She does admit there was no false advertising - as they have noted, it truly is not a camp. Sometimes my wife wakes up in the night screaming. Usually it is not because of this camp. But not always. "Overheated, bleeding, terrified, I felt like I was going to die on the creek walk" - if your kid needs help suppressing memories than this is the camp for you. RID: 53254
Click to report rating    5/3/19   1     1     1     1     1   I was a 'counselor' at this camp for many years in the 90's. However, we were supposed to say we were 'family' and lie when asked how we were related. On the camper side, it seemed to be a fulfilling experience for the kids. If you are worried about the overall holistic nature of how things are run , I would steer clear of these people. Campers and staff are used as slave labor fulfilling the needs of the family first. Campers are belittled as are staff. Everyone is looked at as a dollar sign: Rich campers are noted and treated much better than less rich. When I was working there a senator's daughter was a camper and was treated a lot better than all the others. I have a lot more to say about my experience but I urge everyone to look for another place for their children to go. RID: 52601
Click to report rating    8/27/18   1     1     1     1     1   I attended this camp in the 90's. I can't believe it's still in operation. My cousin and I had such an awful time there that we contemplated what we could do to get sent home early. The family (especially the counselors) seemed miserable and were unnessecarily mean and unsympathetic to the homesick children (some of them several years younger than I). They also had cell phones and cars and were not Amish-but that's obvious to everyone, right? Anyway, I wouldn't send my dog to this camp. (Speaking of dogs, we were forced to carry 10 gallon buckets of water down long dirt roads to water their sled dogs who were shamelessly kept on short chains). What that has to do with the Amish lifestyle I still have no idea. Send your kids to a camp with a real nature experience, sports camp, horse riding camp, or Boy Scout/Girl Scout Camp. -All of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Spare them the trauma of spending a week with these posers. RID: 52220
Click to report rating    5/20/18   5     5     5     5     5   The most amazing camp I've ever been to! There was a lot of free time, and the kids are given a lot of liberty as to what they choose to do. Even though there is a lot of free time, there are also chores and projects that teach children what the farm life is like. The food is delicious and nutritious, while representing the Amish culture that dominates that area. There are lots of fun animals to play with, and the camp is farm-centered. You are reminded to focus on the tasks at hand, and since the Barkers do not tell you the time, the days seem to last longer. Roughly 70 percent of the day is free time, and during that free time, there are many activities to spend your time doing. The activities also reflect Amish culture. The attire (long pants, t-shirt) is very smart, so that you don't get scratched or bit. I LOVED the opportunity to, if you wake up early, normally 5 or 6 am, then you can try and get into the barn before Richard, so you can milk the very friendly goats. I loved it!! RID: 51836

8/23/15   5     5     5     5     5   Loved the animals, doing the chores, good food and loved all the freedom to explore. When we asked our 10 year old daughter if she missed home she said by Tuesday she didn't even think about home, the Farm was home. She absolutely loved it all and can't wait to go back! RID: 49119

8/17/15   5     5     5     5     5   My 11 year old son went to this camp the week of 10-14 August 2015. He was originally skeptical that he would enjoy such a place. However, the open house in May, as well as several questions we had answered by the Barkers via email really put his mind at ease. When I went to pick him up, he did not want to leave. He absolutely loved the atmosphere - being able to care for the animals, having the free time to make his own personal memories of the farm, the creek walk, playing in the hay, etc. While I will acknowledge the camp is pricey, it's a cost I'd happily pay again, as my son would love to go back. I've read on this board some complaints about a few of the rules in place. My son really felt these were in place for the best interest of all children, to ensure a positive, in the moment experience for all. One thing that will always stick with me that my son said about this camp - he said the Barkers wanted this to feel like home while the kids were there, and my son said it sure did. RID: 49082

8/16/15   5     5     5     5     5   My 11 year old daughter has spent a week at the farm each of the past 3 summers, and she can't wait to get back there again next summer. She loves the animals, the staff, the food and the atmosphere. She went to girl scout camp with friends from school this summer too, but said she wants to trade that for a second week at the farm next year. I like the independence and positive attitude she brings home with her. It's such a special place we drive her all the way there from Washington, DC, about a 7 hour drive each way. RID: 49080

8/16/15   5     5     5     5     5   The most amazing experience for children. Neither of our daughters has stopped talking about the farm (or the Barkers) since returning home). The lessons learned and experiences had are priceless! My sister and I attended in the 70's/80's and the farm remains a truly spectacular adventure today. Thoroughly enjoyable and children leave with a better sense of who they are and of what they are capable. The Barker family is beyond wonderful! RID: 49076

