Lonehollow is the best camp that I have ever gone to, and it is so good that I just created an account here a minute ago to express my feelings for it. I have been a camper here for seven years, and those summers have been the best of my entire life. From the minute you arrive at camp and when you are drawn into a crew, you are surrounded by people who support you and care for you, giving you an amazing camp experience. As a maverick and a relatively old person at camp (9th grade) I get to help everyone in my crew and at camp, no matter what their age. The staff here is amazing, from the wait staff in the Dining Hall, the counselors that teach all your activated, and even the full time staff here that works year round. The food also is amazing with three meals a day and two snack breaks in between those meals! You never get bored of the activated because of the endless selection. Bottom line, I would definitely recommend this amazing camp to anyone who is interested.

Lonehollow is truly every camper and parents dream! My daughter, Sinclair has NOT STOPPED talking about the food, the environment, the activities, the counselors and the camaraderie. As a parent, that is all you can ask for is a place that leaves such a positive experience in your child’s heart! My daughter occasionally can be a picky eater and she LOVES the Lonehollow food - she insists the rolls are hands down the best she has ever had! Before we made it back home she was already in touch with her cabin mates about plans for next summer!
I personally found the permanent staff — not just the counselors to be so helpful!! Jennifer in Meg’s office is nothing short of AMAZING!!! Everyone is so kind and accommodating
The memories made at Lonehollow are those that will last a lifetime! Thank you Meg and crew for creating such sisterhood of a rich environment for everlasting friendships!! We cannot wait for Summer 2018! #Explorers #WeAreLonehollow

After going to Lonehollow for 6 years, I cannot imagine my summers without it. I have grown so much as a person here and learned so many great life lessons. I love everyone in my cabin including my counselors and couldn't imagine not having them in my life. I also love that this is a co-ed camp, because you can meet guys and girls who your best friends. The food is really good and I never felt too hungry or too full. The counselors there have taught me so much and influenced me in so many different ways that I truly think of some of them as my older brothers and sisters. At my age (15), you are given freedom and privileges so that you do not feel like you're being treated like a kid by having a class each day for lead climbers (my age group) for us to do whatever (w/ counselors) and also a 2 day trip. This is truly my favorite place on earth. If you're worried about a homesick child, I was homesick my first 3 years but now I'm 'camp sick" when I get home. Thanks Lonehollow!! - emily

Hello, I am a 13 year old girl from outside the State of Texas, and I just returned from Lonehollow. Believe it or not, this is the fifth summer camp I have attended (others were specific to arts and sports), and this one stood out! The food is amazing -- and we were fed six times a day! I loved meeting new friends, and even though I was not from Texas, and knew not one person when I got on the bus, I immediate felt welcome! I think I made lifelong friends. The cabins were spacious and clean and air conditioned! The reason why I gave the activities a 4, instead of a 5, is because the campers were not divided by ability. For the things that I was really good at before I got to camp, I did not feel that my skills improved because there was not a whole lot of quality instruction -- But, I was able to try things I have not tried before. The evening activities were awesome - my favorite was paint war. I would definitely like to return next year!

My son attended term 1B. He is very social but was a first time camper. We received a kind letter from counselor. We never met any admin staff but did meet his counselors at close. We did not meet any of his activity counselors. The size of camp makes this difficult. My son sadly never felt like he became friends with his cabin mates. 4 of 8 boys were from the same city. LH mix things up more please! One boy in particular was disrespectful and unkind to all fellow cabinmates. I am saddened that my son came home and wept because of the mean words one child said to him rather than share his accomplishments and good times. He kept his feelings inside until he was away from camp. I wonder if this camp is becoming too large to provide personal attention. There are all types of life lessons to be learned at camp and ours was that those who bully others often feel insecure about themselves. All that being said, my son would still like to return. If it's the right fit, it's a beautiful camp.

This camp has been so great for my son. They cover all interest and have great staff!! Everyone has been so nice and the accomodations are the best I have ever seen! They have done a wonderful job creating a great place to live and play. I would recommend it to any parent. The kids are encouraged to have team spirit and cooperate as a team and they have tons of activities to keep the kids interested. I only wish I had gone to a camp this great! "Geared to Live" is the motto and it is appropriate! They learn so much about life and working together!

My son has attended camp at Lonehollow for 6 years and loved every session. The staff is nurturing yet recognizes the importance of independence. The food is outstanding, fresh and healty. I love how the camp stays in constant communication with the families not only during your child's camp session, but also throughout the year. I highly recommend Lonehollow!

