Click to report rating    5/10/20   1     1     1     1     1   I went here for 3 summers and it was the worst experience of my entire life. The activities were horrible, I was mercilessly bullied, and the staff did not care at all. I still have nightmares about going back there over a decade later. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to go to this horrible camp. RID: 53204

Click to report rating    2/10/11   1     1     1     1     1   i was a staff member and i won't say when, but staff were asked to repair and keep up maintenance. i am not a plumber and am probably why you had cold water. we were severely underpaid and over stressed, many of us (not me) got fired for little more than a feeling from upper staff. this left us in constant fear of our jobs and little left to give to our campers. many promises were made about the programs and equipment the students could access that were total lies. the go-carts were in disrepair and actually sent staff to the hospital. that same staff was required to repair them or be sent home. the staff rarely got time off and as a result went way overboard at the bar on that one day of freedom. when it comes down to it the kids that like it, like the lack of supervision. it is dirty, unsafe, and poorly managed.  8/2/10   5     5     5     5     5   NSP was honestly the BEST and most formative summers of my life- nothing can or will ever compare. I went for almost a decade, and I can say that my best friends of my life are from NSP. My camp friends will be my bridesmaids and my roommates after college, and my lifelong friends. Camp NSP is not the ritz, but if that's what you look for in a camp, then you shouldn't be going to camp anyway. WIth that said it is not "ghetto." There were never mouse droppings or safety hazards any of the 8 bunks I lived in, and compared to other camps inthe area (which we toured extensively during all of our bathroom breaks at camp intramural soccer games, NASHOPA was nicer.) Camp was about the people, your first kiss, getting dressed up for canteen (even if that meant scrunching your hair and wearing blue eyeliner),raids, aspiring to be the cool older girls, the 4th of July, trying to get in the vid yearbook, tea with Charlotte. If you're a true Nashopians, you know what I'm talking about.1042 RID: 33599

9/21/09   1     1     1     1     1   I send my daughter to this camp by my friend recomendation. Well, now I can see that it was a BIG mistake. My daughter spent 4 days in the camp instead of planned 3 weeks. Guess for how much? For $ 3,200.0.The reasons of such short stay were: awfull sanitary conditions of the bunk, and lack of activities. My daughter (14 years old!) called me from camp hiding her cell phone (campers are not allowed to call home!) and she was crying asking to pick her up from camp. After several calls we pulled her out of the camp. I tried to contact Doug Katz askng for 2 weeks reimbursement. However, he just stoped answer my calls and did not return any portion of money paid. We all hoped for wonderfull time my daughter will spend in the camp NASHOPA but her stay there was a nightmare... I just don't know how Doug Katz feels by posessing our money... RID: 31061

8/3/09   3     1     2     2     1   I'm seriously thinking of calling the Board of Health for a surprise inspection - I have never seen such filthy cabins in my life. Mouse droppings in the cabins, dirts everywhere. To be clear: my kid is not with the 'regular' campers - he's there for a specific sport, and I'm not sure if the athletes have been given "worse" cabins than the other kids. But . . . the food is only partially cooked (for goodness sake, how hard is it to thaw frozen vegetables?!), and more than once there has not been enough to go around (my kid is pretty thin, and should be able to have dinner)!!!! Of the owners read this, I'm putting you on notice, bc my kid's still at camp (one left early, it was so disgusting): we're a family of lawyers - you better clean up your act - soon!!!! RID: 30622

7/21/09   5     4     5     5     5   My daughter has been a camper at NaShoPa for the past 5 summers. There is no where else on earth that gives the warm welcome and close friendships that truly ARE camp. If you are looking for the Four Seasons - keep searching. What you'll find at this camp are counselors that encourage kids to become involved in all activities, kids that greet each other with love and kindness, and owners that try to keep kids coming back year after year. They also have a fabulous circus program at the end of the summer which is incredible. Give this camp a look. RID: 30492

