I really felt independent- even if there were college students guiding us, they treated us well, respected our ideas. Not only did we have freedom enough to be ourselves, but also it was nice to break that barrier from of high school - and be the cool kids based on something genuine.

My child did not benefit from this so called program one bit. What a farce. Spend your money on any other summer camp.

The organization of camp had several serious flaws. The social aspect is really poor. Your kid is stuck with a small group of kids of same gender with optional participation. For a kid who is not used to discussion in a big classroom, please don't expect your kid will develop any group discussion skills through this experience because that's not what they work on. From the final presentation, you could tell the huge variation in PAs’ ability to lead and inspire a discussion. Besides reading books, there were not much physical activities. Although bathing suit and beach towel were on the packing list, swimming was not offered even once during the two-week period. On most days, the activities I heard was wandering to town visiting either an ice-cream shop or a gift shop. The selection of reading materials was often odd and irrelevant to the campers’ lives. I was impressed initially to hear that my kid selected philosophy as an optional learning and learned about Nietzsche. But then I fo

Great Books is like a second home. Honestly, it is one of the only places that I feel like I can be myself. The discussions and electives are always great, unless you're not in the mood and just want to relax, which happens a lot. Although it's intellectually stimulating, the social aspect is one like no other. The bonds you form with people at Great Books literally last you a lifetime. They are like family. The sense of community is so intense. I would recommend this camp to anyone who enjoys philosophical discussions and a tightly woven community that is always open to new perspectives and opinions.

Very interesting readings - great activities like team building and fun things like foam sword fighting. Food you will love. The dorms are terrific. Lots of bonding time with the other kids and the staff. Very friendly - they make everyone feel welcome. I can't wait to go back!

I would go back for sure. The food was very good, discussions were boring sometimes, the electives were fun and you got to show what you learned at the end and i didn't like that at first then i was open to it. It's pretty exspensive but it was a good camp. I came back and it helped me be able to particapate in discussions in school because i knew exactly what they were talking about. The PA's were so much fun and cery nice and helped me with anything i needed. The showers/bathrooms were keeped nice and good. I would go back it was fun and a good learning experience! I also met new friends i wouldn't have otherwise met. Well, i hope that review helps you!:)

Great Books was a great camp. I had soooo much fun and I met a lot of new people. The lectures were great and interesting because people were putting in their own opinion which built up the discussions. I am definitely planning on going back for the third year.

The discussions were boring, and we went over the same thing 2 too many times. It was a little too much like school. Amherst College Dorms were the best! My counsler was pretty good. Actually, the writing elective was fun. I also learned about my new favorite author: Franz Kafka. It was extremely relaxed, and layed back, which was good and bad. End result: Would I go back? Probably not, but at the time, it was definently not bad.

I did not enjoy this camp at all. The staff were incredibly mean, the discussions, though they made sense, were boring and useless, the "extracurricular" activities were horrible, and I never want to go there again. The only good thing I found was the food, which was delicious the whole week. The instructor for the writing side let one kid personally comment in a very ruse manner on my writing in such a way that he led everyone but my friends to believe that I was lying and did not know what I was talking about. The lectures did not keep me occupied and I was left to think about my homesickness. I was really happy when my mom came to pick me up on the last day. I will never go there again, and I am sad that this happened to be my first sleep-away camp experience. I do not recommend going.

Great Books was the best camp I have ever been to; an experience I will never forget. It was not intimidating nor were the "nerds" nerdy. There were great discussions because everyone brought their own opinions and beliefs to the table but were open to hear other points of view. Discussion leaders never implied that there was a "correct answer" so we were free to come to our own conclusions. Campers were from all over the country [and world, really] and everyone was friendly with everyone else. It is quite expensive but scholarships are available. I hope to go back this summer!
