Click to report rating    7/6/22   1     2     4     3     2   For the kids it seemed like a decent camp, but definitely overpriced. For the counselors it was horrible, do not work here. The management has zero empathy for its counselors and overworks them for little pay. The only upside of working here is the friendships you make with the other counselors which stems from the mutual suffering endured. Find another camp to work at. RID: 53564

Click to report rating    8/19/12   5     4     4     5     5   My 3 kids ages 12, 11 & 7 attended Brookwood Camps this summer, 2012. It was their 1st sleepaway camp experience & all I can say is that they are already counting the days until they can return again. It was truley an expeience of a lifetime filled with new friends, endless activities and memories made that will last a LIFETIME! In the week that they have been home the have NOT stopped singing the many songs that they learned and I am having a ball learning all of them....Brookwood is traditional sleepaway camp at its best!  8/11/11   1     1     1     1     1   I was hired to teach arts & crafts, only to find out I would be weeding 4 baseball fields with my bare hands. Then made to carry huge bags, metal beds and metal boats across camp(the camp is a huge up hill layout). Then we had to clean the entire camp. The children have no repercussions for bad behavior. Waiters and teens beat kids and curse out councilors. Then once all of that was over, the owners of the camp would make us wait 2 to 3 hours for lectures that's dragged on. If we didn't want to they would threaten us with future job calls, fire us with no pay, or even take away our days and nights off. I was fired a week before camp ended, because a child whom was almost downed, scratched, punched and beaten in their "Olympic" pool wanted to call his mother and they wouldn't let him. I Snuck my cell in to let him call.Later they told a family friend they fired me for telling 8yr old kids about sex. Which is disgusting and untrue. Also canteen and trip money is a scam. RID: 36684

11/20/09   5     4     5     5     4   My daughter has had a possitive experience at Brookwood Camps from day 1. She looks forward to going back each summer and the memories and friendships she has made will last a lifetime. The directors know each child by name and really try to make their summers a possitive learning experience. Yes the facilities were a little run down when we began there, but over the last 5 years there have been major improvements. The grounds the camp is located on can not be matched by any camp I have ever seen. My daughter can not wait to go back again this summer and I know that I can rest easy knowing that she is well cared for during her time away. RID: 31590

11/19/09   5     5     5     5     5   This is in rebuttal for the review a few down from this. The person who wrote this is most likely the staff/parent who was asked to leave camp. She was unable to adapt to staff policies. She followed her kids around daily. I am a Staff/Parent who has witnessed her lack of boundaries. Brookwood is not corp owned and the owners are on hand 24/7. There is clear leadership demonstrated. The head counselors have been there for almost 30 years combined. There is a large repeat staff. New improvements include the indoor facility/dance studio, beautiful pool with water slides, the Health Ctr which is fully staffed with Dr/Nurses at all times. Brookwood emphasizes sports, other activities are offered based on the expertise of current staff. The kitchen prepares well balanced, tasty meals. Fresh fruits are provided. There are vending machines stocked with water, gatorade and soda. The Red Cross visited this summer and was extremely impressed with the level of safety and waterfront faciliti RID: 31586

11/13/09   5     5     5     5     5   I was a JC at Brookwood in the '80's. It was the best summer of my life. When I finally got the chance to work at camp the only one I could think about spending the summer was Brookwood. My kids moved to this camp and it exceeded their expectations. The sports was amazing, the care and attention given to my children was incredible. The food was wonderful. The staff loving. I myself met wonderful friends who I speak with daily and miss hourly. Kenny, Donna and Scott run this camp as a camp should be run. It is run by family and every person staff or camper is treated as such. It may not be as fancy as other camps but it has more in ways that cannot be priced. When my children get older they will remember the friends they made, the great times they shared and the memories that will never been forgotten. That is the true meaning of summer camp. Thank you to the Fiedlers for all the lives they have touched and enriched. RID: 31558

