Click to report rating    8/11/24   5     3     5     5     5   Our 2 kids have been attending Camp Emerson for the last 2 summers, and have had an incredibly positive experience. We can attest to the personal attention that the staff gave to our daughter who struggled with homesicknesses both years. The director (Zach) is empathetic towards both kids and parents, and communicated effectively with us, but also dealt with the issue directly with our daughter. Both our kids have dietary restrictions (celiac, a gluten intolerance) which was properly cared for with the camp's unique and upstanding "allergy program" -- there is literally no other camp we felt safe sending our kids to. Our kids loved the food, in addition to it being safely handled and prepared. Our one complaint is that the bunks could use updating. They're addressing it in the offseason, slowly but surely, but it would be great to raze and rebuild more than one bunk per year! RID: 54072

10/17/23   2     2     1     1     2   During my summer tenure here, I must express my utter dismay at the abysmal management of the camp. To put it bluntly, this camp is a masterclass in deception. Its social media portrays a facade of children joyfully playing , but the reality was quite the opposite. The kids I had in my bunk had a countdown, etched in chalk on the wall, eagerly marking the days until they could leave the camp. (True fact) The new directors, Zach and Molly, were nothing short of a nightmare to work with. Their leadership was characterized by a severe lack of communication, senseless rules, rudeness, and an utter disregard for staff. Zach, in particular, stands out as the epitome of incivility. Working under him was a daily exercise in self-esteem erosion, making it one of the most degrading experiences of my life. His behavior was a stark reminder of how not to be a decent human being. I genuinely wish I could delve further into the details, but I’m close to the 1000 word limit on this website. RID: 53901
Click to report rating    8/6/23   4     4     4     2     3   My child has been going to Camp Emerson for a few years and has always loved it. We chose the camp specifically because it is a food allergy specialist camp and we have been truly grateful - like so many families - to have found it. However, the camp is under new management and this first year, it has been clear that safety and food allergies are not being taken as seriously. There were incidents this summer involving food allergies and hospital visits. Camp staff also did not always know where emergency epipens are on campus when every minute counts in an emergency. On a wider note, the new management did not do the job of the previous management of balancing safety and being overly-directive with giving especially older campers some sense of agency. It will be a sad loss if the new management chooses to take away the food allergy specialist aims of this beloved camp. RID: 53812

Click to report rating    2/9/22   3     1     1     2     2   Maybe it was COVID or ??? But, none of the advertised activities presented in glossy literature were offered, even after being preselected. It was broken equipment, blow up bouncy slides, and basketball all day every day. The lake wasn't even being utilized. The same applied to the condition of the bathrooms, limited staffing, and no air conditioning even in the central hall (or fans) during 90 degree temp weeks. For the amount of funds charged, the value definitely wasn't there - you could just as easily have run the same in your backyard for 20 kids or so. The food was definitely not as advertised, per the nurse/dietician/camp director/flyer, etc.. No fun options, no healthy options, no returns for me, no juices - just water and milks - and no yummy fun snacks. When my child went to the on call nursing center, the staffing was so undertrained, they didn't even give her the doctor approved, provided script meds that they had on hand. Horrid experience with mine home early ill RID: 53525
Click to report rating    8/15/21   1     1     1     1     1   I attended Emerson 30 years ago and am still traumatized about the experience. The counselors openly mocked the kids (when they weren’t complaining about being underpaid), the bathrooms were disgusting, and the place was falling apart. Nasty bunks, activities without proper supplies, cold showers. They had a radio station but were too cheap to pay for a license so it broadcast about 100 feet. The owners clearly didn’t reinvest in the facilities but always had shiny BMWs sitting in the parking lot. Marv and his goon Norm were absolute monsters to anyone they didn’t like, and it sounds like Sue inherited all of their worst traits. I was excited to see they are throwing in the towel and selling the place to become a trailer park of all things. They should have been shut down years ago for the way they treated children - good riddance! RID: 53449

10/8/19   5     4     5     5     5   My children have loved Camp Emerson. My daughter attended for 7 years and my son for 4. Sue Lein is one of the most caring and compassionate people you can meet. She goes above and beyond for each individual child. The staff is superior. They really want to be with the kids and connect with them as teachers, friend, parent...everything you could want. RID: 52914

5/9/19   5     5     5     5     5   Camp Emerson is an amazing place! My son attended camp for the first time last year. He came home a completely different child. He was more independent and self sufficient. He made his own bed!! Sue and her staff were very accommodating and answered all the questions a first time sleep away parent would have. His counselors were receptive to his needs and he came home with all positive things to say. As for food, My son is a very hard child to please. He felt like there were plenty of options for him. We are so excited to send him back to Camp Emerson for a second summer. RID: 52611

