7/28/18   1     1     1     1     1   This camp is so bad, it is absolutely shocking.? I sent my child here in hopes they would have a good time, make friends, and improve their boring summer sitting around.? I was shocked when I picked my child up, as he was crying and saying that he had the worst time of his life.? The camp is a pure money driven business, so stay away and sent your child somewhere nicer.? RID: 52101
Click to report rating    5/12/18   2     3     3     1     1   I am very very upset with this camp right now. I wished I had never gotten involved with the. My child was recently diagnosed with an illness that will will prevent her from going to camp this summer. When I had called, they said they are sorry to hear but we are past the refund date. Shameful. RID: 51824

7/18/17   1     2     1     1     1   If you want to overpay for your child to attend a third-rate, poorly-run camp in Westchester, then Mohawk is the place for you. Notice that the glowing reviews for this camp are mostly older reviews. The reason for this is that a new owner/director joined in 2015, and the camp has been in a downward spiral ever since. The transportation department is a complete disaster. Yesterday, they forgot to pick my child up for camp! Also, in spite of having been in the camp business for many years, they haven't figured out the concept of rush hour (if you live in Manhattan, you should expect your child to routinely miss his/her first activity). Communication is virtually nonexistent. For months, they could not seem to figure out how to add my email/physical address to their database, which meant I didn't receive important communications from them (and my child missed camp events as a result). There are so many well-run camps in the area--don't waste your money at this one. RID: 51054

4/18/16   2     4     5     4     1   i agree with the negative reviews...i truly think that parents do not how money driven this camp is. everything is shielded from the parents...sadly the younger kids are marched over a huge campus, walking miles a day. the food that they serve is not up to par...barely any dairy or substantial snacks...most of the snacks were either a single piece of fruit or a small bag of white pretzels (which is not sufficient given the amount of walking and physical activity required at camp). also rules and staff expectations were unclear. i was really disappointed at how the kids were treated and how unacceptable food choices were for the children. i think parents would be shocked at what a real day at camp mohawk entails, especially given all of the money they are spending :-( in addition, staff are not treated well, often people are hired for one position and at the last minute they were reassigned without explanation. staff training was irrelevant and and did not address real issues that RID: 49540
Click to report rating    8/6/15   1     4     2     1     1   I worked at this camp this summer (2015) and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. They treat the staff like**** and everyone is stressed out, underpaid, and unhappy. The victim of all of this in the end ...is the children as they are not getting what they deserve which is a well trained staff...and an experience worth the crazy amount of money spent at this camp. Your getting ripped off and everyone who works there is too. They put on a great show but believe me when I say it is all smoke and mirrors. THIS CAMP SUCKS!!!! Save your money and go to a YMCA or sleep away camp ...they will get just as much out of it ... probably a whole lot more... how this place has been in business for 80 years is beyond comprehension. I am surprised all the lawsuits filed by parents. and staff has not bankrupt them. Lots of money and lots of greed at this camp not a whole lot of love. Save your kids. Save your money. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! RID: 49019
Click to report rating    1/13/15   5     5     5     5     5   My child had an incredible summer at Mohawk. The grounds are gorgeous and the facilities are state of the art -- super safe and up to date. The range of activities is amazing (zip lines, climbing structures, cycle tracks, mini golf, gaga, water slides, a farm, etc. as well as all of the usual camp sports and activities) and the special events and theme days are so creative and super fun for the kids. From the bus counselor to the swim instructor to the general counselors, the staff were amazing -- well trained, organized, enthusiastic, attentive. I checked in a few times and got a call back quickly from the head counselor who clearly knew my child well. The camp is not cheap but comparable to other day camps with similar amenities. Plus Mohawk has plenty of extras that were included in the cost, including daily towel service, online pictures of the kids at camp each day, etc. I don't know what the negative reviews were about from years ago. It is an amazing place! RID: 48288
Click to report rating    8/6/14   5     5     5     5     5   I have been going to Tawingo since I was 8 years old and it has been my summer home. I love everything about it, the staff, facilities, activities, friends ,and the food is amazing. BEST CAMP EVER. You will not be disappointed! RID: 47801
6/9/14   2     4     3     3     1   I worked at this camp for several years as a head specialist running activities, and I'd urge parents to find another camp for their children. I've seen personally how thrown-together the staff is: they literally find any teenager willing to work for $1200 per summer, which is about 3 bucks an hour. The quality fits this price. The older staff, the specialists and head counselors, tend to be better but still, almost no one is payed more than $3,500 for the summer ($11-$12 an hour), so you do not get any better staff than a camp that costs you half as much. My program was consistently understaffed and underfunded so that we could not execute fun and engaging activities with the kids as we'd liked. Basically, we were expected to just make do, which meant less work for me, but also less that the kids could get out of it. This camp is very bureaucratic and corporate-y. Also VERY intolerant of kids who don't like sports, especially boys. If your kid is artsy or introverted, they'll hate it. RID: 47383
Click to report rating    10/29/13   5     5     5     5     5   We can't wait to get back to camp. My boys are in different groups but because of the design of senior camp they actually get to spend time together during their afternoon electives. This is especially nice because when they are sharing stories at dinner about their camp day, they are both laughing and relaying details of the same event. These shared experiences have given them an extra common bond and I can see that it will last a lifetime. RID: 46207
Click to report rating    3/20/13   1     2     2     2     1   Sadly, this camp only cares about money. If you have a spoiled child, this is the camp for you. They do not know how to handle children issues properly. This could be a wonderful camp with the right directors and staff. RID: 44026

