my kids have been going to Lokanda for 4 years now and have had a wonderful experience. My son broke his wrist last summer and Lokanda went above and beyond to help him get the best treatment available, taking him to a hospital that was further away in order for him to get the best treatment available. I just had another scare health wise, and Melanie from the health center was amazing, and overly communicative...which is what parents crave for when they are away from their children. My kids have the greatest summers and i know that the staff and facilities are top notch...they are in amazing hands! Thank you Lokanda!!

Our kids just came home from the best summer they have ever had. They can't stop telling stories and sharing their memories with us. It was my daughters 3rd summer and my sons 1st summer. I always felt like they were so well taken care of and so easy to communicate with the staff taking care of them. They posted tons of videos and pictures and we could not be any happier with our choice for a summer home for our kids.

Where do I even begin? This camp has it all, and then some. The sports, water activities, canteen, arenas, cooking activities, arts and crafts etc etc is all top of the notch.The owners do not cut any corners and go way above and beyond not only what is legally needed, but above satisfying the campers. Every year they add something new the camp and each time you are amazed bc its unimaginable how they keep outdoing themselves. Besides the amenities, activities, and the fields, the staff is first class from top to bottom. Everyone is so kind and it literally brings me to tears how each one of the staff members goes out of their way to ensure your child is not just happy but having the time of their life.This was my 9 YOs first year there, and I cant even explain the wonders theyve done for her- her confidence in herself and her abilities have sky rocketed, her shyness disappeared, and she has made friends- younger and older- that I know will be in her life for many years to come.

Amazing camp, amazing experience. Everyone should get this opportunity! I have been a counselor 2 summers. Best two summers of my life. Wish I could go back, but graduating :( and have a job. The kids there are amazing, they make your summer. I am going to miss them so much. The facilities provided in camp for staff on their time off is the best. The staff lounge has everything you could want. They even open the sports facilities at night for the staff. Its amazing to see so many staff all working together to make lokanda 2 months of the best place on earth. Will miss you so much... Red & Grey FOREVER

This will be my kids 4th summer at lokanda and it has been fabulous. The counselors are wonderful, the activities are great and most importantly the kids love it there and have made friends for life. Very happy with overall experience.

I went to lokanda for 6 years and i had the time of my life.I made amazing friends who i still talk to 24 7. I went on a teen tour last summer and i loved it but it could not compare to camp i missed lokanda so much. I cant imagine how different my life would be without lokanda. It really changed my life.

When I go back for this 2010 year i'll be a junior and my 5th year. I started from the lowest age with two other people that are still with me now. One of those two have been in my bunk every summer. This is by far the best camp EVER!!! I have made friendships with some camp people that I am more friends with then my friends back home. That place is my second home. I've had people from NY come down to visit. The staff is really nice and you become friends with them too. I would recommend this camp for anyone. Nobody doesn't fit in. There are friends for everyone at this camp. You also become good friends with the opposite gender too because you hang with them every night. You really get to know the people in your bunk because you are living with them for 2 months. I have a nice bunk bed mate who lives in Florida and we fly all the way from FL every year to get to this camp in Glen Spey NY. We have a 3 hour plane ride followed by a 2 hour bus from FL. It's so worth it!

Camp Lokanda was my life, I went there for ten years from frosh to ultra. I would never trade any experiences ive had there or the friends I've made for the world. However, the new owners are ****s and have no idea how to run a camp whatsoever. Camp is about traditions, you come back because you love them and you love the people you know will be there year after year. These new owners dont get it. Yea, they want to start their new traditions, understandable, but that doesnt mean you need to destroy all the old ones, the ones that made people keep coming back to Lokanda. They paid no attention to the upper camp kids, which yes do pay as much as everyone else who cares there and it was bs. I used to love Lokanda, now it's all gone downhill. I would recommend choosing a different camp, one that really values the camp experience.

I worked at Lokanda and I lived on Girl's teen camp which was awesome because I stayed in the "Big House". I also worked as a semi in another area. Although the food sucks and the living conditions are tough I really enjoyed the experience. I'm not to sure about the new owners because they really seem to know absolutely nothing about running a camp. Neither did the previous owners but they hired people that knew how to run the camp smoothly. Teen Camp is alot different than the lower camps simply becuase you are working with children who are aware of things that are going on. The kids are pretty spoil and sometimes they are disrespectful, there isn't sufficient punishment either, but this camp was a GREAT experience. Just be prepared to spend lots of money because they charge you for everything!!!! The faculty laundry room is a disgrace and the "staff lounge" lol, would be so much better if it was a bit larger with more than 3 computers for 100 STAFF members!