7/31/09   5     4     4     1     1   well, where to start... i worked at brookwood in the summer of '08, loved the camp and especially the friendships i had made. more than the counselors, the kids were awesome. brats at some times, but thats kids and something you have to understand when signing the contract. with that said, the ownership is very poor. not only was i fired on false pretensions, but had my character attacked for no reason. wasnt paid, and dropped off with no money at a bus station after being withheld from eating dinner. the accusations were so harsh and disgusting that im embarrassed to talk to the friends that i made there. not only did i not do any of the things i was falsely accused of, i wasnt even allowed to plead my case, just kicked out and left like an animal in a place i had never been with no phone and not a dime in my pocket. and mr feidler knew it also. horrible, horrible person and should really be considered to not be allowed around young children with morals like that.  7/6/09   5     5     5     5     5   As a parent, I had seen Brookwood before. This time I must commend them for having the experience and expertise to "fix" what a "corporate" camp couldn't address in my child. Family owned camps deliver the attention that parents demand. Brookwood in NY has brand new health center with private exam rooms, the best new outdoor pool that I have ever seen at a NY camp, an incredible hardball field that was clear amid the year's worst rainstorms and the sparkling new dance hall. Thumbs up for all. RID: 30333

6/14/09   5     5     5     5     5   Except for one complaint the bad reviews sold me on the camp. Most camps have the counselers unpack for the kids. They also have the counselers load the kids suit case in the car when they leave. YMCA kids arn't rich spoiled kids is why. I don't agree with the policy, that being said, quit whining, one bad and i might add standard policy does not make a whole camp bad. For those who agree with the policy, I think it does undermine building a campers character. That being said, WHATEVER!!! RID: 30050

2/2/09   2     1     2     1     2   wow this camp is so bad the female group leader/head person/whatever is soo rude to the counselors one time she berated me in front of my girl campers for no reason. i definitely agree that the owners do not back the counselors like one person said below. i wish they had had all the "i hate brookwood/don't work at brookwood/i survived brookwood camp" facebook groups to warn me when i worked there.if you are a prospective counselor you really need to check the testimonials of the former counselors because they will tell you the truth.most of these ratings are from brookwood ownership.you can tell RID: 28800

1/27/09   5     5     5     5     5   I worked at Brookwood this past summer and can honestly say that it was the most rewarding experience of my life! The kids are amazing, the staff is great, and overall Brookwood is one of the most open and diverse camps. I still talk to a lot of the counselors and camperes, and I can guarantee these are lasting friendships. Brookwood is a great place, and if you send your children here or decide to work here it will be a great experience. RID: 28741

