Click to report rating    2/12/14   5     5     5     5     5   I attended Roaring Brook for three summers. During my first summer I crafted an Axe in the unbelievable workshop on the grounds. After finishing my two weeks at camp that summer, I would still cut wood in my yard just like I was at camp; I loved and missed it. From where I am sitting right now I can actually see a knife I crafted there as well. How many middle schoolers have made their own axes and knives? The camaraderie you build with your bunk mates is unparalleled; it is much more than your buddies on the football team. You fail, succeed, laugh, and learn together. As a camper you interact with counselors from all over the world with diverse backgrounds. I remember I first learned the schematics of the royal English Family from one of my counselors. In all, this camp will have a significant positive impact on those who attend it. Arrive with an open mind and you will be rewarded for years to come. RID: 46756

Click to report rating    2/12/14   5     5     5     5     5   Roaring Brook was one of the best experiences of my childhood, and is one I look back on fondly. Wilderness skills are a large part of what is taught, but RB is so much more than that. Leadership skills, self-reliance, and personal accountability were all huge things I brought out of it. Camp counselors are for the most part there from international camp-counselor organizations. As a kid, it was incredibly interesting and valuable to me be taught by and spend time with guys from around the world, with different life experiences from which I could pull lessons and meaning. Not only will RB keep your son active over the summer, it will teach him volumes about who he is. It will give him leadership experience, self-reliance, and most importantly, perspective on both becoming a man, and the world at large. I cannot recommend RB enough, if it's still around when I have children, there's no doubt where they'll be going to camp. RID: 46748

Click to report rating    7/14/13   5     5     5     5     5   We had two boys attend this camp, and I have to say that while the weather was a challenge, the quality of camp activities, camaraderie, and enthusiastic camp counselors made the experience outstanding. There is a respect for nature taught at camp that creates a foundation that should carry forward in our boys as they become men. They were among some of the younger boys at camp, but they were treated by respect by the other campers. No boy was left behind in activities. Recommended if you want an adventure experience where the boys do many activities on their own, including cooking, learning to start campfires (even when wet), and staying active without the distractions of electronics and video games. Thank you for that! We are excited to plan next year's camping experience. RID: 45175

Click to report rating    4/26/13   5     5     5     5     5   My boys (now ages 23 and 20) attended Roaring Brook Camp for several summers through Middle School and High School. My older son returned as an assistant counselor after he turned 18. I can honestly say that this camp virtually changed their lives. They went to Vermont from far, far away and although it was hard (on me) at first, I know this was a great decision. My younger son was homesick the first couple of weeks at camp, but he worked through it with the help of the great staff and directors. He couldn't wait to get back the next summer! The boys became fine strong young men, sensible and competent in the wilderness and self-confident in life. RID: 44353

Click to report rating    2/25/13   5     5     5     5     5   Both my brother and I attended Roaring Brook as children, and later on, became instructors. The camp has had a major effect on my life in a very positive way. I learned important life lessons and skills which have helped me succeed in sports, academics, and nearly every other facet of my life. The camp is one of a kind and has every activity a young adventurous boy could possibly want. Multiple backpacking trips and a week long canoe trip helped create memories I will cherish forever. This is an amazing experience for any boy. RID: 43808

Click to report rating    2/25/13   5     5     5     5     5   I have been both a camper and a councilor at Roaring Brook. I have found through my experiences here, that this program helps develope boys and prepares them for the real world. The skills that I learned at Roaring Brook have allowed me to become a successful business person in my career and has driven me to make many positive life choices. They build team work, confidence, healthy living skills and self reliance in a way that no other program can. The staff is very hard working and commited to the children at the camp. They try to help the children grow and develope in a positive way from the time they arrive at camp until they leave. In the four week and six week sessions the trips that the boys go on are once in a life time experiences that they will talk about with their friends for years to come. I still value and treasure every experince I had a camp both as a councilor and a camper. I highly recommend allowing your child to have these wonderful, life changing experiences. RID: 43807

2/24/13   5     5     5     5     4   I LOVE THIS CAMP. It pains me to see some people nock this camp since i have so many good memories there.I have to say this camp is a camp for those who want to learn and have fun, but some could say this is "serious fun." I have grown to love both of the directors of the camp and almost every councilor who I had the opportunity to meet. When I saw that someone said "However, the director is a rigid individual and my conversations with him left me wondering whether this man had much understanding of young boys at all!" i was shocked since i see the director of the ca,p as a role model and a person who I will always remember. I learned many things at this camp, from marksmanship to self reliance. The main ideas of the camp are "Lookout for the little guy, Commitment, Integrity, Knowing not to blame others, and give Kudos!" If your son does not socialize well in a tight nit community or does not have a previous experience at sleep away camp i would not recommend, but I LOVE THIS CAMP!!! RID: 43802