2/2/11   5     5     5     5     5   I love Mohawk! I'm not sure why the poster below called Mohawk a sports camp since in my experience, as someone who worked at Mohawk, I saw firsthand the remarkable arts, crafts, performing arts, nature, farm, music, etc. programs, making this a well rounded, supportive experience for ALL kinds of kids! And, campers have a wide range of expertly run elective programs (like circus, robotics, dog training, juggling, jewelry-making etc), allowing loads of time for individual choices. I think Mohawk is a perfect camp for all ages, 3-13's, with outstanding, professional staff to support every camper's growth and needs. And I'm not just saying that becuase I worked there, I also went there as a child and send my kids there! RID: 34994

Click to report rating    7/28/10   5     5     5     5     4   Most expensive day camp around, but all 3 of my kids LOVE it so we feel we're getting our money's worth!! This is a sports camp for sure, so if your child doesn't like sports, he/she will not be happy here. Professional sports trainers, swimming, chef prepared food, amazing rides & games: what else could a child want. Luge, trapeze, zip line, ga ga, hockey, mini cars, circus, wood shop, plus all the intense sports training. 5 counselors per group of 31 kids while in the bunk, then specialist counselors added for each sport or activity amounting to 4-1 child to adult ratio. Hard to understand why others said poor supervision, & the poor swimming staff comment must have been written by a teenager who got dumped by a Mohawk lifeguard. My kids are amazing swimmers because of the Mohawk swim program. The music program is off the charts. My only regret is that the counselors don't give the kids time to reapply sunscreen after the 2 swims & my kids come home sunburned every day. Awesome camp RID: 33520
Click to report rating    4/16/08   5     5     5     4     5   How is anyone complaining?! I've been going to this camp for 5 year, and this summer will be my 6th! Every person I've met there loves it and we do great activities. The only reason to be upset about this camp is when it ends, my friend was hysterically crying on the last day! RID: 22340
Click to report rating    9/4/07   1     1     1     1     1   Parents do NOT send your chirldren to Camp Mohawk. The staff is horrible. For the amount of money you pay, this is a disgrace. The staff have a smoking tent next to the lunch area, so your chirldren see there counselors smoking ciggerettes. The facilities are crap and the chirldren just dont have fun. RID: 14886
Click to report rating    6/23/07   5     5     5     5     5   This is a great camp. i went here for five wonderful years, as did my other siblings. it was an amazing camp. RID: 12381
Click to report rating    6/19/07   5     5     5     5     5   I dont know what everyone is complaining about. This is an amazing camp!!! My dad went here i went here for many years and so did my two younger sisters. I still remember all of the fun i had 10 years ago! My little sister still goes and loves it. To me there is nothing wrong with this camp it is overall a tremendously fun camp that kids will remember having fun at for many many years. RID: 12234
Click to report rating    4/16/07   2     3     5     3     4   My big bro went here 7 years, but that was way back ehrn... Then I go cause he used to love it some much and amp has gone to hell!!! Activites were super fun, but barely organized, the richy kids were super snoby, and the staff was even snobbier!!! I made friends and all, but only 1 true friend... The people whom attend the camp say a lot about that camp... And they sucked! Also, when my bro attended, the food was gourmet... now its terrible and cheap! I don't know how the snobs aren't complaining!!! RID: 9761
Click to report rating    3/3/07   4     3     4     4     2   I attended the camp for 7 yrs and worked there for 6. The camp is over-priced, but children are safe and well supervised. Some activities are are boring while other more lively and educational. I think the camp is great for younger children (up to age 9 or so) but any older it may not be as engaging. Though not mentioned in other comments, I think it is important to take into account the **** ideas being perpetuated with the appropriation of Native American culture; I know the directors do not do so intentionally at all but many of the campers are white and it sends some pretty bad messages to let kids assume all sorts of stereotypical things about Native Americans. The camp needs some overhaul-- not just on image but in its structure as well. If you work there, your kids can at least attend for free, but I don't think I would send my kids here. The pay is very low and ageist; unless you're a lifeguard, don't expect to make much. RID: 8263
Click to report rating    1/27/07   4     5     4     4     4   I attended Mohawk for three years, most of my friends had been attending for 6 years. It was awesome. My brother is now going on his third year and can't wait for summer to come. Some counselors are awesome and some are good. I have great memories there. They have an awesome swimming program and no - we are not snobs nor rich. Our parents just wanted a camp that is safe, well-run and most of all, lots of fun. RID: 7267
Click to report rating    10/24/06   1     1     1     1     1   the camp was the worst one i ever went to the kids were stuck up and rich and the counselors wanted nothing to do with the kids, it was horrible. i would never go back in my life. and it was the most expensive camp i've went to they could have had better food, counselors, activities and actual cabins instead of tents. I HATE THIS CAMP!! RID: 4288
Click to report rating    7/15/06   4     4     4     4     2   It's more expensive than private school, but has the top swim program around. Very responsive to specific needs and requests. RID: 1415
Click to report rating    6/24/06   2     3     2     3     4   personly i think i had the worst time of my life but when i think back i know i had the worst time of my life! the camp had really bad staff! but thats jsut me(personly) you could like it but i don't!! I HATED THAT CAMP! RID: 1120
Click to report rating    4/15/06   3     2     2     2     2   staff is nice and friendly, facilities are mediocre, could use more activities for the amount of money Ive paid for this camp. and personal attention is ok.... not great, not horrible. RID: 199
Click to report rating    3/27/06   5     5     5     5     4   Great camp for this area...groups get large, but they give it a small feel with "sub groups". RID: 66