8/15/15   5     5     5     5     4   Our daughter loved this camp! She enjoyed the dorm living, all of the various activities she participated in and described positive interactions with the Country Farm staff. She is by nature a very caring person who loves animals, the outdoors, and people. She fully enjoyed the freedom to explore the outdoors and the engagement with the animals. She had a hard time with the "people" rules regarding not being able to discuss her age, her family and her home life. This is a Montessori child but this type of divisiveness is not common to Maria Montessori's teachings. Not being able to share yourself fully with people with whom you are living is difficult. To have memories of your life and no one with whom to remember them is almost a punishment. In every experience in life we can find ways to improve and this would be one I would like the Farm to explore. This was an expensive camp and now, not one I think I would pay for again. RID: 49071

7/28/15   4     5     5     4     3   My daughter loved The Country School Farm Camp and smiles whenever she talks about it. This camp is great for kids like her who are interested in farming and work well independently. There is a lot of (mostly unsupervised) free time which she loved. However, I won't be sending her back. The camp is just too expensive for only 5 days - especially since they were eating hotdogs and not harvesting fresh produce from a garden to eat. The rules prevent campers from making friends. They are not to talk much about their life back home and are forbidden from memorizing to exchange info (pens/papers/journals aren't allowed). I get that it might hurt others' feelings if they aren't asked, but it robs the kids of the ability to truly make new friends and then look forward to seeing them again the following year. That bothered my daughter. Third, there are no horses or cows on the farm and my daughter really wants more interaction with large farm animals. Hopefully we will find something else. RID: 48949

7/12/15   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter's experience was amazing. The Barker's are the perfect people to run this wonderful camp. She bonded with them and enjoyed her time with the other kids, too. The chance to unplug was a wonderful opportunity. The kittens, the goats, and the creekwalk are some of her fondest memories. And I echo what others have said: my picky eater did not starve! High marks for Penny's granola and bread. On a scale of 1 to 10, this camp is an 11!! Or maybe even a 12. Very highly recommended.  6/28/15   5     5     5     5     5   I grew up on a farm and when my daughter showed an interest in farm life and animals, I looked for the perfect place for her first overnight camping experience. She was 7 and The Farm was ideal. I definitely recommend going to the open house. It will give you as parents piece of mind (worked for my husband who was concerned at first). This was my daughter's 3rd year at the farm and she loves it like the very first visit. While a picky eater, she LOVES the farm food! Each May I ask her if she wants to make the long drive to the farm for the open house. Although she is not one to enjoy long car rides, she will gladly endure 8 hours of travel to get another 4 priceless hours on the farm. She loves the animals and the simplicity of farm life as I remember it as a child ... eating blackberries right from the bushes, seeing a chicken lay an egg, holding newborn kittens, milking the goats, etc. The farm has become part of her and she is part of the farm. Thank you, Barkers! RID: 48788

6/28/15   5     5     5     5     5   We have sent our daughter here for four years, since she was 7 years. Run for 39 years by montessori-trained teachers, the farm is less a camp than a working farm, operated as it was in the 19th century, where children work and grow. The days are structured, but within that structure, the children have "quite a lot of freedom, actually," as my daughter (10) says. They take care of animals (from goats down to ferrets and bunnies -- no big animals here), work the garden, do dishes, and explore, play and daydream. Children who don't like dirt, work, independence, being around new people won't do well here. Richard and Penny Barker, who run the camp, are wonderful and wise people, and the farm is their home, the campers their visitors. The farm is beautiful and simple; the campers run the farm - that is their activity for the week; one year my daughter got homesick and threw up - the Barkers kept us posted and it was fine; it has gotten more expensive, but still well worth the $$.  6/21/15   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter is 11 and loves animals. This year was the first time she had been away from home without us. Naturally, I was a little concerned. However, she said that she wanted to go back again when my husband and I picked her up. She told us all about the life on the farm. Her favorite chores were milking the goat and picking the egg from the hens. I am very impressed that they got her to like spaghetti and scrambled eggs, two foods she never liked previously. She told me the spaghetti was fresh made and the eggs were from the farm. I think this camp provided more than just fun. She came back a little more grown-up, listening better and helping more. I think the experience made her realize that a member of the family should contribute to make the family life better. I used to care for her, do things for and with her. Now, I know she is ready to extend her ability to go beyond my expectation of her. This is truly a great experience for my family! RID: 48762

