3/2/09   4     4     4     4     4   My dad worked on Senior Staff at Onway for years as a kid. Though he held a strong opposition for the selling of his camp, he has never expressed any ill-feelings on behalf of Wah-Tut-Ca. If you plan to degrade WTCSR, at least back up your comments with ligitimate, factual examples besides just complaining about WTC. Hating Wah-Tut-Ca and choosing to outsource your camping experiences will NEVER prove your love or respect for C.O. Camp Wah-Tut-Ca has some flaws so it is unreasonable to rate it as a perfect camp, however..it is a great camp and saying that it is anything less is unreasonable and unfair to the camp. What was done has been done and it is time to move on. If Onway had been my home, I'm positive that this would be harder to say but: they are only camps and all of these ill feelings will only tear our council to shreds until scouting eventually dies out, and all of our spirits die with it.  2/21/09   5     5     5     5     5   After reading the other reviews in this forum, it is clear to me that there is a great divide between good and poor reviews, with no true median. I feel as if those who poorly review this camp do not truly know what Wah Tut Ca, and furthermore, the Wah Tut Ca spirit are. Unless serving as a staff member, or as a youth participant, there is truly no way to understand and appreciate what Wah Tut Ca has to offer. More than a camp, it is an experience and brotherhood that truly cannot be expressed in words. Concerning the physical and program status of the camp, the staff of almost 70 in its 73rd year is able to provide a meaningful and worthwhile program for more than 1000 scouts and campers each year. As a maverick of open program, Wah Tut Ca has refined its scouting program to allow scouts to manage their own time throughout the various areas of the camp. The buildings are built to suit the amount of scouts in camp, and the variously donated tools give WTC a modern take on scouting. RID: 29077

2/7/09   4     4     5     5     5   Wah-tut-ca is an excellent boy scout camp. The buildings are rustic looking, but well-maintained by an all-volunteer staff. The food has improved dramatically over the last two Summers, the brand new kitchen (and staff) helped, everyones tastes are however, different. Some of the maintenance issues were due to a do-nothing-when-no-one's-looking ranger that left camp recently. He's been replaced by a competent, caring scouter that will make people realize what little the last ranger did. The complaints on the waterfront are not justified. It's safe with buddy checks every 10 minutes or so, but it is NOT a beach, it is a boating and swimming area. There is a brand new boathouse at the site. As to staff, some of their personalities don't always mesh with every kid. But, every one of them does work their butt off every minute they are in camp! This camp routinely gets a perfect/near-perfect score on it's national inspection, and there is a darn-good reason for it. RID: 28888
Click to report rating    1/1/09   5     5     5     5     5   Great camp, Great program, The open program is one of the best there is. For all thouse who knock it, Ill put it this way open program is what the REAL WORLD is like, it teaches kids to manage time, life dosen't come with a schedual after college. the staff is awsome. I was against the tree cutting at first, but they need to do it, the only trees that are going are the ones that are in very bad shape. Think if they left them and there was anther micro burst, or ice storm how much damage the unhealty trees could of done. All in all the camp is great and the best ever RID: 28249
Click to report rating    12/3/08   4     5     5     4     4   To all who believe that the camp staff is lazy and or unprepared I hope that this statement does not agitate you, but you are ignorant. I challenge you to spend a year on camp staff at Wah-Tut-Ca. I challenge you to go without sleep, work tirelessly, and be criticized instead of rewarded. I challenge you to train with the staff, and dive out the lake and to sprint across camp during our drills. Nothing is more physically demanding, mentally challenging or more testing of ones morals than working on this camps staff. The only reason that this staff returns year after year, it because the spirit of camp Wah-Tut-Ca keeps them coming back. Anyone who discourages any of them knows nothing of this camp or what it stands for and should really not be offering their opinions. If your negative opinions are a result from a negative experience, then you need to grow up and realize that it’s a camp, not a Holiday Inn. *And for anyone who says the food at Wah-Tut-Ca is dissatisfactory, let’s see h RID: 27822
Click to report rating    8/5/08   5     5     5     4     5   It seems like everyone either loves or s this camp. Personally, I love it. The open program can be a great or terrible thing, depending on what kind of person you are. I consider myself to be fairly organized and ambitious - in one week at camp I earned 17 merit badges! But it's not all about the badges. The staff is great (they love working there - you can tell) and the facilities are acceptable. Activities are awesome, especially at the waterfront. Being a scout camp, it's dirt cheap. Oh and the food is terrible (like i said... it's a scout camp). But being able to go wherever you want, whenever you want makes this camp amazing, and I question anyone who thinks differently. RID: 25467