Lokanda is a great experience for any child. At every camp there are bad counselors but they are trained very well before camp starts.Activities are fun and creative and there is never a boring day. The bunks are kept clean and the camp is beautifle. I definatly recomend camp lokanda. I lOVEEEE LOKANDA

this camp is so ugh! there kids and staff are rude and shallow. look across the lake, brookwood is like a million times better than lokanda, there all so nice and friendly when we play games with them, im switching to go to brookwood!

Lokanda is amazing! The staff try there hardest to make sure the kids have a great time! Although the bunks arn't always the nicest it is part of summer camp, same with the food not being great. I just got home from Lokanda and am counting down the days until next year! Lokanda is a place where friends become best friends, and best friends become brothers and sisters! I left camp this year with 27 little sisters, and a bunch of other people i know that i can call fi i ever need someone to talk to :)

first off i'd like to start by saying this is the best camp actually ever I've made countless memories and friends that i know will last a life time and i love them all so much, this camp has provided me with that opportunity. and for all those that are talking abot carpet and club med and blah blah, that is only for the oldest campers, and after spending enough time and money at the camp, i think they deserve it. i'd recommend this camp to anyone, everyone is trying to look out for everyone esle making sure they ahve the best summer possible. everyone that goes to lokanda absolutely adores it... its actually amazing.. RED AND GREY ALWAYS :)

wow, welll i have only been going to lokanda for a year now but i am so excited for a second summer there, subbies '08 is going to be amazinggg...... i cant wait to see my 27 sisters again. my camp experience would be nothing with out themm!! the staff might not aways be the best but when u hve good counselors they are the best counselors everr!!!! even though the food is gross..... i would rather eat it and be there then not be there and not have to eat it........ sending me to lokanda was the best thing my parents have ever done for me!! the new owners this year will amke camp even better...... i am so eacited for this summmer subbies '08! camp lokanda is the best thing that has EVER happend to me. i have been going there 10 years of my life and those are the best years of my life. i love lokanda more then anything. i have made best friends who are now sisters to me and i will never forget anything at lokanda. i wish i could go there forever and ever.

I just finished my first summer working at Camp Lokanda and I cannot wait to go back. I love all of the other staff, but I truly can't wait to see my campers again. They're the ones that made camp so amazing for me. I'm confused by the people complaining that the councelors are treated unfairly. From my experience, the only people that were fired or treated unfairly were the ones doing a bad job (like being inappropriate with another councelor or camper). So, yes, you should be watching your backs because this is a 24/7 job with children. I worked my butt off this summer and was given nothing but praise and respect. I guess Teen Camp is just the place to be! Anyway, camp is great! Lokanda Now and Forever!! :)

My two kids went this past Summer and had a great time. The staff was very attentive to our concerns although the infirmary did not adequately deal with a respiratory infection that spread thru girls campus. In terms of value for money, the camp costs a lot and the facilities are nothing special. I was also horrified at the quality of food my kids reported eating, i.e. mozarella sticks several times a week. The food is kosher which costs more so perhaps they skimp on the quality. Its a very social experience for the kids so don't expect your kids to come home with any kind of new special skills, athletic, cultural or otherwise. That may be enough for some parents.

I worked at this camp for 2 summers and it is an amazing place. The staff and the kids love it but the "higher ups" in the camp are very disrespectful and ungrateful for there staff. They threaten to fire people and do fire people all summer long for sometimes no reason at all. They even fire people just days before the camp ends. However I did go back for a second summer and will continue to work there until they fire me. HA. If your a parent you might be wasting your money but the kids get a true camp atmosphere and that is what camp is about and they go to camp for their friends just like the staff go back for the other staff that they have met from across the world. It may not be the best place to be a staff member but believe me when I say this, it is head and shoulders above A LOT of other camps. So It isn't as bad as it seems, its just not ideal.

I would never go back, and please don't work here, because you'll hate it, and please don't send your child here because you wouldn't want to support this horrible, terrible, disgusting camp. I went to Camp Lokanda both as a Camper and a Counselor. In total, I spent 12 summers of my life in this place, and they were by far the best 12 summers of my life. I made friends who have travelled with me ever since, and I have made memories which will last longer still. Some of the people who are not used to camp are complaining about the facilities, how they have grafiti from the 1950's and they're shacks... That's what camp is! When they tried, several summers ago, to paint over that grafiti a lot of us former campers got very upset by it, that's history they'd be covering up. You don't go to camp for air conditioned bunks and gourmet food, you go for the experience, and Lokanda is #1 as far as that is concerned.

