My 10 year old went to this camp and had a very negative experience. The actual camp was generally fine in terms of accommodations and activities, but she had a serious bullying situation in her bunk that her young counselors just couldn't handle. Most of the kids going to camp here are extremely Jappy NJ/NY kids - really miserable kids who are just looking for their next target. My daughter was relentlessly bullied by 2 girls in her bunk and almost nothing was done about it. It seems like most of the kids here are miserable, poorly behaving kids who their parents can't wait to get rid of at ILC for the summer. My daughter had a great time at another camp the following summer, so I really think the problem here is just the kids and lack of supervision at this camp. Unless you are a super wealthy Jappy family from NJ/NY and your kids are mean, this won't be a good fit.

bottom line is this is not a good place to send your child at all. Its not the food, its not the bunks, its not the staff, its not all the fancy dancy "features" of the camp, ITS THE KIDS. I come from north carolina and 99 percent of the kids are NY and NJ kids. Most happen to be extremely rich but thats not it. They are insanely jappy, if you want your child to be surrounded by kids who brag about how much money they have and how expensive their clothes are or even worse whos family is richer, then this is the place for you. The kids are soooooo unbelievably rude, every day they are cursing out their bunkmates, making kids cry, picking on the poor kid, or yelling at consulers. I attended camp weequahic 2 years ago and it was a thousand times a better camp. I Will be going back next year for sure because the kids there are amazing. Both my sister and I are leaving Island Lake ashamed for ever coming. The kids who reviwed here are younger. if your child is over 10 years old, DONT SEND!!

This camp is amazing. The staff is extremely professional and mature and truly care about the children they serve. The camp is extremely safe and the activities are taught by well trained staff members. The group leaders are outstanding. Send your child to this camp if you are looking for him/her to make memories of a life time!

Our daughter is at this camp now. Wow what a place. Our daughter is very happy here is an understatement. We chose this place after alot of research . The main reason we chose this place was because of the kids ratings. This camp is expensive but wow what a place. The staff is great in my opinion. Our daughter brought her counsleors to meet us and we could tell she really liked them and enjoyed their company. The three counselors are in her bunk with the 12 girls. They have been there for 5-9 years . The activities are amazing, wish we the parents could go!! The facilties are just spectacular. This place was really clean. The mess hall was immaculate. The canteen was impressive with all the color war decorations. The kids all around us during the visiting days were begging their parents to let them stay another session. We were glad we were there for sessions 2 and 3. The staff is very responsive to parents, they got back to me within an hour for questions and we feel we chose the best.

This was my second summer at Island Lake. Last year I had a great time but this summer i could not get into all the activitioes that I wanted to. One of my counselors was kind of psycho too, but he was funny sometimes. The director hides in his office all day, and doesn't really talk to the kids.

My child has spent nine summers at this camp and refers to it as home. He has made friends that will last a lifetime. The counselors have been friendly and a positive influence in his life. He is still in contact with several that have impacted his life in positive ways. My child leads an athletic life when not at camp, this camp has given him the chance to make friends with kids with other interests and try other things in a nonthreatening enviornment. The world is filled with all kinds of people and this has allowed him to learn to deal with them. The counselors and the owners have always been involved and remain positive role models. The bunks can get messy but they are not dirty, the kids are hasppy here and I can never put a price on the experiences my child has had.

This is a great camp - kids can really do what they want within a structured environment, however, this quality and freedom does not come cheap. This is quite expensive.

Our son just got back, and we were horrified by the lack of supervision and total disorganization in the camp. My husband and I both went to camp as children and know what well run camps look like. This is NOT the place to send a young child. The staff quality is spotty as well. Our son ultimately had a good time, but we will not be sending him back next year. There are better choices out there. We made a big mistake in choosing island lake this summer.

My 13 year old son attended Island Lake this summer for the first time. He has only attended athletic camps previously. He is not terribly easy to please, likes athletics and is not an arts oriented person. Conclusion: he greatly enjoyed this camp. It has something for everyone. The campers are well managed and there is strong emphasis on getting along with others. The facilities are extensive and offer unusual activities. My son did not feel like an outsider even though many of the boys knew each other from prior summers. I can highly recommend this camp.

This is the best camp in the world! A TV show even came to film us because were the best camp in the world. This camp has so much more activities to offer than most camps. This is the only camp I know of that has a circus. Here you get to chose every activity that you do, and nobody makes fun of you for what you do. I went to another camp before I went here and I hated it. I really wish I just started off going here.

