We sent 11 kids to Camp Vacamas away, the first group of 5 went to the 10-day camp. The two little girls out of 5 loved it and wanted to return. The second group of 6 were all boys and some liked it more than others. Overall, I think the kids benefited, matured. My personal feelings about the Leadership is not so good. For the 10-day camp, we were given access to all of our campers photos, for the 19-day camp, the "rules" had changed and we were shut out. One of the boys returned with clothing that he never owned. The mom reported it and the Camp has failed to respond. I will be replacing the boy's clothes. I think the camp has a spider issue in one of the cabins, noted. Otherwise, the kids did well and were energized, I believe the camp has good activities with nice counselors.

I sent my son to this camp last year. There were not many planned activities. He came home with a lot more language and information than he went there with, I didn't appreciate that although I know it's difficult to control what kids talk about. The part he disliked the most was being forced to go swimming every morning. He did not want to go back this year. In addition, I called to see how he was doing and sometimes the camp wouldn't call me back.

Older style buildings, which isn't a big deal, but I found it odd when our campers commented the counselors cried themselves to sleep. On investigation, they are kept up working days at a time with horrible hours and have very few breaks (and several are international students). Unfortunate.

My kids attended for the first time last summer (2012). They had a blast and are looking forward to going again this summer. The away camp is about 18 days and the price is more than fair. The kids spend their time in social activities as electronics are not permitted. You cannot speak with them, so families are encouraged to write their camper. The counselors are fairly young and many are from abroad. My son came home with a British accent. Too funny. Campers are expected to be independent and are responsible for their personal needs including keeping track of their clothing after laundry day. I didn't get the feeling that the campers are coddled in any way.

My son just got back from this camp yesterday. It was his first sleep away camp, and boy did he love it! He stayed about 18 days and he was in a big daydream when he got back home. He was thinking about, then talking about all the activities that he did :-D He's my only child so it can get pretty boring at home sometimes (even when I try to do & find activities for him on the weekend-during the school year(he's 11 years old-12 in 3 months). I know that he can't Wait to go back next summer! I was happy with the payment plan they were able to work out with me, and thrilled about the happiness that my son has expressed about his trip!

I was both a camper and a staff member at vacamas from about 1989 to about 1999. I love Vacamas and will never forget it. Its a wonderful place.

I went there from the late 60's to the early 70's, It helped shape my life and I will never forget the wonderful times I had there!!
