Click to report rating    7/16/18   1     2     2     1     2   My daughter has mild hearing loss for which she wears hearing aids. The camp was informed of this and how to best support her. They handled her time at camp so, so poorly! She has gone to sleep-away camp since the age of 7 (now 12) and always had a great time. She is super strong and indipendent and looks forward to camp every summer. Many of the staff were not kind or supportive when she asked for help. She felt like they didn't treat her like a human being and knew absolutely nothing about hearing loss eventhough we informed the camp prior to her attending. She also felt the food was poor quality, and the cabins were so hot and stuffy that she could not sleep at night. There weren't even fans! When we brought our concens to the staff they didn't seem to care, stating "I can't keep track of 200 kids!" In general the staff seemed young, inexperienced and disinterented in making the campers time at the camp fun! All in all it was a HORRIBLE experience! RID: 51997
Click to report rating    8/11/17   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter just returned from her 2nd week this summer at Alton Jones. Last year she attended for a single week. The camp and all staff did an amazing job. She spoke highly of all the activities from games to kayaking to our backpacking adventure. The food was great and their attention to her health and well being was wonderful. Even on a few days that rained they kept them super busy. During one week she bumped her nose and the nurse called and gave me all the details and she said they made sure she iced it. I attended camp back in the late 80's, my sister in the 90's. So glad this camp is close by. I wish they offered an extended camp with 2 week sessions. My daughter's only complaint was that the showers were a bit touchy for hot water. Definitely sending her siblings when they are old enough. RID: 51219

3/28/17   4     4     5     4     4   My daughter went here two years ago. This camp was good, however just for a week or two. My daughter loved it but after two weeks got bored as she stated the programming was the same all the weeks. I found that the camp was on beautiful grounds, however the space the kids used was limited. RID: 50569

7/30/16   1     1     2     1     1   I am livid, did not know no registered nurse on site. It should be a requirement for a camp this size. The lake water dirty. My child developed a bacterial infection in her eye and ears. When I picked her up at 3:30pm on Friday, several counselors informed me my child has been sick all day with thick yellow drainage from her eye, swollen shut, ear ache, belly ache. Why did they not call me so I could pick her up. The counselors took her swimming and through all activities my child was very sick. I drove my child to my local hospital and she was dianosed with a severe bacterial infection in her eye and both ears. Her tempeture was 102. She was prescribed antibiotics for her swollen shut puss draining eye and both ears. I paid for her to attend a second week including paid hor bus transportation. Needless to say my child will not be attending and I don't know if I will receive any refund. Do not send your child!!! RID: 49846
Click to report rating    3/21/13   5     5     5     5     5   Alton Jones is a fabulous camp. The kids love the activities, food, and staff. The woodland campus offers so many opportunities to learn about nature, how to respect nature & also kids learn about themselves and gain self confidence all at the same time. I can't think of a better way to show kids how much fun they can have without their electronics, they are so busy they don't even miss them. Highly recommend this camp!! RID: 44041
Click to report rating    4/15/12   5     5     5     5     5   This camp made a huge difference in my life. I`m now working my wat through college as a an outdoor guide during breaks. Alton Jones introduced me to many outdoor activities and taught me both outdoor skills, and community values such as respect for others and teamwork. It is a place where children are safe, can learn and grow, and will have a great time. RID: 40783

Click to report rating    2/28/09   5     5     5     5     5   Alton Jones was so much fun. our staff member was the best. we learned about so many different subjects like navigation, ecology nocturnal animals and animals in general. Click to report rating    8/24/08   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter was so happy at Alton Jones this summer. I was little concerned that because it was her first experience at an overnight camp, she would be homesick or have difficulty adjusting. She never really felt homesick. In fact, she wished that it had been longer. She said it was the best camp she ever went to and the other campers felt like family. I personally want to thank Alton Jones and the two staff members, Amy and Will for making her time so special. I wish that you did have a longer session. We would be very interested. Click to report rating    9/27/07   5     5     5     5     5   This camp is the best camp if ever been to! It's wicked fun and it has the coolest, funniest and most caring young people as their counselours. I loved this summer, going to camp was the funnest thing this summer. I am really looking forward to another fun summer this year! I love WAJ is so fun! RID: 15647
Click to report rating    8/20/07   5     5     5     5     5   I love WAJ- I've gone with my cousins for the past three years and enjoyed every second of it. All of the counselors are really nice and funny, especially Frodo and his purple gorilla. The food is pretty good too. Even if you have to listen to the badger badger badger song on the twenty minute hike down to the lake, you will have a blast- i guarantee it. RID: 14282

