2/3/14   5     5     5     5     5   As a former camper of Southwoods who attended for 4 summers, I can honestly say that this is the most amazing place to send your children for camp. If I could've went for more years, I would've. Scott and Andrea foster an amazing environment where campers disconnect from technology, stay active, and make memories with other campers that will last forever. Throughout my life, I've always looked back on Southwoods as one of the highest points in my life, where I felt comfortable, discovered myself, and really opened up to others. Attending Southwoods for the first year shortly after my parents divorce, I made friends who supported me and accepted me the second I arrived. To this day, Southwoods is still a home to me, and my camp friends and I are still so close. I hope to one day send me kids to Southwoods so they too can make amazing memories like I had the opportunity to do. I owe Scott and Andrea everything for my amazing summers at Southwoods. RID: 46692

1/30/14   5     5     5     5     5   After several years of attending this camp and a few years removed that have allowed me to properly reflect on my experience, I can honestly and proudly say that Southwoods is my home away from home. I still keep in touch with several of my camp friends and believe that those are some of my strongest relationships to this day, and the environment that Scott & Andrea create at camp allows this kind of bonding. From a young age, going to camp forced me entirely out of my comfort zone socially, allowed me to engage with nature beyond the boundaries of my suburban lifestyle, and introduced me to the importance of teamwork, respect and most of all--fun! Years from now, I will send my children to Southwoods, because not only will they be in the best of hands in terms of friends and staff, but also because I know firsthand how important the independence associated with sleep away camp can be to a child's personal growth.  1/18/14   1     3     3     1     1   I went here as a camper and looking back, I wish my parents had not spent the money on this place. It's very expensive and although, sure, I made friends, played some sports, and did some arts and crafts, I just don't think it's worth several thousands dollars. The facilities were all pretty nice, but it's a hike down and up from the lake. I'm surprised they're not more culturally/historically sensitive about tribal war - it's pretty offensive, actually. Because the camp is relatively new, I agree that there's no history/pride with campers. Also, I was just not a fan of Andrea and Scott. They came off as fake to us even when we were kids. I won't be sending my kids here in the future and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. RID: 46600

8/20/13   5     5     5     5     5   My son just got back from his very first camp experience and he seems to have had the time of his life. I was a bit apprehensive at first about him being away from home for so long but from the first day until the end, being able to browse the pictures and videos daily and see his smile from ear to ear really eased my worries. Scott and Andrea provided a gift to my son that he will remember for a lifetime. He was involved in so may activities daily and special events. I am amazed at how much the can fit into one day. He hasn't stopped talking about everything he did and learned and the friendships he made. Thank you so much Scott and Andrea!! RID: 45776

8/19/13   5     5     5     5     5   My daughters just returned from what they describe as the best 4 weeks of their lives. They loved all the activities, staff, even the food. I have listened to them rave about the amazing adventures they have been on and about all the things they have learned. I loved the fact that I knew they were well cared for and being able to view the vast amount of pictures posted everyday I was able to see all the things they were doing. Scott and Andrea have provided them with an memories and life lessons that they will never forget. RID: 45760

5/9/12   5     5     5     5     5   As the doctor at the camp, with two campers in the camp, I feel that I have the best perspective with which to rate Southwoods. First and foremost, as a parent, the thing we care most about, safety, is without a doubt, the number one priority at Southwoods. Every attention to detail surrounding safety is strictly adhered to by all Southwoods employees. The next most important aspect of our children's summer is fun. Andrea and Scott, and all the staff, by virtue of their meticulous attention to detail, ensure that every camper has a fun and positive experience. The forms that we all fill out about our children before the session, are studied by the counselors. Nothing is left to chance at Southwoods. Andrea and Scott hire and then train only the best counselors from around the world. These counselors, some specialists in various sports, and cultural endeavors, provide for a unique and growing experience for all of the campers. Southwoods, is without a doubt an amazing place.  3/28/12   5     4     5     5     4   The key to this camp is the director. He knows every camper and insists on respect between campers and the staff. Every day there are new expeeriences and so although the camp is only 4 weeks it contains all the activities that you would find in an 8 week camp. The location is beautiful and the lake allows for great water sking and sailing whereas at some other camps the kids need to go by bus to a different lake for these actiities. The kids get to experience adventures they could not get from home. My younger son counts the days until the next session because it is the highlight of his year to have fun 24/7.Initially concerned about the distance from NYC we realized we only go up once to pick them up and their initial trip is fiiled with talking and watching movies. Its location also allows for more beautiful landscape and actiivies. We have not regretted once having chosen this camp. RID: 40645

