This camp should fire everyone and start over again. The kids working here seemed more interested in their own business than working with the campers. Little teen dramas among the staff - very hostile to each other, name-calling and discrimination, and the campers noticed. Not appropriate. They still use army-tent style canvas tents for some groups - the design of the tents over wooden platforms traps insects inside. Their "state of the art science facility" is a decade old, at least. The horses are unreliable and ill-tempered - no surprise given their treatment. Brownies have fun here but that's because they're easy to amuse: some crayons and rocks, and you're good. Don't bring older girls here. They'll only learn how to be cruel. They get enough of that at school. This is not an "empowering" camp - it's more the sit-down be-quiet and let us gossip about who's dating who and who might be pregnant camp. Nice role-models.

a lot of people here are giving horrible reviews about the troops that camped there. This camp is a residential summer camp and also hosts a camporee, in which troops can camp together. So if "some troop disses you", the camp is not bad, the people are. the facilities are modern; the star center is great; and remember people, its CAMP! not a five star hotel. you're lucky to get flushies. they have to be overprotective, because who wants to be the counselor telling a parent that a kid under their care is now in the hospital? i went to this camp in 4th and 5th grades, so i cant do anything about the older girls working, but i do remember that....i was somewhere in between the little kids and older girls, so it was good for me at the time. this camp was, at the least, better than sitting on my butt at home.

I recently went to this camp with 3 of my friends and i had a terrible time!!! The couselors were very rude the whole time! I went to a program called Makeovers and Marshmallows and we didnt do anything that had to do with makeover the whole week except do yoga and paint our nails! It sucked and the counselors acted like they didnt want to be there at all! The pool was the only thing there that was sort of fun. But the shower water was freezing cold the whole week and i dreaded taking a shower! All in all, i HATED it!!!!

This is not a GIRL SCOUT CAMP! No values from the girl scout promise used here. Terrible food, run by rude teenagers. Games that should not be played with the children. Trash falling out of the trash cans. There is a very unsafe slip and slide thing.I would not recommend taking your troop here. I just did and it was the worst experience for them. One nice thing the pool was nice.

I've been to 3 girl scout camps before and I think small valley was the best of those 3. For one thing small valley was the only camp with flushing toilets, and it also had the best pool (one camp didn't even have a pool, just a lake). Small Valley had a nice barn and the horses were as good as any can get at a girl scout camp.

The camp is cheap as far as camps go. Also, i've been going there for eight years and have worked there for three and it is consistenlty understaffed so the workers are sometimes working two postitions and hardly ever let the campers know. yes, the older girls are aked to do simple things like clean, but that's just helping out and is done at many different camps as well, sometimes to a hgiher degree. most of the campers return for another year. the horses are usually well behaved, but no one's perfect and that goes that same for the horses. the girls are assessed their first night on what they can handle in terms of riding abilities and if they try to "show oof" to the other girls about how well they can ride, then they will probably get assigned to a horse that is beyond their riding level. Thisis usually corrected however, but is a hassle. The poool is excellent and always clean and the food is camp food, but a higher class of camp food. After hiking and singing you'll be hungry.

I've been going to this camp for about five or six years now, and I'm not quite sure why. The director, Daisy, hates the older girls. The camp is fine for young children, but the older girls get treated like they work there. They are expected to help take care of the younger girls and get in trouble when they don't. They get treated very unfairly.

Speaking as a former staff member from this camp, I feel I should defend some of our policies. We would rather be overly cautious with the pool than have your child being injured. As for the horses "needing behavior checks," these horses are very well behaved and very tolerant of little girls who often don't know what they're doing. Yes, on hot days or days when the girls are being overly enthusiastic with the reins, they horses can and do bite. You would too if someone was yanking on your mouth. Sometimes, the horses are simply reacting to fear or insecurity coming from the child herself, and as she gains more self-confidence, the horse will "behave" better for her. If these horses were not suited to camp and children, they would be returned to the company we rent them from and replaced with another horse. I can personally attest to this having been done in the past.

The staff left something to be desired. Considering the ages of the girls attending the camp start at the Brownie GS level (6-8) the counselors were not helpful. Items were strewn all over the trailers used to haul suitcases and sleeping bags to the sleeping areas. More care could have been taken to assure the younger children were helped more in getting their belongings back. The dining was also something that was lacking particularily at breakfast. Poptarts and toast is not a nutritious breakfast given the cost of the camps. The horses and pool are the big attractions here but again, 1 touch of the side or bottom in the pool and your not going down the slide or in the deep end. The facilities are very nice and worth taking advantage of during the scouting year with the STAR center and unique cabins and tenting. Hopefully with the merger of the councils, this camp will find some better help and improve.

I wouldn't say that the councelors are mean, but they could be nicer. It seemed they were always busy. The pool is fun but they need to be more forgiving with swim tests. If you mess up a little bit like if your foot touches the bottom, your not allowed to go in the deeper parts. The horses are fun but a few of them could use some behavior checks. Overall, this camp is good.

I had so much fun! this was the first time I went to camp with out a friend, and I made friends right away! The counclers were really nice, too. There is so much to do! there is an in-ground pool, horse back riding, and much more! I think this is the best girl scout camp in the area!
