7/1/19   1     3     3     1     2   Awful staff. Director this year is arrogant. Everyone left. Please get more male staff. Not ok to staff group of mostly boys with so many girls most of whom are unathletic and out of shape. Please change up the trips. Please offer discount and try to integrate the camp. Please contact parents to let them know how their kids are doing. Not worth money. Many kids are getting state funds. We don’t. It’s worth about $500/600 a week max. The extra staff isn’t worth it. You need highly social staff. On visitor day last year some activities were age appropriate some were babyish. Don’t patronize the kids!!! RID: 52708

Click to report rating    3/23/13   2     3     3     3     2   I went to this camp for 3 years it was OK some of the counselors are mean some are nice my first counselor was mean and she said she was sick and was admitted to the hospital but I think she lied and just quit my 2 other counselors were OK and the trips were OK the swimming section we went swimming in was small and even though there were 4 pools we only swam in one unless the pool that we swam in was closed. We swam in the pool with the sprinkler and music time was very good but we played kickball alot and when it was raining I got soaked from running from the bus to the shelter and the lunch is OK. Overall Camp Kehilla is an OK camp! RID: 44054
Click to report rating    7/23/10   5     1     5     5     5   This is one of the best camps I've went to. The counselors are nice, it is fun, but the kids curse A LOT, and it's not that clean. But overall it is a great camp with much to do. RID: 33437
Click to report rating    11/26/07   2     3     3     3     3   My child had a positive experience at Camp Kehilla in 2006, but less so in 2007. I got the feeling running the camp was beyond the experience of the very young camp director, but as I no longer see his name on the camp web site there may have been others who felt this way too. The male counselors of 2007 were inattentive, untrained and poor examples for the kids. (Much cursing, sexual talk, and on at least one occasion, use of racial epithets in front of the kids by the male counselors.) Communication with parents is consistently poor, and the parent visit day is always an unorganized mess. In 2007 the mix of high-functioning kids to low-functioning kids skewed toward the low end; as a result my HF kid brought home some bad habits. We are searching for new camp alternatives in 2008. Despite my reservations about the camp, my son WAS happy there and made several good friends. RID: 17444
Click to report rating    7/11/07   3     3     2     3     2   I almost can't comment because there is such a lack of communication between staff and parents (the reason for mostly 3's). Not a single note to let you know what they are doing at camp. My son was told by asst director that they would put on a play, and there has been not one drama session, only playground & art, a little kickball (only know this because of my son). Nvr rec'd any note from counselor (even introducing self) or any other staff member. Only knew about parents' visiting day because it is on the calendar, nvr rec'd notice that you have to take a shuttle bus to parents' day, but other parent I called rec'd 3 notices! I believe the camp was more organized in years prior. Maybe if enough calls are made, there will be a better communication system. RID: 12895
Click to report rating    12/10/06   3     1     2     4     2   I worked at this camp... Most of the day even though the counselors are supposed to plan activities we can't cause were waiting to go on a trip. Children in general could not stand to wait an hour. Most of the counselors are alright but they should all have backround with children with special needs. Also, the new head of the camp fails to look out for his staff and the camp. Art therapy is in need of improvement as is all the activities during the day. There is never an organized schedule which can be due to the horrible camp grounds. Anchor is a camp where they ensure safety and great activities that the children will like, kehilla instead is the camp where chidlren who some have violent backrounds are given many chances. Not only to mention again that some of the counselors really can not handle some kids and they are simple if you just have patience. RID: 5849

Click to report rating    3/28/06   4     2     3     4     2   This camp is on the grounds of the other Y-JCC camps. Most of the grounds are dirt or dried grass. My son was often bored with the level and organization of the activities. The staff also lacked patience for his toileting issues when they promised me full cooperation before I laid out the $4k plus for tuition. His summer was a nightmare and he ended up missing the last 3 weeks of camp. Unless they fix up the camp and come up with more ways to keep the kids engaged then I cannot see spending the high tuition. RID: 69
Click to report rating    3/22/06   3     4     3     2     2   I thought it was OK, though there wasn't that much to do.I didn't get that "comforting feeling." RID: 51
Click to report rating    3/12/06   5     2     2     5     3   Special needs camp run by the Sid Jacobson JCC of Roslyn, (but camp is located at Henry Kaufman Campgrounds in Dix Hills). Great staff, serves a need in community, but everything else is bare bones. RID: 9