3/5/15   5     5     5     5     5   Without fail, Barkers Country School Farm Camp consistently remains at the top of our daughters list. Like many years in the past, this June we will pack up, drive from our city life in Chicago and journey some 400 miles to her favorite place nestled in scenic Holmes County Ohio. This year will mark her sixth year of attending and she is hopeful to return again next year as a counselor. I suppose for some, the philosophy and activities of this camp may not suit every child. I for one support an environment where my child can disconnect from electronics and pop culture. If your child needs to be continually entertained, over stimulated by rigorous activities or has difficulty engaging in different experiences then I would imagine the idea of creek walks, farm tasks, the sounds of crickets, a sky full of stars, milking goats, playing outdoor games, preparing meals, indulging in Penny’s granola and Richard’s many folk tales is simply not the place to consider.  3/1/15   5     5     5     5     5   Both of our daughters have attended the Country School Farm for many years and it has been an amazing experience for both of them. Our oldest began when she was 6 years old and this year will be her 6th year attending. They talk positively about their experiences and look forward to attending all year long. The children are well-cared for and gain the invaluable experience of learning to live simply and calmly. The Barker's are a caring family and have many years of experience dealing with children and their needs while providing them an environment to explore and be self-sufficient. In today's world that is bombarded with technology, pressure, and a constant race for time, the farm offers the environment for a child to slow down and be a child.... RID: 48464

2/26/15   5     5     5     5     5   This is the best place imaginable if your child loves animals and dreams of beautiful country living. The simple farm life, detached from electronics and videos, isn't what my daughter thought she wanted to do at first. However, when we picked her up on Friday, the first thing she said was she wanted to come back again with a huge smile on her face. Once home she looked up our city ordinances on having goats in our backyard (Luckily it's forbidden so I don't have to be the bad guy) Our daughter enjoyed learning the simple parts of farm life, from taking care of the animals to helping with household chores. I’m grateful that some of that enthusiasm has stayed with her and she’s still more helpful now that she’s home. She’s getting ready to go back again this summer, already packing her bag. I love this place and by the way I spent many of my summers there back in the ‘70’s and 80’s. I saw it grow and evolve, yet maintain the close-knit family atmosphere where everyone is cherished.  2/14/15   1     1     1     1     1   Where should I start? A degrading and frightful experience for my daughter. The food was not farm food but snacks such as cheese and crackers. She had to wait in line naked wrapped in a towel for a 2 minute cold shower. She was restricted in what she could talk about to other campers. It was so stressful that she got shingles while there and I was not contacted about it!!!! They said it was a rash. it was full blown shingles RID: 48416

9/8/13   5     5     5     5     5   Our sons, ages 11 and 8, LOVED their 3-day farm experience and made memories we're sure will last a lifetime. Both boys are hoping to return and their younger sister is begging for a turn. Clearly, the Barkers have put carful thought into making the farm experience a meaningful and fun one. Maria Montessori would be impressed! RID: 45949

8/25/13   5     5     5     5     5   This was our daughters first experience with The Country School Farm. She has never been away from home more than a night at a time so I was a little nervous about leaving her for the week. It turns out, I had no reason to be, she had a blast!! During the 4.5 hour car ride home, she talked (nonstop) about the farm and how much she loved it and wanted to go back next year. Milking goats, collecting eggs, petting the bunnies, and walking the dogs were some of her favorite activies. She made new friends and stepped out of her comfort zone. She plans on living on a farm now when she grows up!! I'm so glad she had a chance to unplug and get back to basics this summer. I only wished we had heard about the farm sooner, as she is 11 and will only have one more year to attend. RID: 45844

8/19/13   5     5     5     5     4   This was my 11 year old daughter's 1st year, she was a bit nervous as I was, for her, as we dropped her off; Upon picking her up, all the way home and now into this week ALL she can do is talk about missing the Farm and the wonderful time she had. She explained how comfortable everyone made her feel, how the rules and structure supported that comfort, (so that no one ever felt excluded and how everyone 'became friends within seconds!') She really didn't have much farm experience but spoke about what she learned, how instruction was given and that mistakes were something to be corrected and learned from. My daughter swears the chores were fun and nothing ever felt like work!! Highlights for her were taking care of the pygmy goats and rabbits. She already looking forward to being invited back and attending next year! RID: 45764

