Click to report rating    7/25/22   1     4     4     1     1   My son just returned from two weeks there. He was bullied and excluded. He literally has marks on his body from being pushed off a dock. He was pinched and his stuff was taken away by other kids and is missing. There are two counselors assigned to the tent but I don't understand what is the point if they completely neglect putting a stop to this kind of behavior. As a parents we of course asked why didn't you inform a counselor? The response was there wasn't any point since they could see it happening. This was definitely beyond just being picked on. Having your child come home and cry about their camp experience - well please find somewhere else to send your kid to summer camp. I think the facilities are good and activities are fun but don't kid yourself if they claim they stop bullying. They don't and they didn't. If your kid is unlikely to be bullied, then its probably a great camp. RID: 53585
Click to report rating    2/27/20   3     3     3     3     3   This is your traditional typical YMCA summer camp on a lake, but not more special than others. My kids did have good summers here, but when an issue arises the senior staff can be shockingly insensitive, one-sided and ill-equipped to deal if you push back or question their actions, and apparently there are no real channels for recourse. I can not imagine any family would be okay with how our situation was handled. There are enough great camps summer camps out there with better leaders. RID: 53158
Click to report rating    12/4/17   5     5     5     5     5   My mother went to Camp Sloane, all five kids in my family growing up went there, and my three children went--one went back as a junior counselor. They went to summer camp, family camp and winter camp when it was offered. It is a simply gorgeous place, wholesome and unspoiled. This is a camp that will change your life, as many of the reviews have stated. My middle grade novel called CRAZY MOON, coming out in spring of 2018, is based on our collective adventures at Camp Sloane. The best thing about it? The chance it offers today's kids to connect with nature and their peers in a wholesome setting. RID: 51519

7/19/17   3     3     1     2     1   My 2 boys, 10 and 12, had a negative experience at this day camp. They have been to sleepaway camp and are active Cub/Boy Scouts. The day camp should not advertise that it accepts campers at this age level (or it should change its program to accommodate campers at this age level). Why treat the 10 and 12-year-olds like they are five and six-year-olds? On the first day, the boys were asked to stand in a circle and sing while clapping their hands with the other little kids. It crossed my mind that it was not really an age appropriate activity. The camp has one a one size fits all program. Also, sessions are too short to permit every child in the group to participate in the activity, so not everyone gets a turn in the 45 minutes session on archery, or rock climbing, though they must wait for the others to participate. The boys did appreciate the water skiing program though the cost was not worth it. The boys reported that each only was permitted 10 minutes a day in the water. RID: 51058
Click to report rating    4/25/17   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Sloane is like a family. It is situated in the foothills of the Berkshires and has a spectacular location with memorable views everywhere you turn. The camp has really grown and returned to its traditional CAMPING and YMCA routes. There is everything from sailing to a state of the art climbing tower, any comments about the lake are ridiculous, its a large beautiful lake in the woods, its not a pool, its not supposed to be. And yes, everyone sleeps in platform tents, on bunk beds; no phones, no t.v. no internet.. and guess what they live, they even pick their heads up and interact with the world. While my kids have never had a problem with counselors partying or kids bullying I am certain the administration would not accept either and would do everything to address that if it were to occur.  2/20/14   5     5     5     5     5   Honestly the best experience my children have ever had. They came home with a new sense of independence and confidence meeting new friends. The staff were all fantastic, caring role models. I hope my children can be a part of the Camp Sloane Family for many years to come. RID: 46795

7/27/13   5     3     5     5     4   First of all, there are no leeches in the lake, I wouldn't exactly defend it, but saying it has leeches, is a false statement. All the counselors I've ever had (I've been there for 5 years) have all been very nice. campers were never abused, and no one was on drugs, I can assure you that. All the girls i have ever had in a tent are very nice. If you didn't like them, then that was no the fault of the camp. If you thought the tents were bad, then you probably shouldn't have gone to a camp that stays in tents, ever thought of that? Why didnt you like the tent anyway? because it had bugs (you went to a camp in the forest.) this camp is really a good camp, and would recommend it to anyone. RID: 45395
