Classes are cathartic and we formed bonds with teachers who truly wanted you to achieve your best. If you are residential you form a family who accepts you compleately because we're all pretty crazy. You will always have someone to laugh and cry with, or to watch sherlock with. This is an amazing community and I hope that I can find something in the future that is as amazing as this. Most people who go once continue for as long as possible. councilors are funny, creative, and always there for you as an older sibling or friend if you need advice. You form a bond with everyone so quickly and I will never let that go. This camp has shaped my into the woman that i am today. RID: 42208
Click to report rating    6/25/12   5     5     5     5     5   DYWC was one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first sleep away camp, so I was naturally a bit nervous, but the counsellors were truly amazing (the kindness of the staff is one of this camp's biggest assets). They did their best to create a sense of family and break up harmful cliques. The classes were amazing; even the ones I didn't expect to enjoy were a blast. And maybe it was just my session, but the camp truly was a sort of crazy, VERY geeky family by the last night; it's fairly common to see kids spread out on the dorm floor playing cards, watching and analyzing Doctor Who, and most importantly, giving feedback on each other's work. The food wasn't exactly gourmet and the dorm FREEZING, but compared to my overall experience these seem like minor complaints. If you have a passion for writing, I highly recommend attending. You won't regret it. RID: 41430
Click to report rating    12/29/07   5     5     5     5     5   I love everything about DYWC. There's a sense of belonging that I've never experienced anywhere but DYWC. There are cliques (we're dealing with adolescents here, cliques are unavoidable) but it is impossible not to find a friend that you will keep in touch with for the rest of you life. Even if I didn't learn as much as I hoped I would in the classes, they were still good practice and lots of fun. Also, the afternoon activities are great (especially Drama with Will and Caitlin!). Sometimes, Reader's Forum gets a little boring, but it's still great to cheer for your friends when they go up to read =) Two of the best summers of my life were spent at Duke, and I intend to return until I'm too old to be a camper and then become a counselor. Click to report rating    12/23/07   5     5     5     4     3   I love DYWC. I met and learned from some amazing writers there. Most of the counselors are former campers, which definitely adds a sense of community; you feel like everyone who works or goes there loves it. RID: 18272
