7/23/13   5     5     5     5     5   I've gone to Sherman for 8 years as a camper, and I can honestly say its the best place on earth. When I was little I thought the staff were all superheroes, that's how caring and dedicated they all are. Its a beautiful place to be, there's cabins and an outdoor unit(Prim) two lakes, a pool, a huge dinning hall, a mini museum/nature center, clean bathrooms, an excellent health center, a garden, an archery range, multiple camp fire rings and the horse arena. As you may be able to tell from all the facilities, there's tons of things to do and the best part is on the first day the girls all plan what they want to do! I've always felt safe here, its a little different from most camps in that the girls sign up for a unit at home, and then they live with that unit(which has its own fabulous staff, cabins, shelter and a bathroom)They are never without a counselor and a buddy! The amount of personal attention is amazing, and it truly is a great camp! RID: 45321

2/21/09   5     5     5     5     5   I have been going to Camp Joe Scherman since 2001. This will be my 8th year. I have been 11 times, not including troop camps. Scherman has been and will be my home forever. I have medical problems that disable my abilities to do certain things. At Camp Scherman, I can do anything or be anything I want to be. The staff there are awesome, and understand my limits. I have run into a few bad counselors, but telling the AD Staff has helped a lot. I was a CIT 1 last year, and hope to be a CIT 2 this year. The food is AMAZING! I always end up comparing the food of Scherman to my other camp. Scherman always wins! The activities availible at Scherman are AMAZING!!! You can go up to North Cali and White Water Raft, or you can go outside of camp and go rock climbing. You can go outside of camp and go hiking. They offer a number of things to do. And i've done almost all of it. Scherman is one of the best camps out there. Everybody has there own opinion, but in mine. Camp Scherman is the best!! RID: 29079

Click to report rating    8/25/08   5     5     5     5     5   This is an AMAZING camp! It is definately a home away from home. All of the staff did everything possible to make sure all of us had an great time and were never bored! I was in Ado this year and the horse staff was absolutely amazing! I hope they all come back next year! It was such a great week that everyone of the girls in my unit were crying at last night campfire because we did not want to leave such an amazing camp and staff! I can't wait until I am old enough to be a WIT and eventually a Staff Member! I LOVE IT HERE! RID: 26060

Click to report rating    8/15/08   5     5     5     5     5   I've been going up to Camp Scherman since 2001 and have loved every minute of it. I have always dreamed of becoming a staff there, for the place is amazing- along with the people within the camp. Next year I will attend SIT (sailor-in-training), where you learn some of the basics of being waterfront staff. I cannot wait and will continue going up there for as long as I can. Scherman is my most favorite place in the world, and I doubt that will change. No matter what age, I have the time of my life up there. RID: 25701

Click to report rating    8/8/08   5     5     5     5     5   I have been going to Camp Scherman since 2001. I hate the fact that this last year as a CIT, it may have been my last until I am old enough to be staff. I have dreamed for many years of being a staff member, and, staying up there all summer long. Everything that is done is amazingly fun, and, all of the camp secrets make everything amazing. The last day is usually a day that may be sad for many, but, it is also a day to look forward to. Everyone gets their shirts, and they get bandanas signed, and, the most favorite thing happens...MICKEY MOUSE ROLL CALL! The Scherman Staff know what it takes to have fun, and how to make it a memorable week for campers of all ages, from Snoq to CIT and Apprenti. I would give it a 10 if that was possible! A 5 is not high enough for this place where the cactus meets the mountains and the mountains touch the sky! A part of me is forever there, singing all the amazing Scherman Songs!! RID: 25510

Click to report rating    7/1/08   5     5     5     5     5   I just got back from camp today and I had such a great time! The counselors I had were the best and so much fun! We had some problems in the unit with a few of the other girls and the counselors knew how to deal with the problem, solve it, and make everyone happy! Everyone in the unit can decide what kind of activities they want to do like hiking, swamping, archery, etc. and also how much they want to eat in the dining hall and cookout. There are a lot of units to choose from and I've made so many friends my last 8 years! I've been going since I was going into 2nd grade and I'm going into 9th! Why would someone come back to a camp for so many years if it wasn't great!?!? i definitely would recommend camp scherman to girls of all ages and for young women looking for a summer job- but expect to have a lot of walking and some bugs! Lots to do there. Sad that I didn't have any girls myself that could have expericened Camp Sherman. It IS truly where the Pine trees smell of Butterscotch... RID: 21265