Click to report rating    5/5/13   5     5     5     5     5   THIS WAS THE BEST SUMMER CAMP EVER!! When I read those other one's like "there are leeches in the lake" And the counslers are crazy. First of all they are crazy fun and, ya maybe you got bullied there. But the truth is that you could get bullied anywhere!!! (I am responding to one of the ratings that infuriated me because they are all not true!!!) Thank you for listening to my comment. I think i over reacted a tad bit but thats okay because. THIS IS THE BEST CAMP EVER! RID: 44412
2/24/13   1     3     2     1     1   Sadly this camp has not changed in decades. Counselors using drugs and abusing the campers. Activities are still slim and far between. No quality to the campers experience. The camp really needs an overhaul from the very top right on down. The only thing that would help this camp is a major management change and some very hard work on the part of the new management! RID: 43803
Click to report rating    2/19/13   2     1     1     3     2   I went here when I was pretty young, and everyone there was very mature, even though I was considered very mature for my age. The tents were horrible, there was a tornado warning while I was there. I think my counselor got pregnant... Girls were mean, boys were kinda weird RID: 43761
Click to report rating    9/3/12   5     5     5     5     5   great place, best thing my parents did for me. It has now been many years since I was a camper, but I still attending family camp/labor day, every year RID: 42579
Click to report rating    6/20/12   2     1     1     1     2   i went there summer of 2008 and 2009. my first year there was an awful group of girls that i had to live with. they were all best friends and excluded me. the queen bee started a rumour i was on birth control (going into 6th grade mind you). the next year, i was stuck with them too because we were the same age. i felt isolated and there was rarely a friendly face. the food was dreadful, the counselors were bad too. our tent counselor would never get another counselor to monitor us when she had the day off and we had to do all her duties. there were leeches in the lake which we had to swim in every other day if not the freezing pool. all the activities were cheap and something i could have done at home. you had no freedom and i was begging to go home by the first night. never send your child to camp sloane. it scarred me and made me think summer camps were awful RID: 41362
Click to report rating    2/23/12   1     1     2     1     1   WORST ****ING CAMP OF MY LIFE, THE COUNSELORS WERE ****S, THE BATHROOMS SMELLED, THE ONLY FUN THING THERE TO DO WAS WATER SKIING ADN YOU HAD TO PAY EXTRA FOR IT. RID: 40383
Click to report rating    7/23/11   5     4     5     4     5   Between my two sons we have seven years of Camp Sloane experience. They both love it, have developed great friendships there and have been responsible for bringing more than a dozen newbies into the camp over this time. There is a large Brooklyn contingent here with many kids from Park Slope. If you are looking for an old-style camp (tents, so-so food and basic amenities) you will be very happy with the camp. The focus here is on being outside. Activities are fine, with horseback riding and waterskiing being the most exotic things available. Nothing's perfect and I'm sure there are people who have gone and had less than positive experiences. However, for the parent looking to send their child to a camp that's both rustic and inviting, you can't go wrong with Sloane. Also, in my own opinion, the community of children is great and the counselors are, by in large, very good, fun and decent kids who come from all over the world. RID: 36477
Click to report rating    7/4/11   5     5     5     5     5   I have gone to Camp Sloane for the past five summers and they have been some of the most amazing summers of my life. I made many friends whom I was able to see year after year and whom I continue to see outside of camp. Although I have friends from my very first year, I progressively gained even more friends from all the new campers that came each year- Sloane is in no way a socially exclusive place. True that the facilities are not top notch, but they are not horrible and they serve their purpose. The people come for the great experience, not overly-fancy facilities. In recent years the food has improved, due to a new cooking staff. Some kids think the group activities like Olympics day are boring and that is understandable, but they can be made fun open mind and a good attitude, because Sloane is really what you make it. I made it something great, and ended up having the best and most worthwhile five summers of my life. I plan on returning as a counselor. RID: 36275
