Click to report rating    6/19/19   5     5     5     5     5   I attended Camp Stewart in the summers of '86-'89 and can honestly point to the experience as one of the biggest factors in my development from a boy to a young man. This is a southern style old-school camp steeped in values and tradition. My eldest son is attending the 2nd session this summer (like his father before him) and my youngest will be there in about 6 years. Over the years some things have changed (as all things must- it's not as rugged as it once was and they now offer many options ranging from 1 week to 4 whereas in my time there it was 4 weeks 5 days), but Stewart remains every bit as great as it was there as a camper. They also do father/son and mother/son weekends for alumni like me and fathers who are new to it to attend with their sons and get a taste of what Stewart has to offer. "Don't wait to be a man to be great, be a great boy!" RID: 52691
Click to report rating    6/17/17   5     5     5     5     5   I myself attended Camp Stewart, it was the best camp i have ever been to. It tought me so much about how to be responsible, creative, and social. The staff there are very good at what they do and all of them are very well educated. If you are thinking about sending your kid to Stewart i strongly advise you to. And the activities that the camp has to offer are really fun and they all teach your kid something and some are for them to get out of their comfort zone, i think this is a really important aspect in any camp. -Matthew Carpenter, Age,13 RID: 50840

7/30/15   5     5     5     5     5   My 11 year old has now completed four summers at Camp Stewart - two 2 week terms and 2 four week terms. My wife and I can't say enough great things about Camp Stewart! The camp has been instrumental in my son's character development. This summer, in particular, he came back almost a different boy - much more responsible, patient with his younger brother, and mature. The camp slogan "Don't wait to be a man to be great, be a great boy!" certainly is coming true with my son. Thank you Camp Stewart! RID: 48971
Click to report rating    11/8/14   5     5     5     5     4   Nothing compares to the intangible growth my son has experienced after attending for the past 3 summers. No other experience can teach him to get along well with others, learn his place in the world and gain confidence. The owners truly care about the boys and now send their own son. I encourage everyone to allow their boys to stand on their own two feet. Their future wives will thank you! RID: 48132
Click to report rating    8/11/14   5     5     5     5     5   Our son just completed his first year at camp and didn't want to leave. We were so impressed with the counselors and the personal attention to our son. What we were most excited about was how his personality and confidence in groups seemed to just blossom and grow. Our son has always been the quiet and shy person in the group, but Stewart brought the leadership and best out of him! RID: 47828
Click to report rating    8/4/14   5     5     5     5     5   All 3 of my boys have been attending Camp Stewart for over 8 summers. The experience they have had is second to none. There are so many things thy can choose to do and simply "be a boy". The staff is family-oriented, the food is homemade, the atmosphere is conducive to having fun. The Ragsdale family has made a positive experience in my boys lives and each year they look forward to the summers simply for camp. I recommend heading down for a visit to see firsthand what Camp Stewart is all about. RID: 47778
Click to report rating    8/4/14   5     5     5     5     5   My son attended Camp Stewart for the very first time in July. He had the time of his life. He is so busy during the school year with sports and school that we wanted a camp experience where he could spend a few weeks just having fun doing "boy" stuff. His time at Camp Stewart well exceeded our expectations. Not only did he enjoy swimming, canoeing, archery, camping out, horseback riding, etc, he learned and practiced important life skills like the value of service, public speaking, setting goals and not giving up on those goals when you don't make it on your first or second try. He insisted we preregister him for next year before we left camp. I highly recommend the long term Camp Stewart experience to any parents considering a sleep away camp for their son. RID: 47777
Click to report rating    8/4/14   5     4     5     5     5   I attended Camp Stewart in 1979. My twins have just finished their second year at Stewart (2014). I was floored when we were in the area three years ago and dropped in for look around the camp. The owners remembered me, asked about my parents, and told stories about me as a camper that I remember. So little has changed in the camp in the way of spirit and mindset, but much has changed in the way of new facilities (horse rings, water activities, rock wall, etc). My boys attend a private school. We wanted our boys to attend a camp that was not just an extension of their school year. I think "roughing" it a little (Texas Hill Country style) is good for the boys. Camp Stewart provides an environment where the boys have tons of activities and personal challenges for advancement. I can see the personal growth and confidence after just a few weeks. Is there anything better than having your son explain all his merit badges and metals? RID: 47773
