7/7/15   5     5     5     5     5   My son, now 12, has attended TIC Camp-VA (in Virginia) for three years. The camp has changed facilities once. The new facility is definitely an improvement. For my son, the camp has provided the perfect balance of exposure to technology such as programming or robotics and sports. The sports are not all traditional sports -- some are things such as pin ball and quidditch. This gets all of the kids moving and involved, even those who are less athletic. The campers do their technology activity and project with one partner through a two-week period. I would advise signing up for the activity with a friend your child already knows and knows s/he can get along with for two weeks. They will have plenty of opportunities to make new friends during group activities and sports, but this way they will know that they will have at least one friend they are sure to get along with for the focused project. Most kids do come in with a friend for this part. RID: 48827

They learned programming, film making and digital arts (photoshop) in a manner that was supportive and fun. In the programming class, they made a game learning introductory principles of programming, and wrote do loops and if-then else statements in their code. The counselors were fantastic. They were college students who had expertise in technology or sports and were really engaged with the kids. For example, the filmmaking counselor was a recent grad from a film school in the UK. The sports part was well organized--kids get to choose a "focal sport" (mine chose team handball) in which they spend 1/3 of their time, and then rotate between other activities. The aftercare was fun. RID: 37067

Unfortunately, many of the counselors just couldn't care less. They spend most of their time socializing with one another, both in the sports and the technology portions. If you call to discuss this with the office, you'll be told both directly and indirectly that they're not interested in hearing what you have to say. RID: 25268