Our children have not officially attended camp here - but are set to arrive this weekend. I am having very mixed feelings about this place ever since we visited family camp. We were somewhat late to arrive bc of my husbands work schedule so things were a bit underway. When we did show up however, we were barely greeted by the front desk who told my husband where to park and gave us some name badges. For the rest of the time - I kid you not - not one person came up to us to introduce themselves or acknowledge our ( or our childrens) presence. I can handle that just fine as an adult but not so sure about my children. After reading these reviews I can say for sure I felt what people are saying about this place. We ended up meeting Meg on the last day at breakfast (only bc we approached her and were determined to introduce ourselves) She came off very aloof and acted as though she could care less who we were. I am sick that my kids are going here.

I have sent 2 very different sons here for 6 years. My now 12 year old started when he was 7 and begged to go because his older brother was going. I gave in and let him go for a week and when we picked him up he didn't want to come home! After that he went for 2 weeks and now goes for 4 weeks and can't wait to go. Our 16 yr old went for 6 years and, after much soul searching, is getting a summer job and taking a class this year. I can't tell you how much they both grew, learned new skills like scuba diving and cooking, and started eating so many different foods. It is very expensive and I agree with another reviewer it seems too nice for "camp". I only wish they had a camp for parents :)

At first glance this camp seems like a dream, but don't let the beautiful setting and buildings fool you. Be sure to ask about specifics when it comes to health and safety before enrolling your child. Just because a lot of money is spent on facilities, does not mean that other aspects of your child's camp experience will be as good. Ask to read policies concerning health and safety and procedures in the event of emergencies, distance to nearest hospital, etc. Camps can be fun, but they can also be dangerous. Do your homework.

I send three very different children(athletic and social all the way to shy and "nerdy") to this camp and they all three love it and beg to go longer. My children truly love the staff and seem to know lots of great guides who return every year. I hear about different guides, foods, friends, and experiences all year. The only guide my kids have ever expressed missing had moved on was no longer in college. It truly has been a wonderful experience for our family and we are from a small town and do not have any connections. My oldest son was in a treehouse with a guide who was fired during the term for inappropriate remarks about a female camper. That same summer, I also heard about Meg shutting down a camp dance in 10 minutes because of dirty dancing. I can see how these types of things might infuriate young guides, but as a parent, they impress me. I wonder if some of these guides who have such bad attitudes are not ones the leadership team wanted to get rid of anyway?

This is the best summer camp in Texas!!! The facilities are amazing. Although some may think they are a bit too luxurious for camp, I think they are fine. The food is AMAZING. Everyday I crave some kind of food from camp. The counselors are the best. They're so kind to everyone and make you feel like you are right at home. I have learned so many life lessons at Lonehollow that have made me a stronger individual on the inside. I have also made some unforgettable friendships here that will last a lifetime. I have become friends with people from all over the world! There is not one day I go without missing Lonehollow. I can't imagine my life without Camp

My child had a wonderful time here as her first sleepover camp experience. The facilities are beyond amazing and my daughter came home with lots of stories of fun adventures and new friends. Horseback riding was her favorite by far, and the stables were immaculate when we toured them. Based on what my daughter told me, I'm a little skeptical about the gourmet chef (pizza takeout one night, cereal for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch doesn't say "gourmet" to me - but to be clear, she didn't complain) and the overall quality of the classes (they seemed to be loosely run by the teenaged staff). Also, third term campers don't join crews, which disappointed my daughter. Overall, she's looking forward to going back this summer and I'm happy to send her.

my comment has been deleted multiple times i was on staff a few years ago and it is the worst structured camp... I had an awful experience as well as many of the other staff who were already talking about how they weren't coming back after the first term. meg is disrespectful and doesn't care about her staff.

This camp is a rip-off. I was a counselor there and when the parents arrive everything is sparkly perfect. Everyone is filled with fake optimism. When the parents leave the counselors are continuously taxed by a sassy leadership team made up of power hungry(I could use other words but I'll spare you) people incapable of respect or compassion for their coworkers. Almost no counselors return because of the lack of respect that is shown towards them and when you treat people like crap the only people who return (for the most part) are crappy people. This negative attitude eventually feeds from the counselors into the activities/cabin and subsequently the children. So the trickle down tension cycle continues. I have never worked for an employer that was so much more of a hindrance than a help. The food is also a problem the website calls the food gourmet and what it is, is powdered eggs every morning frozen pizza and frozen chicken nugget Chinese food. Do not send your kids here.