7/1/10   5     5     5     5     4   Extremely well run camp with such nice kids! The director is very selective about hiring staff and trains them well. Has very high expectations which makes for a great experience for the kids. No bad behavior allowed from campers or staff! Scott's interactions with the kids seems to be mostly high fives and rah rah let's have fun--no meaningful conversation with campers that I am aware of but the staff beneath him handles all of that so well. Love the camp's values--no hairdryers, makeup or bikinis for anyone including staff. Overall, an amazing experience but it is costly as all half session camps seem to be. RID: 33205

10/9/09   3     4     2     4     3   Southwoods, was a great experience this past summer. It was my first time away from home without any family or anyone i knew. I soon came to know almost every upper inter their was and they were very welcoming. But and I mean it Scott didn't even know my name!!! When he was giving a tour to some prospective victims, he came over to me and ruffledmy hair and was like "hey their matthew you having a good day" and not wanting to embaress him i went a long with it. Don't be fooled by them telling you that you get to choose your own activites. Because you don't. You get a few electives that are understaffed and poorly funded, meanwhile cabin activities have plenty of staff and resources and are taked much more seriously. If you aren't into rules then southwoods isn't for you, because almost every step you take it seems their is a rule. Not a bad summer camp just isn't for everybody.  4/12/09   5     5     5     5     4   Wonderful camp. My children were treated like they were the most important kids there - and all of the kids feel that way! Owners/directors Scott and Andrea know each of the children and really connect with all of them. Outstanding facilities, caring staff, exciting events and off-camp opportunities. Rated 4 for value since this is the most expensive camp I have come across. 3.5 week sessions only worked great for my family but they charge a premium for the single-session only option. Similar camps offering full 7wk sessions are not quite as expensive. If money is not an issue, I HIGHLY recommend this camp. Campers are not snooty or pretentious. My grounded kids from a modest home felt right at home. Kids were not "snotty or spoiled", per my 11-yr old. YEAH SOUTHWOODS! RID: 29484

Southwoods has nice counselors, great activites and the bunks are pretty nice. The kids are very nice also. I don't know why anyone wouldnd't love Southwoods. I can't wait to go back next year! Click to report rating    11/30/08   5     5     5     5     5   Southwoods is the best camp ever. I went to another camp 2 yrs ago and I was not made to feel very welcome. My mom talked me into going to SW this past summer and it was the most fun I have ever had. I have already come to NY to visit my bunk mates at the reunion. I got to see all my girls and visit NYC. I can not wait to go back this summer. RID: 27757

Click to report rating    10/15/08   5     5     5     5     5   I was the driver for the camp for 5 years so I was there before camp started and shortly there after so I really got a "behind the scenes" look at the place. Let me tell you if you are thinking about sending your child to Southwoods! DON'T HESITATE!! First of all Southwoods is VERY serious about safety. Another good aspect was the staff to camper ratio. The staff they hire are VERY carefully selected and trained as well. The location can't be beat and the food is awesome as well. Southwoods is a very fun place too! I worked there, and I had to remind myself I was at work! it was so fun!! Scott and Andrea are AWESOME! They are very loving and caring people. Another thing i found great about Southwoods is that Scott seems to re-invest heavily in the camp, every year, I came back, I was amazed in how much had improved since the last season. In closing I will say that I don't believe you can find a better camping experience. It is worth every penny RID: 27046

