I started going to Camp Strawderman when I was 9 years old and kept coming back every year for 9 years. I've been a counselor and lifeguard here for the past 2 summers and am going back for summer 2017 because I love it so much. This camp fosters friendship and a love for the outdoors with complete isolation from cell phones and the internet. It's a gorgeous place I get to call home for 2 months each year. As a camper and counselor I would highly recommend this camp to all prospective girls.

I started in 1939 when the camp was very rustic. One task for each cabin was to bring back kerosene for the lamp (no electricity in cabins) I loved the outdoors and discovered horses. I returned for 13 years and ended up as a counselor and riding instructor. The experience was very important in shaping my life in a positive way. I have some wonderful memories and even some 16mm movies now on a cd: water pageants, horse show, and me on a horse, naturally. I commend Margie for keeping this going to provide unforgettable experiences for young girls. At my age (84) I still see Strawderman in my dreams.

I attended Strawderman for 13 years from 1939 through 1955 when it was very rustic. I loved the place, the people, and especially horses, was teaching riding during the final 2 years. It was a very big part of my life and a positive experience giving me a lifelong love of the outdoors. So glad it is still offered to girls today.

My mother was a counselor here in the 1930's when she was a college student at now)JMU. I was unable to go, but my daughter did in the 1980's,and now my granddaughter attends. I have three photos of them all on a (different!)horse at Camp Strawderman with the same mountain range in the distance...Priceless!

A tremendous experience for me in the 80s and for my daughter for the last 4 years. Not a new fancy camp showcasing trendy sports, it is a classic camp with a strong connection to the spectacular place where it lies, nestled in the mountains. Powerful, confidence-building experience. Spectacular in its simplicity.

I went to camp 57 years ago.. and still love my memories of Camp Strawderman!!I can still smell the fresh air in the mountains, taste the cold natural spring water and remember all the wonderful people I met while at my 'summer home'. We used to have a song about Barka .. !! Priceless ..!! So glad my parents gave me the opportunity to experience this life changing camp.

I was a camper at Strawderman for 8 years in the 70's. Now my daughter is in her 4th summer. It is so much more than it's idyllic setting tucked away in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. It's the ideals that are taught that last a lifetime and help to build strong character. It's like no other place in the world.

There are not enough words to show the values and life lessons I learned at Strawderman. I am a Strawderman Girl for life, it has influenced every aspect of who I am, and tought me to be confident in who I am, the decisions I make, and where I fit in this world. I went to Strawderman as a camper for 8 years and was a counselor for 4 years. If I could continue I would go back every summer. A great place to send your girls if you want them to develope in a place that is safe from judgement and to make true friendships she can count on for life.

THIS CAMP IS AWSOME!! I've gone for two years now and I LOVE it! I met three of my closest friends there. The activities are great, you can choose the ones that you think you will like best. The horseback riding instruction is great, especially for beginners, but riding is optional. My best friend and I have allergies and they will decide to switch the entire menu for your table just so you are okay. The day ends with a fire-less campfire where you sing. The cabins are just cabins, nothing fancy, but yes, real buildings. The property is beautiful, in the heart of the Shannondoah Valley. Bottom line: YOU WILL MEET THE BEST FRIENDS YOU WILL EVER HAVE AND HAVE A UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE!

I recently completed my first summer at Camp Strawderman, it was better that I could have possibly imagined. Most of the counselors and other staff are former campers, they are caring, understanding, and fun people. Being that I have food allergies, I was especially happy to find that the cook herself personally inspected food labels to make sure I could eat whatever was being served, and when they were not, she found something else for me to eat. The campers are all friendly and welcoming! The activities are well instructed, fun, and cater to many different ability levels and age groups. At Camp Strawderman you have a lot of choice in the activities in which you participate, yet the camp is well-structured and for activities class sizes are small insuring personal attention from the instructors. The camp is just one big family where even a new camper can feel at home.

I love this cam SO much. You can go for either 2, 4,6,or 8 weeks. I have been going for 6 weeks. I wish i could go there all year long. There are so many activities you can do and it is so fun. I love all of the cabins and the meals too. It is an all girls camp so you don't have romantic pressure. It is the best camp in the world. It is not well known but can always use more people! About 100 girls go each session. It has a very homey feeling. I just love it and you will too! It is the best camp in the WORLD!

I went to Camp Strawderman for 11 years, and it was one of the defining experiences of my life. A girl learns so much more than how to ride, or swim, or shoot archery. At Strawderman, girls learn how to live, to cherish the earth and to care about each other. The activities are well-taught, the setting is beautiful, but the most important thing a girl takes from Strawderman is a real knowledge who she is and what her place is in the world: a competent, caring leader. Strawderman has given three generations of girls memories and friendships that last a lifetime, as well as a confidence that they have a place in the world that only they can fill. There is no better place on earth for a girl than Strawderman - and I say that, looking back, after over 30 years away. Strawderman made me who I am.

I highly recommend Camp Strawderman. I went there for 11 years, and I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. It taught me so many valuable lessons and skills that I carried with me through high school and college. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from me!
