I'm pleased to say that this wonderful place has been a generational camp since the mid 1960s. It began when I first went, then my daughter, now my granddaughter. The family is warm, musically proficient, and provide an atmosphere of learning, cooperation, individual responsibility, fun and love. What I wouldn't give to be a camper up there once again in this beautifully rustic, mountainous environment!

Hummingbird Camp is a magical place in the mountains where the campers play music or create art or play chess. Art camp provides inspiration, instruction and fun while completing personal projects, installations and/or murals. Camping under the stars, hiking in the moon light, swimming in the river, skit night and a dance to close the week all bond new friendships that last a lifetime. My summers at Hummingbird have been the highlight of my camp experiences and my three sons and our neighborhood buddies. We are already planning for this summer. We can hardly wait to get there!

Hummingbird is different, it may be worn but the experience and activity's brush that aside. Not only do you have fun, but you get more practice with your instrument, as a group and individual.

As a freshman in high school, I've gone to this camp for going on 4 years now. I've made the most amazing friends, and have learned so much. You do play a lot of music (6 hours a day, 4 in group rehearsal, 2 practicing individually) and it's a great place to improve, especially if you're a beginner! The staff of this past year, and the coming years (2013-2015) will be awesome, guarunteed. They're all super cool and super talented kids that genuinely love what they're doing. The Higgins are very selective about who they let in as a counselor, and all of them are 100% awesome. The food is actually pretty decent, I love it at least, and they cater to almost ever special diet. You go on beautiful hikes as well (no more than 4 miles round trip). The one important thing about this place, is that you get out what you put in. If you go expecting to have a horrible time, you probably will. But if you go with an open mind, it could not be a more positive experience.

What a great place! I went there as a child, and now send my own children. It is a place where children come first. I am a better person because of Hummingbird music camp...it is fun to see my kids coming home in a much better place as well. A week in the moutains, away from TV, computers.... What more could a mom ask for? : ) You should see the upgrades in the dorms and cabins. 54 years... They must be doing something right.

I don't see any reason a child will not fall in love with this camp. There is music all around the camp: from the grassy lawn to the back of the guitar studio, to the dorms, to the river. Hummingbird is beautiful, and magical. It pushes kids to try new experiences, and they are always with other new campers who are going through the same home-sicknesses or scared feelings so one can always find a friend. The staff and teachers are always supportive and willing to help, they put all their energy to make the campers happy. I can honestly say I have never tasted food that was cooked in bulk that tasted so good before I went to Hummingbird. By being a part of staff for a few years, I will say that the kitchen is not well maintained and the camp has a skewed view when it comes to religion (singing grace at each meal) and I have had a few troubling incidents when it was obvious the camp was homophobic. I have clearly looked past them because of my love for this amazing place.

I went to this camp a few years ago, so things may have changed. I hated having to "sing" for my supper. When your morning play isn't the best you ate last. Often there wasn't enough food for the last group. The food was okay, special diets weren't supported. My parents were lied to about there being a teacher available to teach me my chosen instrument. I understand that harp isn't a common instrument but my parents specifically asked about an instructor and were told there wouldn't be a problem. And on camping trips the counselors were very unprepared to deal with the needs of 20 odd 4th graders, from food to shelter, to facilitates.

Hummingbird is the most amazing place in the WHOLE world! Every part of the camp is a wonderful place for any child. It is a wonderful place to send any kid, it will become a second home to them and they will want to return year after year. The camp counselors are former campers themselves so they know what makes camp special, so they will make your child's stay even more amazing. 2008 will be Hummingbird's 50th season, so their longevity proves that they have done something right. The Higgins are the original family that founded the camp and they are still running it to this day. The amount of music that the kids learn in one week is amazing. They will learn at least 7 peices of music. They learn 3 chorus songs, 3 ensamble pieces and one solo piece. They can acomodate most instuments; band, orchestra, piano, and guitar. It is such an amazing place to be, I am a former camper and couselor. I would recamend to everyone to send their children to Hummingbird Music Camp.

It's overall a great place to send your children. The facilities are worn, but they are quickly upgrading and the new upgrades are wonderful. The staff and teachers are amazing. The food is not great, but the kids seem to love it - it's pretty much what you'd expect of camp food. The camp has a great format and runs like a well-oiled machine. The kids learn a lot of life skills and social skills plus lots of music. The younger less experienced kids play with the older kids which helps them feel more confident in their playing. Its a wonderful wonderful place.

Hummingbird was a great camp. When I first got there, I didn't know anybody, so I was kind of scared. But everybody was friendly and I quickly got some friends. The staff is great. They worry about the campers more than anything. You play music a lot, and learn to play a lot better too. The food was great, the area was beautiful, and it was just all around great. It isn't only about the music, but also about adventure, and exploring(hence the hikes). I would send my kids there, and I will continue to go.

The whole purpose of this camp is to get kids to fall in love with music. It is not to turn them into pro musicians but to foster and nuture a love of children. This is a totally safe and loving environment. The children play music for 6 hours a day (so I am not sure how the previous reviewer "didn't play much music" as well as participating in other outdoor activities. There is an overnight campout every week as well as a few hikes, three concerts and a dance. It is truly a magical place that has been around for decades. My father went there, I went there and my children will go there when they are old enough in a couple of years. The food is camp food and it is an outdoor camp in the mountains, not the ritz. All in all a great camp experience for kids.

overall, hummingbird was a very negative experience. I barely even got to play any music...all you do is go on hikes that last way too long. The food was terrible, the facilities were not clean. Do not send your children there.
