Click to report rating    6/18/16   1     1     3     1     1   My daughter as a high school senior was recruited to work as a counselor. Information provided was just what the campers receive. No nurse or health care person was on the premises from June 12 thru the 17th, she was on vacation. 5 staff counselors were not 21 but 18 years of age including my daughter. They should be CPR certified and trained in first aid. None of the 5 counselors including my daughter were. There were only 3 people working that were 21 years old, a maintenance worker (camp ranger) and 1 older lady(mama bear). My daughter who has no training in the water was sent out with a group of girl scouts, there canoe almost jumped the concrete barricades and would have gone into the rapids. A major accident was averted. There was a poisonous snake by the story book tree yet my daughter was not warned and took 2 girl scouts to that area. Contracts that counselors signed were falsified t show that the were hired for jobs other than the counselors that they were hired as. RID: 49677
Click to report rating    6/17/16   4     2     4     4     4   My daughter who is 9 just attended this camp for a week. I was concerned in the summer heat, since it appeared that swimming and other activities were in the direct heat and sun and she is fair skinned. When we dropped her off the camp facilities looked old and worn, but hey, its camp. Roughing it for a week never hurt anyone. Leaving my daughther I was concerned and tried to make her as self sufficient as possible. Meet her direct counselors that came out and greeted us. They were very nice/friendly. Told us some of what was to be expected. The living quarters were 4 girls in a cabin, dingy/old and buggy. counselors are in there own cabin. My daughter said overall she had a very good time and food was even suited for her pickiness. She said counselors were nice to her. The only down side was a bully in her cabin who was harrasing her every day. Overall good experience. Make sure to pack all that is on the list and teach her how to use stuff and be self sufficient. Click to report rating    5/12/16   5     2     5     5     5   I love this camp, I go every year, in fact I'll be going this summer as well. I'm 12 year old. I love the food, to me it's not bad at all. And the good this is the counselors do not sleep in the cabin with you. The only thing I really have a problem with is the counselors. The favorite some of the girls and are sometimes mean. And kinda judge mental. But other then that I love camp la jita. My favorite part of camp is the pool... Which should be cleaned a bit better but it is camp not a 5 star resort so I guess it isn't that big of a deal. RID: 49584
1/3/14   1     3     1     1     1   Sounds like little changes over time. The teenage/ college age counselors are not all sunny and fun. They are poorly equipped to deal with different personalities and imposed punitive and embarrassing punishments on girls that " misbehaved" we were supposed to go tubing... When I attended & about 1/2 my group was called out for things like losing an item; being late for something... Homesick to much.... And told we would sit in the community cabin for 7 hours and do nothing but sit. :0(. It rained and nobody was singled out....I think God intervened.... Horrible experience... Some Gil's singled out as liked and others disregarded and quickly irritated so called counselors. If you send your kid make sure she goes in a group with friends and make sure you send what is on the list.... I was going to be singled out that tubing day because my Mom did not send a white shirt for Sunday service and the GS handbook. :0(. I was 9 years old...How were we supposed to know..obey the list! Click to report rating    9/15/13   5     5     5     5     5   My review of Camp La Jita is from my stays there from 1966-1970. I loved going there, we only swam in the river, swept out the dinosaur tracks everyday, there was no electricity in the cabins, only our flashlights at night. I loved the swimming ballet session and canoeing session! Singing songs after a meal in the dining hall was so much fun. I know it must have been hot, but I honestly don't remember ever thinking about it, we just had great fun playing, hiking, giggling, being innocent girls. The daily softball game after supper was a treat. Like was so simple and good. Years later, I and another camp mate were the first 2 women from San Antonio appointed to the first class of women at the US Air Force Academy - I believe GS prepared us for that ground breaking journey :) RID: 45993
Click to report rating    8/2/13   2     1     3     2     3   My daughter just returned from a week here with girl scouts. We are unpacking her gear and she is missing the money I sent for her to spend at the trading post. I left $30 and she said she only bought a mood ring. She is also missing her medication. I am really hoping that the camp will overnight these things to us. I am so mad. My daughter said the food was pretty bad. There are no fans in the rooms, no electricity at all except one light bulb. The screen on my daughter's cabin was torn and we asked them to fix it when we checked her in. she said they never did. Upon check-in, no one gave me a receipt for her medication or the money that I left. They put it in an envelope with her name on it. I'm furious that I may be facing a 4 hour drive tomorrow to retrieve these items! RID: 45482
Click to report rating    7/27/13   1     3     3     1     1   My daughter just returned from Camp La Jita. Yes, the cabins are primitive, full of bugs, and food is mediocre. I expected that. But I was disappointed in the quality of the counselors and the general lack of organization at the camp. When we drove in on day 1, no counselors greeted us. The parents kind of direct each other while staff members sit under trees and at tables. There is no tour of the camp or schedule offered. I left without knowing there was a dining hall- thought they must cook on an open fire. There was 1 counselor for my daughter's group of 12. My daughter came home with no idea what the Story Tree was. Sad. The Trading Post is only open on Wed. so when my daughter left her water bottle there, no one could retrieve it. She had to drink from a hose for the remaining three days of camp. A hose. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that counselors knew a camper had no water bottle in temps approaching 100 and did nothing about it. Never again. RID: 45388
Click to report rating    6/19/13   5     4     5     5     5   Camp La Jita played a huge role in my childhood. I enjoyed each summer I spent there and have very fond memories of the friends I made, the songs I learned and the experiences I had, including riding horses, and the polar bear club. Yes, the facilities are not a five star resort, but you are CAMPING, roughing it, getting out of the city! It was a nice change of pace for me. Yes, there are bugs, lots of bugs, but again, you are camping, it comes with the territory. My counselors were such a great influence that I still remember their names 20 years later (Cowboy and Candy). I honestly do not remember the food being bad, infact that was the only place I actually tried NEW food. It was a wonderful experience and I can not wait for my daughter to join girl scouts! It makes me sad to see this camp have a such a low rating. RID: 44819
7/27/12   2     3     3     3     5   Seriously, if staff slept in MY cabin it would be a serious invasion of privacy. Not all the campers are little girls, there are plenty of campers that are teens. Also, the staff is always nearby supervising or in case of problems. The facilities aren't outdated, for heaven's sake. It's meant to take you away from the modern age and get to camp for real. The camp counselor names are for fun. It's optional and you don't have to have one. It's for fun, and most of the campers have camp names too. The food is perfectly disgusting, I will say, and there are bugs, but you're outside and that's expected. You have something to do the majority of the time, and it's fun mostly. A lot of the activities are directed towards little kids, so older girls might not have as much fun. But if you have a problem, talk to Psyche. Campers will know what I mean, and of you're thinking of going take that advice. I go every year and it's overall a good experience, and it's recommendable. RID: 42124
Click to report rating    9/24/07   1     2     2     2     3   At least years ago the counselors do not sleep in the cabins with the campers. They have their own separate cabin, which causes problems. The facilities are ancient (the same ones my mother used in the 50s!). The counselors have fake names like "Kermit" and "Rainbow," etc... which is both disconcerting and weird. It's a good value, but they don't even let you TUBE on the river anymore. It's just camp in the dry Texas desert. RID: 15560
