty. The non-competitve atmosphere encourages participation in a wide range of activities, my kids have discovered many new interests and hobbies from their summers at Regis. The camp also does a great job in fostering a real sense of community and respect. Its a pleasure to see how much pride the kids take in the accomplishments of thier campmates. I have visited the camp many times (both during visiting days and 'normal' days); eaven a parent doesn't want to leave at the end of the day. We have had experience with every age group in the camp, and I can honestly say that they have all been great experiences. Our winters are filled with discussions about camp and camp friends, and excitement about the upcoming summer. |

Camp Regis offers a huge variety of interesting and enriching activities in an incredibly idyllic setting. Yes, it's as wonderful as it appears in the photographs/video/DVD! More importantly, it provides this in an environment where children feel respected and valued, where they learn lots of sporting and camping and creative skills, to be sure. But they also learn self-reliance, community, understanding and respect for one another - skills that will certainly help them better negotiate their world. My child returned from her first sleep away camp experience last year with a new confidence and assuredness. To see such personal growth in my daughter in such a short period of time, has convinced me this unique camp will be an important part of helping her shape a fulfilling life. |

My son has attended this camp since he was six. This year will make his 8th summer. Camp Regis attracts high quality, diverse camp counselors to complement its decidedly international style. Children meet others from all over and have the chance to learn through shared experiences. The facilities are traditional and well maintained. The setting is remarkable. We love Camp Regis. |
