Click to report rating    1/21/25   5     5     5     5     5   When I was a camper. I remember we had to separate the group 3 times a day. First group was the bunk with the bunk counselor. Second group was the dining room table 1 thru 9 with the same campers eating with you with rotating counselor each week. Third group was activities group with a counselor group 1 thru 9. I remember few campers came from Westchester County NY and New jersey and Philadelphia suburbs RID: 54157

We used to eat dinner at 5pm .The food was so delicious and healthy. Everyone was hungry to eat more. I remember activities were great and interesting. When it rain we used to have entertainment singing and we used to play games in the dining room. After dinner sometimes we had entertainment singer sing folks music and before we went to sleep in our bunk. The camp ground was very neat and clean and new RID: 54145

Click to report rating    10/19/18   2     3     2     1     2   I was a counselor here in tbe summer of of 1985. I really struggled due to the expectations management placed on us We had inadequate training to deal with the issues most children had. Then, these children were pulled from or dropped off by families for 7 weeks, with limited contact during that time with their families. As counselors, We were not supposed to show affection or show that we cared for kids. These were children as young as 8 yrs old. Some received daily letters from their families, others received almost nothing. So, some of us as counselors broke the rules. We snuck in birthday cakes for kids. We gave hugs, we cried when parents did not write letters, and we held children in our arms as they cried themselves to sleep. I often wonder where my group of 8-11 yr old girls are today- mostly Holly, and the others. They were all beautiful, and we tried to convince them to see what we saw in them. My co-counselor (Barb) and I truly loved them. RID: 52304
Click to report rating    6/15/18   5     5     5     5     5   When I went to rock creek farm in 1974. The foods was so delicious that I felt like eating more. They used to cook food fresh. The foods was like a gourmet taste and low fat and healthy. We used to feed the animals and listen to folk music at night time after dinner we had entertainment in the dining room . We used to go to the American flag every morning after breakfast and after dinner to say pledge of leader to the flag. We had to wake up at 7am to be at the dining room for breakfast at 8am. We did wood working and art and craft and boating and every morning we did laps around the lakes. We used to have a cook out. We used to have snack at 2pm at the outside picknick bench. The juice was fresh and the cookies were so delicious. We had to separate into 3 groups. The 1st group was the dorm with one dorm counselor. The 2nd was the dining room with rotating counselor each week. The 3rd group was the activities with one counselor to bring us to the activities counselor and pick us up RID: 51893

Click to report rating    6/10/17   1     3     1     1     1   I was a counselor there back in the summer of 1980. I only worked there for a couple or few weeks. It was a horrible, horrible experience! I quit after a couple or few weeks because the kids were being abused and I was very afraid. I felt so intimidated. Humiliating behavioral challenged kids in front of the whole camp was a daily occurrence. Kids were being abused verbally, physically and emotionally. I wish I had been. strong enough to do something about it. I was so stressed out. I was just a college kid then. I had almost no previous experience or training for the job. Despite that, I was expected to perform physical restraints and manage out of control behavior. I had absolutely no idea of what to do. I did have basic counseling and leadership experience / education but not with behavior management. Looking at this website validates my feelings. It makes sense that campers are still traumatized decades later. I will help if people want testimony for legal action. RID: 50808
Click to report rating    5/24/17   1     2     2     1     1   The worst Out of 4 summer camp I attended In the 1980's. I went for half a summer back in 1984. The consolers were mean and the activities were boring. The food was Crap and I remember going to bed when it was still light out!!!! Plus on the first day they took my transistor radio away only 5to give it back to me my last night. I wonder if they used it for themselves? Just awful. It's a wonder they listed in business so long. wonder why they never got shut down? RID: 50752
Click to report rating    10/30/16   1     1     2     1     1   I must say that the place was run like a concentration camp. The director, Bernie Wray was a person who had an abusive nature and so were some of the other counselors. The only one I liked was the British fellow- Simon Pool. I wonder what Simon is up to these days. I think that the camp ought to be shut down. I hated that Wray lied to my father and just said that there was only ld campers. I had to sleep out at a camp out next to a camper who mentally delayed (severe) and how he made me feel so damn uncomfortable by putting his hands in my sleeping bag. I ran out and told the counselor what this kid was doing, but the counselor stuck back in the same tent and made me endure a lot more of this. I swear that if you have an LD kid, STEER AWAY FROM THIS CAMP!!! RID: 50204
Click to report rating    8/7/13   4     5     5     5     4   I attended there for 6 weeks or so back in the summer of 1972.I was probably 9 or 10 at the time. It was a good learning experience for me. My very first sleep away camp. It was the first step on the road to where I am now. I had childhood learning disabilities and behavior issues. They taught me things that I had never done before in any of my previous camps. RID: 45566
Click to report rating    6/27/13   5     5     5     5     5   I attended in 1977. The camp was run by Bernie and Joanne Wray (Spelling?) The counselors were great and very caring. We had activities that I had never done before (blueberry picking, hiking, etc) We painted an old oil barrel into the likeness of a bee. We created and acted in a play. I grew up there and learned alot about myself and how to handle my anger. RID: 44912

