Has potential but expensive camp that hires teenagers to work with your kids and supervision is bad. Constant change of directors and staff is not a good sign. Has some good people but poorly run

LUHI Summer Camp from HELL. A bully kid attacks my son, flips him by the feet and causes my son to fall head back and blackout. What next? No one besides other kids was even there to see what happened. Zero supervision, zero counselors. After a 2-3 min blackout, my son lifted himself up and sought help from kids. Camp called me and casually told me my son fell and has a headache. While I was on my way to get him, they called me again and told me he threw up twice. I told them it's still going to take me at least 20 mins to get there so they need to rush him to the ER by ambulance. At the ER, we were told he had a concussion. Half the kids confirmed that my son was "FLIPPED" by an aggressive known bully who has a history of aggressive behavior. Posting it here to let other parents with children at LUHI aware that there's almost no supervision there and you're sending your child there at your own risk. We are thanking our lucky stars our son is alive

The facts. The councilors are young teenagers, and don't pay attention, so your kids can be bullied, intimidated and mistreated without the directors knowledge. They handle situations poorly, reactive rather than well thought out. So expect lots of apologies and little action when you complain. Do NOT send your kid here if he/she is alone, and not part of a supportive group of friends.

I am rating the BROOKVILLE campus. My 8 year old daughter did 'Here's to Me' (highly recommend) and 'Funtastics.' My 9 year old son did Basketball (highly recommend) and Adv. Rookies. All were excellent programs, which my kids LOVED. They have been to several of the other day camps in Melville and one of the sports camps in Old Westbury and liked LuHi the best.

Reviews shouldn't be written by campers! Not realistic or practical, totally biased. My son has gone this summer for basketball. He doesn't offer praise to himself or anyone unless it is over the top. Pros, he had a "coach' AS he insisted on referring to him, that inspired him, challenged him and def. made him a more skilled, confident defender. The cons are the transportation. Everything about it, 2 hr mis mapped rides too spread out, clueless bus driver in a SMALL van size bus witnessed and ignored a fight inc. punching in the faces and bleeding. When the bus broke down NO ONE CALLED MY HOUSE. The camp office person after 1st hr late, said I SHOULD CALL THE BUS COMPANY!

I absolutely love LuHi. Ive gone here for 8 years and i look forward to it every year. The staff is great, the sports are intense and competitive, especially in the GIFT program.Team Handball and Gaga Pit are undoubtedly the most fun i have ever had playing sports. Its a great place to be and well worth the money.

The drop off and pick up procedure for those using car transportation is TORTUROUS. The staffers are RUDE! I noticed of the junior counselors were more focused on text messages. They should not be allowed to carry phones while on duty! The most DISTURBING aspect is the end of the day when nearly every camper goes to the canteen and gorges themselves on at least 500 - 1000 calories in snacks, candy, and junk. Most parents have mo clue as majority of kids go home via bus. My son attended the fishing camp. They do not stress the importance of boater safety. The boys were somewhat rambunctious and during a canoe trip (with three to a canoe), the unruly boys caused canoe to flip. The positives are the daily field trips for fishing at ether lakes, ponds, or the ocean. With a closer monitoring of the campers, I would give a better rating. It was our first experience with LuHi-not a positive one.

Not what we expected or we're told when we registered. A lot of kids and not a lot of adults to coach the sports. My kids thought it was OK but won't be going back

Seems like there was a new staff in place. There were many different activities that were never offered before. My 2 children really enjoyed themselves in Funtastics, Rookie and Gift.

I went here for 2 sessions. Horseback riding was pretty good. Loved the horses, and I learned a lot and made new friends!! But CHEERLEADING STAY AWAY FROM!! I had such a terrible time there!! All of the girls were stuck up and mean! I was a flier in the pyramid, but the counselor decided to ignore me in total and give MY part to the star of the camp!! It was humiliating because in the parent show, I was just standing there while she did her AND my part!!!! The counselor didn't do anything, even when I told him, and already told us before that you can only be a flier once!! I was humiliated, and doing nothing! Also, the programs NEED more of a variety! Same ones every year with the exception of one or two boring ones added this year. The facilities are fine, the food is better than your average camp food UNLESS you do tennis! YUCK stay away from those cold sandwiches and chips! The counselors pick favorites. Terrible experience. Go spend your money somewhere else.

This camp was great the first time!I did horsebackriding and cheerleading. When I went the next year though I saw the programs didn't change much and I was getting tired of doing the same things. The staff will help you if you ask for it, but they rarely give u any PERSONAL attention! Most of the counslers play favorites.I remember in cheerleading I was supposed to be the second flier in the pyramid we made. Instead he chose my partner who he favorited to fly BOTH times! The facilities were okay with dirt on the floor and bees flying around your head. The wait for the buses it****NDOUS!ALL of the children are forced to jam pack next to each other like sardines. The worse part is that you have to wait in the boiling sun for about half an hour for the buses to come! Some buses have no air conditioning at all so your stuck in a sweaty bus for like an hour depending on how far you like from the campus.Overall, this camp is just fair.If they made some major improvements, that would be better!

My kids both went this summer fo rthe first time. MY 8 y.o. daughter loved it and she is not easy to please. Great activities, lovely campus, great counselors for her. My 7 y.o. son took longer to warm up to it. His counselors were all male (late teens I think) and I got the feeling they were not as attentive as the girls in terms of making sure all new campers felt comfortable. The great activities (woodshop, LAX, swimming) won him over though. They both want to go back next year.

For me I loved it I met great people, the counselors were really awesome, and the room was air conditioned. LuHi has different activities, you have to choose the right ones. For instance Rec or Gift I would not reccomend. Its ordinary camp w/ no air conditionning. Sports, cheerleading, dance, theatre there all good. just depends on what u choose.

this camp was alright. i did horsebackriding and it was ok. we went there on a bus and arrived at a school. we sat in a hallway with other people for about 20 mins. until we went to cw post. the horses were pretty cool. we got to ride and brush and bathe the horses. we came back and could either go swiming or buy snack this part the counslers just let you go anywhere they probably wouldent have noticed it you jumped a fence and ran away!

Luhi overall is a decent camp. I have had mixed experiences at it, but basketball is usually fun, and the competition is good.

im in my second week of dance camp right know. the staff is great, they are really fun to be around. we play lots of games and learn really great dances. the teachers are nice unless you talk too much or are not listening. if you dont understand something they'll take you aside and break it down for you. and im having a good time with new friends and its been really fun.

not recommended - my son went there and had a terrible time - the counselors showed no interest in campers. I picked him up on a rainy day and kids were running around room like lunatics while counselor was working on his laptop. Stay away.

i went here for a year and i did the rec program and i hated it. it wasnt airconditioned i knew nobody and the counselers would have favorite campers. the trips werent fun because they were mostly local places i had already been to. i think i only didnt like this camp because i had choosen the wrong program maybe cheerleading or other sports are more interesting...i really never gave it a second summer.
