This place has become a place that i can call home. Old staff, new staff by the end of the summer everyone is a family no matter how many years you've attended. Yes we are a cult but i don't know any camp where the oldest campers in camp are able to name every single one of the youngest campers. Tamakwa has given me an opportunity to test my limits and challenge myself. Ive learned about respect, nature, life, and so much more just from a summer spent at this beautiful spot. Reguardless of past incidents this camp and all the people in it are considered my home. Some events at camp are based around strong Tamakwan families which would possibly be the only down side because they tend to favor the bigger camp families, but its no secret to the camp or the families. This doesn't change the way i feel about this place in the slightest. I do and forever will consider Tamakwa the best thing to have happened to me.

Tamakwa is the place for me! Honestly, this place is amazing. For eight weeks you are living in the most beautiful place in the whole world, with lifelong friends that you will have forever. Be warned, this is not a camp for people who do not like the outdoors. This camp is primarily based on being in the wilderness with lifelong friends and a camp community that feels like family, upholding tradition that was kept for the last 76 years. It just might be my favorite place in the world.

Camp Tamakwa is simply undescribable. Each summer continues to change me and shape me into a better person. Each year is better then the last. The summer of 2009 was the best time of my life. I experienced many firsts and conquered many of my fears. My fellow campers there are literally my family. Boys and girls, brothers and sisters. Our age group is very close and we all tell each other everything. It is not like school we you need to change who you are to fit in. At Camp Tamakwa everyone is 100% themselves. The staff is kind and considerate and they became our close confidants. Our councelors were always there to help us out and give us advice in any way possible. We told them everything and they always took us seriously and respected us. There is honestly no place in the world I would rather be. Tamakwa will forever remain dear to me. I think every night of my haven in Algonquin and spend classes day dreaming about memories that I have made there. This camp will change you forever.

Since the drowning death in 2007 the camp has made significant improvements in it's emergency training and runs numberous emergency training drills throughout the summer.

Former Tamakwa counsellor testamonial: Tamakwa claims to be a non-denominational camp but in fact, is primarily a Jewish-faith (and pro-Israel) based camp with some token Gentile campers thrown in to claim the "non-denominational" title (who, btw, often complained of being treated like outsiders). The food was indeed the worst I've ever seen served to kids (I guess the $7,875 price tag isn't enough to cover costs, and vegetarians were often short-changed of a decent or ample meal. (Hilariously, "Guy", the cook, is still there.) Tamakwa also suffers from being an incestual clique: if you weren't a former camper, you are considered an alien and treated as such. The same holds true if your family income is less than "respectable" or your sleeping bag isn't a designer Ralph Lauren (I actually witnessed the latter). Some of the counsellors were much too young and immature to be watching over children, and far too concerned with fraternizing with the opposite sex. Camp has cult-like aura.

tamakwa tamakwa what a wonderful spot. i love this camp so much!! I really don't know what it is about the place but something is just so magical you never want to leave. The end of camp is by far the best with the greatest activites. But, the long lasting frienships you'll make is the reason i go back every year sure people are cliquey and bratty but if you get to know them you see how amazing they really are. I love tamakwa and all the friends i made there and i love going back every year! I LOVE MY TAMAKWA GIRLS.

If you come from moderate to extreme wealth, you'll fit in fine. If not... we'll maybe you should go to YMCA day camp.

I spent many summers at this camp. It is a wealthy camp full of children who have come from backgrounds where everything has been given to them with no effort on their behalf. The few exceptions were horribly mocked and ridiculed. A great deal of the camp is based upon what you have, not who you are. Now that I have my own child, I know I would NEVER send my child here. The right message is just not given to children about what matters and what makes great campers or people. I regret that I wasted as much time of my childhood as I did in an environment like Tamakwa. On the other side of this, I know many people who loved this Camp and to this day it still holds a special place in their hearts. Bottom line: know your child. The Tamakwa experience can be extremely damaging if the fit is not right.