Speaking as camper then CIT (counselor in training) here for 9 years. I have made some of the best friends of my life here. I went to other camps where the kids were extremly spoiled and snotty. This camp discourages that behavior (although many of the campers are very well off) The entire concept of this camp is individualized programming so each child chooses their own activities-- which creates not only independence but a great sense of "owning" your camp expierence.I learned to water ski, sail and perfect my softball pitch at camp. I can not wait till I have children of my own to send to ISLAND LAKE!!!

I loved this camp and all of you people who hated this camp well never go back because you'll just ruin the fun time that we're having with your negativity. The staff and campers were amazing and so friendly. And btw it was my first year and i'm in middle school so you dont have to start off early to meet friends! And stop saying things that arent even true. I love the food and the activities are so much fun!

My son has gone here for 8 summers and I have been impressed with the staff each and every year. You'll see that most of the kids who comment here love it-- my child does too. While it is possible that those who whine here may have come across the odd "bad" staff member, I find myself wondering if this was the right camp for them in the first place. The camp works best for kids that are passionate about something--and there are many things to chose from.. but if your child is going to need to be coaxed to participate in any activity at all and would rather play video games in your basement at home, my guess is that he or she will not like this camp or any other.

All of you better stop the bullsh*t about the owners. They are very nice people. They do not CARE about money, and do not play favorites. The camp has nothing bad to say. The girls, especially the older ones, can be a little jappy at times, but would never hurt a fly. The counselors, for the most part, are excellent, and you won't find a better camp. You can get 8 weeks here for the same price of 4 wks at Laurel South, which is a super jappy place where all of the rich b***hes go.

Islandlake is more than a camp to me, it is a way of life.A day doesn't go by where I don't think about the 6 incredible summers I spent at Island Lake.It breaks my heart reading comments where campers had a bad experience because to me, it was nothing less than perfect.I started in bunk 1 where I met the most amazing group of girls who still, after almost 8 years are my best friends. The staff is your family and with them I always felt safe and loved. The relationships I made with the counselors was such a unique bond, and despite the age difference,I still keep in touch with them and will for the rest of my life.Regarding the food-there is always something for everyone. The intense circus program, art, rock shop, video, sports, theatre, horseback, magic, waterfront, etc are just a few of ILC's unique activities that other camps can not compare to. I HIGHLY recommend sending your children here and if they go in with a positive attitude then ILC will change their lives like it changed mine.

hey Island Lakers! The first time I went here it was like a dream come true. My mom had said to me that I should go for 2nd and 3rd session, but I kept telling her no since I thought that I would be too homesick...but oh boy did that change on the bus ride there! I didn't know anyone that was there besides my 16 year old sister that had come 1st session and was staying the whole summer. But my mom called and asked if there was anyone who would possibly be in my bunk that I could sit next to on the bus.she finally found a girl my age and we talked almost the whoel bus ride and became really good friends! Excactly when I got off of that bus and smelt the fresh air,saw the pool, the girls campus, the tennis court,I knew that I would have the time of my life.and I did. I made tons of new friends...even ones that were older and younger than me! There are so many things to do there that I enjoy and I'm so happy that I'm going to Island Lake again. I LOVE ISLAND LAKE! ILC U THERE 2008!!!

The counselors are so nice and it's amazing cuz u get to pick everything u want to do and not have to do any activities u don't want to do!! Quite honestly, this camp is great. Obviously in a program that allows your child to pick his/her own activities there will be some kids that will sit around all day. This seems to be a common complaint on this website. However, I know for a fact that if you want your child to do certain activites, the parent can specify this. As a camper going back for my eighth year I can honestly say that the camp is incredible. Obviously the owners care about the parents, campers, staff, and facility because if they didn't, they wouldn't be running a camp in the first place. There are plenty of other ways to make money. In addition, Dave Landers has improved the food tremendously and it is a lot better then other camps. These bad reviews give an inaccurate impression of Island Lake. If the camp was so bad then why do so many kids return each year?

I only went for one summer, years ago, and never went back. The facilities are absolutely terrible, the staff looked forward to leaving more than the campers did, the food was AWFUL, and all the kids were just mean. I never went to another summer camp after this because this place so completely ruined my experience. Now I'm about to go to college and never got to enjoy summer camp like all my friends seem to.

