Our camper was placed in a cabin with two other new campers and 9 veteran campers. The veteran campers bullied the new campers including making up derogatory songs about them. The counselors who lived in the cabin and the directors of the camp took no action to stop the bullying.

I am a 3rd year camper and Camp Birchwood has been the highlight of my summer. Last year we did have a sort of bad experience with a counselor but luckily she was fired at the end of our session (I think). Even though I had one bad experience I am not discouraged and will continue to go to this camp as long as I can. It is really exciting to meet new people and learn new things. (And the food is wonderful??)

We are a second generation Birchwood family, and I am thrilled to say that Birchwood was my special place as a child and has become an incredibly important part of my daughter's life as well (she just finished her 4th summer there). It is really a special place, with as much ( if not more ) emphasis placed on developing kind, caring and mature girls and young women as there is on developing sailors, riders and archers. We are ever-grateful for having Birchwood in our lives and for the Bredemus family for keeping the magic going after all these years

I went to Camp Birchwood for 8 years- from age 9 to 16 and I can honestly say that it shaped my childhood and that they were the best months of my life. Seeing bad reviews about Camp Birchwood is truly heartbreaking because it is my favorite place in the world. I went there my first year alone not knowing anybody for 2 weeks. I made friends so quickly and within 4 days I was writing home to my mom asking if I could come for 4 weeks the next summer. I've made the best friends in the world with campers as well as counselors that I still keep in touch with years later. The counselors are fun and amazing role models for young girls, and the girls who go to Birchwood are accepting, caring and including. There are so many activities to choose from, but I personally got involved in shooting sports, something I had never done at age 9. Now at age 18 I still go to shooting ranges using the skills I learned at Birchwood, and nobody can believe an 18 year old girl can safely and accurately shoot

My daughter is still traumatized 3 yrs after spending 1 month here. Her counselor verbally abused her and shook her once. Her pleas to the director went unheard. I was told that this counselor would never do such things. I found out months later that this counselor was fired after my daughters session. We have spent thousands of dollars in therapy for our daughter. After her experience with this counselor and senior staff who wouldn't listen to her, she has very trust in authority figures to keep her safe. The cherry on the cake is that we had to hear through the grapevine that this counselor was fired....it would have been nice to hear from the directors.

I went to this camp for five years, and it was the best experience of my life so far. Before I went, I was so shy and insecure. After my first year, I was a completely different person. The girls I met here are some of the best people I have ever met. It is a safe place for a girl to be her true self. The counselors are so much fun and caring. I've never met a counselor I didn't like. Terry and Rachel, the directors, are absolutely fantastic. They know all the girls' names and are so friendly to everyone. All of the facilities (except the showers. Those aren't so hot, but they could definitely be worse, and they improve slightly every year) are great. I love the activities; horseback riding is my favorite. It is worth every penny. A few words of wisdom: Try every activity at least once. Earning a banquet award feels great, so work for it. If you go riding, Oliver is the best horse EVER! Blue Heron, Outpost, and Inn are the best cabins. And most of all, enjoy every minute and have fun!

I've only been for family camp, but have sister who was a loyal camper and staff member. Great culture. Facilities were very good, too.