Click to report rating    3/4/08   5     3     3     3     2   I went last year and It was the most miserable week of my life. We only ate in the mess hall twice or three times during the whole week. The counselors were nice but when some of my friends were just having fun laughing in their camp, they got yelled at for being "too loud". we hiked most of the time so we barely ever got to do anything or go to the bathroom. we voted on doing a lot of fun stuff but we only got to do one of the things, and with all the things that we actually did, we would have been able to do the things we wanted to do. We didn't have a great indoor meeting place, so we were freezing all the time and we never got to go some where warm except the mess hall and the bathrooms. We went swimming everyday which was a waste of time, and only took one shower the whole week! The positive side was the counselors, and my favorite was Stuff. They were nice and conforted you when you were sad. Other than that, my week was really very horrible. RID: 20936

Click to report rating    12/11/07   5     5     5     5     5   camp scherman is honestly one of the only places that i feel that i can be myself. its my only home. when you get up there and you can see the family that the staff bring. most of the staff coming back year after year trying to give the campers what they were given when they were campers many years ago. camp is huge, which leaves alot of trailblaizing, how often do you get to do that at home? pool is great, but the lakes are even better. 25 horses, and great horse staff. but the best part about camp i would say is that one special unit called prim. and the few special staff that run it. prim is the most beautiful part of camp, has the best cooking, and all around probably has the most fun of any of the units. the dining hall holds alot of fun and alot of history. and the museum. my word what a collection. great history on jim wellman and what camp was before us girlscouts got there. all around, better then lakota, wanacka, azaila trails, and whipspering oaks. fabulous property. skylar RID: 17905

In all three aspects it was a very positive experience for me and my girls. The grounds were well maintained, the food was great and we were never bored. We all went home with loads of stories, dirty clothes, and good clean memories that will last a life time. RID: 15165

Click to report rating    9/11/07   5     5     5     5     5   I've had a chance to experience camp as both a camper and staff, and I've really enjoyed both. Scherman is a fairly large camp, it's facilities are great, thanks in large part to the maintenance team. Scherman also has loads of activities, both in the summertime and year round. Some of the activities include swimming, horseback riding, rowing, sailing, canoeing, swamping, archery, and rock climbing. The camp staff are awesome. They're great with the girls and good role models. Also, Scherman is a Girl Scout camp, so safety is always a top priority. RID: 15159

Click to report rating    9/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   I have been staff at Scherman for 24 years and have loved every unit I have worked in. The staff are well trained and do a great job with the kids day in and day out. There is a variety of activities to participate in so there is something for everyone. Both of my daughters were long time campers at Scherman and also worked summers as staff ~ I can't wait until my granddaughter is old enough to be a camper at Scherman! RID: 15142

Click to report rating    9/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   I have been a staff member at several different camps, and found Scherman to have the most diverse camp experience. The facilities are large and well kept, and have activities suitable for every age group and specialized interest. I found that the staff genuinely cares for each camper and accepts all campers regardless of special needs or disabilities. I had a chance to talk to so many kids who have been going to Scherman for years, and plan to become staff. I wish I could say that of myself, but even coming only as staff, I feel I have become part of that unique camp 'family'. RID: 15131

Click to report rating    9/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   I'm an adult - I've been to Scherman with my troop, for training, mom-and-me camp, and 2 summer sessions as a counselor and it is my FAVORITE place in the world! The air is clear, you can see millions of stars, and there's a ton to do. Yes, there's a lot fo walking, it's hot in the summer, and the counselors are "mean" about making sure everyone drinks water, wears sunscreen and hats, and contributes to the camp society by doing kapers. I can honestly say I am a better person for having been a counselor and learned from the "younger" staff and the campers as well. I wish I had a camp like this to attend when I was a girl!! Click to report rating    9/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   I had been a camper for 11 years (ever since 2nd grade) I always loved it though I did get homesick sometimes but my counselors always made me feel better. (Yes some counselors do lose their tempers once in a short while but so do parents.) Camp has been a huge part of my life I have learned how to be independant and responsible.(yes you do have to clean a bathroom it isn't that bad) The grounds are breath taking and nice to walk around in (a two mile hike is not that terrible plus they take water breaks a lot along the way.) Plus the food is AMAZING! RID: 15127

Click to report rating    9/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Scherman is a great place to be! My girls enjoy it immensely and I enjoy my time there as well as a sessional! I wish I could contribute more time each summer, that is how much I like being on the mountain! The counselors are really knowledgeable and they make the camp experience fun and safe for the girls. My daughters especially like that they always have enough to eat, the night hikes and the new friends they make. Thank you everyone at Camp Scherman for all you do! RID: 15120