I've spent the last nine summers of my life at Camp Tamakwa, and i have to say that the time i've spent there, which is over a year of my life, has shaped my life and created my fondest memories. The essence of Tamakwa is so meaningful and it will forever make an impression on me. Having just returned from Tamakwa, paradise if you will, my heart aches as I long to be back on the sunny shores for just one more moment to share with my closest friends

I went last summer. Actually, the food is suprisingly good for camp food. True that some of the other campers are a bit a bit "cliquee" and stuck on themselves, but I made plenty of friends with others. Good range of activities, but just wished they had water skiing (Park won't allow it). My canoe trip was the best experience of my life- I'll probably do a longer one when I go back next year. I don't know what it is about Tamakwa, but the place is magical... I wish I was up there now!

This is truly a special place with staff and counselors who care about providing the campers a unique opportunity to bond and grow in the most picturesque setting in North America. This camp has a decades-long safety record and a deeply loyal and devoted alumni who have the fondest memories of their own time there and that of their children. If you are looking for the best place to send your children, look no further than Camp Tamakwa.

Listen, you see reviews like the ones above and think; this camp has its positives, and it has its negatives. You can never find a camp that have any of both. Tamakwa is so rich in tradition. No matter what happens, you know that your friends will be there forever. Everyone at Tamakwa is like one huge family. You wait the whole year, counting down the days, talking on the phone to your friends, just thinking about that next pointer ride. Back in the city life is to blinding but it is with you that i feel most alive.I feel my most alive at CAMP. Nothing can change that. Away from the city you can relax and get away from the pressure; basically have the time of your life. Your friends become your family, your camp becomes your home. I could never say how i feel about this place. My emotions are to great for words. You meet your lifetime friends, they become your sisters and brothers. Tamakwa is life <3

okay all i can say is wow. this camp is my life. my life wish is to have camp for 10 months and school for two months. this camp has changed my life and is the most unforgetable experiance ever. "back in the city, lights are too blinding, but it's with you that i feel most alive. unveil the curtin, show me who i've been, these are the best days of my life" i was crying so hard when i had to leave but i realized its a circle and i will be back again, and now the summer of 2008 is almost here and im counting down the days until i return to my home. this is the #1 camp that everyone is so close you feel like family. rate this camp high because this is the best thing that could ever happen in your life and it will change you for the better. i have been going since i was 7 years old and now im a first year 49er and i know i want to stay here forever. this is my love and my life and everything at this camp is amazing. I LOVE CAMP TAMAKWA AND I CANT WAIT FOR THE SUMMER OF 2008 BABY WHOOO! <3

Facilities are top notchue to an aggressive rebuilding of the infrastructure during the past 20 years. Tripping progam is one of the best in Alogonquin. Staff is a mix of formers campers and college kids from Ontario and Michigan. Most are Jewish but the camp offers minimal religious programming, other than the Friday night ceremonies. Long history of providing a safe camping environment ended in 2007 with a drowning. Most bizarre is the owners make no acknowledgement of the tragedy on the camp website, newsletters, annual report, etc.

Ta-mak-wa. noun. best place in the world. anyone who disagrees, no offense, but you're wrong. Life long friendships at the most beautiful place in the world. seriously? what could replace standing together singing Taps on the slope, or sitting quietly next to your best friend on friday night, or laughing as you walk around your cabin and pose. The emotion you feel during color war? OH My god

I don't want to sound mushy but this is the best place ever. Don't believe some of the bad things. To the friends that become family and the camp that becomes home * clinks two glasses of bug juice together as a toast* The staff is amazing and you are NEVER bored.

The food is terrible...unless you are into fried everything. How about some real juice instead of flavoured water? The place is wierd. You will fit in if your parents went there and there parents went there...

I didn't fit in here, but one counsellor (I don't even remember her name unfortunately), really helped me through it and made it tolerable for me. I wish I remembered her name! I got my first period at camp and she helped me clean my sleeping bag at dawn in the river so I wouldn't be embarrassed. She was so nice and understanding.
