Click to report rating    7/7/17   3     4     3     3     2   If you are not from New York and if you don't really have much filmmaking experience then SOCAPA may well be worth the time and money. But for my son, who has taken filmmaking twice in his high school, it was a disappointment. The equipment quality is only marginally better than what his NYC public school offers and there were serious technical problems on his first shoot and the school did not have enough backup equipment. Additionally, while the film instructor was thoughtful and insightful, the one who taught how to use the equipment was not. And the quality of the other students was lackluster, meaning the discussions weren't great and the actors ranged from mediocre (and lacking any subtlety) down to awful and disinterested. The evening activities were probably great for visiting students but not really appealing for a local (though we pay for it) and day students were not informed of last minute schedule changes so there was also a fair amount of wasted time. Click to report rating    3/17/16   5     4     5     5     5   This place is amazing. My entire floor was foreign. I still keep in contact with co-stars and photographers from Turkey, Israel, all over the place. Our RA ordered us pizza and baked us brownies on the final night. Our Acting Instructor was such a funny guy who made the class welcoming. There's a LOT of freedom here, too, which is great. Times Square, Brooklyn Market, concerts, or even hanging around campus is a fun time. It's safe, too. Life on the subway, and night life, at SOCAPA is practically perfect as long as you're not an idiot. The Cafeteria Food is mediocre at best, but you get by, especially with the food joints on campus and weekly Duane Read runs. The studios are a little cramped, but the dorms are in pretty good shape. Good showers, big bathrooms, lots of storage. It may be prone to flooding, but that was more a joke than it was a real problem. Love this place. Can't wait to go next year. RID: 49481
Click to report rating    8/24/15   5     4     5     5     5   I attended a 3 week digital and dark room photography class at the NYC campus. It was one of the best times of my life! I really enjoyed the whole experience and made a ton of really great friends from all over the world. Also I learned a lot. I defiantly sending you child to SOCAPA. My RA was also amazing! She was super nice and a lot of fun to be around. RID: 49126
Click to report rating    1/5/15   1     4     3     2     2   I attended the 3week dance camp and it was such a waste of time. There are very few advanced dancers, and the levels are not accurately split. The teachers are very unprofessional towards students as they believe that they are always right and they look down upon the students. Their attitude and the way they talk to students is rude+unacceptable. Teachers play clear favorites, allowing return campers to always be front and center+get whatever they want. If you're not the #1 dancer, forget about getting attention. Almost all the girls come with friends and are rather cliquey, so if you are planning to attend this camp, come with a friend. There are a few "master classes" throughout the session, but the master class teachers are just random dance teachers. Considering this camp is located in LA and NYC you would think they could hire some well-known, famous, working dancers. There is a lot of free time and freedom to do whatever and go wherever you want, which was the only positive side. RID: 48257
Click to report rating    12/5/12   5     5     5     5     5   I did the dance 2 week program in New York City and it was the best 2 weeks of my life. Not only was the dancing intense and amazing but the other activities that the whole camp did together were so much fun! I met a ton of people from all over the world that were such a pleasure to meet, the dance studio was beautiful, our hang out room had several mac's and a television, and all the staff were super cool and helpful. They're not very strict with going out into the city after class's and that was great, plus the lunch and dinner provided to us was always good. I definitely recommend this program!!! Truly best experience ever! RID: 43166
Click to report rating    5/14/12   5     5     5     5     5   This program was unbelievable. Great people from all over the world. Super creative environment. The campus is right in the center of the village - basically at NYU. I was very nervous to go but ended up absolutely loving it! RID: 41044
Click to report rating    4/14/12   4     5     4     4     3   My daughter went to SOCAPA film camp in LA (Occidental College) last summer and had a blast. Occidental college was a great location to house the students and offered a good location for filming. Her dorm room was spacious and had a nice view of the campus. There were acting students in the same dorm so it made searching for actors for her short films easy and beneficial to both. They spent most days attending classes and working on their projects, and they had some fun activities planned for the evenings, including going to the red carpet of a big premiere at the Chinese Theatre. They had a Hollywood Director and Producer come to speak to them. When she came home after two weeks, she had met other people interested in film, she had created two short films that she put on YouTube, and she had learned practical techniques and vocabulary that now help her in film school. The only complaint she had was not having more transportation available during their free time. RID: 40777
Click to report rating    9/11/11   1     2     2     1     1   My daughter went here for the 3 week dance camp. When I initially spoke to them they said it was for advanced dancers. They were well aware of my daughter's experience as a dancer. It turned out that she was one of the better dancers there with most of the girl's having little or no experience as a dancer. I have no idea why someone would go to a camp that cost's almost $5000 not including travel expenses and food for weekends, etc that is not an above average dancer. Regardless, when I called the camp after the first day they informed me that Los Angeles did not have an advanced level. I was never informed of this until that moment. I specifically told them that I wanted her in the advanced level from the beginning. The camp was poorly organized, the teachers were not the one's promised on the website, my daughter was taken off campus without my knowledge with someone I did not know, and I never spoke to one counselor, teacher, etc the whole time she was there or after. Click to report rating    8/21/10   5     5     5     5     4   My son attends another all-around camp during the summers but he loves film-making and attended SOCAPA this summer for 2 weeks in Vermont. With an extremely knowledgable staff and a beautiful setting, he had his first intensive arts experience and made 50 new friends! The facilities and equipment were top-knotch. I would highly recommend this program for those who are serious about the arts. Not cheap but worth it. RID: 33808
Click to report rating    11/12/07   3     5     5     4     5   I love socapa and can't wait to go back this summer. The staff could have been more organized but the dance program is fabulous! RID: 17017
Click to report rating    8/21/07   4     4     5     4     4   This camp truly let me do what I love all day long for three weeks! I learned so much, made loads of friends while getting a taste of the big city. However, the staff isn't that organized or helpful. RID: 14303
Click to report rating    5/10/07   5     5     5     5     5   I've never been much of a joiner (and never really liked camp) but SOCAPA allowed me to do what I loved all day everyday while being in NYC. I'm going to college now and I can't believe I'm not going this summer. =( RID: 10695