8/19/13   5     5     5     5     5   We picked up our daughter from her first week at the Country School Farm several days ago, and (like others) she has been telling us about it ever since. She misses the farm already and tells me she thinks about it all the time. Every aspect of the day is well-structured and supports children in all they do there. I loved hearing about how she rose early to milk the goats and that she loved signing up for house chores so she could feed the pygmy goats! There was also time each day for the children to have time to themselves, which I know my daughter enjoyed. She shared the stories she heard, and I could tell they meant a lot to her. As for the farm itself, it is beautiful and impeccably kept. There is no doubt that my daughter will be returning next summer as she is already asking to go back! RID: 45756

8/12/13   5     5     5     5     5   My twelve year old daughter just returned from her second year experience at Country School Farm full of stories and energy. As a parent, I so appreciate the staff for finding the right balance of guidance and independence for the children. The unstructured time they were given each day was a gift and allowed her to be in the moment and be herself without the distraction of gadgets and technology. I felt the meals they were served while simple, were nutritious. In fact, she has us all excited to try out the hot cocoa with honey and oat and honey cereal recipes, and is begging for a milking goat for her birthday! I wasn't surprised to find the words "I miss Farm Camp" written in sidewalk chalk on our patio the day after she returned. Thank you to the Barkers for offering children this wonderful experience.  7/21/13   5     5     5     5     5   Words cannot express how much this camp impacted our children (ages 8,9 and 11). Not only was it fun and adventurous, but it totally fostered opportunities for them to grow as independent young people. Milking goats to go along with the homemade cereal, collecting eggs for cooking, grinding grain to bake bread, feeding the wide range of animals, harvesting vegetables in the garden for the dinner salad, spinning wool into yarn were just a few of the old school activities that became great life skills for which our kids were really proud to learn! The fun-loving but firm personalities of the camp leaders were such good role models. On the two hour drive home, we heard nothing but joy in their voices. This is not just a summer camp. This is a life changing experience that offers the right combination of independence and responsibility to help children discover the kind of people they want to become. Thank you Jonah, Richard and the whole gang! RID: 45290

7/20/13   5     5     5     5     5   My 10 yr old daughter loved this camp. It was her first sleepaway experience...so glad it was positive. After some initial homesickness she had a great time. I was worried about the 90 degree+ temps while she was there(she didn't notice anything unusual) and whether she would eat much since she is vegetarian (she raved about the food and tried new foods happily thatI'm sure she would have rejected at home). Favorite things were playing with the pugs and bunnies, taking care of the many animals, milking the goats, gathering eggs, helping out with kitchen chores(!), and Richard's stories. She found the Barkers to be friendly and kind and she can't wait to go back next summer. I think this is an excellent camp for energetic, conscientious kids who enjoy being outdoors and love animals.  7/14/13   5     5     5     5     5   When I talked to my 10 y.o. daughter after my parents picked her up from the farm, one of the first things she said was "I swear, that camp was the most fun I ever had in my life." Highlights included doting over a baby goat named Grapefruit, a cat giving birth to a kitten, gathering eggs, and milking goats. But she also gave high praise to the food (homemade bread and butter! two kinds of scrambled eggs for breakfast! honey cocoa at bedtime!), petting rabbits in the bunny kiva, and the pug dogs. The Barkers are open with the children who visit the farm and welcome them into their home for a taste. I had the pleasure of spending time on the farm as a child, and I'm happy that my daughter also had the opportunity. We're hoping she can return for a visit with the Barkers next summer. RID: 45174

7/14/13   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter just finished her 5th yearly visit to the farm. And it is much more a visit to a farm than a typical camp. She had a wonderful time as always. It's such a unique experience for a city kid: while it is highly structured, she feels like she has a lot of independence. Her favorite activities: taking care of the animals, milking goats, and the weekly creek walk and hot dog roast. I highly recommend the camp for kids who love animals and being outside, RID: 45159

7/7/13   5     5     5     5     5   My 12 year old daughter LIVES for this camp each year and loves it. The animals, the setting, the gentle life lessons through such a caring staff. She loves the outside part and all the activities too and of course the creek walk is always memorable. I can't say enough good things about this camp. I wish I could go!  7/7/13   5     5     5     5     5   This was our first year and our 10 year old daughter loved this camp! When it came time to pick her up, she did not want to leave. It was drizzly and humid most of the week, but that did not dampen her spirit at all. She loved everything about this place. Her favorite activities were milking the goats and bunny time. She even learned to bake bread. She insisted on making us a "farmstead" breakfast the next morning which we enjoyed immensely. The change in her maturity level was noticeable immediately. This after only one week! The Barker's allowed her to experience true freedom and independence for probably the first time in her life. Living in the city, her freedom can be very limited in many areas. This experience allowed her to be a 10 year old girl in all its fun glory in a safe nurturing (not coddling) environment. She met many girls there (all girl session)who had been coming to the farm for many years and loving it. She can't wait to return. Wish I could go with her! RID: 45040

