3/15/19   3     5     5     5     4   I went for 4 years in the 70s and visited in the early 2000s. Everything being posted in other reviews is accurate. Sangamon was magic for my heart and well being, I still use experiences I had there. However, I was sexually assaulted by the owner Larry Smith. He is now long dead. The other staff were wonderful to me. RID: 52505
Click to report rating    1/12/14   3     1     4     3     3   My son went to this camp and for the most part he enjoyed himself. I wish I'd thought to check out the bathrooms because it turned out they were very unclean -- you know it's bad when an 11-year old is offended! Some staff seemed genuinely interested in the campers but others were mildly interested at best. For the money, and based on my conversations with staff prior to camp, I was expecting more. Click to report rating    6/25/13   4     2     2     4     3   my primary issue with this camp related to former camp director, Larry Smith, who had a less than stellar repuation -- I hope he is no longer involved? I went there many years ago....in the 80s. RID: 44886

3/17/13   5     5     5     5     5   I was a camper, and later a staff member, at Camp Sangamon for over 10 years. I can say, without exaggeration or hesitation, that my time at Sangamon is one of the most significant positive influences on my life. The friends I met, lessons I learned, and skills I developed while at Sangamon have been invaluable to me as I've grown through life. Sangamon taught me the values of hard work and play, conservation, independence, creativity, and respect and appreciation for the people and natural world that surrounds us. I know I'm making it sound a little too perfect perhaps, but I literally wouldn't be the same person without it. I love the place with all my heart. I couldn't recommend it more if you're looking for a summer camp that will be a great positive influence on your children. Once I have some of my own, I can't wait to share Camp Sangamon with them.  3/13/13   5     4     5     5     5   Our 3 sons have all attended Sangamon, from young campers, up through the counselor training program & now to the staff level. When I picked the older 2 up that first summer, the first words that greeted me were "Can I come back for longer next summer?". They have been going back ever since! They have made lifetime friends from all over the country & the world (although the majority are from New England & the Mid-Atlantic areas). They have tried new things & learned to be responsible. The facilities are rustic, but always improving, often with the help of the kids in the counselor training program (more new skills). Each child approaches the many options differently. Some do a lot of one thing until they gain competence. Others seem to try a lot of different things. The best part is that they get to choose. Also, no electronics, so it's a needed break from sitting in front of a computer screen. RID: 43971

Click to report rating    3/10/13   5     4     5     5     5   My son went to Sangamon for the first time last summer (2012) after he'd just turned 9. It was his first time at sleep away but he had been to a couple of day camps before. Hands down this was the best camp experience he's had. He was talking about coming back next summer before we'd even left the grounds on pick-up day. It was a great match for his level of independence and he really loved being able to make his own decisions about what he did each day. But he also said that it wasn't just the fact that he was able to make his own choices that was so great, it was the many kinds of activities he had to choose from. He also loved the staff members and they clearly made him very comfortable; the camp community feels like a big family. He couldn't stop talking about Sangamon for weeks after and can't wait to go back. We couldn't have chosen a better camp for him. RID: 43937
Click to report rating    3/10/13   5     5     5     5     5   I spent years at this camp as a camper and staff. It's hands down the best place for a kid to build independence, instill respect for the outdoors, and make life-long friends. Highly recommend!! RID: 43935
Click to report rating    3/9/13   5     5     5     5     5   My four summers at Sangamon from 1985 to 1989 were, quite simply, the best part of my childhood. Sangamon takes its Pioneer Spirit slogan seriously - this is a place for Free-Range Kids to get away from screens, explore, play, discover an amazing bit of New England and live much more intensely than is possible during the rest of the year. The intense camaraderie of life in those tiny, hand-made, off-the-grid wooden cabins, the togetherness around a camp-fire, the excitement of so many different activities you just never get to play at in normal city life, from tending real farm animals to early morning dips in the pond to weaving on an actual loom and pottering on an actual pottery wheel. After my first summer, I would spend all year looking forward to it. Sangamon is just a special place. RID: 43924
Click to report rating    1/30/13   5     3     5     5     5   I went to Sangamon for six years as a camper and a CIT, and I absolutely loved it. Unlike some other camps, at Sangamon you can choose your own schedule everyday and go to any of the wide range of activities they offer. They don't drag you around in a group and you choose what to do, but at the same time the camp is small enough that you also do get plenty of personal attention from the staff. Sure, the facilities are not top notch, but that's just all part of the pioneer spirit. I can honestly say that Sangamon was my favorite place on Earth as a child, and I still think about camp regularly to this day. RID: 43537

Click to report rating    5/16/12   5     4     5     5     5   I spent 13 summers at Sangamon as both camper and staff. Started at the age of 8. With it's rustic cabins, many activities (from swimming to horseback riding), traditions and family values, the camp with the pioneer spirit continues strong to this day. As I live my life I find that I can draw from my summers at camp to help me through life's challenges. Rickity, rackity, run, it's off to the hills for fun! RID: 41061

Click to report rating    10/5/10   5     5     5     5     5   Everything about Sangamon is truely spectacular, starting with its amazing staff every year. I will be returning for my eighth year, but yet I have as much excitement for the upcoming summer as if it was my first. I have gone to camp as a camper, counselor-in-training (CIT), apprentice, and next summer, as an intern (hopefully, I have to apply). Through this system, I never have had the feeling that I have outgrown camp. Every activity is a personal experience. I never got the feeling of being just another face, but an important individual. From kayaking in a beautiful lake to woodworking in a rustic, yet modern and safe woodshop, Camp Sangamon provides the perfect summer experience for anyone. However, camp doesn't end with the summer, the morals, social skills, and solid work ethic that I have learnt at camp shine into my everyday life. Unfortunately, Sangamon is an all boys camp; however, there is a sister camp, Betsy Cox, which is paralleled in the Sangamon's excellence. RID: 34191

Click to report rating    12/1/08   5     4     5     5     5   I have sent my two boys to Sangamon for the past several years, and I cannot say enough good things about this summer camp. The mature and diverse and often international staff, the food, the farm, the activities, the freedom and the growth opportunities. Rocketry, archery, arts, sports, sailing all while living in a great environment with a great philosophy. RID: 27797