Click to report rating    6/27/14   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Stewart has been such a posative experience in our son's life. The owners, counselors and other children are great. He enjoys the freedom to just be a boy for 4 weeks every summer! The owners and staff love these kids like they were their own. They keep these kids busy and have such a great time and really stress their motto "Don't wait to be a man to be great, be a great boy!" Highly recommend. RID: 47468
Click to report rating    6/18/13   5     5     5     5     5   My son has been going to this camp for nine summers and has felt safe and happy every year. His councelors have been awesome and there was never a problem. He was there the year of the issue and I promise they didn't try to cover anything up. Parents were informed immediately! My son didn't even have a clue anything had been going on. His group was far away from the issues. The camp has gone above and beyond to fix any problems and I trust them totally with my child! Don't look at the one item in an long history of great summers! RID: 44794
Click to report rating    1/30/13   5     5     5     5     5   I attended Stewart as a camper for several years and also as a counselor as well. I personally always had a safe and fun environment every summer. I made life long friends there and many of those friends have entrusted their sons to return to Stewart to learn the skills, leadership, and positive christian values that have always be taught and upheld there. I have seen many improvements and upgrades to the facilities and camper safety over the years as the owners are constantly trying to make improvements with every the return of every summer. The staff, the owners, and campers are always top notch. The life skills, activity skills, personal confidence and leadership learned here by virtually every camper is priceless. I trust the staff and owners at Stewart with my own son and recommend this prestigious camp, with its enduring history to anyone looking to give their son a great learning and life experience. Any negative reviews found, I can assure you are the exception, not the rule RID: 43535
Click to report rating    9/17/12   5     5     5     5     5   Without a doubt, this is a great camp! My son has attended for the past 6 summers since he was six years old and plan at least 6 more. Activities are perfect and there is plenty of time spent at each activy to develop those skills. Staff and owners have gotten to know my son and and family and consider them and extended part of my family!! RID: 42694
Click to report rating    9/3/12   5     5     5     5     5   I cannot say enough great things about Camp Stewart, its owners and staff. My son's father and uncle attended Camp Stewart as a boy every summer from the age of 7 to 14. I was very excited to send my son here and was not disappointed. This was my son's first year and the personal growth he experienced and self-esteem he gained is amazing. When I picked him up after his 2 week term, he told me he can't wait to come back for 4 weeks next year. Every staffer we encountered was friendly and happy and I was astounded at how quick they were to introduce themselves to us. It was very clear that his cabin leader, Daniel, had studied the information sheet we provided on my son and was genuinely interested in him. I especially enjoyed the daily photo upload and blog updates from the director and owner. This place is a special slice of Boy Heaven! Love it!! RID: 42582
Click to report rating    8/7/12   5     4     5     5     5   I've been going to this camp for the last 4 years and i've got to say that in itself the camp is amazing, i have a great time every year. The tradition, campire, advancement...everything is great about it...however I am concerned because they are losing campers every year mostly due to what happened in 09. But that is long gone and Camp stewart is probably one of the safest camps in the US due to some great improvements over the last 3 years. RID: 42258
Click to report rating    7/31/12   1     1     1     1     1   My children attend another wonderful camp in Texas, I would not send my boys here. There have been charges of abuse by a foriegn counselor that I heard the camp tried to cover up. There are many better choices available. RID: 42172
Click to report rating    7/5/12   4     5     5     4     4   I thrust that Camp Stewart for boys was a very great camp! RID: 41569
Click to report rating    7/5/12   3     4     4     3     2   I'd like to echo the commenter above. I worked here several summers ago, and many of the other counselors were hired from abroad. They did not share the Christian values that I was raised with. On our nights off, everyone raced into town to get ****. RID: 41557