Click to report rating    10/12/08   5     5     5     5     5   We love Southwoods!!! Living in the West, we really wanted our children to get a great traditional East coast camp experience. What we did not want was that over the top, me always first, entitled attitude. As we reviewed camps and directors we started to feel that would not be possible. What a relief when we spoke with Southwoods. It took all of about 5 minutes on the phone with Scott to realize that Southwoods was what we had been looking for in a camp. The follow up from Adam was amazing and our childrens experience could not have been better. From start to finsish they run a safe, challenging and most of all, fun program. We know all three of our children, who are very different from each other, are safe and happy when they are at Southwoods. RID: 26977

Click to report rating    10/5/08   5     5     5     5     5   What an amazing place,Southwoods!!! So many wonderful things to share, from the activities to the staff. We feel so lucky to have found Scott, Andrea and the entire Southwoods team. It is October and our children have not stopped talking about all the things that they got to do. Our meals at home continue to be filled with the songs and chants from camp. My son was homesick the first week and the contact from Scott was great. He shared honest and complete information with us and helped us do the right things to support our sons growth. The outcome, my son can not wait to return. The other thing about Southwoods that is so amazing is it's location. We visited many places, and without a doubt, none had the vistas and lake that Southwoods has. Standing at the baseball field looking out over the Adirondack Mts and the lake was just breath taking. Again, we feel so lucky to have found Southwoods. It is more than just a camp. RID: 26894

Click to report rating    8/28/08   5     5     5     5     5   Southwoods is an environment in which everyone is valued. The staff are carefully selected and trained to be sensitive to each child's experience and given tools in order to maximize every camper's experience. The facilities are constantly being updated. The staff are always thinking of new and exciting ways to improve the programs and make them more valuable and worth while for all those at camp. Each person at Southwoods finds their nitch and feels a bond with others at camp creating life long memories. These experiences shape and change children's lives each summer. Children go home from Southwoods with life experiences they couldn't recieve anywhere else. RID: 26171

Click to report rating    8/26/08   4     5     4     5     4   Southwoods is a solid camp. It's has top notch facilities, fantastic staff, and the unique personal attention that makes it a great place for kids. From the perspective of the employee, it's a demanding place to work, but in the end full of many great memories and moments. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone, either kids or people thinking about working there. RID: 26103

8/25/08   5     5     5     5     5   As a first time camper/parent this year, we found the experience to be as great as it could be. And - we are returning next summer. Scott and Andrea are very positive and upbeat role models who are nurturing and still challenge the kids in all areas. They provide a safe camp environment for the kids and the campers which lets everyone just concentrate on having a great time. My daughter experienced a first few days of homesick adjustment and she credits her counselors and Andrea for coaching her through it. She thrived at this camp and was challenged in ways she didn't expect. There were no problems within the bunk and the girls were all considerate of each other. I only wish we had gone to Southwoods earlier! RID: 26047

Click to report rating    8/23/08   5     5     5     5     5   As a staff member I have actually quit my full time jobs every year to return to Southwoods. The experience and attention that every child receives at Southwoods is unmatched, and I find it a truly magical place that encourages the imaginations of each individual camper with the diverse summer activities that it provides. The full time staff that work for Southwoods year round are dedicated to the mission statement and are diligent about ensuring each camper's safety. The retention rate of staff is amazing and I return to camp every year to friendly faces. The true measure of the this camp can be found in the number of returning campers each year with smiles on their faces as they look forward to another summer with their friends and the new adventures that Southwoods provides for them. Click to report rating    8/22/08   5     5     5     5     5   I have spent many summers at Southwoods as a staff member, and it is like a second home to me. Working at Southwoods is both challenging and fun, and staff have the unique opportunity to really connect with their campers and their co-counselors. The camp setting is absolutely beautiful, and the facilities are well-kept. I like to tell people that working at camp is the most exhausting-- and rewarding-- job you can have. RID: 25968