1/19/09   4     4     4     5     5   I have attended brookwood as a camper as well as a counselor. I went as a camper for 3 summers and just recently as a couselor. I've had experiences both good and bad, which comes with any camp. But I wouldn't change a thing between the arguments, sometimes tedious night activities and the fun times at night and the amazing friends I made in both campers and counselors. Each summer I attended, I grew as a person, learning about other people and my self. I had a lot of new experiences and grown as an athlete too. I loved the combination of both artistic and physical talent during color compeetitions. All the injuries and hard work during sports competitions was well worth it as well. Like any camp, you either hate it or love it. Though every camp has its downside, I can never forget the friends I've made and the experiences I've shared. As for the camp itself, the Fiedlers have have numerous renovations to the camp in the past years, including a new pool and an all purpose studio. RID: 28663
1/8/09   2     1     2     3     1   I have read several comments about "lazy college students who have no idea what its like to be at camp" giving bad ratings. I worked at Brookwood for a summer AFTER working for several years at a YMCA run camp. Not only do I feel that the camp treated the staff badly (we were required to unpack our campers things for them before they arrived) but I also feel the facilities are lacking. I was hired to teach a drama course at the camp and was told I would be working with "state of the art" and "brand new" equipment. Instead I was faced with a splintered wooden outdoor stage on which I was supposed to direct a musical(dancing on splintered wood is not a good idea)and a sound system that could not be heard if you were more than a foot away from the speakers. We were also not given ample time on our nights off to make it into the nearest town to replenish our necessary supplies(ie Rx)only to get to the local bar after which drunk underage counselors were allowed to return to their campers RID: 28490
Click to report rating    1/3/09   3     2     3     1     1   This camp is definintely a case of "buyer beware". When The Fiedlers say that they treat staff members like family, they neglect to mention that what they actually mean is "We've got a few people who are in charge and will be treated well. The rest of you mean nothing to us." If you want to send your children there, that's your business, and not mine to tell you. What I want to do is warn potential staff members. There are better options out there than this place. The management is where this camp really goes downhill. The Fiedlers know how to get what they want, and they will get it. One of the most disconcerting practices of this camp is the way they subvert the authority of the counselors. If you tell a child not to do something, ths child gives you a hard time, and a Fiedler sees it, they will often intervene and give the child what he/she wants, making the counselor look bad in eyes of the camper. A counselor should be able to be in control. Beware their payroll "deductions" too! RID: 28311
Click to report rating    1/2/09   5     5     5     5     5   Had to finally write after reading all of the ridiculous posts by obviously former disgruntled counselors, even one that waited 20 years supposedly. I have been working for the Fiedler's for 20 years now and they are wonderful people both to campers, parents and staff members who do their jobs. I started as a general counselor and have worked my way up the ranks over the last 20 years. When Scott joined the camp about 10 years ago the warmth and family feeling got even better he treats everyone great. The rest of the Fiedlers have always treated everyone like family and once again there are a million staff members who loved their time working for these wonderful people they just don't write about it like i didn't until now. Also know that several of the bad post were by the same people over and over again. If you want to send your child to a camp or want to work at one and be part of a thing bigger than yourself join the BROOKWOOD FAMILY, you won't regret it. RID: 28289
Click to report rating    12/24/08   5     4     4     5     5   I have been going to this camp since I was 6, coming back it will be my eight year. Yes the Fielder family can be cheap and stingy, and yes we do watch Lakonda's fireworks on the 4th of July but the kids who come back don't come for the sports, they go for their friends. The counsleurs sometimes are bad like Doerflinger but mostly they are amazing (Willie) If your social then go to Brookwood, if your not NEVER GO RID: 28143
Click to report rating    12/20/08   5     5     5     5     5   Brookwood is a great camp. I have been a parent for several years and am tired of all of these first time or disgruntled counselors bad mouthing a terrific camp. The firewood pick up is for rope burning during color war which i believe just about every camp in the northeast does. Obviously if these counselors went to camp before they would know that. We send our children to Brookwood because it is well run and the Fiedler's are on top of everything that goes on at camp!! RID: 28101

9/19/08   5     4     5     5     5   Most of the bad reviews seem to come from counselors who are lazy college students just looking to screw off for 2 months. They come and go every summer and all they care about is their nights out and getting over on the Head Counselors. FYI - Camp isn't for you. It is for my kids and all the kids in camp. If you want to be lazy and do nothing... Stay home - PLEASE! There are some great staff members that have been back year after year and do a great job. Every year my kids have been there, the owners have put money into a new upgrade. The pool is one of the nicest in the camping industry. My son is only 10 and has been there 4 years and can't wait to go back. As far as the "canteen money" is concerned... It is not for buying items in the canteen only! It is for the rental of buses for special events and trips. It is for drivers, gas and vehicles to transport the kids to intercamps and tournaments (has anyone checked the price of gas lately?!) and (also) it is for canteen. RID: 26608