Click to report rating    12/3/08   5     4     4     5     5   I totally disagree with that review. My 4th grade daughter had her 1st summer last year, and loved it! She needed a little extra attention and got it 10x over. What a warm loving staff! She met so many new friends, and loved the activities. She still has not stopped talking about the adventure course and horseback. I was a nervous new mom sending her to camp, but Doug and Laura made all of us feel like family. Na Sho Pa is EXACTLY what camp should be, filled with safe nurturing fun. She can not wait to go back, and her little brother can't wait to join her! RID: 27809
Click to report rating    11/19/08   5     5     5     5     5   CAMP NA-SHO-PA IS THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD! this will be 10th summer and i've made the best friends of my lives at nashopa. it's been my second home since i was 5 and i dont plan on changing that any time soon. the atmosphere is great, the activities are fun, the counselors are AMAZING, and you will make friendships for a lifetime RID: 27597
Click to report rating    11/4/08   5     1     3     1     1   Camp Nashopa is not fun. If any of the parents on this site have soft kids, please do not send them there. The kids there are mad disrespectful, and the counselors to. There was one kid in our bunk that everyone hated, and instead of sticking up for him, the counselors would join in the tortures that most kids (other than me and my close friends) participated in. Don't get me wrong, I loved my councellors like bros... and most kids in my bunk, but the kids older than us were straight up mean. They did somethings to me and my friends that I would love to share, but cannot do so cause of the rules of this website. Instead of getting mad at these kids, the councelors of the kids in the older bunk thought it was funny and did not really care. One night, all the counsellors left to go to a soccer game or some nonsense, and the older kids violated one of the kids in our bunk. What they did brought this guy and me, and we're both from THE HOOD, to tears. We cried because we wanted OUT. RID: 27305

Click to report rating    7/28/08   5     5     5     5     5   My two children had the best first year at Camp Na Sho Pa! They had the best experiences, met a lot of nice friends, tried most of the many activities offered and most of all, they want to go back next year! Granted no camp is perfect but based on what I saw and heard, I would highly recommend this camp to anyone! AAAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++++ RID: 25187

Click to report rating    3/2/08   5     5     5     5     5   It was my third summer at NaShoPa and it was awesome! We love Doug and Laura AND WE LOVE OUR COUNSELORS ESPECAILLY CHRIS!!!! The activities are great and we have the best friends at NaShoPa. We have a lot of special events which are fun to not have to do the regualar stuff everyday. And my sister and I really like the food, especially the Meatballs and Spagetti....Laura and Doug care what we think and they are bringing back the Canteen Tickets...YEAH! and adding more electives to which are the best. We did a lot of cool stuff at outdoor adventure last year, my favorite was the mineral mining, it was very cool. OK, that's it for now, but we love NaShoPa soooooo much and we want to say hello to all our friends and counslors, WE CANT WAIT FOR 2008 it's totally the best!!!! RID: 20878

2/17/08   2     1     1     1     2   I went to Camp Nashopa for 07 and 06. 06 I had many friends. The next year only one of my friends returned. A mean girl came, ruined our summers, and we all cried because of her. Anyway the camp cant control that. I have never been there when the camp was run by the old directors. Doug has bad temper and fired my favorite counselors. Everyone feared them. Laura Katz was just there. The camp said electives are frequent. We only had them 6 times a week. Food, not 2 bad. The first week I didnt have any friends though and roamed camp. I went to the nurse's office crying. That's how I spent electives. Head counselors were aware of this n did nothing. On college week we had to wear 1 color the whole week. We were all stressed about that. We had to play sports we didnt want to, awful. The Katz have no buisness running a camp. Half the camp is related to upper staff. I would never go here. Do yourself a favor, choose another camp other than nashopa. RID: 20381

1/23/08   5     5     5     5     5   I've been going to Nashopa for the past 13 years I was a camper and now a counselor, and it is really the most amazing place ever. Honestly I'v seen the camp when it was owned by the krolls and yeah it was crazy and insane and a ton of fun, but how long could that have really lasted, If doug had not taken over the camp would have really been shut down. Doug Katz is doing his best to bring camp nashopa up to the standards of most camps. The owner of the camp doesn't define your experience there. I've had the most amazing times there and I love that place with my life. Seeing familiar faces year after year is what makes it amazing and there are always amazing new people that come that you grow to love also. This place is the****. Everyone should get to experience what a great place camp nashopa is. RID: 19328