Click to report rating    6/13/11   5     5     5     5     5   This summer is going to be my 5th summer at Camp Sloane. I can honsetly say that this is the best camp ever! I dont even understand the negative comments below, because Sloane is nothing like that. Yes, the food was never great, but last summer they got a whole new kitchen staff, and they cooked us really delicious food like steak. the consulars are like family members, and they listen to your problems. My friends from camp will truly be my friends forever. I have made life long bonds with my fellow campers and consulars. The square dance's are really great, and the activities are always fun. Your first summer your a little homesick, but that is completley normal. We do sleep in tents, but the tents are awesome, and their are bug nets,so the bugs dont even get near you. Also, the showers are just as good as any other camp. I love, love, love, love, love Camp Sloane, and I would recomend it to anyone that wants to have an AMAZING summer!!! Sloanians Forever <3 RID: 36100
Click to report rating    1/15/11   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Sloane truly changed my life. It has been my paradise for the past few years and I can say every week I spent there was amazing. The staff is GREAT and the square dances are so fun. The friends I made at Sloane will be my friends forever, I will never forget Camp and any of the great memories I will hold with me forever. I was shy and camp turned me into a confident leader, I would recommend this camp to ANYONE. I can honestly say that camp sloane has CHANGED my life. RID: 34845
Click to report rating    6/20/10   5     5     5     5     5   camp sloane is the best camp in the world! no camp can posibly be as good there are new things you can do everyday and the counslors are amazing RID: 33060
Click to report rating    6/5/10   4     5     4     2     5   This camp had fun activities, except that the food was AWFUL! The counselors forced me to eat pot roast smothered in gravy one night, and the dining halls were seperated by gender. Also, the swimming levels were too "schoolish" and the squaredance was kind of wierd. I would have preffered a more conventional dance. Also, there was limited correspondence with our parents, and when I got homesick and wanted to call home they swore up and down that it was strictly forbidden! I think the activites were good especially the rock climbing, and the staff were pretty nice, but I will not be returning to camp sloane. RID: 32914
Click to report rating    3/14/10   4     1     1     2     2   Camp Sloane was not a good camp. The activities were horrible. We did origami from a book, and finger painted. The lake had leeches, and you were forced to swim in it every other day (it alternated between lake and pool), The counselors were nice, but the food was terrible. You were given 5 minutes a day in a cold shower, and the tents and bathrooms were full of bugs. The people were sort of nice, but exclusive. One time we had Camp "Olympics", where we made two signs from a piece of cardboard and 1 can of paint, and played boring games in the hot sun all day. I would not recommend this camp to anyone. RID: 32376
Click to report rating    1/24/10   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Sloane could possibly be the best thing that happened to me. The counselors are the best! they are so much fun and you make friends so easily there! the lake activates, such as sailing were always the best! yeah the pool was cold, but we always had so much fun! sometimes we would have camp outs, where we would roast marshmallows, and set up tents in the woods, and just talk. camp Sloane is the BEST. do not listen to any of these comments, I promise you you'll have the best time of your life there. I guarantee it. RID: 31954
Click to report rating    8/20/09   5     4     5     4     5   I love Camp Sloane I was a Junior girl and my Brother was a Pio boy...we both had sooooo much fun! The food was amazing and I made so many friends! The tents are great and they have bug nets(no worries) The counselors are awesome and most of them are from Europe! There were 2 girls in my section that were from France! To tell you the truth I was looking for a drama camp and this is ROCK BOTTOM! The Drama sucks but everything else is amazing! Great weather! I had so much fun in the lake! Even though the pool is FREEZING! There was a girl in my tent that was staying for all 8 weeks! I am sooooo going back next year! RID: 30787

Click to report rating    6/28/09   3     3     2     1     1   I hated this camp. I went last year, my counselor was horrible. The facilities were okay, I mean we slept in tent for God's sake! Also, you had to wait about an hour to go to the bathroom, and you had to walk about a mile, so that was really annoying. Also, the activities were boring, and you barely ever are assigned what you want. I had no attention unless I lit my hair on fire (not saying I did) but no one cared what I thought, so why bother? My parents didn't get their money back. They should've, I stayed for 11 days, I was supposed to stay for 14, and I never did water skiing, which they payed another...what, $2,000 for? So just don't go. Everything was bad. It was so bad I went home 3 days early! Never send your child to this camp. It's torture. RID: 30260