Click to report rating    6/17/08   1     1     1     1     1   The open program at Wah-Tut-Ca did not provide a very positive experience for me and my troop. The camp lay-out was confusing and made it hard for scouts to get around from area to area. The open program resulted in many scouts earning very few merit badges. In my experience, open program does not work. The only way scouts are able to reach thier full potential at camp is under a closed program or a hybrid open-closed program such as that of Camp Onway. In addition to the program, the facilities were dismal and could definitely use repair. The staff is either too young or too old and is often lazy when it comes to merit badges. There are many other camps out of council that have much better facilities, much better program, and much better staff members. I would not recommend this camp. RID: 23955
Click to report rating    6/16/08   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Wah-Tut-Ca is the greatest scout camp in America for two reasons. First, the staff work without end to bring enthusiastic program to the campers. Their commitment and love of the camp is evident. Secondly, Camp Wah-Tut-Ca has a long and spirted history, as seen in the book recently published by Arcadia Press. The activities of the Order of the Arrow and the Key Foundation have ensured that the camp's "Welcome Home" sign rings as true now as it did in 1937. RID: 23891
Click to report rating    6/4/08   5     5     5     5     5   I have been attending WTC for 9 years and have 2 years experience working on staff. Call me biased and ignorant, but i feel that if you have anything bad to say about wah-tut-ca you probably did something wrong to make it that way. WTC is a camp of honor, tradition, and A+ scouting. All staff members are fully trained and prepared. Some equipment may be old, but are still well maintained. Open program is the only way you can run a camp, closed program is boring and unpersonalized. The only reason many new troops feel, "ignored", is because they tend not to make any effort to adapted to open program and maintain an introverted attitude. Come to WTC for a summer and you wont be dissapointed RID: 23565

4/15/08   5     5     5     4     5   I absolutely love this camp. The open program allows scouts a feeling of ownership unlike anywhere else. The staff is knowlegeable and acomidating. There are flush toilets all over camp, and the buildings are rustic enough that it still feels like a camp. Great experience for the summer. RID: 22306
Click to report rating    3/9/08   5     1     3     2     1   The staff is great, they want to work there and probably want to live there, but other then that the camp isn't up to par as other camps I have attended. I became severely ill with food poisoning while there, and after finally becoming better I did not find the camp as attentive to me because of it's large size. The activities were fun but the equipment, and the value of it, was not as good. RID: 21110
Click to report rating    3/3/08   5     5     5     5     5   I have nothing but good things to say about Wah-tut-ca. I can honestly say it is one of the greatest places on earth. It has changed my life. I have grown as a person, made lifetime friends and got to learn great leadership skills I will use the rest of my life. I truely believe the staff work to their utmost potential to accomidate every camper that comes through the gate. The camp's open program is wonderful. It teaches scouts to manage their own time and schedule and decide what they want to do, when they want to do it. This camp will live on forever because of the decidation of its staff and alumni who put their heart and soul into it. RID: 20900
Click to report rating    2/25/08   5     4     5     5     5   Wah Tut Ca is a place you go when you want to be a Scout & camp. It is not a hotel, it is not a spa, it is a Camp. The campers learn the spirit of thier brotherhood, they learn to love the BSA, & they learn to create a family for themselves that they may not have had otherwise. This camp is not defined by its facilities. It is defined by the Spirit & commitment that it breeds in the young men that participate. Could it use some updates, probably, but no amount of updating is going to change the amazing feeling that you get when you drive down its bumpy but serene roads. This camp has survived not because of funding or perfect facilities, but because of the brothers & sisters who came home to camp to give back to it what it has given to them. What better gauge of a camp is there then the caliber of the alumni it creates. Wah Tut Ca creates proud, dedicated, committed, strong & caring souls. I am proud that it welcomed me for so many years. I am proud to be one of its success stories! RID: 20666