I have two children at this wonderfull camp. My 10 year daughter is having the time of her life. Her only complaint I need to send her another camera because she ran out of film for her disposable camera. My 8 year old is equally as thrilled. He loves the pioneering and even learned how to start a camp fire with a magnifying glass.I was worried for my daughter because girls can be so mean and my daughter is very sensitive. She is not having one problem. And her best friend is from Rome,Italy. My son's friend for England.I am absolutely thrilled.Island Lake camp has exceded our family's expectations.WOW!

After attending other camps, my children have been at Island Lake for four very happy years. The counselors are almost all American, which I like because they do not raise their children in other countries like we do. They also are well-trained and supervise the kids completely. There is probably no camp in America with the wonderful facilities that this camp has. The landscaping makes this the lovliest camp I have seen. There is so much offered to the children that they cannot possibly do everything. I cannot imagine a child not finding activities that interest them. The directors are well-liked and are out there with the children. It seems to me that the few negative comments here are from children who would not be happy at any camp. My kids live for the summer every year, and I do too, as I am thrilled to see them so happy. The camp fills early and people who procrastinate do not get their kids in. I can think of nothing negative about Island Lake.

This is my favorite place in the world. This summer will be my ninth. I'm going back as a 2nd year CIT. Island Lake has the facilities to make you feel as if you are attening a camp that specializes in your interests, but you get the benefit of becoming friends with kids who are into different things than you. So much can be said about the amazing people at camp. I am still close with the girls I met on my first day of camp in 1999. The counselors are so much fun, but they are also extrememely well trained. They know how to tactfully deal with any situation that may arise. The variety of activites prevents monotany and allows campers to pursue interests like circus that are unavailable almost anywhere else. This place is incredible. It really means a lot to all of the campers who go there.

I absolutely love this camp. It is my second home. This coming summer will be my 9th summer and I'll be a CIT. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. In response to other comments, the bunks are only filty if your kids don't clean like they are supposed to. Supervision is absolutely not a problem, especially for the younger kids. For those children there are 3 counselors a bunk plus maybe a CIT, they have a curfew early enough, and they have counselors at activities that watch them. Granted they aren't watched every time they move, but if you wanted that then why consider sleepaway in the first place? Watch them yourself. Counselors care if you go to activites or not, the kids are called over the loudspeaker and looked for. Craig won't have a problem with you signing up for the same thing every day, unless you say that you don't want your child doing that. Don't diss this camp. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Island Lake, I love you! RIP: Poppy, Dwight, and D. <3

Seriously, i've been going here for 4 summers and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. For all of you that say the bunks are gross: please go look at other camps because after looking at several we are lucky. Plus, camp is not about luxuries. People don't go there to live in perfectly clean bunks and have air conditioning etc. The camp is very well run, the campers are the best, and there is something to do for everyone. For those who say there is little supervision, you are wrong. Every summer tons of kids get caught for sneaking out, and yes...the staff does care about our well-being and supervision. The facilities are absolutely amazing. Most camps don't have half the thing ILC offers. How about a circus, huge skatepark, and state of the art gym? This is a great camp. I have so many great friends and have had some amazing experiences because of this place. Stop dissing ILC!

THIS IS THE BEST CAMP EVER I Think that the parents or kids that say that the kids are rude and obnoxious are very mean and hurt my feelings keep your opinions about the campers to yourselves because I am a camper of this camp and it was very insulting to me and probably the rest of the campers who go to this camp. This camp was the greatest thing that ever happened to me I finally made friends I have never done that before so before you go writing something bad about this camp keep it about the camp and not the campers thank you.

as someone who went here for 3 summers, i did not like this camp, there was scarcely any supervision, and also the camp is very cliquey. If you haven't gone there since you were like eight or nine, then chances are you will have a hard time making friends because the campers tend to be very jappy and snobby. Also the bunks are gross, and the owners play favorites, and their favorites get preferential treatment.

I love this camp!!! I have made friends with different groups of people, and many friendships that i know will last forever! It's cool because i made friends from all different states and countries. They have weekly meetings to make sure that the camp keeps up its good reputation, and to make sure the counselors are always looking out for the campers. For the people who said that there is no supervision and you could just leave camp, you are completely wrong. If anything, they are over protective and worried. I know someone who left camp and they got kicked out. If anything that punishment was too harsh, but they clearly care. On the last night of the sessions they pay counselors extra to make sure campers aren't sneaking out of their bunks and swimming in the lake, etc. There are different groups of people, so it's easy for anyone to make friends. The only downside is that there are sessions. There is also a newly added trip third session that was great I LOVE ISLAND LAKE!!