7/1/13   5     5     5     5     5   All 3 of my girls attend "farm camp!" We have gone for 4 years, my oldest has been back 2 years as a helper and my 2 youngest started at 7. This is their FAVORITE time of the year and we talk about next year from the minute the car doors shut at pickup time! They each have their own stories about what they enjoy most but my favorite thing is they come home so confident in who they are~this is a camp that builds kids up and allows them to discover things about themselves that they never could in a traditional setting surrounded by peer/societal pressure. This is certainly not a camp for everyone~there is no swimming pool~there is a creek, the food is what's available locally. The kids are experiencing what it's like to live on a working farm, with activities and animal care that gives them a sense of contributing and making a difference. I so wish I could experience the farm~I thank the Barkers from the bottom of my heart for what they give to our kids for a week each year. RID: 44958

7/1/13   5     5     5     5     5   I cannot say enough wonderful things about TCSF. My 10yr old daughter has gone twice and will go back as many years as she is able. This is the highlight of her summer, and the stories she relates are so full of humor that she positively glows while retelling. Reading the very few negative reviews, I understand this is not for everyone. If your child requires a great deal of assurance and individual attention, or is hesitant to try new experiences, it's maybe not the place. The children are given a great deal of independence and responsibility, and because of this they come home with a new confidence and maturity. They learn to be respectful citizens contributing to the community, and learn to appreciate a very simple way of living. There is a purpose behind every "rule," which the Barkers will happily share if asked. Open House is the time to tour and ask questions. They are also responsive via email. I'm grateful my daugther has this experience, if only for a short time each summer. RID: 44957

6/10/13   5     5     5     5     5   We drive almost 500 miles each year for my daughter to go to this camp and it is well worth it. She has gone to this camp 3 years now after having gone to others in the past. No other camp (or farm school, as she would correct me) comes close. She looks forward to camp year round. She especially loves spending time with the animals and yes, the chores. I highly recommend, especially for an introverted child who loves animals. If you are looking for a camp where you will just put on plays and sit songs around the campfire (which my other daughter loves), this is probably not the camp for you. RID: 44712

12/2/12   5     5     5     5     4   My daughter has been to the farm on 8 different occasions. It was one of her most favorite summer activities, full of wonderful experiences and lasting memories. It helped to shape and mold her into the very special young lady she is today. She speaks fondly of her time at the farm, and I'm sure she'll always have a special place in her heart for the Barkers, the animals, and the farm. Thank you. RID: 43138
Click to report rating    11/17/12   5     5     5     5     5   Our daughter has gone to the farm four years in a row and absolutely loves her time there. Two summers ago, she was there during a 100 degree week. She said it was hot but the Barkers were very good about keeping everyone hydrated and making sure everyone wore their hats and sunscreen. She also said she found lots of shady spots where the breeze blew and "it felt so good, like air conditioning!” Last summer, the weather her whole week was in the 70’s and she had just as good a time. I think some people miss the point of the Barker farm. It’s not a fake, air-conditioned resort without any bugs; instead it’s a place where children get to experience something authentic. It’s a real experience, which is getting harder and harder to find these days. RID: 43046
Click to report rating    11/9/12   3     4     3     2     2   My daughter (11) went to this camp once. As she got in the car to leave, she said, "We are never doing this again. EVER!" She explained how noone liked her, and how she couldn't talk about herself and how whenever topics drifted off from the farm the Barkers would yell at her. She is very punctual, and they never told her the time, also she was sweating in the shirts and long jeans they had to wear in 100 degree weather. My husband and I didn't get to even see where she was staying, which didn't make us feel safe or welcome. It was very expensive, and we didn't feel we got our money's worth. She said that most of the time the Barkers weren't even there to teach about the farm. They were in the house while the group sat outside. She felt unwelcome and disliked. Overall, very disappointing experience. RID: 43003
Click to report rating    10/18/12   5     5     5     5     4   My daughter LOVES this camp. It seems to me it is a good opportunity to experience life in the moment, as yourself, without society's modern distractions. RID: 42899
Click to report rating    10/17/12   5     5     5     5     5   My two daughters (ages 11 and 10) have attended the Country School Farm twice and loved it both times. The Barkers are lovely people and provide a simple, peaceful farm experience. The farm itself, though not Amish, is located in the midst of beautiful Amish country in Ohio. My daughters relished the back-to-basics environment and approach. They felt as though they really lived on a farm. Highlights included spending time with the farm animals, the hay loft, the homemade granola, and the infamous creek walk. Don't expect luxury here, but that is exactly what we were seeking. My daughters met a variety of children from all over the country and still talk about the time they spent at "farm camp". RID: 42890

