i worked here for 1 year. this is what i saw. i saw racist camp counselors with nicotine addictions calling eachother the n word. i've seen a counselor who still works there call a group of scouts "Jews". I saw 2 scouts who thanked me for being the only counselor at Tamarack who has ever been nice to them thus far. I saw the nurse lose her mind over a racist kitchen staff member because of his and his kitchen's extreme lack of hygiene, who will never be fired out of fear of hurting his feelings. i saw staff getting near heat strokes on the 4th of July, and uncertified staff members life guarding when they cant even recall their CPR lessons. The more i think about my 1 summer there, the more i regret putting in a second application for next year. I won't be coming back.

I went on my daughters 4th grade field trip to Camp Tamarack. Had a great experience other than the food service. If your child has any food allergies or special diet needs, this is NOT the camp you'd want your child to visit. I spoke with and emailed Regina, the manager of food service 2 weeks prior to our arrival regarding my daughters food allergies. Regina assured me they are a peanut free facility and that my daughter would have special meals prepared. My daughter has a life threatening peanut allergy. When my daughter was served her "special" lunch she went to her table to eat her meal. She unwrapped her sandwich and discovered she was served a peanut butter sandwich. This could have killed her if she took a bite before opening the sandwich. Regina said it was an oversight on her part and offered to make her a sandwich with sunbutter. The next meal she was served pasta with meat sauce. My daughter is allergic to beef, which she was informed about. Don't trust their food service!

You get what you pay for. Tamarack is an "each man for himself" type of place. Kids are distant with each other and the counselors are detached. No added value skills are taught. This review is in comparison to the other 8 week summer camps I attended in the Berkshires and the Western Mountains of North Carolina. Tamarack is kind of like a place where people park their kids for the summer. it is assumed that if you are from the Northwestern suburbs of metro Detroit you will send your kids there. This is a "hindsight' review that is also based on knowledge of the values of particular employees whom have direct contact with the children. It's just not a "warm, loving, nurturing, spirit-boosting culture." It wasn't worth the time off from my regular summer camp to see where my school friends spend a part of their summer. I have read reviews below that said kids suffer a loss of self-esteem there. It's probably true. It's like the motor industry assembly line summer solution.

This was my first year at camp Tamarack and I had a lot of fun. The staff is okay. The facilities are very good. Activities are pretty good. Personal attention is below satisfactory. And the overall monetary value is good. The only things that are not the best is the food and I wish it was only 2 weeks not 3 and a half. This is most likely my last year at camp, but it's overall a pretty good experience.

My children are happy for the last two years at a wonderful Jewish camp in Lexington, but they used to attend Tamarack. We had to change because we could see that our children (and all campers) were not getting the proper supervision and caring that they needed. Further when my children say they left meals hungry because of poor quality and terrible quantities that is just unacceptable. Then when they told me about the night time adventures of illegal activities that their counselors joked about during the day (which also made the counselors sleep in and be tired and lazy) that was when we made the change. Sending our children there was like playing russsian roulette - they might be fine, but the risk is too high.

For all of you haters out there, you must not know how to have a good time! You must be spoiled so much that you forgot how to have a good time without money or ****ty clothes! I have been having a wonderful summer for 8 years! I've been going since I was 6 years old, I had a great time then, and I'm still having a great time. So the foods not always gourmet, and it's a little big. So what if the cabing aren't pristine! IT'S CAMP! SO LOOSEN UP AND HAVE A GREAT TIME!! Stop complaining! Maybe thats why nobody wanted to be your friend! I know I wouldn't! I love Camp Tamarack!

I sent my children to Tamarack for 3 years-NO MORE! Every year, although my children were fairly happy, I was miserable. Could NOT get the administration to call me back when I called-I had to repeatedly call them before someone would speak to me about the complaints I was getting from my child's letters. My children came home with stories that still haunt me, the complete neglect and disregard that my kids went through is not acceptable. The food was rated terrible, by even my non-picky eaters. My children knew things that their counselors were doing (late at night) that were completely innappropriate. I tried to discuss this with a director and they really did not care. So now I must say that I am a happy mom and I have happy kids that came home this summer from Wooden Acres with no problems or complaints. They were not sunburned or sick or unsure of their future summers. We are now happy to be part of the Wooden Acres family.

I spent three summers at Tamarack. (Ruach '04, Specialty '05, and TSS '07) This was the best camp I've ever been to in my entire life, (and I know, since I've been to four camps). Let's put it this way: I live in Arizona, so if I'm willing to keep on flying back across the country, it's definetly worthwile. I would like to be a counselor at Tamarack in the near future. This is the best and most amazing camp EVER! TO ALL THE HATERS: Since there are so few of you, maybe you're the ones with the problem, NOT THE CAMP!

To be honest, this camp is just too large to give each child the attention they deserve. There are many children who "slip through the cracks" at this camp. I personally will not send my child there again, she came home sunburned, hair like it wasnt brushed in weeks, and a little less self esteem then when she went. Unless you have a child who is very verbal about their needs and doesnt require a lot of adult attention (what kid doesnt?!), then I wouldnt send them there! This summer we are trying a camp with less campers!

very fun place! i went there for 5 summers, and loved every one. the only complaint i have is how the older kids are treated like the younger kids. i would never be a camper there again, but i would be staff. as for the food, you get used to it. :P

Their bread was soo stale I COULDNT eat it, or even digest it for that matter. The apples tasted like soap. The cabins were filled with bugs and extremely dirty, I hated being in there! There must have been some laws against this place.

Wonderful, exciting, diverse Jewish experience. I would reccommend this camp to any Jewish youth looking to make new friends and learn about traditions.