8/15/11   3     3     4     2     2   Buyer beware, read the small print in the contract you sign. If your child does not fit in with the narrow definition of expected behavior by the owners, you will get a call that you can come and collect your child. Your child will be booted out and you will not get a refund. Our son came home covered in mosquito bites, which makes you wonder if they teach the kids to change, coverup and use the sprays they are asked to bring. Kids are weighed and have to partake in fitness activities daily, no problem, but being told your obese does not sound like confidence building to me. If your kid is in anyway doubtfull think twice about sending him, they must obey orders perfectly to survive this camp, giving a new meaning to the survival camp motto, else you will get the cold message and you can pickup your child early and kiss your money goodbye. As for the councellors they are hired for the summer so you can be lucky or unlucky they are not previous campers so this can be a hit or a miss. RID: 36727

Click to report rating    1/4/09   5     5     5     5     5   I personally attended Roaring Brook every summer from 1989 through 1994 and it is one of the defining features of my adolesence. It was one of the most positive experiances of my life and had a profound impact in developing me into the man I am today. As a boy, I could have never foreseen how important the lessons I was learning about life would become later on. Lessons like Perseverance, Courage, Self Confidence, Leadership and Discipline are but a few I would credit this place with. When my parents first sent me when I was 11 years old the prospect of spending a month away from home, in the woods, with no electricity and none of the comforting faces I had come to rely on was terrifying. But I returned, year after year becuase I knew there was something good I was getting out of my time there. I would recommend Roaring Brook to any parent and cannot wait to send my boys some day. Click to report rating    11/17/08   3     3     5     3     3   I had great hopes for camp Roaring Brook when I left my child there but ultimately was disappointed. The concept of the camp is wonderful - what could be better than teaching young boys self reliance and survival skills in the wilderness? However, the director is a rigid individual and my conversations with him left me wondering whether this man had much understanding of young boys at all!. He found many faults with my son and shared them with me. While my son isn't perfect(who is) he is a normal 13 year old boy with a normal 13 year old's sense of humor. In spite of him, my son enjoyed himself and had good relationships with the counselors who told him to ignore the director but it still left a bad taste in his mouth and he does not want to go back. I also want to mention that there are no screens or nets on the lean-tos and my son was covered in mosquito bites - I mean hundreds, some of which got infected and took weeks to heal. Proceed with caution. RID: 27563

Click to report rating    8/12/08   5     5     5     5     5   I LOVE ROARING BROOK!!! I went for 5 years in a row (i couldn't go this year), and did the 6 week session twice. It is the most amazing experience ever, and you get to be at one with Nature. The councilors are highly experienced and are at best friend level with campers. Friendships made there last a lifetime, and the small group makes everybody so much closer. The Directors are the most amazing people you will ever meet, they are experienced in everything, and work side by side with the councilors. Roaring Brook is an experience (beyond summer camp) that every boy should experience in their lifetime. It is a life changing experience that teaches Self Reliance, Resourcefullness, the Will to acheive, and respect for the environment. I would not be the person i am now if it weren't for Roaring Brook. I wish each day i was back there in the woods with my fellow friends, councilors, and the directors, and the peace, solitude, and Zen of the wilderness RID: 25612

Click to report rating    4/15/08   5     5     5     5     5   This camp was the greatest camp I have ever experienced. Everyone had a great time, and all of the activities were open. The councellors all share personal relations with the kids, and make camp feel like a second home. Activities never get old, and the daily routine becomes more natural than that of urban living. Even now, a year later, I can still recognize by voice my entire session's worth of campers. I highly reccomend this camp for your son. RID: 22320

Click to report rating    9/5/07   5     5     3     5     4   My son loved this camp, but are disappointed some of teh main activities were not available (zipline, rope swing- not working) (metal shop, always full, never did orientiering, etc) the camp was only 1/2 full and it was the 1st session. Staff was fabulous and it is very organized and the idea behind it is amazing... very rustic. I would send my son back, and he wants to go back, however, I was disappointed he did not get to try some of the activities... RID: 14918
