Click to report rating    2/27/25   4     4     4     2     5   so my personal experience was amazing. i met many friends and i was very close with the directors. the thing is my best friend at camp was kicked out for having allergic reactions "and being a danger to herself" we all thought this was absurd because we all knew her very well and knew that she was completely safe. this experience left our entire bunk sobbing for days after and tainting our experience. she told me when i got home that they had asked her not to go back. this camp has the wrong way of "helping" children who they think need help. the experience is great if you don't have any problems and arent injury prone. i have loved every second of camp but they way they handled many situations (not only the one i spoke of) left many of my peers and friends shaken up and emotionally hurt. i hope that they learn from their mistakes this past year and understand how scarring it was. Click to report rating    9/30/24   1     2     3     1     1   Long Lake review Five and a half weeks into my daughter’s third summer here, she was sent home for her “safety” and the “safety” of others. My daughter has never been in trouble a day in her life. In the weeks leading up to her being sent home, she had a severe allergic reaction to a bee sting for the first time in her life. She received appropriate treatment, was evaluated at the hospital and returned to camp. A couple of weeks later, she had what was assessed as an allergic reaction to some candy she had eaten from the canteen and again was treated at the hospital. She had no known food allergies prior to this and was told at the hospital that they were not sure what caused the reaction. In the days/hours leading to her dismissal, she had gone to the nurse to get a band-aid after scratching herself on the metal bed frame in the bunk. The nurse asked her about cutting which my daughter denied. In her words, “why would I go to the nurse if I was doing that?”. While wai RID: 54109

5/4/20   3     3     4     4     2   The best thing about the camp is the number of activities offered. The worst is the theatre department. The musicals are all staged around boys, though the makeup of the camp is mostly girls. As if girls don't get enough of that all school year. The past two years, the main shows have been Tommy and Hair -- psychadelic rock musicals that the director loves but the kids/parents have little interest in. Hair was chopped into an indecipherable story line, no one came to the show, songs were cut miserably or left out all together, kids didn't know what they were singing about, and it was too mature for 16 year olds. If you have an older girl camper, she will get swept into ensemble for a "mature" musical with major boy parts. The director totally lacks awareness and the staff won't answer your emails. The rest of the camp is great, but if you're going just for theatre and you have a girl, spend your MAJOR $$$ elsewhere. Or go to Stage Door. Oh, and there's hardly a vegetable to be found. Click to report rating    7/8/19   4     5     4     3     3   Beautiful location, lovely Adirondack mountain setting on the lake. Great camp for artistic or musical campers who are driven and know exactly what they want to get out of their time. However the lack of diversity is staggering (my camper was 1 of only 5 or 6 black youths), and individual attention is lacking for students who want to try various activities but aren't sure what their passion is yet. My camper wound up bored and isolated as a result, and our requests for him to do try various activities were not enforced by the staff. Overall a disappointing experience for the high cost of the camp. RID: 52716

11/3/17   5     5     5     5     5   Unbelievably amazing! She had such an incredible time and I cannot believe she felt comfortable enough to get up on stage! She's always been a fine arts girl, so I was astonished to see her up there in a show! The fact that she felt comfortable enough to get out of her comfort zone speaks volumes about the staff. She's still so proud she did it! We're still enjoying all the ceramics and paintings she made. We LOVE Long Lake and will forever keep you in our hearts. I am so glad I chose this camp - I had a feeling it would be perfect for her and it was! And I had so much fun during the final weekend meeting all the parents of her friends. She still keeps in touch with her camp friends and that makes me feel so good. I gave every category a 5 because: staff was supportive and encouraging, facilities were clean and up-to-date, activities were outstanding and flexible, Personal attention was outstanding (her unit leader really understood her), monetary value was priceless. Worth it! RID: 51458
Click to report rating    8/6/17   1     5     3     1     1   ????? in the last week The director of the camp called my boy a girl because he was being bullied and expressing his frustration. That was just one of the phone calls I got from my very unhappy camper. The camp counselors participate in the social bullying My son said he felt he could not say, do, anything in his bunk without the counselor shutting him down in very negative manner. In his words " Mom I can not open my mouth, I can't ask for anything, I can not say a thing, I can not be myself" I would define his experience as a reaction to being emotionally abused. They have little or no understanding of what bullying is and how it functions. From the description, I got from both boys some were just sadistic. This is a top down problem. No use in making phone calls. My son endured verbal, emotional, abuse at the hands of untrained developmental unaware adults. He did make it through with friends. His dorm was hell for him. Click to report rating    5/2/17   5     5     5     5     5   Our daughter learned about Long Lake Camp from friends who had had great experiences here and was excited to attend. She was a bit nervous about auditioning, thinking that everyone else would be further along in their performance development. What she quickly learned was there were a variety of kids from all sorts of backgrounds with a wide range of talents. They were all encouraged to try, learn and explore. She ended up directing a play, doing a dance performance and being part of an ensemble in another play. She was eager to show us all of the the projects she was involved in and to introduce us to all of her new friends. Our younger son was so inspired by the performances that he saw, as well as the sense of support and camaraderie, that he hasked to go to Long Lake Camp as well. We look forward to hearing about all of his adventures this summer! RID: 50677
Click to report rating    9/15/16   1     3     3     2     2   I have fond memories of the friends I met and certain other aspects of the two summers I spent at LLC, but ultimately the experience turned incredibly sour. Considering the kind of camp this is, the owners seem to have a real issue with gay kids. There were some problems during my time there which I had nothing to do with, yet somehow they were eventually blamed on me. I still don't fully understand what happened or why my name was smeared, but I was essentially asked not to come back. I wasn't planning on it regardless, seeing as the staff played favorites and often all-but ignored the campers who weren't looking to become Broadway stars, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have a feeling the owners wanted to protected their "stars." My friends were great, and some of the facilities and programs were good. The administration and overall running of the camp was absolutely awful. This happened about a decade ago, but a LOT would have had to change to fix those problems. RID: 50112

