Click to report rating    1/6/22   4     5     5     3     4   Summer 2022 will be my 7th summer attending Camp Chipinaw. I must say, nothing in the world compares to the feeling when you're at camp. It is truly my second home and I have made friendships that I truly know will last a lifetime. It has activities for all interests and the food is tolerable, and sometimes even good. You either love or hate color war, but I always loved it and it is one of my favorite parts of the summer. The atmosphere at camp is truly like nothing else. Everyone is like a family. I truly wish I had been more grateful for my earlier summers as the years have flown by and I am now entering my last summer as a camper. Send your kids here for the most amazing memories and the best summer home. Also, coming back after/during the pandemic has been the best summer of my lifetime. Sure, things were a little different this past summer, but it still has the camp feel we all long for. I can't wait for this summer! RID: 53513

Click to report rating    4/11/20   5     5     5     5     5   This camp is the best. I have been going for eight years so you should really listen to my opinion! I love camp. I made my best freinds there and my counselors were like my second mothers. I occasionally got homesick but I was immediately helped by Sheryl (rip) or michael or shaeri Baer. They are such nice people. Whoever is writing these mean comments should be ashamed. They are all grown adults with kids who are probably insanley spoiled and act like a baby no wonder they don’t like camp. Camp is my second home. The activities are amazing. All the people running them really make your experience at each activity Amazing. The kids are pretty jappy but who cares they are all super nice. The lake is so pretty. Also I’m writing from 2020 so this is recent! I love my summers their and if your deciding whether or not to send your kids there. DO IT! It will be the best descision ever. I love camp and the people there.!! RID: 53190

7/16/18   4     5     5     4     4   Our kids are having the best summers at Chipinaw! 3 years in a row and they can't wait to go back. Our daughter has made so many good friends and has tried new things, new foods and we saw her confidence really grow by the end of her 1st summer! Now playing basketball, MCing shows and being in shows, learned how to waterski etc. Our son loves the sports and the fact that you can join sports leagues if you are more competitive. They have every sport imaginable even international sports like Rugby & Cricket. The grounds are pristine, and the brand new dining hall with outdoor patio is a must see. Visit this camp and send your kids here without hesitation. RID: 51998

6/8/16   1     1     1     1     1   I had a horrible experience here. The girls are extremely cliquey and you get victimized for not having certain clothes or gear for color war. The camp was much better off with its old leader Robin but after she left Ally took over and has made the camp even worse! Everybody here is materialistic and girls from Florida and New Jersey tend to block off anybody else. The camp is also over sexualized and there are often many hookups during socials. The evening activities are never fun because counselors get to pick who participates in most cases so pick they're favorites and campers who are a bit shy never get to participate. Silver Lake definitely does not teach any values and is a complete waste of money. I have also had traumatizing experiences here and I strongly suggest that you do not send your child to silver lake.  7/25/15   1     1     1     1     1   Well. If you want your child to be scarred for life then send their child here. I am 21 years old now still thinking about the horrible experience I've had. They go as follows: 1. I was sick as a dog when I was about 11-12 and I went to the doctor they said I had nothing wrong with me. I went back to my bunk coughing for 3 weeks straight waking up my fellow campers who then hated me for this because never got sleep. I went to silver lake for a second opinion and they then said I had bronchitis and needed medicine as soon as possible. This has scarred me the most. 2.the kids there are japs. Jewish American princesses 3. The counsler pick favorites 4. Activities were fun except when the counslers picked favorites 5. Color war they make it seem like an actual war. It's not that serious 6. couodnt call home. Was only allowed one call a week even for homesick children and the counsler would disregard if you were crying for hours after the phone call. RID: 48936