Click to report rating    8/29/08   4     4     4     5     3   I am a camper at brookwood camps and I love it there, and for all you counselors complaining you didn't get paid when you got fired, you dont deserve to. its in your contract too. dont sign before you read! and the reason some/most of you got fired was because you came back drunk or did multiple things you f'ed up on. i have no respect for counselors who come back drunk form their night out, its selfish and could danger campers. brookwood is a family camp we are all friends, the courts/fields/pools are all great and if not there getting fixed. we have a new gorgeous pool and an in door facilitie where we all can fit. I do agree that kenny and scotty do need to treat there staff better and give them what they promised but not every camp is perfect, the kids and counselors usually get along great and if there is ever a problem ellen, jason, and the owners try their best to make you feel comfortable, if your looking for a camp brookwood is really the place to be. love it or hate it bwc ro RID: 26189
Click to report rating    8/26/08   3     2     2     2     1   The camp is good but the owners are very cheap and then complain about every little thing. If you go to the camp bring alot of your own food because the food at the camp is terrible and gives everyperson stomach aches. The staff are nice but the owners are NOT and they are very cheap so they try evry way to make money off of you. The rooms are small and they are uncomfortable. RID: 26115
Click to report rating    8/15/08   3     1     1     5     1   i was a former camper here for two years and my second year was a completely terorizing visit i slightly mis behaved and the owners feel that they know all so the moved me up in an age devison and gave the older kids promission to beat on me i-e during footbal i would be tackled when not carrying the ball and when i addresed this with the boys head counslour he told me to man up . after being harrased and assulted for over a week i was yet again moved bunks although back to my normal age devision i was moved to a bunk away from my friends. each time someone acts up at this camp the feidlers take it way out of proportion and make the campers either sit out in a feild at night when other campers are at canten or they make campers miss events such as carnival or a disco to pick up trash. the owners are very cheap people they make teens pay to work for them kenny makes a waiter pay multiple thousands of dollars just to work everyday and get a small amount of tips. i'd rather die then visit RID: 25704

7/14/08   4     4     4     4     4   It's not perfect, but Brookwood was a great place to work. What most fist year counselor often don't understand is that you are there to make the summer great for the KIDS, not for yourself. It's hard work, but if you concentrate on them you're going to have a great summer. I love my campers and them telling me at the end of the summer that they really liked having me as a counselor was the best tip I could get. I was only able to work one year and was sad I was unable to return. The kids always seem to have a good time and leave at the end of the summer with great memories. RID: 24831

6/25/08   2     1     1     1     1   Hi, former camper here. I did not have a very good expirence at this camp. Most of the kids were unpleasant characters who obviously lacked respect for authority. (This is the only place in the world I've heard a nine year old tell an adult to f*** off without any correction on a regular basis.) The facilitlies were not maintained well and the activities were not as advertised on the Brookwood website. Most of our activities were repetitive. I can also tell you about the staff. Almost all of the staff was miserable and swore that they would never come back to camp. Many of them were home sick and overworked, therefore they could not provide the personal attention that many of us, especially the little kids, needed. The staff in my bunk behaved a lot like children. Parents can call campers (but camper's end of the conversation is monitered by a senior staff member.) Children can not call parents. This is all a shame because if things were a bit different, the camp could be really nice. RID: 24243

Click to report rating    5/17/08   5     3     2     1     1   The campers are GREAT and I will miss them horribly but the upper staff treat the counselors like crap. We don't get out on time on our days and nights off and there's just a lot of behind the scenes things that parents and campers don't know about. RID: 23211