Click to report rating    7/2/12   5     3     5     5     5   I have 3 boys now 19, 18 & 15. I have been sending them all to Camp Stewart since each one was 7 years old. I decided to send them to camp so they could learn how to be boys (archery, riflery, etc. activities that did not involve video games). What I got in return blew my mind. All 3 developed massive leadership skills. The oldest was valedictorian, head drum major, Pres. of NHS, & voted Most Likely to Succeed. My 2nd son was salutatorian, Varsity Tennis, Pres. of NHS, voted Most Studious & Most Likely to Succeed (all go to a public 4A school). It looks like the 3rd boy is following suit. Now the oldest 2 are counselors to "give back" and inspire young men to be all they can be. I look back and know their experiences are as valuable as college. You can't put a price tag on the leadership, social skills & confidence they develop. I highly recommend this camp and can't fathom their lives without it. Camp Stewart is phenomenal. Click to report rating    3/29/10   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Stewart has been a positive, uplifting, life-affirming experience for our son for the past 4 years. He returns each summer with greater self-esteem, independence, newly discovered interests & skills. The Thoughts of the Day motivate him & the nondenominational Christian teachings permeate his experience. He insists on going to the father/son weekends during the year. The counsellors from New Zealand, Australia, Ireland & England treat him with complete respect. Gordy, the coordinator, returns my phone calls promptly & immediately addresses questions. Kathy "the Camp Mom" sends fantastic daily email updates- puts her heart and soul into them- & the daily photos are a joy. Stewart has been such a positive, formative experience for my son, & I'm thankful we've had the means to send him. The anonymous negative comments sadden me. When our son discovered the cost he sincerely said, astonished, "You really love me to send me to Camp Stewart." Stewart has earned our lifelong loyalty. RID: 32510
Click to report rating    10/6/09   5     2     2     4     3   I worked at Stewart two summers ago and the camp was great. What I think the problem is, is the people that work under the owner. There son is a spoiled baby that doesnt really know anything about camp. The guys that are suppose to check on the kids are like child grabbers. The year I was there we had a great staff, but with the people in the past the way they are no one wanted to come back. Also the parents told us we had the best staff ever at stewart many times. Also they should upgrade the place, everything in there is old and out dated. Which my be the reason why other camps in texas and around the USA are taking kids from stewart. You can only stay up with your rep for so long. RID: 31237
Click to report rating    7/15/08   5     5     5     5     5   Just wanted to respond to an earlier review... yes last summer (2007) there were some bad apples in the Condor Division (older campers) who made camp life miserable for everyone until they were reported to the staff and swiftly disciplined and will not be welcome back at Camp Stewart ever again. Nonetheless, this is an excellent camp, and my children are returning this summer. The activities are wonderful and my children learned so much and came home happier, more polite, responsible and relaxed. I would recommend talking to other parents of campers and not base your decision on a few internet reviews. RID: 24843
Click to report rating    6/24/08   1     3     4     1     1   I worked at the girls camp down the way. The camp has dance with other camps and be for are dance with them I was tolled not to let my girls close to the male Counselor's. I was tolled tale's that made me sick. At the end of the dance I was walking the path looking for girls kissing. Well the Counselor had driven there own car's and where drinking something that was not to be seen. This is not a place I would send my son or want any of my friends to work at. How ever this can all change over night with the right Counselor's! RID: 24232
Click to report rating    10/10/07   2     4     4     4     4   Camp Stewart for Boys is living in the shadow of a once great past. It was for most of the century THE boys camp in Texas. However the Camp hires mostly Camp America (foreign employees) now who come from countries that do not have the same value systems that most upperclass Texas families come from. One of our families friends worked there this past year, along with some of our familys friends who sent their kids this year. And as a former Stewart boy I was excited however, the report I received was appalling. The religious aspect of Stewart is being phased out, there were at least 3 known homosexual counselors (that in itself should be disturbing), the older boys were constantly in trouble for deviant and crude behavior. Also the counselors are allowed to drink. My godson came home with a whole new vocabulary and knowledge that he did not know before. I was dissapointed to hear all of this and would urge the Stewart ownership to reevaluate the direction this historic camp is headed. RID: 16080