2/27/13   5     5     5     5     5   This camp is great! My children have been going for a three years. The directors and staff are all very hands on and take great care of my kids. The facilities are top notch. Just look at their website. It tells it all. RID: 43830
Click to report rating    2/4/13   2     5     5     2     4   My daughters have attended this camp for several years. They always loved it, but this past summer turned us off to sending them back. Allie was unresponsive to my older daughters feelings. Before the summer started i heard rumors that the new head of girls side was planning on breaking up the oldest girls bunk into separate rooms. I spoke to Allie before camp and she told me that it would be fine. As the bus approached camp my daughter was told that she was 1 of 5 other girls who would be separated from her friends in the bunk. My daughter was very unhappy. After several emotional phone calls with Allie, I was extremely frustrated. She had no concept that camp is a choice and children look forward to it all year. Instead she stood by her decision at the cost of her campers and concerned parents. Finally in the 2nd week, of a 3 1/2 week session she finally allowed the girls to move their bunks. I felt like my child's happiness was sacrificed for her ego. RID: 43574
Click to report rating    1/20/13   3     4     5     5     5   I have gone to this camp for 6 years and thoroughly enjoyed it up until my last year. The leading staff retired and the camp brought in new staff. The leader of the girls side was horrible. She clearly did not care to make personal relationships with the campers and was manipulative and rude. She is the majority of the reason i will not be back. The facilities are beautiful and the activities were fun. The only problem with the facilities was that the bathrooms frequently became unavailable for use because of constant clogging. The only major problem i had with the camp was the staff. Personal attention was great, there were 3-4 counselors in every bunk. This created ample ability to bond with the counselors and fellow campers. RID: 43439
Click to report rating    12/18/12   4     5     5     5     5   I made some of my best friends at this camp. Its different then chipinaw, because these girls arent concerned about material things. However, i liked this camp better when Robin and the other group leaders were there, now there is alli, and she doesnt care about the campers as much. I went for five years and i can say i had really good experiences here. RID: 43242

12/3/12   4     5     5     2     3   I attended to Camp Chipinaw from 2000 to 2005, so this might be a dated review. This camp isn't perfect but it's still recommendable. I'll tell you the good things and bad things about this camp. GOOD THINGS: The camp is very pretty and has a nice wooden, country feel to it. The owner, Michael, is a really nice guy who loved going to camp as a child and it really shows in how he excitingly runs things. The activities accommodate everything in sports to arts. BAD THINGS: I don't know about now, but the bullying in all the years I attended Chipinaw was OUT OF CONTROL! The counselors in bunks are rarely around so it's up to your child to defend themselves 80% of the time for 8 weeks. Also, none of the staff is interested in dealing with homesickness so your child will have to overcome that by themselves. The food tastes bad, OVERALL, Camp Chipinaw is a good camp with its heart in the right place. You might want to help your child overcome some of their sensitivity flaws before going RID: 43151

7/17/12   4     5     4     4     5   The reason for my good rating is that the camp is in no way a bad camp. You definitely get a lot of things for what you pay; canteen every night, programs, equipment, etc. Many of the reviews here (specifically negative ones written by campers) should be taken with a grain of salt. Most of the time, campers are upset with things that they don't understand; can't call your parents? It's not because we want you to be upset, but rather because home-sickness won't get better with a call to your parents, trust me. I am mainly speaking as a review to future counselors. Like many camping jobs, it's hard work and camp chipinaw is no exception. Often, our time off would be sacrificed for the kids (my year, we lost our only day off for the entire week, can't say we were happy about that one). You would think that making sure the counselors (who look after the kids) should be up there on being treated well; many of us became sick due to lack of adequate rest putting in 18 hours of non-stop work. Click to report rating    6/30/12   2     4     3     2     2   Daughter went for 2 summers. At one activity, If one camper didnt listen daughter had to run laps, etc. Camp is suppose to be fun and laid back. RID: 41501

