My daughter (age 10) went last summer for 2 weeks. She had a good time, but doesn't want to return. The camp put her in a cabin with a wide age range (a mistake - she didn't make as many good friends), and sadly her counselors weren't proactive enough in helping the girls bridge differences in age and language (3 kids in my daughter's cabin didn't speak a speck of English). The setting and price can't be beat, but we're going to try elsewhere next summer.

With Kamp Kanawana understand the risks involved. I was a staff for 9 years. 3 years in the infirmary. Camp still had medication that expired 10 years earlier. Safety at Kanawana is not taken seriously. The Director of 06 to 08 would make deals with parents but not share that information. 1 year a camper with extreme breathing problems required a machine to breathe. The director put it in his car and drove to Ottawa for the weekend. The same Director wanted me to cancel an Ambulance for a camper with an injured leg that required several hours of surgery. The standard for an impaled object is to leave the object in place immobilize it, and seek medical attention. The same Director wanted me to pull a nail out of the camper’s foot; the camper required surgery. Staff bullying is entertainment for the staff banquette at summers end called Green Triangle. I wonder as these young people are taught that this behavior is okay; how do they take a campers complaint seriously.

I've been going to camps my whole life. Two years ago I decided to try Kamp Kanawana. It was the best two years of my life. I talk to the girls from my group every day and I meet my counselor once a week. My counselor is now my best friend, and I can honestly say that I spent 10% of my camp time lying in her bed with her laughing about her feet or camp food or what a cute junior had said. I will never forget my experience as it was the most fun thing I had ever done in my life. Everyone is so accepting and it is incredible to step into a separate world where appearance and race and background don't matter, where you are judged on your personality. Kanawana, I love you.

The staff is really helpful and supportive, mostly because they've gone as kids, and know how valuable the experience can be. I've always felt supported and welcomed at KK. The place has so much history and spirit that it's hard not to fall in love. They're big on individual attention, and it's hard to just slip under the radar. If a kid isn't getting along with others, or isn't having fun, there's always someone there to try and make them feel at home. They really focus on good fundamental values like sharing a living space, preserving nature and respecting each other. Things like nice clothes and makeup are taboo. A lot of kids like the fact that it's kind of a break from the city, a chance to be who you really are, not who anyone else wants you to be, or who you feel you have to be to fit in. It's unfortunate though that they're starting to be a lot more strict on things like safety codes and regulations, whereas it used to be more casual.
