Click to report rating    2/11/19   5     5     5     5     5   We have attended this summer camp 3-4 years (son and daughter). I find the environment excellent for independent thinking and good group feeling; though my kids had the occasional bad social encounter, Dr. George and his instructors were good at intervening and re-setting the partners and groups. The value of the camp is excellent compared to other "brain" and "STEM" camps -- strong instruction and guided hands-on work. Dr. George keeps parents updated with Facebook and Youtube videos; the Friday exhibition is always fun. Finally, the rock climbing is a great complement to the program's activities -- my kids aren't especially athletic, but felt they could learn how to climb, work at it a bit, but not be overwhelmed by it. The camp is held at an AA public school -- Honeycreek. Functional, modular structures; they run around on the campus for breaks doing guided games that my kids love. RID: 52463
Click to report rating    6/26/12   4     3     5     5     4   My 7 year old son had a fantastic time, after he got over his initial reservation, in the full day Lego Robots & Engineering camp. He was anxious to go every morning and especially sad on Friday. George and the teachers were very hands on with t he students and had very good communication with us during the week (thumbs up/down on the day) as well as several communications through email. If we can afford it, I am sure he will be attending the sumo robots camp next summer.... RID: 41452
Click to report rating    7/21/11   1     1     1     1     1   My child had a horrible time at this camp. The staff were difficult to deal with and we had trouble getting in touch with the owner. It is expensive and not worth the price. RID: 36461
Click to report rating    3/13/11   3     2     2     1     1   The owner was terrible with my child. He was not very attentive to the students in the class and always seemed to be at his computer and not interacting with the students. RID: 35345

Click to report rating    8/18/07   5     4     5     5     4   My son loved this camp! If your kids love to take apart and build things the junkbot class is a great choice. My younger son took the junkbot class and he learned a lot about electric circuits. In theory you could use the junk they took apart to build the robot, but there is so much variation in the parts, and they can't guarantee that the parts they took out would even work. It would be hard to get enough working parts for every camper So instead, they use parts that are guaranteed to work. Through out the week they use the junk that the campers have taken apart to identify electrical components. The camp saves all the junk to be recycled at the end of the week. When they build their junkbot the camp uses pre-made PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) that George Albercook and some of his more advanced students designed. The outdoor activities are also great. Over all I am very happy with this camp and my son can not wait to come back next year to do the Lego NXT. RID: 14127
Click to report rating    8/16/07   3     2     1     1     1   The previous review is actually much too kind. The "Junkbots" camp described on the website involves taking apart old VCRs, tape recorders, etc. and use the components to build a working robot. Once the kids had taken everything apart, it was thrown in the trash! Imagine the disappointment. What they actually got to do was build a little robot from a kit. Sitting in the Salvation Army basement all day also leaves much to be desired. Playing "sock tag" time after time doesn't cut it. This camp is a terrible value for the money. Look into other camps, because even though this may sound great, it's false advertising. RID: 14045
Click to report rating    7/15/07   5     3     5     4     4   Combines 20 hrs of robotics with 20 hrs of rock climbing (Planet Rock), high ropes (at UM), and orienteering (on Peach Mountain). The robotics involves building a flutterbot and programming it in C. In prior years the camp was 1/2-day robotics and 1/2-day outdoor/physical activity. To save money this year, they went to 3 full days of robotics and 2 full days of outdoor activities. Sitting in the basement of the Salvation Army for almost 8 hours straight for 3 full days is way too much. Before signing up for this I would make sure that they have decided to go back to the old system. This camp is for older kids -- 6th grade plus -- and a younger camp builds lego robots. The camp head does home-schooling during the year and is prone to lecturing about the virtues of cooperation and various other character-building initiatives. Make sure your child leaves any sarcastic tendencies (as well as any desire to write independent computer code that isn't in the camp head's book) at home. RID: 12976