2/3/12   1     4     4     1     1   NEVER GO HERE!, I was a germaphobe and the campers abused me for it, they would do mean things like dry hump my bed, or throw things at me. The counselors would not care get me in trouble for no reason since I was having emotional issues and I needed attention at the time. This camp ruined my camp expirience do not let it ruin you childs! THE BULLIED ARE NEVER HELPED ONLY THE BULLIED! RID: 40261
Click to report rating    10/21/11   5     4     5     5     5   What can I say except my kids love this camp. My oldest has gone for 4 years and calls it his second home. He has made some life long friends. My youngest went for the first time last year and there was a smile on his face 24/7. The staff is great especially Robin. He truly cares about the campers and does everything to make them feel at home. I have seen great improvements to the facilities each and every year especiallly the boys bunks. I can't say enoough great things about Silver Lake. RID: 37124

9/14/10   3     5     4     1     1   Wow... now here's a person you must listen to. I have been going to this camp for 7 years... so I believe I have some seniority over all of you. Personally, I did not like this camp at all. The clique was: if you didn't have Wii, PS3, XBOX 360, and everything else, you didn't fit in with everyone else and was set as an outcast. The biggest problem is the concentration of JAPs the younger campers need a HUGE wake-up call (and I don't mean reveille) the world doesn't revolve around you and, yes the counselors can be a little young, but they are just exploring the world trying to have a good time! Don't take your child's unhappiness out on them! Actually listen to them, and maybe they will learn to be able to communicate better and not be such ****s... PEACE RID: 34070

5/10/10   4     4     4     4     4   The only issue my kid had was a kid from Boca, FL that was a bigtime bully. The camp didnt do a lot to stop him. He was nice to the kids good at baseball and sports but a bully to the weaker kids. A kid like "JD" has to be kicked out already. I saw the mother on VD and she was a monster too so no luck talking to her. She made fun of his overweight and he then took it out on our kids. Other wise great camp but gotta disrequest the bullies. Owners step up now RID: 32741
Click to report rating    8/15/09   5     5     5     5     4   This was our first year at Chipinaw@Silver Lake. We knew how wonderful the camp was when our son said,"Camp is like a second family". The counselors and group leaders are very helpful and concerned with the children having the best time possible. Silver Lake strives to make every child feel important and really takes each child's individuality into account when working with them. They try to encourage each child to be a well rounded individual, by encouraging them to choose a wide range of electives. The wide range of activities are terrific. We were very impressed with the facilities and food choices. The lake is beautiful and the pool is heated, a big plus when it gets chilly out. If needed, the infirmary does everything possible to make your child feel secure and comfortable. The camp makes upgrades each year that truly impact the children. This is a great camp!! RID: 30737

6/29/09   5     5     5     5     5   I HAVE 4 CHILDREN. MY OLDEST SON WENT TO THIS CAMP FOR 5 YEARS. MY YOUNGEST CHILD IS THERE FOR HER FIRST SUMMER AND THIS IS MY 2ND SONS 7TH SUMMER. MY 3RD SON HAD SOME HOMESICKNESS LAST YEAR AND THE CAMP HANDLED IT VERY WELL. HE CALLED ME AS NEEDED AND WAS ATTENDED TO BY VERY CARING COUNSELORS AND DIVISION LEADER. HE WENT BACK THIS SUMMER SO HE OBVIOUSLY HAD A LOT OF FUN. THE OWNER IS ALSO A VERY NICE AND CARING GUY AND VERY AVAILABLE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAMP. RID: 30275

2/13/09   5     5     5     5     5   There really shouldn't be any bad comments about this camp. With five years of memories and experience, I would never trade the times I've spent with Chipinaw for anything. Every moment I wish I could be at camp. And when I am there, I could never be any happier. I count down the days until I'm back at my second home once again. If you're sending your child for the first time, they'll love it, it's filled with excitement every where you are. It's truly an experience of a lifetime. I will continue coming back for a long time and cannot wait for another summer with Camp Chipinaw and all of the friends I have there! RID: 28964