10/8/12   5     5     5     5     5   Our oldest son, age 12, attended The Country School Farm twice, and our younger son, age 9, attended once (so far). They both loved it there! The Barker's are kind, caring, and have many years of experience with children. Our children were well cared for at the farm. The farmhouse is big, beautiful, and inviting. The land is beautiful and it is always fun to see what is growing in the garden. The barn is well maintained and a home for many cute, lively animals. Some activities include milking the goats, feeding the animals, collecting eggs, cleaning the barn, petting goats and orphan lambs, holding the bunnies and young chickens, bathing the ferrets and dogs, watering the garden, and digging holes for planting vegetables. The kids also went on a creek walk which was great fun. This unique experience is worth the money. The Country School Farm is a peaceful place where children experience life as it used to be, and may find an inner peace away from the distractions of modern life. RID: 42824

9/22/12   5     5     5     5     5   This summer my daughter attended her 5th consecutive year at TCFS. My older son spent a week there each summer for 3 consecutive years. Both children have nothing but good things to say about their experiences. The farm is based upon freedom within limits. By letting the children know the rules prior to arrival and on Monday morning, whenever the children have “farmstead” time they are free to explore by themselves (adults observe unobtrusively in the background). When the children have work-time they work closely with adults or one of the older children. My 11 year old reported that she “led large animals group” this year, and having been a younger child supervised by older ones in previous years this was indeed a proud moment for her. This camp is not for everyone and I would recommend making sure that your child understands exactly what is involved attending this camp; but for those who are receptive to it, it is a very different, meaningful, and rewarding experience. Click to report rating    9/16/12   4     3     2     2     2   It was a unique experience, a bit too unique. Ticks, leeches, doorless outhouses, dirty hair, raccoons, and boredom. Twice during the week I had ticks pulled off me, most kids had ticks during the week. I enjoyed the creek walk but one girl got a leech. The outhouse wasn't so bad but it had no door. They throw their garbage in the compost pile right next to the outhouse, one night I had to go the outhouse and when I got there, there were three raccoons in the outhouse eating garbage from the compost pile; they hissed at me, I didn't go and just held it until morning. We couldn't wash our hair the whole week. Overall not that much fun farm work, little supervision, and lots of boredom. Once we left the house in the morning after breakfast we were not let back in until it was time to get ready for bed. All meals were eaten outside with the flies. the showers were really cold, no hot water. The people who ran the camp were very nice but I will never go back to that camp. RID: 42693
Click to report rating    7/29/12   2     2     2     2     2   Our daughter did not complain about this camp, but she did say she does not wish to return. I had read that many children loved this camp. But, from my viewpoint, this camp has certain negative aspects. The major one was that there were so many "don'ts". Don't bring this, don't bring that. Don't complain, don't talk about your life outside camp. Don't exchange phone numbers with other campers, don't send photos of the family, don't wear any clothes with print. I didn't really care about the various clothing restrictions nor about the restrictions on what the kids should bring. But, after my child came home, I realized that these restrictions were part of an overall "don't" mentality. The camp didn't embrace a happy philosophy. What attracted us to the camp was the no-technology, simple-farm life philosophy. Overall, my child learned little to nothing about farm life, had little to no instruction about how to do farm tasks, and did not get a good variety of nutrition. RID: 42140
Click to report rating    7/29/12   2     2     2     2     2   There are many children who love this camp. Our family, however, found it limited and unfriendly. Food was really very limited nutritionally and NOT the nourishing family-style meals one would expect. The kids were not instructed much in farm activities or processes. Most of the "instruction" came from seasoned campers, not the staff. Rules are extremely strict. For instance, the kids are not allowed to talk about their lives or interests! It appeared that the children could have been taught many other simple farm traditions, such as cooking the eggs they gathered, or hanging their wet and damp clothes on an outside or inside clothesline. The staff were not friendly or warm and seemed almost secretive. A few minutes could have been devoted to having the campers show their parents/families around the camp to give the family more of a connection with the kids' experiences. The children did not seem to gain any substantial understanding of the animals or plants or farm work. RID: 42136