Click to report rating    8/22/08   5     5     4     5     3   As a camper who returned to work at Southwoods I feel like I have a unique perspective on this camp. I absolutely loved it as a camper and found that regardless of its price, I made very close friends who were down to earth and whom I still visit six years after my last summer as a camper. As a staff member I have a behind the scenes view of how much is done to ensure that every single camper is having a good experience and what close attention is being paid to each camper. Some of the comments say that the staff is not treated well. I found that the head staff at Southwoods have no problem telling someone when they are not doing what they should be doing, and yes, this is done bluntly. However they also make an effort to praise those who are doing a good job. As with anything, there are imperfections, but the majority of the people I worked with this year told me they plan to return as staff again, so let that be your measure of how much fun they're having.      7/25/08   1     5     5     1     1   If you are a kid here then it is an excellent place to be, although you will not learn any values, just how to become more spoiled and lazy since the staff has to do everything for you, including folding your clothes, making your bed, cleaning up after you, etc... if you are a staff then it is pretty crappy. scott and andrea are arrogant and rude and do not value their staff at all. They will let children treat the staff however they want to ensure their return for the following years. As a former staff member, I saw many staff in tears over the treatment and so on. Horrible. Nights off were non- existent. Although staff really does come together since everyone is treated the same. You all pretty much form a team. Beautiful setting. Super Expensive, so I am not sure why staff isn't paid more. Its sad. Anyhow, it is what it is, and as long as Scott and Andrea run it, I am sure it will not change. RID: 25107

Click to report rating    6/9/08   5     5     5     5     5   As a returning camper who is now a staff memeber at Southwoods I find the last two comments very interesting. I am entering this rating from Southwoods. I agree, if you do something you have been asked not to do, Andrea and Scott will not allow you to stay. They tell us that from the very first day we are on property...I agree they take an entire week, really 10 days, to help us learn how to work with children so both camper and staff can have a successful experience. I agree that they require that any staff not on OD who leave for the evening, return and sign in at 12:30 infront of a head staff person. I agree, all of this is why Southwoods is a magical place for children. I am a returning staff member who was also a camper for 4 years...I hope they never change anything! It is not easy to work at Southwoods, they demand the best from all of us. RID: 23698

5/4/08   2     5     3     3     2   I went to Southwoods for 5 summers, and I thought I had found a solid camp.I could not have been more wrong.I could not return to Southwoods because there was no set program for people my age, which is fitting because i was treated like an infant during my time there. After switching to a new camp, I realized how much southwoods was lacking. The camp has no tradition or pride, and the campers do not return as counselors, and even the counselors who do work there rarely return after 1 summer. At my new camp, I felt more at home in a matter of minutes than I did for 5 summers at southwoods.I can see why the other people who rated southwoods would like it, but this is because they do not know what else is out there. The two main things that southwoods is lacking are senses of freedom and family, which should be most important when attending a camp.Yes, the camp is beautiful, but the people in it are not. Click to report rating    3/23/08   5     5     5     5     5   Southwoods has been a most amazing Camp for both of my children. They both have very different temperments, and the Camp was not only able to meet the needs of both children, but they absolutely loved the camp and will be returning this Summer. My son was so worried about his first Summer, they made him so comfortable that when he came home, he stated he was "CAMP SICK" and wanted stay for the whole Summer. Both of my children made life long friends, whom they keep in touch with through the Winter. RID: 21567

The sports are great and i had a wonderful time. All the staff are caring and fun loving and know how to treat kids. They make sure that we are safe at all times and are never unhappy. When you are down, They pick you up and keep a smile on your face. If you are looking for a camp that you child will charish for many years to come the South Woods is the place. Year after year there is trible wars and fun activites that only take place once but happen every year. and old campers will always help out the new ones. GO SOUTHWOODS!!! RID: 21122