Camp Lonehollow is the best place on earth!! I am a camper who has been going to this camp for 4 yrs and this camp is great! All of the guides (counselers) are soo nice and helpful. Someone said that the staff return rate is very low, but about 50 % of the guides I had recognized from past years. Most importantly, the friendships you make at Lonehollow are unbelievable! I loved my cabin this year! Lonehollow does a great job with cabin placement because every girl in my cabin ended up being like sisters to me! Plus, the facilites are great! Every cabin is sooo nice with AC and bathrooms. The silos are awesome! The food is top notch and there is always something good to eat!. The owner Meg is soo nice and always has a smile on her face! She can help you with ANYTHING!! The activities are the best part! The blob, zip line, horseback, cooking, and tennis are some of my favorites.! Like they say, when you cross the bridge to Lonehollow, your life will never be the same. GearedToLive!

You can read all about the camp online, but here's our specific experience. Our daughter was a 1st time camper in June, and we were a bit worried. She's always been an "indoors" girl, a picky eater, addicted to texting and facebook, afraid of bugs, and carried antibacterial hand wash. Viewing pictures of the lake she proclaimed she would not be putting one toe in that! So when we picked her up last weekend, we were just in shock. She couldn't talk fast enough to explain she won a prize for art, got 3 bullseyes in archery, climbed the iceberg in 26 seconds, and even ziplined into the lake!! Ziplined? Into that lake? Did we get the right girl? She had a few bumps and bruises she wore like badges of honor, proudly explaining the hilarious stories behind each (midnight kitchen raid!?). We quizzed her on every facet- food, safety, facilities, etc, and we can't find fault anywhere. She came home happy, self confident, adventurous, and is already counting the days until she returns. Just wow.

Dear Everyone who views this rating, This is my 5th year going to Lonehollow. I can't wait for camp during the school year, it is my home away from home! I love this place and i'm not the only one. I understand this camp is expensive but it is totally worth it. There is nice counselors, great food (they have a famous chef but i forgot the name) , granite counter tops, air conditioning and more. Please don't listen to these parents saying Lonehollow is not fun or the counselors are tired, they do not know, there not the kids. I hope your kids can come to Lonehollow next year, and I'm sure you won't regret your kids coming. - Preston

The staff was great on opening day - friendly, respectful and informative to parents and campers. Unfortunately, camp owner Clayton Clark was quite obnoxious, directly contradicting what several members of his own staff had told us about the check-in process. This guy should stick to his law books and let his capable staff run the place.

Is it just me or has anyone else try to rate this camp and have the rating deleted after a few days? My child attended this camp last summer. She was forced into two activities Archery/Skin Diving. She did not want to do either. This activities appear to be catch all for campers when there isn't anything available. The equipment for both the events was of Walmart quality. For the price of this camp you would think that the quality of equipment would be top notch. I recieved a letter from my child stating that she had to take these two actvities that she didnt want to take. I emailed Meg the Camp Director and did not recieve an email from her. When I asked at pickup she ignored my question and had to do something. I would have thought she would have be a little more concerned but in speaking with other parents this is pretty normal from Meg unless you are in her circle. I will not be sending my child back.

The staff is exhausted and the camp is structured like school (I.e. changing "periods" every hour) the full time staff is more focused on who they can attract of status instead of the experience each individual camper has. It's all about money and looks and doesn't provide a true camp experience. There are no camp songs or camp feeling to Lonehollow. I was very mislead when being recruited to work their and will not be returning along with the majority of the staff. They have no problem hiring because it is a beautiful place but I think it's safe to say the staff return rate is extremely low. This is from a staff perspective (who sees more than the campers and parents) and I know many of the other non returning staff were very disappointed in the treatment they received from the owner/director. Also the camp is growing rapidly because of the quantity not quality approach.i would not send my kids to this camp due to the way it's run.

Our two girls attended Lonehollow summer 2009 for a 2-week session. Although expensive, we considered it a wonderful experience for them. The facilities are phenomenal; in fact, one of the things we had to "get over" was that the cabins and dining hall, etc. are a little "too nice" for kids' summer camp. The activities provided a perfect balance between traditional summer camp and more "extreme" up-to-date activities like rock climbing and mountain boarding. If it had been slightly less expensive, we would have liked a three week session (two weeks being a bit short and one month out of our budget and too long anyway). We loved the camp director, and counselors from around the world seemed engaged and competent. The camp is new and building its traditions. Our girls want to return!