Click to report rating    1/2/09   5     4     4     5     5   First of all I'd like to change the gender from "co-ed" to highly seperated. I love going to chipinaw more than anything truly, but co-ed is a lie. Even the foreign counselors who would like nothing more than to keep the girls away from the boys agree that seeing them is rare. The dining halls are seperate, the activities are seperate, the evening activities-although technically we're all in the playhouse together we are on opposite sides seperated by a walkway with counselors on the end scolding us for talking. Of course from that point on we are mixed during canteen and courts. Now, don't get me started on Cheryl, honestly. She truly makes girls camp a terrible place to be. Forget her though- the friendships you'll make at chipinaw are indispensible and the staff varies of course- but stop complaining just as anywhere not everyone is perfect... All you jappy parents- I'm sure your kids have some teachers at school they don't like... Probably some you don't like either...do you pull t RID: 28287
Click to report rating    11/23/08   5     5     5     5     5   Dirty? This person must be dirty! Chipinaw has a full time staff that goes around to clean. They even have people come into my bunk every day and scrub the bathrooms!!! RID: 27642
Click to report rating    10/25/08   5     5     5     5     5   Obviously this person has no idea what they are talking about. It is in all the written material that the canteen is only open in the evening most nights. Too bad after 5 summers they didin't learn anything. RID: 27172
Click to report rating    10/18/08   1     1     1     1     2   In the 5 summers i've spent at camp chipinaw all i can say is that it is 10 months and $40,000+ thrown down the drain. The only thing that is good about the camp is the friends which completely brain washes you into thinking that the camp is actually good. If you are sending your child as a first time camper than please consider another camp, because even if you go on a tour and one of the owners shows you how great this camp is it's mostly all staged. Because they always told us as campers to always say hi and smile to the tours. Another example of this is shown at the canteen this summer when Michael told one of his tours that your child could come any time during the day and get any candy that he wanted. One kid heard this and came over to Michael and his tour in the canteen and said "Hey Michael can I have a twix?" Of course Michael had to give it to him in terms of protecting the camps reputation and his wallet gave it to him, but with an added bonus as the dirtiest look ever. RID: 27096

9/3/08   1     3     3     1     1   This was my child 2nd year and it was pure torture for her.The 3 new girls were very clicky, rude and mean to her to the point she cried herself to sleep every night and wanted to come home.We spoke to the group leader& Cheryl a number of times and was told they were dealing with the problem.I was calling the camp every week.At one point we decided to speak to Michael who in turn admitted knowing everything that was going on but in reality had no clue whatsoever. He hung up on us during the phone call. When we called back we got wonderful Cheryl(ha!ha!).They claim that my child had a smile on her face during the day and everything was fine.Little did they know or the counselors that they hire know what was going on behind closed doors when they got back to the bunk. The 3 girls commented on the clothing my child was wearing and never let her become friends with them.Because of this I will not recommend this place and my child is not returning.Think twice before sending your child there. RID: 26309
Click to report rating    9/1/08   5     5     5     5     5   My daughter went for the first time this year and had a great summer. The kids at this camp seem to be very nice and not as cliquey as at some other places. My only criticisms were that they need to re-do the canteen for Silver Lake and the art pavilion. They also could do a much better job at gymnastics. However on the plus side, the lake was excellent and my daughter loved waterskiing and playing in the lake. The head of girls camp Robin is very nice and responsive. RID: 26277

