No where on their site do they state they need additional advanced notice to prepare for this. My twin daughters who are high functioning autism and require guidance on completing self care routines were denied camp a week prior to their scheduled stay because they did not have extra staff to assist them. We had to come up with a creative reason why they would not be attending camp as promised without them learning they have been rejected in life AGAIN. This was meant to be an independence, self confidence building experience. My girls were rejected and abused at birth, in foster care for the first 2 years of their lives. We adopted them and have worked very hard to build a secure, confident life for them. Rejection from a camp program? Heartbreaking. Confidence shattering. RID: 52733
Click to report rating    8/23/18   4     3     5     5     4   Camp Talooli has been in my life for a long time now, and the negative reviews seem to be secondhand from parents who don’t actually see the camp during the day. All activities are “challenge by choice” meaning if you don’t want to do something, you don’t need to. Kids are put into groups on a schedule because it allows for their counselor to be able to pay extra attention to how each child is feeling. emotionally, but also so the kids will be able to make connections on a more personal level. Camp Talooli is about personal bonding, and rustic camp culture. Their facilities have been used since the 50’s, but it also teaches children to step away from modern luxuries for a week or so, and focus on having a good time at camp. The staff is extremely well trained, and can ask for any help when they need to. Staff members go through a week of personalized training to help better their counseling skills, and I think it reflects on how their kids feel by the end of the week. RID: 52215
Click to report rating    7/5/15   5     4     5     5     5   I've personally worked at Camp Talooli for two years now. We go through three years of training and a week of staff training before every summer. I've gone here since I was 5 years old and it's a life changing experience. Yes, the shower houses aren't the greatest, but it's the best camp I've attended, and I've attended a lot. Other comments on this website say that campers are forced to do activities. That's completely false. Our policy is "challenge by choice." So when a camper doesn't want to do something, they don't have to. Our main goal is to create leaders and provide a safe place for kids to have fun and enjoy either their summer, winter, or spring. I'd recommend this camp to anyone. Camp gives kids a world of good. Click to report rating    10/13/14   5     4     5     5     5   Camp Talooli is amazing! I have been going for five years, and I will be a CIT this year! The staff is well trained- they have three years of CIT training and staff training before camp starts every year! The activities are well run- each activity either has a counselor or a program director run it. Everyday campers can go swimming or boating. Groups are from 5-8 campers, which is a perfect size because in really small groups campers can't make as many friends, but in big groups they are overlooked. The cabins are great- they are rustic, tucked in the woods, and have bunk beds, a personal favorite. The only reason I gave facilities a four is because the shower houses aren't amazing, but they are functional and day campers don't even have to use them! The camp is well worth what you pay for it! In conclusion loving staff + good facilities + fun activities + one on one attention= a great summer for a camper! RID: 48070
5/1/14   1     1     2     2     1   This place was bad... It scarred my very existence, I can't even comprehend why people would send there kids to a torture machine. My eyes bleed when "good old jeff" (the owner) comes into sight with his tight short shorts and his huge long cowboy hat. The lazy excuse for a lake is red like tea and slimy ( I don't think it was water!). I felt like all the workers there were controlled by Jeff's telechenetic alien abilities. Every time I had dinner there, jeff would say:"what a great home cooked dinner we had last night....Yea GOOD FOR A FIVE YEAR OLD WHO KNOWS HOW TO USE A MICROWAVE AND POOR WATER INTO A CUP! This place is a nightmare.... RID: 47266

Click to report rating    3/4/08   5     3     4     4     5   My children have attended Camp Talooli for many years. My son is 12 years old and has been going since the age of 5. I cannot describe all of the benefits my child has gotten from attending camp. He came home feeling more confident, helpful, independent, and responsible. I was just about blown away when my child offered to take out the trash because thats what his group did for their "Talooli Duty". I honestly have no complaints about Camp Talooli. I have been there on a number of occassions, and maybe the facilities could use some work but the program, trained staff, and experience of the directors far outweighs inadequate bathroom facilities. I feel comfortable sending my children to Talooli and know that they can't wait to be old enough to be counselors there--because its what they love--and not because of what little they'll get paid. Click to report rating    1/30/08   4     1     3     2     3   The staff is pretty good. Some are great, but some really stink. It depends if they're there because they like it, or there for the money. The facilities are the worst I have ever seen. When I went, I didn't go to the bathroom at all for the around 8 hour day camp day because I couldn't stand the bathrooms. The activities are all right, but you are forced to do all of them. If you don't want to do art for example, you have to sit there and do it anyway. It would be nice if they let you choose some of your activities. Personal attention was low. You got lost in the group, and you rarely were individually noticed. Unless you were canoeing, where only one other person was in the canoe. Then you tended to be noticed more. The price was alright, but you really were getting what you payed for. It was between $100 and $200 for a week of day camp, which is alright considering the staff pay and the price of all the materials (canoes, art supplies, etc.) I would not recommend this camp at all. Click to report rating    11/13/07   5     4     5     5     5   Camp Talooli is awesome! The staff is well trained and passionate, many having attended as children. Group sizes are small for an intimate experience where campers participate in swimming, boating, a ropes challenge course, nature education, arts and crafts, archery and much more. I loved attending as a child, and after having gone through the counselor in training program I love working on staff! RID: 17028