11/3/11   5     5     5     5     5   When I arrived at this camp, I didn't know what to expect. It was alot different from my city life I live in Chicago. The first things I realized when I got there was that the people were friendlier, the look was prettier, and the air smelt natural like animals. Every step I took to the barn (the first day) the excitement grew inside me! I looked forward to Penney's hot chocolate and Richard's bedtime stories every night! Kids my age taught me things I did not know I was capable of! The chores taught me important life facts not only about myself but about farm life as well! I am 12 turning 13 in January and was extatic when I was invited to return as an older camper! This camp is for kids of all ages, not just older kids like me! I never got bored with all the fun activities like milking goats, picking berries, playing with bunnies and one of my favorites, catching frogs! This camp was an amazing experience and I look very forward to returning this summer! RID: 37215

10/27/11   5     5     5     5     5   Both of our children have attended the Country School Farm for seven years each. The experience has been exceptional for both of them, creating a deep sense of self-confidence and an ability to work with animals in ways that few children experience in today's world. Our son, now a freshman in college, still looks back on his time at the Farm as one of the most formative in his life, and our daughter, age 12, takes real pride in her ability to milk the goats by hand at 6:00 in the morning. Richard and Penney, and their family, have created a safe and creative environment full of experiences that will last a lifetime. RID: 37164

10/18/11   5     5     5     5     5   My 2 daughters have been attending the Barkers' Country School Farm for 5 year in a row. It is their favorite week of the summer and at the top of their wish list every year. They refer to the farm often throughout the year. This past summer, my daughter went for 2 weeks. She is already saving her money to be able to go for 2 weeks again next summer. This is not your typical camp, but rather a wonderful opportunity for children to experience a sense of independence and adventure in a simple, country setting. The farm is a home-away-from-home for my daughters. They have the opportunity to work on the farm, to learn from their peers and to take leadership roles if and when they are ready. We are truly grateful for the Barkers and the very unique summer farm experience they have provided for our children! RID: 37094
Click to report rating    10/18/11   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter has attended this camp for three years in a row. She is packing a month before we drive to Charm every year! She loves the unstructured time to be a child and be a part of the natural world. I love that she can spend a week with no electronics. She especially loves the sleeping porches, Penny's hot cocoa, and spending time with the animals. I found it funny the first year she returned she told me that she was up each morning at 5 to go and milk the goats. She then had oatmeal, honey and goat milk for breakfast. If I had told her to get up for chores at home and fed her oatmeal for breakfast she would have balked! When I dropped her off the first year there was not even a look over her shoulder as she made her way to the house. When I returned the first year I expected her to come running to me for a hug. Instead, she began relating the weeks events to her brother and told me where her bags were located! This is a wonderful place! RID: 37093
Click to report rating    10/18/11   5     5     5     5     5   My Daughter has gone to the Barker's for 4 summers. She is 14 and had two sessions as a 'regular' camper and 3 sessions (2 in one year) as an 'older' camper who worked with the younger children. Like others have said - this is her very favorite time of the year. But this camp is different - but in an incredibly special way. The Barkers have been running their home camp for many years and they have extensive backgrounds in education. This camp is designed with intention and thoughfulness for our children. My daughter raved about the food and the activities and the quiet time on the farm and really appreciated that external influences, books, electronics, talk of your life outside the farm, etc, was discouraged. It teaches kids to be present in a quieter world. The first year my daughter was at camp, she fell and had to get checked for a concussion - the Barkers were fantastic in handling the situation, caring for her, and keeping us informed. I neve worry when she is there. RID: 37091