Click to report rating    2/6/08   5     5     4     4     4   Southwoods is a safe and comfortable place for boys and girls. It offers both the arts and sports with more personal attention to either as the kids grow. There is a true family spirit and a genuine desire for the kids to keep in touch and return to their summer families each year. I believe it has been and will continue to be a wonderful memory for my daughter to talk about as she develops into an adult. She is already talking about sending her kids there! That;'s a long way off, but goes to show how much a part of her life she believes it is. Southwoods offers a fun, loving environment for kids to learn, grow and develop independently for the summer month they are there. The camp seems to understand the amount of freedom the kids should have as they grow and the staff has always been very connected to all the campers. RID: 19936

Click to report rating    1/27/08   5     5     5     5     5   I have sent two children to Southwoods and recommend it very highly. The four week experience is special because it allows the kids to bond with the same campers for the entire time and consists of an approach with a beginning, middle and end usually only found at eight week camps. The directors run a phenominal all around program with great facilities and out of camp trips while keeping the warm simplicity that exemplifies what I wanted in a children's summer camp They also have always hired the most caring and responsible staff, and get to know each of the children who attend. Most of all, my kids cannot wait to go back each year. RID: 19453

1/23/08   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter is going back to Southwoods for her 4th summer. I was hesitant at first to send her away to sleepaway but one meeting with Scott Ralls and I was confident that she would be in a safe, supportive environment. Scott and Andrea are totally dedicated and involved and seem to know everything that's going on with every child in that camp, every day.I don't know how they do it.Their vast experience and understanding of children enables them to handle every expected(and unexpected)situation with confidence and good judgement. The food is good, healthy and there's a big selection for picky eaters. My daughter loves the special events, including Tribal War and participating in the camp show. The waterfront activities are great and well supervised with expert swim/water sport counselors. Early Riser Club is a great option on those days when she does wakes early. I have been impressed with every interaction with the people at Southwoods and my daugther always has a great summer. RID: 19314

Click to report rating    1/17/08   5     5     5     5     5   Southwoods is a very special place. The facilities are outstanding. The owners and staff are fantastic. My children adore going back, year after year. They have formed life-long friendships. Scott and Andrea have perfected running a co-ed summer camp, both for the children and for their parents. It is a most imaginative program, providing structure when needed and appropriate, and spontaneous fun too. I would not hesitate to send a child of any age to Southwoods. Wish that I could go! Click to report rating    10/11/07   5     5     5     5     4   I had the absolute honour of being a counselor at Southwoods for 4 years. The staff that come to Southwoods are amazing people and I am still very good friends with many of them. The facility is wonderful and in the most beautiful setting. There is a huge variety of activities for the campers and the personal attention that all campers receive is incredible. The only complaint I have ever heard from campers is that the rules are to strict, but in the end it is what is best for the kids! Awesome camp! I have recruited many people to work at Southwoods so that they too can have one of the most amazing summers of their lives! Feel safe and very excited to send your children to Southwoods! they are in great hands! RID: 16115

Click to report rating    8/27/07   5     5     5     5     5   This was the first summer I sent my daughter (14) to Southwoods. I felt comfortable right away knowing she would be well taken care of in the hands of Scott & Andrea. The facilities are beautiful and well maintained. My daughter was a little hesitant not knowing any other campers at first but she was made to feel right at home and part of the group immediately. Her experience was one she will remember always and she has not stopped talking about it since she has been back. I would highly recommend Southwoods to everyone. Your children are sure to have a summer they will never forget!! RID: 14542

Click to report rating    8/26/07   5     5     5     5     5   My son loves Southwoods. After visting other 4 week camps, Southwoods was it! The staff and owners are always available. The camp is an extremely well runned camp. My son felt very safe there and made tons of new friends. Southwoods gets all the great things in that an 8 week camp offers like inter-camp games and color-war. We were thrilled with my sons experience! RID: 14525