Click to report rating    2/24/08   5     5     5     5     5   Everything that I have become in my life is due to the summers I spent at Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation. Seriously. Immersed in a group of talented and varied peers, I grew the confidence and skills to get to where I am today. RID: 20652

2/18/08   1     2     1     1     2   Firstly, to the young man 2 posts below me, you are not representing your camp, nor the BSA is a very good manner. I pray you did not receive the rank of Eagle. Next, the Camp is in general disrepair, even prior to the storm. The council gives the camp no money. The staff is all either 12, or 70. The director is kind, but has character flaws. The food is terrible. The trucks have been there since 99 when I last went to WTC, and probably much before. The open program is terrible, confusing, and a general bad system, leaving the staff unnacountable for anything and generaly lazy or unattentive. The camp is poorly laid out, and generaly confusing, and the waterfront is busy with motorboats, and has no real shorline. The docks are old, and in my opinion dangerous. Overall, I would say that this camp is underfunded, and un-cared for. Its staff is immature, and I would not trust them to look after a potato. It will probably be sold to the LDS within 10 years. I would not recomend this camp. RID: 20420
Click to report rating    2/18/08   1     1     1     1     1   Here's to a camp that just cut down tons of trees, is home to one of the worst road systems ever, and part of one of the most ignorant Boy Scout councils in the United States of America. Daniel Webster and Mohegan Councils > YCC RID: 20419
Click to report rating    2/1/08   5     5     5     5     5   I love this camp!!! My favorite part is the enthusiasm of the staff, they're always smiling and will bend over backwards for anyone. RID: 19709
Click to report rating    1/29/08   5     5     5     5     5   I am extremely proud to have been a part of this camp as a camper and staff...the staff is well trained and very attentive...the facilities may be aged but are filled with tradition and history (some buildings were built by WTC's founders and still stand today over 70 years later)..the activities at WTC are developed by young enthusiastic program staff and new ideas are always being developed to keep the program fun and interesting for every camper and even some who stay several weeks in the same summer...the value of the experience at WTC is worth every hard earned penny because for many kids who attend AND work at WTC their time there is their time at home...you will never find a camp with a staff more committed to keeping the sacred traditions of a camp than the staff at Wah-Tut-Ca...FOR FRIENDS AND BROTHERS!  1/29/08   5     5     5     5     5   I grew up at this camp, worked at this camp, volunteer at this camp, and now I'm going as my son's Scoutmaster at this camp. This camp is a very special place if it can take a boy of 11 years old and have him coming back for the rest of his life. It's even more magical for that same 11 year old boy to be able to watch his own son grow up in the same camp and enjoy it as much as he did. Over the years I've seen staff come and going as they move on with life, but WTC always has the same magic and wonder. Buildings fall and get rebuilt but it always feels like home. Over the years there have been many changes but it's always for the better. This camp just keeps getting better with age!! For a Boy Scout this camp has what they want and need from a camp. If you can do it within the scouting program you can do it here. This is simply the BEST CAMP ON EARTH!!! RID: 19563
Click to report rating    1/26/08   5     5     5     5     5   Wah-Tut-Ca is the only Boy Scout Camp like it. They offer an open program which in lamens terms means that you can pretty much do whatever you want, whenever you want to. The staff is very accomidating to requests. They have a spirit that is unparalleled by most other camps. The facilities are traditional, and help remind you that you are at a camp, not school or an airport. The food has been extremely good the past couple of years. There is something about this place that is special. It is the only camp that I have ever gone to that, upon entering the gates, welcomes you home. RID: 19422
Click to report rating    1/23/08   5     5     5     5     5   Awesome place, runs an open program so the kids can do what they want when they want. The staff is willing to bend over backwards to help the campers out, and will try their hardest to help the campers succeed. The staff is also very energetic and go all out, you never know what they will do next, from random songfest in the dinning hall, to auctioning themselves off for an hour of service, or even human bowling. RID: 19352
Click to report rating    6/22/07   1     4     5     4     4   The camp was really good. I was staying there for a summer camp with the boy scouts but a microburst hit. The staff went estactic and panicked. RID: 12338