5/6/08   3     1     1     3     1   I had the most depressing time of my life as a counselor at Brookwood Camp. The positive ratings are definitely fake. I can imagine Ellen or the Fiedlers just sitting at their computers adding in a positive rating for every negative one that is submitted. When I was there, I only really remember 1 getting fired, the rest all quit because the owners treat the staff so terribly bad. When counselor's quit, the fiedlers don't need to pay us. Right before parents day, they called a camp counselor meeting at 10/11pm at night and threatened us to behave while the parents are there or else. Basically Ken Fiedler threatened us by saying "I have your social security number so if you ever want a job after this one, do not screw up because I have the power to tell your future employer that you were a bad worker." RID: 22974
Click to report rating    4/25/08   5     4     3     5     3   BWC is a great place. The website may list activities that don't exist but its not the "olympic size pool" or "rock climbing" that would determine the quality of your summer. My older bro first attended bwc in 97 when it was completely run down and had the time of his life. I attended bwc as a camper for the past 7 years and had loved every minute of it, as I met my best friends there. This is definately not a camp filled with spoiled, rich kids. This camp is filled with genuine, down to earth people that become your friends for a lifetime. I still speak to my friends that i met 7 years ago, almost every day. And i still speak to counselors that i became close to.You'll enjoy it if you can give it a chance, see past the not so amazing facilities and the money hungry owner, and realize that its about the friends you meet and the memories u make there. ur kid wnt remember how many sq feet the pool was but theyll remember how sad it was on the last day saying goodbye to 300 amazing people. Click to report rating    1/20/08   4     1     1     1     1   DO NOT WORK HERE! When I first spoke to Kenny, he made it sound like a very nice place. However, things went downhill from the moment I arrived. To start off, I was left at the bus station for 4 hrs in the dark by myself. Then, when I get to camp the facilities are old and delapedated. The kids were absolutly horrible, and no punishment is ever administered. (except to the counselors) 99% of the activites and facilities that were claimed to exist were no where to be found. One good example would be the so called golf range. If you can call an empty feild in the forest with rusted out clubs from the 50's that. The guy I worked with was suposed to be a golf instructor but he was only allowed to teach the sport maybe 10 times throughout the summer, and when he did it was impossisble becasue of the equiptment. PLEASE PLEASE! take my advice and don't work here or send your kids here. You will have the worst and most depressing summer of your life! RID: 19199
Click to report rating    1/20/08   4     4     4     5     4   I was a counselor at Brookwood last year and will be returning for another summer. Half of the stuff people are saying is false. The only counselors that are in highschool are previous campers who have been in the Brookwood system for years, there is only a handful of these counselors and they are all surrounded by older counselors. The food and water is not awful and I have never seen it make anyone sick. There are 6 different activities everyday for each division, since each division is doing so much in one day, there is no doubt that a kid may be playing soccer two days in a row, but this doesn't mean they are doing the same exact activities day in and day out. Yes, counselors do get fired, but this when they do things that deserve firing (drink, name call the children, smoke on grounds) I do not know any camp that would allow these things to happen. The only staff that does not receive their full pay are the ones who get fired. The facilities are fine! I love my campers and bwc RID: 19190

10/3/07   3     2     2     2     1   this camp is pocketing all your money. i've seen other $8000 camps in the area and they have much nicer facilities.other camps have real gymastics and exercise equipment, not sad excuse of the tin can.the water tastes like it's filled with chlorine, and the kids refused to drink it because it gave them stomachahes.the only nice things about brookwood is the new pool but believe me, there are many camps in NY that have nice pools and it didn't take them till 2007 to start spending some money to make one. other camps have let the kids try different activities and have many options including rock walls, and rope courses but all my kids did was play nukem and basketball everyday. they never got to try archery, flag football, and they played golf and went waterskiing twice.i've seen some pretty bad camps before, but brookwood is one the cheapest, and most disgusting. SEND YOUR KIDS SOMEWHERE ELSE! if your going to pay the money, you might as well actually get a nice camp out of it RID: 15787

9/6/07   5     4     5     5     5   As a counselor for my first time this year, I feel as if I had the best experience! I loved the kids, the camp, and the owners. It really does feel like a second home when you are away from yours for so long. I feel that the owners are great people who always put the CHILDREN first in every circumstance. I am so glad that I got the chance to come here and will be here for a quite a few years after this year. I love the kids so much and they are a big reason i loved camp so much! I would suggest to send your kids here because it is a great place!!! RID: 14957