Click to report rating    3/22/12   4     4     4     4     4   i james went to rock creek farm in 1974 for two month. the reason why the counselor and director hits the bad kids and pull their hair and wash their mouth with soapbecause that was the only way to desipline the children. if i went to rock creek farm for one month only i would have like it i jump to two month which was not a good idea. if i did 1 month i would like rock creek farm and come back in 1975 and 1976 for one month. the food at rock creek farm was so good i like eating more. bernie wray and joanne wray made sure everybody eat everything because the food is healthy for the campers like carrott and tomatoes and cheese that has calcium and milk RID: 40594
Click to report rating    8/21/11   3     2     3     2     2   wow after reading these bad reviews it takes me back. I probably knew some of you after the years. Bernie who used to run the camp was a disciplinarian who would hit the kids. This was in the 1970's. The mail thing I remember, also being thrown into "the swimming pond". we had a few good councilors while I was there like John Gunther and Simon pool, oh and becky who really cool. But most were just horrible to the kids. Their motto for years was "It never rains at Rock Creek Farm". Yes it did and it was just one gloomy dark rain cloud over the whole 4 years I was sent there. The activities never changed you have a set schedule for the summer and thats it. You must go boating, swimming, arts & Crafts, Auto Mechanics, wood working, Nature. EVERY DAY Only gold rush week and the hikes broke it up. I honestly think most of the people who worked there would be in jail now a days for what they did to some of us. Only councilor I would like to find is Becky (she was so hot when I was 8) =) RID: 36791

I was yelled at to hurry up climbing rocks when I was having trouble & they didn't want to hear it! the damn place was run like an army barrack! total opposite of camp Ramapo where love & caring was shown! to hell with Rock Creek! I left that crap after 5 days! RID: 29870
Click to report rating    9/8/07   1     2     2     1     1   I just went there and I hated it. The counselors were mean (not necissarily slapping in the face) but MEAN. They forced us to go to bed, and do other things we didnt want to do as well. dont EVER go. they screamed at my friend and i because we couldnt run all the way around the lake and so we had to to it 2 extra times. DO NOT GO because that wasnt even the worst thing. i didnt tell my parents but the one counselor threatened to****me if i didnt do what he said. RID: 15055
Click to report rating    1/15/07   1     3     2     1     1   I went here years ago when I was a kid. It may have changed, since Lloyd Elling took over. Anyway, when I went it was horrible. All my counselors were mean. When I cried from homesickness, they were anything but sympathetic! (I was only six years old at the time.) At bed time, they used to threaten that we would not get our mail if we were not in bed. (Among other things-I recall our head counselor slapping one of the girls in my bunk across the face.) The activities were okay, but you had to do stuff you didn't want to. Not to mention that they made you run laps around the lake before swim. Needless to say, I was relieved to see my parents at the end of the 3 1/2 week session, and I never went back. Since this was my first sleepaway camp experience ever, I came away thinking this was what all overnight camps were like. That is, until I found Camp Northwood in Remsen, NY. Northwood is what all special needs camps should be. But as far as Rock Creek is concerned-Stay Away! RID: 6821
