The person who mentioned the racial dynamics at Nakanawa is 100% correct. Everyone there except the cooks was white. When I was at camp, there was also only one camper who wasn’t Christian—but she was forced to attend the hours-long religious services with everyone else. The campgrounds, and especially the lake, are beautiful, and I met some wonderful people, but overall I found the atmosphere homogenous and stifling.

I am a current camper at Camp Nak and I can say that this camp has changed my summers and life for the better! Everything about this camp is amazing and a great escape from the busy world we live in. The activities we do are once of a lifetime and are truly so fun! This will be my 6th year at camp and can't wait for more memories!

Someone I knew went to this summer camp so I decided to try it out. Everyone one there is super nice. The only bad experience was with another camper but she is gone now. The activities on Junior side are fun but the ones on Senior side are even better!

My 11-year-old granddaughter dreams of Camp Nakanawa through out the school year. They make every child feel special while teaching them manners, respect for otherrs, and all of this while making sure every camper becomes confident in several activities. Of course with kids from many states and countries, each girl extends her friendships far and wide. This one says she will get married there. Really! What more needs to be said. A smiling grandmother.

My daughter attended twice as a camper and LOVED it. She made many friends and had the opportunity to meet girls from England, Mexico, Germany, and Brazil. It is a great chance to unplug and get back to nature. Although she couldn't attend during her high school year, she couldn't wait to get old enough to go back as a counselor. This camp gets my highest recommendation.

I have been going to nakanawa for 5 years. This is the only place that I can truly be myself. I have made friends of all ages, from all over the world and I love every single one of them. My team feels like my family and my tie that I get to wear almost every day is my favorite accessory. The staff is hilarious and all of the campers are so nice. I strongly sugest any girl to come to Nakanawa!

My daughter is a first time camper here at nakanawa, but realize that many of the campers have been attending for years, as have their mothers, grandmothers, etc. my daughter LOVED this camp with all of the rules, especially posture and etiquette. I wish I would have had this opportunity! This is a safe, structured camp with ample free time to encourage individuality. The grounds are beautiful, the weather cool- perfect!

My shy 8-year-old went for 2 weeks not knowing a single girl. She left having 30 new friends. Every counselor knew her name. Her swimming, tennis, and confidence improved tremendously. The owner texted me photos when I worried that there wasn't a photo of my daughter in the gallery one day. May daughter adored her cabin counselors. Every experience was positive. She definitely wants to return next year.

We found this camp on the internet and just had a good feel about it! When we arrived at camp on the first day it became apparent that our girls were going to join big family. Many of the campers are not only sisters or older campers but also daughters and even granddaughters of former campers. For us that said it all and we were confident we had made the right choice. Our 2 girls have just had 2 fantastic weeks and want to sign up for next year already. You can't have a finer endorsement!

I have been a counselor at Camp Nakanawa, my daughters have been campers and then counselors, and I can say that the experience they had has had a strong role in forming their values and friendships that will stay with them the rest of their lives. Both girls say they hope to send their daughters to Camp Nak. Both have been involved with camp since they were 8..10 years or more. A great opportunity to have girls be girls without outside pressures and distractions...no boys, TV, cell phones, etc. I love the traditions and the thought and care that goes into all of the programs and interactions with the campers. Yes, some children may have less than ideal experiences, but that could happen at any camp, and is more likely to be an outcome based on upbringing or personality than any fault of the camp. Unfortunately not all chidren (and their parents) appreciate how great camp really is......

I'm a 3rd generation Nakanawa girl and I have to say that I LOVE this place. Not only are the activities a blast, but the friendships I've made have lasted a lifetime! I can't wait to send my own daughters here! To the commenter who brought up race, I am shocked! Yes, the majority of the campers are white, but for you to say there is no inclusion is unfair and hurtful. In no way does Nakanawa discriminate! It so happens that a lot of girls are white, but race is not a factor in "acceptance" to the camp. Nakanawa simply looks for girls of good moral character. To the mom who rated camp all 1's- I'd like to know how old your child was- if she was young, maybe she had a hard time adjusting? I'm sorry your child feels she had a bad summer- and that she'll be missing out on the camp for years to come. Camp Nak is amazing, maybe try a mother-daughter weekend if you're apprehensive about sending your daughter! Wo He Lo!!!

Nakanawa is an excellent camp for young ladies. Our campers and staff come from all over the world and from varied backgrounds. It is a traditional, structured camp and everyone that attends can find there special talents, make lasting friends, and have a refuge of natural beauty and wonder.

Nakanawa is a wonderful summer camp, but that's just the start - it is a community for a lifetime for those who connect. I attended as a camper for 9 summers, a cabin counselor for 3, and am still involved with the best friends I expect to have in my life. My three daughters have all been campers, and I hope to some day send a granddaughter to Nakanawa. Why? The place is beautiful, the staff and instruction are excellent - but mostly it's a chance for young girls to live independently from their families without technology, fashion, and social pressures ruling their days. They return home more poised, confident, and in touch with their own unique gifts. Does it get any better than that. (And, for the record, there is amazing global diversity, including African American campers and counselors on staff - still a too-small minority, but not for want of welcoming leadership and an inclusive spirit.)

This camp is a great value. It is still priced well under those in which it is compared. I think this makes it accessible to many more girls than it would be if it were more expensive. I have been as a camper and counselor and appreciate all I learned from new skills, to sharing close quarters with others to learning to appreciate others differences. Campers and counselors come from around the world: including Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Italy, Spain, England, Egypt, Russia and Ukraine. It is a well rounded place and a lot of fun especially getting away from technology and enjoying nature and making true friends.

I can't believe that I sent my child to camp here!! She had an awful experience and I will forever feel guilty for it. Warning: you are going to spend a lot of $$$ to have your child come home sad and unhappy.

I attended many years ago, for several years. Absolutely wonderful camp... if you're WHITE. It seemed a few Hispanic people were allowed in... but when I attended, the only African-American people on the grounds were the cooks. From the photos I've viewed over the years, it seems nothing has changed. No diversity, no inclusion... just the old South mentality. I would be interested to know if ANY African-American girls were EVER allowed to attend Camp Nakanawa. Maybe someone should look into that.

I spent two consecutive summers as a camper here. I excelled in every activity and gave it my all. I won awards in tennis and congeniality. However, it only takes the jealousy of one to make a fun summer go sour. I learned at Camp Nakanawa about Mean Girls.

I spent 6 summers as a camper and 2 summers working at Nakanawa. I formed friendships of a life time starting at 10 yrs old that still remain. Camp instills values of honor, team work, love, and of demanding the best of yourself. The Chapel services are moving, motivational and spiritual - - one of the best parts of camp.

This camp is soooo awesome. Girls get a chance to discover who they are without technology and in nature. There is a slight emphasis on religion, but it's nothing that a non-christian can't handle. The camp is divided into two teams, Amazons and Valkyries. There is friendly competition between the two, and girls gain a sense of worth and belonging to their respective teams. The counselor staff here is marvelous and attends to every need. The only downside is for people who don't enjoy rustic living. The cabins are seperate from the bathhouse, which uses filtered lake water. There are also uniforms, which encourage girls to look past appearances. Overall, this camp is great.