Click to report rating    12/27/07   3     2     4     3     1   Boy, this camp has gone down the drain in the last 3 years. I don't know where all of the money is going. This camp used to be run great until Doug took over. There's so little amount of kids that there were 4 bunks empty this summer. Someone has to do something if they want this camp to survive another summer. I wouldn't recomend this camp to you if you're looking for a top class camp, but if u don't mind mis-behaved counselors, mean upper staff and dirty bunks this camp is for you. On egood thing about this camp is that the memories last a lifetime and so do the friends that u make. RID: 18372
Click to report rating    12/26/07   5     5     5     5     5   As the parent of campers we love Na-Sho-Pa. It has a great program and it is clear that the senior staff and counselor staff truly love the children. We think camp is 99% about the staff you have and Na-Sho-Pa has a great staff. They have great adults who head up the major activities and a great counselor staff who supervise the kids all the time. Our children had a great time for many years. They made good friends and loved the program. Doug and Laura have been wonderful and are always available to us with any concerns or issues or just to let us know everything is going great. Our campers love the horseback the best, but also love that they can pick activities each day as well. I'm always confortable that they are safe, happy and having fun. We highly recommend this camp.      11/5/07   1     1     3     2     1   ive been going to this camp for seven years, and wow. every since doug katz took over, theres legit 100 kids, most of them are related to upper stafff. it's really sad how he's ruining this camp. he's a patho, he makes promises to the campers, and never follows through. he always says yes just to shut everyone up, but it never works. we didnt go on any extra trips like the kroll's used to take us on; no bowling, no skating, no blueberry mountain. this past summer, noone got what they paid for. he's changed everything at this camp and its definitely not positive, canteen, activies, EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED. so doug, when you wonder whyyy theres 10 kids at the camp, thank yourself.. because it is your fault. the kroll's ran this camp and they did such an amazing job. they actually cared about their campers, and not just their $$$$$$$$.thats the difference between doug and the kroll's. love you krolls. ive made the best friends there, but camp has changed.. for the worse. Click to report rating    8/21/07   5     5     5     5     5   This summer was my daughters first time going to sleep away camp and she absolutley loved it. The campus was clean and beautiful, the staff were caring and attentitive and there was a wide range of exciting activities for my daughter to participate in. My daughter can't wait to return to Nashopa next summer, I reccomend this camp to all! RID: 14294
Click to report rating    8/18/07   4     4     5     3     4   the previous year was my 6th year, as you can tell everyone liked camp better when the krolls directed the camp, they still own it though, billy the acting instructer quit and everyone knows why, i didnt have my best years with the katz, doug this year deleted all pictures on my digital camera because of something that happend during camp, but there was only 1 picture he needed to delete. the rest were from trips the camp took, talking about trips the 4 weekers at the end didnt get to go to the mall or water skiing atleast 2 times for the water skiing but we should have been able to go to the mall once.the councelors their were great but upper staff wasnt so nice, the facilities were clean and fine, i got no attention what so ever, i just wanted to say that i am addicted to this camp and WILL come bake next year I LUVE U ALL CuNeXtYear RID: 14133
Click to report rating    8/1/07   5     2     2     2     2   i have gone to this camp for 5 year 2 of which under the krolls and the rest under doug katz. the camp used to be a great place for kids to not do anyhting and hang out, but after doug came in he pushed for more form to the schedule and every1 that has gone to this camp in the past loved it as a place to meet new people and play sports if u wanted to but he has just pushed out all of the old campers but the younger campers luv it probably because they never knew it before doug took over. this year only 200 kids came my first year there was well over 500 so they need to fix this problem RID: 13496
Click to report rating    7/11/07   1     1     1     1     1   The food is terrible...You are not allowed to seconds in the dinning room or the chef will yell at you.The program director Jamie is a real B*@%$.Camp was much better when the Kroll's ran it. RID: 12910
Click to report rating    7/4/07   5     4     4     5     5   The smiles from my kids says it all. They are having the time of their lives. In the three years that the Katz's have been running NaShoPa, this is their best summer yet!The camp looks great, there are a wide range of fun activities, and everyone loves the food!My daughters have the most loving and caring counselors that I have ever seen. They never fail to make sure that all of their campers feel good in whatever they are doing. The specialty counselors(arts and crafts, jewelery making, outdoor adventure, cooking) all come up with creative and interesting projects for the kids to do.The camp is clean, there is alot of spirit and cheering from the campers, and the kids are all working together as one camp unit. I am looking forward to seeing what fun lies ahead for NaShoPa in this, its 70th summer! Keep up the good work Doug and Laura!!! RID: 12698
Click to report rating    5/23/07   2     2     2     2     2   Honestly, how could anyone rate this camp above mediocre? Obviously, this camp WAS superb... Now that the Katz's run the camp it's become an actual hell hole. Not only is the upper staff full of hypocrits but the directors are clueless. The Katz's should get their mind off of making their counselors and staff mesirable and focus on what's really the issue at this camp...and that is the fact that the directors don't know the key ingredients are for a fun summer for everyone. The Katz's believe that harsh rumors about Na-Sho-Pa cause people to shy away from it but they're wrong. It's the horrible directors and upper staff that causes people to never want Na-Sho-Pa to enter into their mind ever again. There is so much negative energy coming from this camp that it's a miracle that it's even still running. They're lucky if there are 200 campers this summer. But, that won't be a shock to them considering they lost 300 campers within one year. Take this into consideration. It's truthful. RID: 11076
Click to report rating    3/29/07   3     1     2     2     2   yea iv been there for 3 years and ever since Doug Katz became director the camp declined and nobody cared about anything and the experience was bad.      2/4/07   2     2     3     3     3   I was their for two summers and 4 weeks each summer. My first summer their I was 12 and really liked it. They had ATV's(all terrain vehicles) and also riflery which was my favorite thing. I was on the baseball team even though it was really bad but I had alot of fun. However, my second summer after the new owners took over (Doug Katz), I didn't like it. Riflery was gone, the ATV's were all broken and the counselors were horrible. Other than the few good counselors, many were irresponsible and didn't care. One of my counselors was actually fired because he came back drunk one night and was caught smoking weed. I didn't really feel safe because of the numerous fights that occured. One night a kid was knocked out and his friends went on an all night hunt for the person. As kids we also did alot of stupid things like locker boxing. I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone. RID: 7518
Click to report rating    1/26/07   5     3     3     4     3   This was my 10 year old's first experience at overnight camp (not counting girl scout camp on Long Island which she did not care for-accomodations too spartan). She thoroughly enjoyed her four week stay and made friends. I agree with many of the comments, the staff all seem really interested in the children, but the facilities could use an updating. However, I think it is more important that the kids have a nice nurturing environment versus state of the art equipment. You have all of that stuff in your home anyway. Give them a break from that stuff! RID: 7207
Click to report rating    1/12/07   5     2     3     3     2   I had some of the greatest times of my life let alone summers at camp nashopa. I have seen both ends of it all as a camper and as a counselor. The camp is clearly on its demise however the ineptitude of the ownership has in no way hindered (execot in quantity)the quality of counselors and campers that make NSP what it is. Other camos have far superior er facilities at other camps, better food and more to do but the relatiosnhips you make are long and the expereinces that any kid will have there were will be second to none in there lifetime if they go here. Time of my life no question. RID: 6711