Camp Lokanda is amazing. It is my second home. once the summer rolls around, I know i will be with my brothers and have the best summer yet. 2007 will be my 8th summer, and i have made lifelong friends, both boys and girls. During the year, along with the rest of my friends, long to be at camp, just sitting in our bunks, or the benches, or just walking around camp. The memories will last forever and I know that I have friends to talk to about anything. Camp Lokanda is my favorite place to be, its like no other. Lokanda is my second home, and i have my 29 brothers that love Lokanda just as much as I do.

I am about to go into my 5th year at this camp, and I can't imagine a better place to spend my summers. I have the most amazing memories, and I am so excited for this camp season. My mom went to Lokanda for 13 summers, and she didn't hesitate to send me there when I was only 8 years old. The second I got there I fell in love with everything, the counselors, the facilities, and the friends. It's the best thing that ever happened to me, and I can't say enough about how amazing my experiences have been. It's the best camp in the world. Only if you go there you will experience the magic of it all. Come to lokanda, it's a guaranteed amazing summer.

Camp Lokanda has been the best experience in my whole entire life. I cannot imagine not coming back summer after summer. I started as a little soph and am now going into my subbie year and will continue to go each year. I met the best people of my life there. Spenidng summers with them is undescribable. I love you all so much. If you ever saw this camp your jaw would drop. We have EVERYTHING and more. The counselors are fine. Weve fired QUITE a few but thats there loss because it was there fault. I mean one of our counselors.. oh you dont wanna know. Lokanda is the place where friends become best friends and best friends become sisters. We dread the last day of camp where we have to say goodbye through the long winter. I wouldnt make it through that winter without my camp friends. You guys are amazing times a thousand. Love you all. I worked at this camp a few summers ago and I must say I agree with what a previous poster said about things behind the scene. While the camp does everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, in their power to keep kids happy, its not always kosher. case in point: if your teen daughter's counselor entertains the girls by talking about everything under the sun, its fine because your daughter is happy right? or if your 7 yr old thinks its cool to have a midriff on, its ok as long as she's happy. BUT if a counselor tells the kids to clean up after themselves, she's suddenly evil. a kid complains. camp decides camper isn't happy. counselor gets fired without warning. not exactly the most ethical place. and that's just a minor example. sure your child will be happy but at what price. and for anybody who's thinking of working there, i would reconsider or at least make sure this is a place you REALLY want to be. because having the threat of being fired looming overhead all summer, isn't fun.

I went there as a child and have great memories. After going to another camp and not having a great experience and the staff not caring I came to Lokanda and the staff made sure I had an amazing time. I will send my children to the camp.

I'm about to go to camp for my 10th and final summer at Lokanda. I couldn't have asked for a better camp with the most amazing friends! My best friends have become my sisters and Lokanda is really my second home! I live 10 months for one incredible summer! Playing sports and hanging out in the bunks when it's raining and competing in Olympics and Color War are why I have so many unforgettable memories! Uppers 05, SUPERS 06, AND ULTRAS 07: I love you with all of my heart! Red and Grey Always and Forever! As a former staff member, I would absolutely advise against sending your children to Lokanda. For the extravagant prices, the "cabins" are ramshackle shelters that are quickly painted and "maintained" directly before Visiting Day. No work was done on them except in the few days leading up to the one day a year the parents visited. There is graffitti on the walls from the 1950s. The beds are nailed pieces of wood with stained mattresses. The food is horrible and the kids often refuse to eat it, along with the staff. The "adults" motivate your childrens' counselors with threats of firing, not encouragement, and make examples frequently by letting people go for no reason. Many staff members quit before the summer ends. Also, since the salary ($1500 for 8 weeks of residential camp, 7:30am to 12:30am) is supplemented by a 'generous' $400 possible bonus, they dangle that as an incentive and punishment. Overall, it is not a wholesome place and I would never send my kids there.

camp lokanda is filled with great people. you make the most amazing friendships that will last a life time. I went to lokanda for six years and by the last summer, nothing at camp mattered to me nearly as much as my friends. its an excelent camp that is worth sending your children to.

We have been at this camp for a combined total of 17 years. My children think it is the best place on earth. My husband and myself have become very disenchanted with the "nickel and dime " aspect of the camp. After charging above the competitive rate for a camp they have the nerve to charge each camper $7 to recieve e-mail for the summer- come on why can't they include it in the price- once your children are entrenched in a camp it is very hard to get them to leave when the owners start pulling stuff like increasing the price $500 to $750 per season. On top of the tuition they charge for baggage delivery, canteen, "mini- camps" within camp and trips- the price of this camp has really gotten out of hand. Other camps bring the childrens trunks up on the bus, and they inclide canteen in the tuition- all for less than Lokanda is charging. I would think twice.