10/1/15   5     5     5     5     5   THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!! The Staff is incredible, they pay attention to every need the camper has. The facilities are stunning -- the lake view is gorgeous and from the numerous theaters and cabins and horse back riding and cafeteria to the landscape, it was spectacular. The activities can't be beat. If at any time a camper or a parent needs something, the counselors and staff were totally attentive and took care of things right away. The price was well worth it. Our son is returning next year and he can't wait for it. The productions were out of this world!!! RID: 49208

5/18/13   5     5     5     5     5   Long Lake is the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me! I went to the camp summer 2012, 3rd session, and it was the best experience of my entire life! I did everything (and more) then I saw on the DVD they sent! I got to do fine arts, music, dance, theater, waterfront, sports, and I made more friends in 3 weeks at Long Lake, then I've ever made here in my hometown! Plus: They have fantastic food, great rooms, and an absoululy goregous camp! The lake is so breathtaking, and the mountains are spectacular! If you're looking into an arts camp to go to, GO TO LONG LAKE CAMP FOR THE ARTS! You won't regret it, I PROMISE! RID: 44512

Click to report rating    10/22/12   5     5     5     5     5   Our 14 y/o son attended this camp for the first time this summer . He had an absolutely positive experience. He is already speaking about his desire to return to Long Lake next year. We were also impressed when we attended the last weekend, "parent's weekend." Besides the beautiful location, the facilities (for the performing and fine arts) were impressive. It was amazing that in 3 weeks time the instructors could get these kids to perform in some top notch productions. What we liked is that although there were some very talented kids, some had little or no no experience at all, but could still participate at any level. They encourage the kids to try new things in a very non-intimidating inclusive environment. The counselors, instructors and owners/managers are terrific and very approachable. RID: 42917
Click to report rating    10/11/12   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter had a tremendous time at Long Lake during the summer of 2012. She made really close friends, had fantastic experiences in the play and the circus, and even did some fine art. She was so busy she didn't even have time to take advantage of the spectacular waterfront! It's been six weeks since she came home, and she's still talking about camp constantly, and Facebooking with her camp friends. Long Lake staff is warm, attentive, experienced, and just plain great with the kids. The facilities are exceptional. Even the food was good--judging by Parents' Weekend--but my kid said it was good during session, too. Everything about this camp is great. We're sending both kids next summer. RID: 42853
Click to report rating    9/25/12   5     5     5     5     5   This was the best camp ever for my kids! My kids say these were the best 3 weeks of their lives. Everything here was professional, the staff, the facillties, the activities, and the kids! My children participated in the dance program, the musical, music lessons, the F.A.B. , water front, and circus. Everything here was wonderful and my kids had the time of their lives! The unit leaders were wonderful and my daughter said her unit leader was one of the things that made camp wonderful. I really reccomend this camp for everybody, you really can't go wrong with this place. Money wise it was worth every penny! RID: 42762
Click to report rating    4/26/12   5     5     5     5     5   Amazing camp!! You will never regret to send your kids there. Circus, theater, broadway, singing, art and crafts, sport activities- everything is excellent. If your child is not a performer and like adventure, or one subling wants to perform and another not and you don't want to separate them - you will find place for everybody, because camp has advanture group of kids also. Also, not huge size of camp so, everybody knows each other and had a personal attention from staff. Parents are invited to watch kids productions for last two days of camp. And parents are becoming friends too! Surrounding nature gives you another point of pleasure. Do not even think twice!! Cost every penny! RID: 40878
Click to report rating    3/20/12   4     4     5     5     5   My daughter has gone for the past 2 summers and is going back again this summer. She has had great theatre experiences. Some of the bunks for the girls are in need of renovation but the camp facilities are wonderful. Last year when she was 12, I think that the girls could've used a little more intervention from staff at times but in general, the staff is fantastic, they have wonderful counselors who really do keep in touch with the families. Click to report rating    2/28/12   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter has gone to this camp for 3 years. It is A++ Theatre and dance performances were outstanding. Fine art opportunities enormous. She made jewelry and ceramic pieces that were high quality. Circus Arts was top notch. She made lots of friends. Well supervised; directors know all kids individually. Food great; great field trips. Beautiful lake, well utilized. Even spent time learning how to throw and catch a football (unusual for my child). Discussing overnight hiking experience for this coming summer. Couldn't ask for better experience. Has everything you could ask for! RID: 40415
Click to report rating    11/29/11   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter has attended Long lake Camp for the Arts for 2 summers now. I cannot say enough about the programs and the people who run them. The staff is professional and caring. Parents are called each week by a counselor to be updated on their childs camp experience. The facilities are top notch. My daughters skills have improved greatly each summer. She has made life long friends. The enviroment is nuturing. Every childs talent is celebrated. The performances are wonderful and the they provide professional sound, make up, costumes and 2 large theaters. My daughter looks forward to returning and the only downfall I can see is that they only take children up to 16. RID: 37384

