One of the instructors even participated in the bullying and then lied to Joel and Joel made it a public incident but then when a complaint was lodged, and other kids told Joel the instructor was lying, Joel had the instructor speak to the kid but then the instructor said everything was good and left. No real apology. No accountability. However, the college campus is great. Not a lot allowed to do much there but the dorms are nice. RID: 53238
Click to report rating    8/24/19   1     1     1     1     1   Kicked my daughter and her friends out for pulling a practical joke. My daughter stepped forward and confessed and apologized even though she would have never have been caught. Joel immediately tossed her out anyway. This is after she'd been at this camp for her 3rd year. Basically Joel is a prick with little or no ability to deal with children. I am glad he is no longer running this camp. Btw, she was tossed out on her birthday. Unfortunately I never took him to court. RID: 52853
Click to report rating    4/10/13   3     4     3     4     2   My son went to this camp for two summers where he recieved great tennis instruction. However he had many problems with Joel over minor issues such as coming a few minutes late to meals. One week into camp Joel called and told him he wanted my son gone immediately. He had never had any problems like this so I was shocked. In the end it was a complete waste and I'm never sending him back there again. RID: 44238

8/16/11   5     5     5     5     5   Camp is absolutely great. There are many different electives for campers to select. However, they totally focus more on tennis at this camp. They also gain so much experience in playing tennis matches cause they often have tennis ladder matches. Plus, the quality of tennis level is high. There are a lots of good tennis instructors and good tennis campers as well. Nonetheless, there are all kinds of level which is suitable for each individual camper. Campers always miss camp after leaving RID: 36737

2/24/11   5     5     5     5     5   I worked at Joel Ross summer camp for three summers and I enjoyed my experience. First, Joel developed really nice program of activities in order for kids to have fun. He keeps them always busy, which is very good in my opinion. However not all kids are happy when they have to follow the program, since they want their own freedom. Esspecially older kids. Second, I was very satisfied with the fact that Joel hires many international counselors. I found it very interesting to meet people from all over the world. Third, Joel is very responsible with his job. He is very strict, because he has his camp for many years and he knows that children need to follow certain rules and discipline. He always knows his campers by names--ALL OF THEM! And he is very concerned to keep ALL the campers happy and comfortable. That is the reason he is so strict with children who bully, misbehave, etc.... I really enjoyed working there and be glad to come back. Also, food is great there. RID: 35193

2/22/11   5     5     5     5     5   I love Joel Ross camp. I have worked thier last 4 summers. It is just amazing opportunity to work with kids, make new friends, and experience in professional work. Keep children being active, having fun, and improving thier sport abilities are the main goals of the camps. The camps do not only provide awesome food, beautiful enviroment, and work with many friendly and talented stafffs. It also gives the children a chance to experience independent lives and build thier amazing friendly relationship with other.. Sign up soon and see what the camp can do for you... RID: 35174

2/11/11   5     5     5     5     5   My two children attended Joe Ross last summer. They had a great time. They improved their tennis skills, made great friends, and they are looking to return back this summer. I worked there as a camp nurse. I was very please with the directors and the staff. These are people who care for children.Plus the food and facilities are amazing. I am looking forward to return this summer. RID: 35075

2/11/11   5     5     5     5     5   I was a counselor and the experience was amazing. The camp is structured around fun activities that enhance sports skills and promote socialization. The campers in my dorm hall formed close friendships that have carried over outside of camp. The golf program has significantly improved over the years. Golfer have the opportunity to play a number of local courses. Golfers leave almost every morning but often return in time to participate in other activities such as swimming and electives. An overall great experience! RID: 35074

2/11/11   5     5     5     5     5   I would highly recommend this camp! I was a camper there for many years and then worked there as a counselor. It's a very intimate setting and everyone is able to get to know each other really well. Campers get a lot of individual attention whether they are in the tennis program or the golf program. The staff is amazing and the food was so good - I still miss it! The campus is beautiful and I loved staying in the dorms. This camp becomes a home away from home. I have been to many camps over the years and this was definitely my best camp experience! RID: 35073

Click to report rating    10/22/10   2     1     3     1     1   Just OK for golf, we didn't send our son for tennis. We were disappointed in the amount of instruction that was actually given. Were looking for a serious golf camp for next summer. RID: 34278

9/1/10   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter went to Joel Ross last summer and she had a great time! I plan on sending her back next summer for 4 weeks instead of 2. She still talks about the friends she made and the counselors! RID: 33949

8/17/10   5     5     5     5     5   My twin daughter & son attended this camp & had the time of their lives. My husband & I couldn't believe how much they improved (they were intermediates before camp)...now they just want to play matches against us. They don't stop talking about the counselors & the fun they had at night in the dorm. They saw a snake on a hike! They attended for 2 weeks & we are considering 4 weeks next summer. We think it is a good value. Highly recommended! RID: 33766

7/19/10   1     2     2     1     1   This camp is a total disaster. Joel is evil and dishonest. My daughter went to this camp for 2 weeks. She had a very good time and Joel twisted our arms to have her come back for next session. We made many changes in several events for the family to accommodate. In the following session, Joel told my daughter that people were complaining about her within an hour of her arrival. A few days later he called me about an issue in the dining room that was very minor. Then at 10:30 on Sunday night he called and told me that I had to pick her up at 9 the next morning and take her home. He said "this place is not working out". He told my daughter at 8:30AM to pack her bags and go home. He made her feel 2 inches tall. She is totally depressed because of his treatment of her. He refused to honor his commitment for refunding money and lied that he even made it. He forced me to miss a day of work to pick up my daughter. He should not be let anywhere near children. STAY AWAY! RID: 33385

