The US Canadian boarder is closed and I am concerned about racially charged comments at the camp amid the virus outbreak. On April 30th, after one camp staff reassured me the deposit would be refunded if the camp is canceled, I withdrew the registration. Now the camp is canceled but the camp staff denied she said that, a complete change of tone from the initial friendliness. I sent them the emails we exchanged as evidence. They basically just ignore me because they can I suppose. This is not a fair and honest way to handle issues, I am deeply disappointed with Taylor Statten camp.

My parents sent me to Camp Ahmek in the late 1960s because they thought that associating with the children of the wealthy would make be ambitious. I was told that this was a place of superior people and that I would have to be on my best behaviour. It turned out to be a living hell. The "children of the wealthy" turned out to be self-centred spoiled brats with delusions of grandeur. I was bullied constantly, to the point where I literally begged to be sent home, but when I was finally given permission to call home, I was closely monitored by a supervisor and not allowed to have a private conversation. I felt pressured not to say anything bad about the camp, so ended up being incarcerated there for another two weeks - four weeks in total. I was interviewed by Taylor Statten himself, who told me that the bullying that I was experiencing was an experience that would harden and mature me. Fifty years later, I still suffer psychologically from the abuse.

I went to Ahmek and worked at both it and Wap in the 1970s and early 80s. Best time of my life. Have lifelong memories and friends. Canoetripping in Temagami, Quetico and the Park was fantastic. A formative experience for sure. Learned to love paddling, portaging, gorp, Neil Young and the Grateful Dead.

I went to this summer camp for the 5 best and most memorable summers of my life. I made life long friends with whom I later traveled around Europe with. Both in camp life and time spent canoe tripping is incredible, wether you are riding horses sailing, or hanging out with some of the worlds greatest people. I have nothing but praise for this camp and know that my kids will be sent there as soon as they are old enough!