Click to report rating    12/15/08   5     4     5     5     5   I went to this camp and it was AMAZING!! The only thing I didn't was the 5 minute talking on the phone rule and sometimes the food wasn't the best. I wouldn't come here for sports, only if you want to be in performing arts and art things. Overall its a wonderful place, and I would definately recommeded it. This place will always be a great memory. RID: 28029

Click to report rating    2/17/08   5     4     5     5     5   My summers at Long Lake truly made me the person that I am today. It is my my favorite place in the entire world and offered me so many incredible opportunities and experiences that i will be forever grateful for. Each of the Arts programs at Long Lake are spectacular and the performances that are put on are very high quality, and a wonderful time for campers. Long Lake also offers many activities you probably never be able to do elsewhere, like flying trapeze, modern dance, or wakeboarding to mention a few. It is really just an awesome place wether you are a dedicated performer or artist already, or if you are just looking to have some fun for the summer. The people are fantastic, be they camper, counseler, director. Long Lake is truly a wonderful place/ RID: 20347

Click to report rating    5/5/07   5     5     5     5     5   long lake is the most amazing place in the entire world! i don't know what you're talking about when you say they ignore people with no talent. i first learned how to sing there! my teacher was nice and not rejecting or anything just because i was inexperienced! furthermore, long lake rocks (literally!) and its totally worth the money (though it is a lot). it has a friendly environment and no one looks down on others or anything. whoever you are and WHEREever you are, if you love singing, dancing, acting, playing music, or even the fine arts, then long lake is most definetly the place for you! Click to report rating    3/15/07   1     5     1     1     1   This was the worst experience of my life. Because I am not super talented, I do have a good voice, no one payed any attention to me. On the first day there we had to audition in front of everybody and then you get a callback. I never got any callbacks. In the end a director had to do me a special favor and cast me in a big production where i could be in the backround. And every time i went to the art center none of the teachers would help you they would say do it yourself. And one day i wanted to play softball so i asked the softball person and they are like ya go find the people and the ball and the bat and the bases and start playing. and i am like what??? some kids there have agents and are really snooty. basically i hated it and i am never going back. Click to report rating    12/1/06   5     5     5     5     5   LONG LAKE CAMP is the best thing that ever happened too me (well at least one of them)! I love it - the just re-done lakeside is amazing! Actually all the bunks aree, the stages are way better than any school I have ever seen and they actually have good plays that they put on! RID: 5581
Click to report rating    11/13/06   3     4     3     2     2   While my child attended for several years, last year was the last. The camp promises many fabulous field trips which do not occur. They offer many popular classes/lessons which fill up quickly so many of the campers interested can not participate. If your child is already talented/experienced in an area, they get wonderful attention treatment. If not.... Biggest complaint, however, is with the camp owner/director. When I attempted to speak with him regarding a concern, I basically was told he was not interested and feel free to take my child elsewhere. Speaking with other parents at the local hotel that night, I got a lot of knowing looks/comments as I was in no way the first to have this type of experience. Shows were not that much better than a good local high-school production (but still impressive given short turn-around time) I'm not saying don't send your child here. However, given the amount of $$$ they ask for, proceed with caution.. RID: 4921
Click to report rating    8/8/06   5     5     5     5     5   a great enviornment for the serious arts student. professional staff are excellent teachers. much personal attention- private music lessons and unit leaders for each age group to look after children. very expensive, but you're paying for the staff and activites, not the boarding accomidations or food, which both leave something to be desired. international staff and campers add interest to the mostly wealthy, jewish crowd. mostly non-competitive for parts and such, but older campers can get catty. no sports required, but many enjoy the waterfront. only for the self motivated child though- no one forces kids to do activites. overall, highly recommended RID: 1904
