Camp Marshall has really gone down hill. Chronic staffing shortages are a big problem, and all of the counselors are new. Counselors are not much older than our daughter and are only there for the summer, so their interest in the job is low. I get that staffing shortages are a problem everywhere, but camp management and the Board of Directors really need to step up recruitment efforts to hire some quality staff. The last straw was being informed by our daughter that a long time camp director left, which I was very surprised to hear. Very disappointed to learn this from our daughter. No public announcement was made to the families. I get that I'm not entitled to know specific details about why a staff left, but a quick announcement regarding the director's departure would have been nice. No transparency at all. Counselors are not well trained and seemed confused at times. Very sad and disappointed that a once fun and exciting camp has gone downhill so fast.

This camp is awesome, I attended as a camper for many years before becoming a counselor, you get plenty of riding time with safe reliable horses. The atmosphere is great and the staff are great. My friends and I all had an awesome time, I was a camper up until I was 16 years old! Fun for all ages! Definite YES

Last year (2009)I went to the horse lovers program at Camp Marshall. Some people wrote reviews complained about the saddle up program, and I understand. Saddle up is not a very good program for beginner riders and I think that the 1-2 intructors who were teaching 10+ kids at a time were overwhelmed. However, I really enjoyed the horse lovers program! We got exactly what we were promised,(2 1 hour lessons, barn classes, and plenty of time in the stables) I think that anyone too young to attend the horse lovers, bring your horse to camp or horse masters should think twice before signing up for Saddle Up because it is NOT what you were promised and it should be a fun experience! The only complaint that I had was that there was not a lot of personal attention. Everyone definetly got lots of attention but it was more in a group than personal. The facilities, staff and activities were great and I'm going back next week. Summer 2010!

I went to the Saddle-Up program two years ago. Needless to say, I am not going back. We didn't get NEARLY the promised amount of time on horseback each day. Also, the counselors hardly listened to me or payed attention when I was having trouble with the other girls. Also, two younger girls were fighting with each other, and they came to me half the time because the counselors weren't listening. Despite the fact that I was 12 years old, I still cried like a baby at night. Not recommended.

My 8 year old daughter attended this Camp July, 2008 as she wanted to learn to ride. The 'Saddle-Up'program was supposed to be a beginner riding program w/ lessons, horsemanship, and barn chores the 1st 3 periods daily. We called 2-3x before to verify what was posted relative to our expectations. We were entirely MISLED by the website information. This program stated that “Campers will spend an hour a day in the saddle learning the basics of horsemanship.” this NEVER happened. Sun, no lesson;Mon, 30 min; Tue, 30 min; Wed. 15 min; Th. 15 min, and Friday 3 min.@ family demo.Eleven (11) children to 1 instructor ratio. We requested 'Western' lessons, she was taught English; She cried at night several times and asked to call us; they refused the call and didn't even tell us!! I wrote 2 page letter asap and they never even called me or looked into it at all. No professional managment, no accountability. NOT RECCOMMENDED