7/31/08   1     3     3     1     3   I am a past staff member of this camp. I worked there 2 summers. The owners Michael and Shari are NOT nice people. The girls HC cheryl is nasty and the boys HC Dave, while he has moments of being human is a short, egomaniac. Let us not forget little ole Glenn the Troll!!My son attended while I worked there, they lost him! Luckily...I knew where he was beause the idiot counselor sure didn't. It's scary enough sending your kid away...Don't send them there. The supervision is very poor, the head staff do not care about anyone or anything outside of their own little clique. Truly reprehensible. RID: 25280
Click to report rating    7/30/08   5     5     4     4     3   My kids love Silver Lake--they consider it their summer home. I've now have had two years to look and really see the camp--because I also have been employed there. Without a doubt the staff is amazing and the head of the girls and boys camps you would not find better people to lead by example. They have instill a since of family to there campers and counselors. It is a joy to see such happy children and such happy staff. We can't wait to go back. RID: 25260
Click to report rating    7/27/08   3     3     4     3     3   Silver Lake is a decent camp. My experience was marred by an extremely dysfunctional (and slightly overcrowded) bunk. However, my sibling has gone for a couple of years and really enjoys it. Personal attention level is ok. Counselors were responsive, but my second year, there were 9-10 kids to 1 counselor. Counselors were usually very nice to campers. Many were excellent, but some others were irresponsible (returning to campus drunk). Some facilities were good, like the pool and lake equipment, but art pavilion wasn't good. Some bunks had bathrooms in which you could see earth through the floorboards. Very good range of activities, although every year a few of them never do anything when you go. $ value is decent enough. Main reason that I didn't like it was because of other campers. RID: 25160
Click to report rating    7/23/08   5     4     5     5     5   My son just completed his first year @ Silver Lake and he had the time of his life. He can't wait to go back. The counselors are wonderful and there is something for every type of kid. The camp is ran very well, every kid is well taken care of. My sone said the food was actually good. The boys bunks need a bit of updating. Just went for visting day and the smiles on all the kids faces says it all. I highly recommend this camp. RID: 25078
Click to report rating    7/14/08   1     3     3     3     3   I have to give this camp a poor rating on the camp based solely on the owner. I think the owner sets the tone of the camp and if they don't make the kid feel nurtured and cared for and build self esteem than the camp has failed. I would not recommend this camp to anyone, there are many wonderful camps out there. This is not one of them. RID: 24827
Click to report rating    6/27/08   3     5     4     5     5   I enjoy camp chipinaw very much. Although there are bunking issues, that is something we all can work past. I love the friends and memories I have made there, and I love the feeling of being apart of a camp that has such a great history. The only downside is that the food is bad; but that is what pasta and sandwiches are for. I love this camp! RID: 24351

Click to report rating    6/8/08   3     1     1     2     2   this camp has horrible facilites. people get so caught up and obsessed with Chipinaw that they think it is actually nice. the bunks are gross and you have to share a bathroom with another bunk. nothing is new and updated that it looks kinda run down. people need a wake up call and look at other camps and realize that their camp is ugly. People say its jappy but that might only be the people that go there. GO TO A CAMP WITH FACILITIES FROM THIS CENTURY RID: 23678

Click to report rating    3/27/08   1     3     3     1     1   I was a camper a few years ago. It surprises me that Cheryl is still a problem. You would think someone would at least talk to her after all the complaints. I'm a vegetarian and most days I at a peanut butter sandwhich for lunch and dinner because they couldn't accomodate. I was in a cabin with 5 girls and 2 counselors except one counselor packed up and left in a huff during the 2nd week and she was never replaced. Our other counselor could care less about us. The bunk o that was mentioned is when we stay in our bunks all day because of rain. Its fun for a day but my summer it rained a lot. I stayed on top of my summer reading list though. I broke my toe and the nurse refused to believe anything was wrong (this is where cheryl comes in) eventually they called my parents bc I refused to go to activities bc of my toe. When I got home I found out I had also fractured my foot bc I didn't take care of it when it was a smaller problem. RID: 21660

