Most of the campers are legacy (daughters of campers) or have been attending since the early grades. My daughter attended as a rising 6th grader and was not welcomed. The camp counselors were previous campers and promoted inappropriate behavior. They gave one of the girls in their bung (cabin) "honorary counselor" status which exacerbated the situation. From a facilities perspective, the toilets were out of services for a few days so the girls got buckets of water from the lake to flush the toilets. We also paid the additional fee for riding sessions. However, she was asked to clean the stable instead and her sessions were given to legacy campers (the activities are supervised by counselors). After connecting with the owners, they recognized their opportunity areas. RID: 54146

7/23/14   5     5     5     5     5   Nyoda has been in my family since my grandmother's days, when she was a counselor. My mom went, my sisters and I went, my niece is currently a counselor, and in a couple years, I expect my daughter will go. I was a camper for 7 years, and a counselor for 5. My definition of "ahhhhhhh" is still a seat in an adirondack chair under a tree, with a view of a lake. Nyoda girls learn the value of service, teamwork, finishing a job you start, work and play. The singing is probably what I remember best. Nyoda girls sing all the time! The traditions upheld by the campers, counselors, owners and families are a national treasure. The cabins are basic, but they're supposed to be. The activity materials were always in good shape while I was there, and my niece assures me they still are. The grounds and lake are simply beautiful. I can't wait until my daughter gets the chance to be a Nyoda girl! RID: 47683
Click to report rating    6/28/13   5     5     5     5     5   Sending me to Camp Nyoda was probably one of the best decisions my parents have ever made for me. At first, when my mom introduced the idea to me about going I had a definite NO! So she compromised with me,and said she would sign me up for 2 weeks but after the first week if I wanted to come home, I could. I ended up staying 3 weeks, longer than either of us intended. That first year being the new girl I thought I would know no one at camp and no one would be friends with me because they all had already made friends of their own. But when I first got there I felt as if I had known those girls all my life and I fit right in. Not only did I make friends that are like my second family I also learned important values from camp that I think and use each and everyday. Like to always be yourself, and be independent. This is my sixth year at nyoda and without nyoda, I wouldent be the person I am today and I can definitely say Nyoda changed my life forever.-camryn RID: 44922
Click to report rating    5/5/13   5     5     5     5     5   I attended Nyoda as a camper for 5 years and then as a counselor for 2 years. Nyoda made a great impact on my life in so many ways big and small. Growing up Nyoda taught me how to be my best self and be a true friend without the drama of boys, fashion, cliques. It clearly taught me responsibility and the value of work and caring for others as part of a community through rituals and special ceremonies. I am now sending my daughter and believe it will be a priceless gift for her. So many of the same songs and traditions - back to basics it is. Today amidst constant media and cyber-everything it's truly freedom to be tech-free among the lake and trees with only a flashlight in tow along with dear friends. RID: 44417

2/11/11   5     5     5     5     5   When you first see Nyoda, you will notice that its amenities are limited, but this back-to-basics approach emphasizes simple things, like respect, humility, and kindness. No matter who you are, there is a place for you at camp and you will be surrounded by independent, caring, hilarious, and honest girls. At camp I learned a wide range of skills that I still use on a daily basis, like how to live and work with others and how to resolve conflicts. It developed my self-confidence. It taught me that in order to have good friends, you need to be a good friend, as well as how to be one. It has been over a decade since my first summer at camp, but not a single day passes when I am not grateful for my summers there. My camp friends are my second family and their loyalty, support, and unconditional acceptance are invaluable. My Nyoda experience is the greatest blessing I could have ever been awarded. Nyoda’s slogan summarizes the sentiment perfectly: Nyoda, where girls like who they a RID: 35085

1/13/11   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Nyoda truely guided me to become the person I am today. The is hardly a day that goes by that I dont utilize the skills Nyoda taught me. I attended Nyoda for 13 years, my last year being 2009, and have dreamt of The Pines, The Maples, and Wabansee ever since. RID: 34765

1/13/11   5     5     5     5     5   (Many of you will probably recognize me immediately) My family has been coming to Nyoda since my mother's mother was a child. All the women in my family have attended from campers to counselors. Nyoda means more to me than I can describe. It is not just my second home, it has made me who I am today. My years as a camper taught me how to love myself, love others, be self-confident, respectful, responsible, fair, independent, to accept everyone and to look beyond what's on the outside, to "ignore the little annoyances" so to speak. As a counselor I learned to pass on the values I learned to the new young Nyoda girls. It is an incredibly rewarding job. As the head counselor, I learned that the spirit of Nyoda is truly boundless. It was the most fulfilling summer I've ever had. I've never experienced a place where I feel a kind of special happiness I can't even describe in words. I wish I could think of a way to repay Nyoda for all she has done for me and the lessons she has taught me. NL. RID: 34764