6/19/07   5     5     5     5     5   Southwoods offers fantastic programs, with a positve approach. The environment is warm, and owners Andrea and Scott take a personal interest in each campers' experience. Training of the Southwoods' staff is top notch, and the whole camp is united in providing a fun and pro-camper experience. There is diversity in the programs offered. Campers enjoy familiar activities, and also try new things. I've seen it - Amazing things happen at Southwoods!!! RID: 12202

6/14/07   5     5     5     5     5   I spent 2 summers at Southwoods as a counselor and hope to return again in the future. As a middle school teacher, I have really developed my teaching skills at Southwoods thanks to Scott & Andrea. They have managed to create a 1st rate camp that is both fun and challenging for kids. To this day, I still hear from Scott & Andrea, many counselors I worked with (from all over the world), and even some former campers who keep me posted on their changing lives as they prepare to leave high school for college - very cool! Southwoods is one big family, and everyone really makes you feel safe and welcome. I can't wait to go back! RID: 12017

Click to report rating    6/8/07   5     5     5     5     5   I was a camper there from when they first started and now I am coming back as a counsleor along with several other ex-campers. This will be my family's 10th summer! This camp really made me who I am today and without them I would not have the independence, assertion,self-esteem, and advocacy I do now. Anyone who thinks this camp isn't good does not know what a great camp is. RID: 11692

Click to report rating    6/8/07   4     5     5     5     3   As a fomer staff who spent 4 years in a number of different positions with Southwoods. I can honestly say that I miss not being able to return. The life lessons that I gained from Scott, Andrea, the staff, and campers was something that has made me into the person I am today. I can't think of a better place to send kids to get the ultimate life experience! RID: 11681

6/4/07   1     1     1     1     1   If you would like your children to be watched like a two year old at an amusement park than I guess it's alright. The owners do not know how to run a camp and are arrogant. The camp has absolutely no tradition and there are no staff members that were once campers. The staff does not understand the meaning of camp. It is possibly one of the worst camps around. I went there and had an alright time. The following summer I switched camps and realized that I was missing out on what camp really was. Trust me and don't go to Southwoods. RID: 11504

Click to report rating    2/21/07   5     5     5     5     5   We have had two children spend a total of 12 summer experiences at Southwoods. Additionally, I have served a total of 7 summers for at least one week as camp doctor (on a strictly VOLUNTEER basis). As such, I am one of the rare adults who has an inside look at really happens at this camp. This is a fantastic place. My children, and the many others I saw, had a chance to grow and mature in a camp that provides a warm and nurturing atmosphere while promoting individual growth and responsibility. Scott and Andrea are the ideal camp directors and deliver on their promises. They keep a close eye on the campers while allowing freedom to try new experiences. The kids think they are camping, hiking, water-skiing and biking but what they are really doing is making lifelong friendships, maturing and learning responsibility and how to make wise choices. I can't say enough positive things about Southwoods! RID: 8001

2/2/07   5     5     5     5     5   I could not dream up a nicer camp than Southwoods. Their standards, morals, facilities, all go miles beyond your expectations. Scott and Andrea are simply incredible. Moreover, two of the only people I would trust my most prized possessions with! My kids came home with only one unfulfilled wish…The wish for an “Endless Summer”!. RID: 7447

Click to report rating    12/5/06   5     5     5     5     5   Southwoods has paid extraordinary attention to the facilities, and maximized the outdoor camp experience in the Northeast. However, that is not what truly distinguishes Southwoods. The directors are child-centered, and go beyond the norm to insure they recruit and maintain the best staff, and provide a safe environment in which your child will explore, grow and create memories. Next year will be our ninth year as Southwoods parents, and we return with complete confidence. RID: 5695