Click to report rating    2/17/08   1     1     1     1     1   i sent my son to chipinaw this past summer and i was disgusted by the way in which we were treated by the owners on visiting day. i went to go introduce myself and the owner just snubbed me. i did not pay $8000+ to be brushed off and for my child to be left to rot in a corner somewhere. my child's experience was so poor that i pulled him out of camp after only 5 out of the 7 weeks. he complained of poor food, drunken counselors stumbling into the bunk at 12, nasty headstaff, disgusting living conditions, and days of "bunk-o" (a so called activity where the kids skip their activities and stay in the bunk) for days on end. at first i brushed it off as just being a typical letter from a homesick child but after 4 or 5 of the same type of letter i was concerned. i called the camp and when i said i am calling in regards to my son _____ the secretary said "who?" i find that disgusting and i hope the camp is shut down so not another child will ever be abused like that ever again. a disgrace!! Click to report rating    8/4/07   5     5     5     5     5   As a parent of both Chipinaw camper and Silver Lake camper I can say it is an awesome place with options for the kid, like my son, who loves camp but only a few weeks, or the camper, like my daughter who cant get enuf and is already counting the days until summer '08. The staff at Silverlake, especially Robin Spencer, is caring, professional and 100% commited to the kids. After 4 years we are so glad we chose Chipinaw, it is well run, well staffed and while not perfect it is as close as you can get to perfection in an imperfect world! Chipinaw rox our sox! p.s. Chipinaw is an institution & if you personally allow one person to ruin an experience that is ultimately run by hundreds then you are the loser. I attended 2 sleep a way camps when I was growing up.  4/19/07   1     1     1     1     1   I am glad someone has finally targeted one of the real problems accurately in this camp-Cheryl. Cheryl, the head counselor, is the reason many of their campers do not come back to Chipinaw. She has little to do with the children but the worst part is that she is a cruel person who is unresponsive to the children’s needs. She has been known to ruin camper’s experiences at Chipinaw and they don’t return back. That is what happened to my child after 4 years. The worst part about it is that the owners do nothing about it. When they are informed by people, they look away. They support her at the camper’s expense. They leave Cheryl to remain as Head Counselor summer after summer and in turn, more and more campers who are away from home are made miserable.Buyer beware, love your kid. RID: 9869

I just found that funny, okay. So as VRV 07 color war general, and having completed my 6th summer (and yes, i will be back for a 7th), i would like to put it out there that "home" is a place where you feel the most comfortable. Chipinaw is where i get that feeling, and where i have for so long. Each winter i'm longing for summer. Every winter night i need the warm sunlight. CHipinaw is what i consider my home. Not my house, or my life in Riverdale... I'm on a ten month "vacation" when i'm away from camp. Not a day goes by when i don't think about camp. This camp can truly make all the thoughts of disaster in one's life fade away. SUmmer days may go away, but summer dreams are always here to stay with Chipinaw in my life. Isn't that what counts ? My boys are making friends and memories they will have forever. The owner spends a fortune every year to make the facilities better. The staff is amazing. They email me kids and stay in touch with them. From the office staff to the owner and interatcion i have had has been very professional. The facilities are good and get better every year. The new canteen and A&C buildings are a testimony to the owner spending oney on the camp. The activites are great, a very good mix of sports and non sporting events. personal attention is amazing I hear it and i have seen it. Click to report rating    8/28/06   3     4     4     2     3   Our daughter attending camp Chipinaw for 5 years. Nice camp for the first 4 years. She started at Chipinaw when she was 8yrs old. She will not go back again. The reason for this is simple. The owners have become fixated with money. The bunks are over crowded and hot. Five years ago there were less kids and more emphasis on the children. Now it is clearly only about money. After paying tuition they charge you for everything. Our daughter needed an antacid one night and we were charged $15 and $3 for each phone call home. We can certainly afford this however it is annoying. Our daughter was the one who told us she felt like no one cared about her. After the end of this season, we decided to speak to the owner about an incident. This is after getting nowhere with the head counselor. It was not a big deal and an “I’m sorry this happened” would have been enough. The owner was defensive and smug. We decided to listen to our daughter. Well, not all good things last. RID: 2525