Click to report rating    8/11/07   5     5     5     5     5   W. Alton Jones Camp is great! My friend and I did Night camp, an extension of Earth Camp, and we had the best time.Sunday was moving in day, and the whole camp played games. We went to bed at 10 on Sunday.Monday was cool too, we played games and after every meal you have rec time and one game you can play is Nuke 'Em.Its like Dodgeball on a volleyball court.Monday Night camp went to bed at 12.Tuesday we went hiking and to the waterfront and all the camps played predator vs. prey.Night camp had a night hike, and learned about owls. Night camp went to bed at 3 AM.Wednesday Night Camp woke up at 11 AM and had lunch for breakfast, then we went to the beach front, had cabin time, dinner, rec time. Then Night Camp learned about bats, watched them come out of the barn, went on a night hike, went stargazing, had a pizza party at midnight, played sardines when waiting for the pizza, went on a night hike and had breakfast and went to bed at 9 AM Thursday morning.Cant fit everything else. ~Diondra RID: 13837
Click to report rating    7/21/07   5     5     4     5     5   Alton Jones is very fun. They have extensive programs and things to do. Free time, for Earth Camps, can get a little boring at times. The schedule is very planned out, although Teen Ex sometimes varies due to weather. The food is mediocre. Earth camp food is better, because they have cooks and a cafeteria. Teen Ex's food is, as expected, just OK because it's all nonperishable and made by campers. I wish they had a few more things, but how much is there in Rhode Island. I do think they should offer horse back riding, but they don't have horses. I also think they should have Water Sports. They rules are a bit schoolish, but I do suggest this camp. It's a lot of fun. And oh, did I mention it was fun? We got to go swimming, play games and do great activities. Check out the website, too. RID: 11485

Click to report rating    10/8/06   4     5     5     5     4   Alton Jones is the only camp to consider in the state of Rhode Island. Instead of emphisizing sports, the children are encouraged to pick their sports during their free time. The staff is excellent, except for a few that have a bad day every once and a while. Programs are all year, for schools, summer camp, and a unique Winter Camp that I highly recommend for anyone between the ages of nine and thirteen. The meals are excellent, and the most picky eaters have been able to eat the food, which ranges from roast chicken to scrambled eggs and sausage. The cabins are excellent, especially the double cabin situated in the back. For those that are older, Alton Jones Campus offers expeditions to hike, bike, kayak, canoe, and rappel all over New England. There is also a day camp for younger campers. I highly recommend Alton Jones to all. RID: 3841
Click to report rating    9/18/06   5     5     4     4     5   This is REALLY fun. My 6th grade class went there this year. ('06-'07) We had alot of fun! we especially liked the british counseler. e was KOOL! The night hike was also alot of fun. I rated it this way because like, only 1 kid in my grade who didn't like it. and we only have 30 kids in the whole grade. Its a grate atmosphere and its alot of fun with the other kids. its fun when you are older because, when your older, you got to do more challenging and more fun things. I think this camp is all about teambuilding skills and working together. And, it was really fun, I loved it. The only problem was that the cabins smelled bad and the mattresses smelled like ****. But, we all survived, wel liked rec time, and going through the woods. The food was good, except for the tacos. RID: 3281
Click to report rating    3/18/06   5     5     5     5     5   I think this camp is just fabulous in every way. The counselors are caring and involved, the subjects studied are extremely interesting and well presented in a hands-on approach. Each week is a real learning experience. Both my sons thought the food was great, as was the whole of the physical plant. This camp is wonderful for any child who enjoys science, camping, outdoor activities and nature study all represented in an eco-friendly manner. Respecting the environment is a running theme in the different programs offered. I would not recommend this camp to those with significant interest in sports or competition or without a strong interest in outdoor/nature activities. I think this camp is a terrific value in that not only are the courses in-depth and well-executed, but the camp runs as a non-profit so it's very reasonably priced. I really think my kids had a great, unique experience that they wouldn't get at the typical overnight camp. RID: 21