Click to report rating    10/7/09   2     2     3     1     1   I have to agree with other reviews and the golf program at this camp is not much. It's obviously more of a tennis camp and I wish we had known that before we sent our son. I'm doing research now to find a better golf program. RID: 31252
Click to report rating    7/18/08   3     4     4     3     2   This really is a tennis camp in all intents and purposes, as the golf program is pretty much a joke. The tennis, however, is much better in terms of personal attention and overall enjoyment. Like previous commenters have mentioned, while beginner tennis players (as well as advanced ones) are welcomed at JR, the same cannot be said for golf players who are just starting to learn how to play. The counselors are either actual athletes or simply there to collect a paycheck for babysitting. Keep in mind that I went to JR in 2006, so things may have changed, but I doubt anything major has been done between then and now. RID: 24925
Click to report rating    7/12/08   5     5     5     5     5   I loved this camp! I'm a tennis player and all this camp has done is made me love tennis even more. I heard that it ISN'T for golf-players, but since I'm not one, it doesn't change my overall opinion of the camp! This would be my 3rd year going, and I am already counting down the days! There was a lot of tennis, but all in all it only does a body good. The food was excellent and the facilities astounding. There is nothing better than being right on the Housatonic River with people you love. Most of my friends are going back this year, and the relationships you make with some people are amazing! I know it can be expensive, but if you're an intense tennis player looking to get devoted training and a memorable summer, don't hesitate to register for next year's program!! RID: 24782
Click to report rating    1/10/08   3     1     1     1     1   I think this is basically a Tennis Camp. We sent our son for golf and were really disappointed with the instruction and the facility. I wish we would have known that the structure of the camp was more for tennis. RID: 18827
Click to report rating    7/7/07   5     4     5     5     5   I loved this camp...I don't get what you guys are talking about with all of these negative comments...I met amazing people here and I will always remember them and I can't wait for our reunion already, it's a great camp with even greater kids. I love you all to death. -Emily RID: 12807
Click to report rating    7/6/07   5     5     5     5     5   JOel Ross 07 - cant wait for 2nd session btw, i dont kno wat ur all talking about but all the groups were 4 of less people on a court. And everything was so fun... xoxo RID: 12788
Click to report rating    3/29/07   5     5     5     5     5   I dont see what everyone is complaining about. I didnt expericence the golf program but the tennis was amazing. There were groups of 4, not 6, and the instruction was great. Yeah it was buggy but what can you expect its right on a river. Joel was really into it and was an amazing tennis plaer. Could beat anyone in the camp. This tennis camp is great and HIGHLY recommended. RID: 9198
Click to report rating    2/6/07   1     2     2     1     1   We sent our son this camp for golf and were very disappointed. I can't speak for the tennis program, but the golf program was very unorganized and overpriced. The staff was young and inexperienced which led to second rate golf instruction. I may think about this camp for a tennis player, but if you have a golfer, look elsewhere. RID: 7569
Click to report rating    12/9/06   3     5     4     4     4   I went here over the summer, and I have to say the Golf program made me want to switch to Tennis immediately. If you're a beginner, don't even consider the camp, because they won't hesitate to isolate you from all of the other kids and put you with kids a little more than half your age. The food is good and the counselors are alright (for the most part). They make you work all day though, breaks are about 15-30 minutes long, and the only reason they stopped that for a couple of days is because it was about 103 degrees and they didn't want kids dying on them. Like another comment, golfers almost never swim (you pretty much have to demand to). As far as the tennis program goes, you're broken up into groups of about 5-6 based on skill, and you switch based on "ladder matches" each week, sort of like a tournament in which you move up (or down) courts depending on who you beat or lose to. All in all, it's a good tennis camp, and unless you know what you're doing, a horrible golf camp. RID: 5830
Click to report rating    12/3/06   2     1     1     2     2   The kids and counselors weren't my favorite at the camp. We would always sweat playing endless boring sports games. The bugs are AWFUL; there were myriads of mosquitoes. Food is good and the tennis was so-so. I felt the owners just wanted money. The camp is extremely dirty and filled with bugs. RID: 5613
Click to report rating    11/6/06   1     1     1     1     1   If you go to this camp, I hope you get some decent counselors, I did the golf at segment. Which wasn't very good. If it wasn't for Kevin, I don't think my game wouldn't have gotten any better. He understand the golf swing better than anyone else and he makes it easy to learn. Kyle and Marc were horrible, they didn't pay any attention to us and they thought it would be a good idea to take naps while on the driving range. My parents were furious with Joel as he seperated us from other campers for most of the day, every day. Don't send your kids here. RID: 4639
Click to report rating    9/5/06   4     5     5     4     5   This is more of a Tennis Camp with a small Golf Program than a Tennis and Golf Camp. There are about 20 courts with different surfaces, with 4 of them being indoors. The Golf program has kids traveling to about 3 or 4 different courses, although this is really suited for kids who are into golf. NOTE: Kids in the golf program will not be able to go swimming, because during that time they are still at the course. By the end of the day, pretty much everyone is exhausted, but almost everyone has a good time. RID: 2839