Click to report rating    11/11/06   2     1     1     1     1   This camp has seen better days. It is definitely getting worse each year. The new directors have no idea how to run a camp. As one of the head counselors put it: "In a structured camp you have soccer at 10 AM and everyone plays soccer. Here you have a soccer elective and four kids show up." They have bad kids who return each year and ruin the experience for other campers. My son was teased by other kids when he tried to take part in sports and encouraged to "hang out" with them instead. He came home with terrible habits. Never again! RID: 4885
Click to report rating    8/1/06   1     1     1     1     1   I will never send my child back to this disgusting camp. At first meeting, the head staff seemed nice, but behind closed doors, my child claimed that they were rude and nasty to their counselors (which my child loved) as well as to some children. The owners would fire their staff and the drop of a dime for really dumb reasons. My child's counselor was fired and I recieved a phone call from her in tears. Children should not be crying at camp! The conditions in which the children live is unsanitary. Toilets overflow and their residue is left on the floor. There were hardly any campers at the camp. My child complained that if there was a sports team going to play another camp, campers would be forced to play the sport even if they did not want to. My child was forced to play softball for a whole afternoon on one of the hottest days of the summer. That is absolutely absurd. The only thing my child liked about this camp, was all of the friendships she had made. She hated the camp itself. RID: 1723
Click to report rating    8/1/06   5     3     2     2     2   The camp was great when the Krolls ran it. But now, the Katz's run it and it is anything but great.