Click to report rating    9/10/07   4     5     5     4     5   This summer was my tenth at Scherman, the past 4 as staff. This is my favorite place on earth because of the staff, campers, and location. The activities are varied and well-run, and campers help select which activities they want to do. In some units where there are a larger number of girls only at camp for a few days, I will admit that personal attention is not as high, but it is difficult to learn 36 names and personalities in three days! Counselors do their best though! Food is amazing, whether in the dining hall or cooked out. Scherman has made me into the person I am today, both from times as a camper and times as staff. It has given me confidence and new skills, my best friends, knowledge of how to deal with all sorts of different people-adults and kids alike. Staff are trained thoroughly prior to the beginning of the summer, and continue to receive feedback and instruction throughout the summer. I would recommend Scherman to any girl looking for an amazing summer! RID: 15117

Click to report rating    9/10/07   4     5     5     4     5   A beautiful camp and wonderful facilities. The programs are great and there are a lot of fun traditions. I have sent my daughter on her own, I have taken my Girl Scout troop, we have gone for family camp, and I, have worked as a summer sessssional as well. The staff is by far mostly very good, upbeat, friendly, fun, caring and knowledgeable. There are a few exceptions as in any group of people, camp or not. From time to time everybody gets moody and tired no matter what kind of job you have, camp councilors are no exception. The biggest determining factor in your camper having a good time is her attitude going in. Most girls are excited to go and are expecting a great time and that's what they get. Some girls are anxious or feel forced to go and they will most likely have issues, but that would be true at any camp. Overall a great camp, I will send my daughter again. RID: 15116

Click to report rating    9/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   I have been going to Scherman for eight years and have been staff for three of them. I have been to other gs camps in the southern california area and this one, is by far, the best. The staff have always been friendly and helpful. I had decided after my first time there that I would be staff there someday. The few times that I did get sick there, they knew exactly what to do. The programs are amazing as well. They have everything form Arts and Crafts to Archery, horseback riding, and canoing. The staff are very well trained and work well together. They are truly there to help the girls. The girls have a great time and many come back year after year. It is a beautiful place in the out of doors that gives girls the opportunity to grow and be the best that they can be. RID: 15112

Click to report rating    8/31/07   5     5     5     5     5   I have been to camp scherman 6 times and by this time next year i'll have gone 8 times. it is my favorite place in the whole world more than anywhere else i've been except for when we went on a backpacking trip to cedar springs that was even more beautiful place than prim (which by the way is the most gorgous place in camp property) my favorite unit is into the woods because you cook all of your own food and you really only have to go to upper camp twice, on the first and last days. i can't wait to go back and see al of my favoite councilers. :) RID: 14770

Click to report rating    8/20/07   4     4     5     4     5   Camp Scherman was okay, and definitely one of the better Girl Scout camps I've been to. The activities were really fun and the Camper Sampler unit is a great introduction to sleepaway camp. The counselors were very nice and upbeat, and handled homesick and mean children well. There were some bad parts, though--the evil canoeing counselor, the fact that nobody knew what to do when I got a giant blister on my foot, the day they dumped way too much chlorine in the pool and we had to evacuate, the time when the fire alarm went off and wouldn't stop at 3:00 am, the rats that got in the tent... But overall you definitely get your money's worth--camp Scherman was a pretty good place. RID: 14269

3/26/07   1     4     2     1     5   i thought that camp scherman was horrible! i signed up for river rafting camp last year, and they took us to sacramento! i had no clue where i was going. when i took it up with the counselors, they didnt do much, and one tried to comfort me not because she felt bad, but because she had to. the counselors had very short tempers and were constantly b*tch*ng about going on their breaks. the river rafting was very fun (i recommend it out of all the other units) but when we were back at camp, it was extremely boring. there arent many activities at the camp, but it is a beautiful campground. we had to walk about 1-2 miles to get to the dining room-we were on the other side of the camp. the pool is pretty nice. once again, spectacular view! the camps pretty inexpensive, but i wouldnt recommend it. Click to report rating    2/22/07   5     5     5     5     5   I ADORE Camp Scherman!!! I'm was a CIT 1 last summer and I am definitely going back next summer. Looking back, my first camp experience wasn't that great, but that's because I was with some genuinly annoying campers who "fainted" and screamed every time they saw a bug until 1 in the morning--it was bad enough that the counselors made us clean the bathroom. On the plus side, I saw the most beautiful moon and stars that night. When I plucked up enough courage to give it another try the next summer, I have an amazing time horseback riding and I've gone back every summer that I had time. RID: 8008

Click to report rating    1/5/07   2     3     5     2     3   I went here when I was thirteen, and had a horrible week. Three of the four counselors mostly neglected the campers and had short tempers. They were also not attentive to camper health. The facilities are excellent, however, the camp is just too large. Walking anywhere takes a lot of time in the heat. This was a few years ago, but even as a counselor elsewhere last year, my campers told me it was the same. RID: 6510
