The camp is run like a small community and the campers do watch out for each other. The food was amazing, and my child is still talking about it. It gave her a greater sense of independence and the freedom of being outdoors and in a community. Highly recommended RID: 30581

Click to report rating    7/17/09   2     2     2     2     1   What can I say positive about this camp? The food was good thats about it. It was at least for the girls 'Lord of the Flies'. Campers were allowed to bully and be mean, counselors aren't much older or more mature than the campers themselves. Beware of 'Ron' and his psychobabble, he acts like he's everyone's friend but has his own psychological issues. The facilities - this is 2009 - not 1909. The bunks are deplorable and should be inspected by the health department. The pictures on the internet were absolutely beautiful but so deceptive. Don't risk your childs physical and emotional health by sending them here. Your money is best spent elsewhere. RID: 30444

Click to report rating    2/10/09   5     3     5     5     5   We love Camp Hawthorne. So much, in fact, that despite moving out to Washington State, my kids (currently 13 and 11) continue to attend Camp Hawthorne. I love the fact that it is small and family-run, and that the activities are very low-tech (probably "no-tech" would be the best description). The counselors have been uniformly nice, creative and just fun. My kids come home well-fed (the food is very good, apparently), grubby (in a good way), and full of great stories about all the fun they had. They talk about it all year long. And yes, the facilities can be rustic, but the kids totally love that. It's camp, after all! The lake and beach are beautiful, and the cabins are right along the beach. It's a beautiful woodsy property. I thoroughly recommend it. RID: 28929

Click to report rating    1/23/09   5     2     5     5     5   My daughter attended a camp in New York for three years before changing last year and going to Camp Hawthorne. She's been home for five months and is still raving about camp this and camp that. She loved the counselors and said the kids were laid back and genuinely friendly. My girl, who is picky about everything I cook for her, bragged endlessly about how the camp's chef made the best food she's ever had at camp. Her sole complaint was about the rustic condition of the bathrooms and showers. She came home smiling and I'm thrilled to see how much she's grown from the experience. She definitely more self confident and even seems more responsible about everything from her homework to picking up after herself. Happy parent here-- She'll be returning for summer 2009. RID: 28698