8/11/07   3     1     1     1     1   I sent my children to this camp THINKING that they would get to try a variety of activities, but I was told by all of them that they did the same activities everyday. I was told they would have private instructon, which they did not. I was charged about $70 for each of my children to go a trip, that consisted of riding a bus for over an hour, to bowl for an hour, then ride the bus back. My youngest son (7) was kept up until at least 11 p.m. every night. The building looks like they are goping to fall off their supports. The only thing I can say was good about their experience was that my daughter had a group leader who was roughly my age(45), and was very nurturing and attentive to my daughter and the girls in her division. She would sneak food to all the girls, (including counselors who were high school students) when they were starving, which was almost every night. The dining floors were never mopped, and the bathrooms were only cleaned prior to parents day. owners were nasty 2 kids RID: 13853
Click to report rating    7/24/07   1     3     1     1     1   I personally witnessed a camp counselor belittle a child at a basketball tournament against other camps. He told the kid he was not playing good enough and he would end up being like Adam Sandler in Waterboy. This was so disturbing to see because I think the counselor was one of the parents at the camp. They also supply their own refs for tournament games and the refs make lousy calls and don't keep time well. If they are mainly a sports camp then what they are teaching is how to cheat in a game. Sad, really sad. RID: 13251
Click to report rating    7/19/07   5     4     5     5     5   This is my son's first year at Brookwood and he is having the time of his life. He made friends easily and loves his counselors. The athletic instruction in all areas are superior to those at other camps. These are professional qualified instructors, not parents working at camp because their kids go to camp for free. There may not be zip line and go carts but what they have is quality supervision and instruction. The lakefront is beautiful and the new pool looks great. RID: 13125

7/9/07   2     2     2     1     1   The ultimate rich kids camp. But the facilities are lame for the money. Lots of spoiled kids from NY and Fla. Look elsewhere! RID: 12841
Click to report rating    7/8/07   5     5     5     5     5   I am shocked to see some of the negative postings. Sour grapes... I guess. The Camp has come a long way since the owners from Lenni-len-a-pe took over a completely delapidated camp. Each year they make more and more improvements. I have know the Fiedlers for a long time and they are very demanding of the counselors and many of them don't like it. However, as a parent, I appreciate the fact that they are in complete and total control of the staff. Being responsible for 300 children is no easy task. The girls side leaders are nuturing and fun. My daughter loved being a camper there for 5 years. My son has been in the boys youngest division since he was 7 and has a great time. The instruction he receives in all sports in unparalled and they camp has dominated athletic intercamp activities since the 80s. The new acquatic center will be one of the greatest facilites amongst all summer camps. I would stronlgy recommend visiting the camp to see how wonderful and scenic it is. RID: 12812

Click to report rating    5/12/07   5     5     5     5     5   I don't know what the previous posters are talking about, i have been a counselor at this camp for 20 years. I started as a general counselor and have moved up the ranks to be a group leader. The directors even helped me get a full time teaching job with the New York City board of ed. If you do your job and watch the children you will have a blast working here. Being a camp counselor is a job and as long as you understand this and that the children come first you will also have the best summer of your life. Like me there are many staff members that come back year after year at Brookwood and i would recommend working or sending your children to this amazing place. RID: 10753

Click to report rating    3/22/07   5     5     5     5     5   Brookwood Camps is a great summer camp experience for my children. One is a camper and the other one is on staff. They both love it and think Brookwood is their second home. We do too. Send your kids here and have peace of mind that the directors will know everything that is going on and will do what they say they will do. Can't wait to see the new pool being built for 2007 summer. Head staff returns every year and is GREAT! RID: 8863
3/19/07   4     1     2     3     2   The facilities are so horrible that I cried when I first arrived. The campers all love it so much becuase they basically go and get spoiled for two months. I loved the girls I worked with, but I would NEVER recommend working there, even the nursing staff and visiting doctors complained. Parents, as for sending your child there, I would first consider other places because 1. a 9 year old girl learned the definition of a "****" 2. a 12 year old boy brought condoms to camp, 3. the owners threatened counselors and made them do custodial work- ie. unhappy counselors= bad... etc etc... As far as working here- DO NOT DO IT! It's prison. The counselors from camp Lakonda across the lake all feel sorry for Brookood counselors because you will be treated like a slave- like down on hands and knees doing yard work and scrubbing slime off their boats... nothing is appreciated... even the best counselors were yelled at to tears. The campers are cute because they are children, but it's not worth i RID: 8787
Click to report rating    3/14/07   3     4     4     5     5   i love this camp! sometimes the conselours aren't so entusiastic and take it out on campers (like me) and that sucks. other than that the camp is pretty cool...they really need to lay back a little cause although their personal attention is good..it's a little much for the upper camp. my friends are amazing brookwood is my second home and second family love the heads and everybody come here or u'll be sry!!!!