10/18/11   5     5     5     5     5   The Country School Farm has been the most amazing place for my daughter, age 8 1/2. She has attended camp here for 3 years and cannot wait to continue until they kick her out:) Attendance to camp is always the only gift on her Christmas wish list. The Barkers are a wonderful family, the farm is clean, the animals well cared for and the entire experience is life changing. Unlike other camps we have attended, The Country School Farm excels on building individuality, freedom, respect for both people, animals and nature and reminds kids to slow down and take the time to smell the roses. In today's busy, media driven technological society, kids are often "lost" in the shuffle of the high demands of life. In addition, we live in a world of "excess". The Country School Farm teaches kids to love themselves, their surroundings and the simple things in life and not be caught up in all of the unnecessary evils of our world. This is an amazing unique camp! RID: 37090
Click to report rating    10/18/11   5     5     5     4     5   I attended this camp as a child from ages 10-13, now my daughter(11) is looking forward to her 4th year. While it was a life-changing experience for me,& my daughter says every year that she would rather have one week at The Farm than all her Christmas presents, it is NOT a camp for everyone. Children at The Farm are safely supported & encouraged but not coddled. The philosophy of the Barkers is very much in line with Montessori Education, so if you are comfortable with that The Farm will make sense to you. If you are used to Scouting or Religious based summer camps this will be very different. The Farm is an adventure into a more meaningful existence. While there are not "activities", there is work that needs to be done. Successfully accomplishing this work fills Farm children with awe at nature, science & their own ability to affect their environment. Other kids might prefer to be entertianed & scheduled, they will not thrive at The Farm. You know your child best. RID: 37087
Click to report rating    10/18/11   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter is 10 and has attended the camp for 3 summers. She loves it. This camp is for kids who love close contact with animals and the outdoors and don't want or need a ton of adult micromanagement - like a Montessori school. She loves being "with" the farm animals and not just looking at them from behind a fence. It is not for kids who want organized sports or other modern overblown adult-organized activities. It is simple and old-fashioned, which is why my daughter felt relaxed there - not overwhelmed. She always had plenty to eat. The camp carries the spirit of the Amish area surrounding it - simple pleasures and a relaxed pace. I think it is a good break from the over-stimulation (tv, video games, sports, etc.) of modern life for kids. RID: 37086
Click to report rating    10/18/11   5     5     5     5     5   I went to visit the Barkers for this farm experience when I was a child & our children go every summer. Our daughter, 12, just finished her 7th summer, and our son, 8, his 2nd. It is their favorite week of the year. Every year, they start to plan next year's visit as soon as they get into the car. The Barkers send pictures of the animals and land throughout the year & the kids can't wait to see them. Yes, the Barkers ask children not to sing pop culture songs because they ask children to be present at the farm in their hearts and body - they can listen to music & watch TV & surf the internet anywhere - they can only experience the farm for that one week. The meals are far from meager - they eat from the land & have a strong connection to the foods they are eating. True, they don't go inside except at bedtime because they are there to experience farm life, not hang out in the bunkroom. This experience is an incredible opportunity and the world is lucky to have The Barkers in it! RID: 37083

8/7/11   3     2     3     2     1   I am a parent. My child, age 7, returned from this camp begging to never go again. She has a simple, ordered life at home and is a hard worker. She did not have "fun." They were told not to sing, from what I can glean this was at all times. They were not permitted indoors except to sleep. They were fed meals that sound meager and not particularly healthy (saltine type crackers, cheese, fruit, and trail bologna for lunch every day). If your kids already can garden and bake bread at home, this program is of little value to you. Of additional concern, they take children as young as 6, yet did not once remind my child to apply sunscreen (but she is not sunburnt). She states that there was no adult instruction or oversight of goat milking, egg collecting, or bunny care- other campers were the teachers. For over $700 a week, I expected more. My kid deserved fun not JUST work. Also, I find the attitude of no open-ness and no visitation concerning in light of my child's stories. RID: 36635

Click to report rating    4/27/11   1     2     3     1     1   I went to farm camp, and I did not enjoy it at all. The staff was strict, rude, and unattentive. While this may be a good fit for some kids who love animals, it is not for anyone like me who has a problem with strict rules, no free time, and a small selection of people. I might reccomend going with a good friend because there are so little kids who go each week. It's a really expensive camp, so you need to think really hard before you send your children there. Each time we've picked them up, they were glowing. They loved the stories, sitting together drinking goat milk hot chocolate, taking care of the animals, and walking in the creek. I can imagine that there are a lot of kids who wouldn't enjoy the farm. But for kids who love animals and can find pleasure in simplicity, this is an extraordinary camp. RID: 32323

Click to report rating    7/18/07   5     5     5     5     5   This is a small "camp" run for many years by the Barker Family. So, this is actually a visit to their home and not really a camp experience in the traditional sense of the word. It is a real working family-farm and every child that goes there is actually contributing to the running of the farm. My daughter absolutely loved her experience here. She came home positively glowing with excitement and tales of her week at the farm. She is a little on the shy side but Richard Barker was able to build and grow her confidence in just a few days. This is a wonderful place for kids who love animals, the outdoors and the idea of living on a farm. The food was by all accounts fantastic. This was such a fantastic antidote to the life that my daughter leads during the school year and I have no doubt that it will be one of her favorite memories of her childhood. RID: 13093