Click to report rating    1/12/11   5     5     5     5     5   Summers at Nyoda defined my childhood. It is here that I gained self-confidence, learned to step outside my comfort zone, and truly made lifelong friends. Even though I have frolicked along the shores of Wabanse Lake in years, I still think of it as my second home, and my fellow Nyoda girls as my second family. The spirit of work, health, and love that blooms here every summer is something so wonderful that I couldn't imagine a childhood without it. RID: 34762
Click to report rating    1/4/11   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Nyoda has had such a strong impact on my life. I started to go just because I didn't want to be away from my cousins who were attending Nyoda that summer, so i had my mom sign me up for a week as soon as i could. Once i was there i fell in love. There is something indescribably amazing about Nyoda. With the sweet smell of pine trees, mystical Wobanse lake, and charming bungalows, you will also meet the most caring and accepting girls around. Nyoda has taught be to treat no one person different then another, to put your all in to everything you do, and to ALWAYS embrace who you are. Nyoda's spirit truly inspires all of us girls to be the best person we can possibly be. Nyoda has not just opened my eyes to see the world in a whole new light, but has created a family for me while doing so. This will sadly me my last summer at Nyoda but i know i will never forget the friends i have made, the memories iv'e created, or the Nyoda spirit i am constantly reminded of everyday. -ellery RID: 34677
Click to report rating    1/3/11   5     5     5     5     5   it was my 1st year at nyoda and going in to it i had no idea of what to expect, i did not know if the girls were going to be nice or not. The girls were so excepting and by the 1st hour i already felt included. Going to camp nyoda was probably one of the best discions i have ever made and cant wait to go back next year!!! RID: 34673
Click to report rating    10/7/10   4     4     4     4     4   I had the pleasure of working at Camp Nyoda this past summer. I had no idea what to expect going into it, and I was pleasantly surprised to be so warmly welcomed. I didn't realize that nearly all these girls knew each other already - 98% of the staff seemed to have been campers and then counselors for years, and most of the girls had been there at least one summer before this one- but nobody felt like the "new kid". The values that these girls learn will follow them for life, and the place is absolutely beautiful. Serene when you want it to be, fun and crazy when you want it to be. All the activities looked fun, safe, and bonding. No cliques, cattiness or drama with a group of preteen and teenage girls?? I wish my parents knew of this place when I was a kid! You won't regret sending your girls here :) RID: 34203
Click to report rating    5/12/09   5     4     5     5     5   My Aunt, Sister and I all went to this camp for a combined total of close to 20 years. I believe that it truly impacted the person I became and gave both myself and my sister the lifelong qualities of acceptance and leadership. RID: 29733
Click to report rating    8/17/08   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Nyoda is what I look forward to every year. The week before camp I'm overly ecstatic that I am going back, and I cry when it is time to leave. Camp Nyoda shapes girls and teaches them. I always think, would a Nyoda girl do this? before doing something. AMAZING CAMP!! I have best friends who's mothers went went to camp as did their GRANDmothers. It truely impressive what an impact the spirit of Nyoda leaves on girls. RID: 25783
Click to report rating    7/23/08   5     4     5     5     5   I was a camper for 7 years and a counsellor for 6 and I still go back and help ouyt from time to time. The values there are things like acceptance, fairness, and kindness, and although there are certainly some instances of girl-drama, it's the best way I can imagine spending a summer!! RID: 25059
Click to report rating    7/2/08   5     5     5     5     5   I've never been to a place in the world where I felt more accepted and at harmony than at Nyoda. I went there as a camper for 3 years and a counselor for one - I would be a counselor forever there if it paid better! You'd think having 14 fifteen year old girls living together in a cabin would be a nightmare, but apart from the rare moments of cattiness, I found the all-girls atmosphere to be the furthest thing from stifling. This camp continues to be the source of some of my best memories, and even though I have not talked to many girls from there in a while, all the friends I made there become more like sisters than "Camp Friends," which is more than I can say for any other summer program I have been a part of. Click to report rating    9/28/07   5     5     5     5     5   I LOVE this camp. I'll be going back for my sixth year this summer! I've made so many friends over the years. I look forward to going every year and it's really easy to feel at home. (hot 'kanta!) RID: 15663
Click to report rating    8/24/07   5     4     5     5     5   I was a camper and then a counselor at this camp for a total of 10 years. I found it to be literally the best thing that happened to me for a big part of my youth. A great environment for making girls feel comfortable about themselves, and for teaching good core values (the importance of sharing, being friendly, helping out, etc.) I will say, though, not a pampering camp. There isn't much importance placed on looking good or having a lot of stuff. RID: 14439
Click to report rating    7/11/07   5     5     5     5     5   As an adult who attended this beautiful camp for 7 years in my youth, I still dream and reminisce about it! My days at Nyoda were no doubt the absolute best days of my youth!! Its such a gift to send you girls, one they will thank you for the rest of their lives! I still thank my folks, it is a sacrifice to send your girls, but so worth it!!! RID: 12893

Click to report rating    4/24/07   5     5     5     5     5   This is one of the oldest camps in the country, around since 1917 and run by the same family. As a licensed child psychologist and a former camper myself, I owe a great debt of gratitude to Nyoda for preparing me for an adulthood of service, creativity, and peace. Nyoda is a place of beauty, of simplicity, and of lovingkindness. I would recommend it without reservation. Lucky the girls who get to experience summers there... RID: 10133

The staff is great and they all go a long way to promote a friendly, caring and fun atmosphere. I wish she could have attended longer, but she reached the age limit. RID: 9704