Click to report rating    6/26/08   1     1     1     1     1   I went to the camp a few yrs ago, and hated it. I could have done all of the activities at home. My counselor would come into our tent at midnight and wake us all up. The staff did nothing when my parents call after i told them i hated it. RID: 24294
Click to report rating    6/24/08   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Sloane is such an amazing camp. The food here was a whole lot better than it was at the two other camps I have been to. I met some fabulous and kind people at Sloane and I cannot wait for this summer! RID: 24219
Click to report rating    3/8/08   5     5     4     3     5   i had a great time at camp sloane but i bet i could have had a better one. the counselors and staff are fabulous and the evening activities are great, too. but, still it wasn't the best camp ever. RID: 21087
Click to report rating    3/6/08   5     5     5     5     5   My sister went here for 4 weeks and had the time of her life. Yes, camp sloane is not the ideal high end summer camp so if thats what you want, Camp sloane is not for you. She loved it because she enjoys the outdoors and she made so many new friends. Out of the 4camps she been to, she says camp sloane was the best. RID: 20988
Click to report rating    2/23/08   4     5     5     4     4   I really love sloane. i have gone for the past 2 years and it is awesome. the counselors became so close that they were like my best friends, and the activites rock! RID: 20590
Click to report rating    1/7/08   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Sloane knows what it is doing. Strong staff, great activities, and a true connection to the outdoors. My children have really enjoyed everything about this place and cannot wait to return. They've been to camps that cost thousands more, and Sloane is their all time favorite! You cannot go wrong at Camp Sloane! RID: 18714
Click to report rating    9/27/07   2     2     2     2     2   My son went there and was in Pioneers. He was looking forward to hiking and rope courses, but was not able to get any oft hose activities instead he had to play handball, basketball and soccer everyday. All things he could do at home. PLus he said handball a counselor never even showed up. His couselor was not there most days and was not very active in keeping him ocupied. He was quite bored fprmost of the time. He did say that the food was great. RID: 15635
Click to report rating    9/5/07   2     4     3     1     3   My son was tormented by an older child (torment was verbal and physical and included having rocks thrown at him) and the staff did little to prevent this. He cried for 3 nights and was not even helped by the staff to send a note home (he was told he had the wrong pen to write the email). Our emails to the camp to find out why my son did not write home were ignored. He also was not able to do activities he wanted to do. RID: 14925

Click to report rating    7/5/07   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Sloane is an absolute gem. I was a camper at Sloane for six years, starting as a Pioneer, and ended up working there as a counselor for my seventh summer. I went for eight weeks every summer, which isn't necessary but I highly recommend. (Only the 8 weekers truly know Sloane!)The staff is fantastic (and I'm not just saying that 'cause I was one). I still remember fondly my counselors from my Pio, Junior, and Senior years. They had a real impact on my life and I'm still in touch with them as I am with the friends I made along the way. And speaking of friends, some of my very best friends of all time I made at camp. We visit, we email, we keep in touch, and though I've been out of camp for three years now, they mean more to me than most of my non-camp friends. The activities and facilities are simple-- don't go to Sloane if you're expecting a five star hotel-- but they are also authentic and traditional. (Obviously) I receommend Camp Sloane highly to anyone who's thinking about it! RID: 12719
Click to report rating    6/12/07   5     5     5     5     5   I haven't gone there yet, but my whole father's side of the family has and I have heard nothing but great things about it. I have very high expectations. The friend I am going with, her father and his side of the family have all gone to camp sloane and said it was great. I am more than excited to go and have a great time! RID: 11898
Click to report rating    9/5/06   2     2     2     1     3   I went to Sloane for 3 years and each summer got progressively worse. The tents are alright, but the mosquito nets are worth their weight in gold, especially for the boys' sections near the lake. Most of the counselors are international, occasionally there will be one or two with limited English, but many simply show up for the days off to go into town. No off-camp trips unless you're going to the hospital. The last summer I was there, my section haed was maybe there for 3 weeks out of the five, most of the time he was only there to wake everyone up. The CLT program is a joke, with a new trend of many of them getting kicked out due to drug use at a time. Overall a camp that needs desperate improvement and more activities to get kids moving, instead of sitting around the section for 3 hours a day. RID: 2838