Ew, I hated this camp. Who let's camper's go everywhere alone if I wanted to go in the lake at 3 in the morning it would be great as long as i payed them. They don't even care if you go to activities I could sleep in my bunk all day.. I am a gymnast and my parents wanted me to go a camp where every activity was gymnastics to inhance my chances of a career in gym. Well, i went to gymnastics whenever i wanted to and came home a half level worse, i had come to lake bryn mawr camp for 2 summers previously and i dont know why i ever left.. I went back to bryn mawr after and it now my 5th summer (i started young) i cant wait to get my angel and i love it so much.. The gymnastics is amazing and the gymnasium is olympic quality

WOW! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CAMP. THIS COMING SUMMER WILL BE MY 6TH, AND IT IS SO AMAZING. the kids, owners, counselors, and activities are amazing. the only thing thats not wonderful is the bunks, but its all part of the camp experience. It really does not make a difference to me, and im a neat, and picky person. i recommend this camp to absolutely everyone and its amazing. the friends ive made here are my sisters now, and they will be forever.

After 7 summers there, I made amazing friends I would do anything for. However, most of the kids there are extremely spoiled and obnoxious, and how you're treated is ALWAYS based on how many people know you.

oh my godd. most of you are f*ck*ng crazzyyy, this camp is AMAZING. i have been going for 5 years and i wouldnt switch camps for the world. the activities are amazingg and if you want you can just skip your minors or majors. the staff is almost always PERECT and the bunks arent that bad. the only thing i can think of is that its cold in the mornings. but thats it. and the person who said that they dont check to see if you brushed your teath : umm if you have common sense then OBVIOULSY u brush your teeth anyway. wowwwww. visit the island lake website and you will see how many people LOVE THIS CAMP. so like if you dont like it dont hate. your probably such a loser anyway. and also, who cares that its expensive or jappy? umm if its expensive obviously there are some japs. but usualy the people who dont like this camp are just SOOO spoiled that they dont enjoy it. but i see so many people come back from previous summers, so dont say you cudnt make friends cuz people were always leaving.<3

3 summers forced to come here. worst camp ever. the owners are genuinelly cruel selfish people that care more about their money then their campers and staff. obnoxious people. the staff is usually great but the owners are really just miserable people.

It was an okay camp, what made it fun were the campers. If you plan on going here you should start at a young age because mostly everyone makes their friends when they are younger. There were three counslers to a bunk, and sometimes two of them would go out and not come back until the early morning on their nights off. They also allowed cursing in the cabins and even thought there is a "chore wheel" the cabins seem to get very very dirty. This is not the camp for everyone.

i have been goign to island lake since i was 9 years old and i find it amazing. i love it so much and would never even think of going to anyother camp. everybody who said it was a horrible camp probably didn't give it a chance. I have always had amazing couselors an amazing toleran t and non cliquey bunk and it is a camp that does not put up with intolerance and bullying . the prigram is extremly organized and everybody knows what they are doing. For example almost all of the theater staff majors in something to do with theater in college also the theater director has been there for 15 years and one of my conselors has been at island lkae for 9 years. I recomend this camp to anybody who wants an indvidualized program that lets you do what you want to do. Actually i would reccomend camp island lake for anybody who would want to go to camp

My family and I took a tour of the camp and loved everything about it. It is a camp that is "structured" to your child's interests because your child creates his/her own schedule daily. It is in that sense, that one may describe it as being "unorganized". If you want the traditional structured atmosphere, this camp is not for you. I found the grounds to be very appealing as well as the newest additions of a covered Skate Park and air conditioned dining room. The bunks were well kept, but rustic. If you keep that in mind, the bunks are fine. The staff were friendly and the children were very happy and came up to us on our tour telling us how much they love this camp. For those of you reading the ratings of this camp that were negative. I think that if you want your child to be able to pick his/her own schedule and if want a real "camp" feel, this is definitely a camp to look at.

i went to this camp for four years and its amazing. it's very expensive, but it's well worth it. the staff is incredible. it's a very large camp, with ovre 1000 campers throughout the entire summer. each session averages about 600 campers. AMAZING CAMP!