5/9/19   5     5     5     5     5   Last summer, my son attended Camp Emerson for two weeks. Words cannot begin to describe the positive impact camp had on his life. When I asked him what his favorite part of camp was he replied, "Mom, I can't pick just one thing. I loved everything! I learned how to swim, play archery, and be part of a play. Mom, you can just be a kid there." My son came home more confident, independent, and interested in trying new activities. He was in a warm, welcoming environment surrounded by peers, counselors, staff, and administration that cared for him and were always looking out for him. He is counting down the days until he returns this summer. Camp Emerson is an amazing camp, and I would recommend it to anyone! RID: 52609

5/7/19   3     3     3     4     2   I have been attending this camp for many many years. This coming year will be my 5th year. I always thought this camp was perfect until I saw the rating system and what I had to rate. The camp is by no means bad but I couldn't give anything a 5. I also didn't give anything a 1. Mostly 3. everything is just average and I guess I like that. I do recommend that if you want your kid to be watched 24/7 you don't come here as while the personal attention is good, if your kid is a troublemaker, no matter what he/she wont really be watched. The food is okay, not great. The staff all hates their life for the 6 weeks but they love it when they leave to get drunk and have intercourse on their breaks. This last year of camp was the best of my life. My counselors were the best I have ever had, Both of which were new, we even got a returning head of the boys side to stay in our bunk. It was also a turning point for Sue and her kind of harsh rules. I think this next year has potential to be the best. RID: 52606

1/4/19   4     5     5     5     5   I love camp so much!!! Every day I think about it & wish I was there so I could enjoy the activities with my friends and see them all. I’m so grateful for camp because me and my division are all so close. The bunks are cozy and the facilities are usually kept clean. The counselors are all from abroad so there can be some issues but generally it’s nice having foreigners around (minus the days they go to Applebee’s where they have sex and drink). The campers aren’t super jappy and pretentious like at other camps, which is also a good thing. However, the director Sue is nothing less than a monster. She yells at kids, threatens to deport counselors, and just in general makes camp a lot worse. She even threw out a kid for hooking up & dealt with a lawsuit over it and lost the camp’s ACA accreditation. Her parents, Marv and Addie, who used to own the camp, were apparently really nice and ran it well until she took over. I love camp so much but she honestly is so unfit to be running it. RID: 52408

7/18/18   1     2     2     1     1   Camp director Sue Lein is a nightmare and she has the worst reputation in the business. She took the camp over from her father to avoid bankruptcy. She truly hates children. My child notified me that she screams on a daily basis for as long as 15-20 minutes. Children are being put to tears daily from her abuse. She rules with threats and intimidates the children. She speaks down to the children and her employees in front of the campers. It’s a horrible environment. Last year a child was thrown out for kissing: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n... This year not even 10 days into camp 2 children cut themselves with razor blades because they were so desperate to leave. All the counselors are foreigners so that she can avoid legal issues. They’re heard having sex on campus. At visiting day all the parents were complaining. Believe me when I tell you this camp is currently under investigation for employment harassment and childcare iss RID: 52021

7/9/16   5     5     5     5     5   My 13 yo daughter had a great summer at Camp Emerson. She made great friends, tried some new activities and learned a lot. The counsellors were are friendly, skilled at teaching their activities and enjoy being with kids. This camp stands out with its personal attention from staff, friendly counsellors and campers and impressive organization by the director, Sue Lein. Also, my daughter has celiac with a severe gluten allergy and the camp provided great meals and snacks. She loved the food. There are full time nutritionists at Camp. RID: 49752

2/10/15   5     5     5     5     5   Summer 2014 was our first time at Camp Emerson. LOVED IT! My daughter had the best summer of her life, created unforgettable memories, learned a lot, tried many new fun activities, and made amazing friends (from all over the world!) It felt that the entire staff was committed to making sure those kids had a great time. We have nothing but to rave about Camp Emerson, and are definitely coming back in the summer of 2015 - this time for all 6 weeks! RID: 48398

10/21/14   5     5     5     5     5   I am a multi-year employee for Camp Emerson. I can not recommend it enough to work or send your children. Over the years, I have met a ton of fun and interesting people. The best part is, everyone seems to really care about the kids. Each of the staff members in my experience has been very strongly qualified to be an instructor in their subject area. Artists in the art center, Coached on the athletics fields, and Scientists/engineers in the step beyond building. As I write this, they are also building a lot of new things around camp and continuing to improve their facilities for the future. It's a great place! RID: 48091

3/29/14   5     4     5     5     5   Camp Emerson is an amazing place. Camper to kid ratio is roughly 2 to 1, and counselor to kid is bout 4-1. My son received personalized attention and was thrilled with his first camp experience. As a parent, I found that Sue Lein and ALL of the staff were BETTER than they sound on paper. We are definitely going back! If you're looking for an independent, yet nurturing, place, look no further. RID: 47099

3/22/14   5     4     5     5     5   My daughter, age 10 and son, age 12 LOVE Camp Emerson. They get to choose their activities and both are happy even though they have very different interests. The Camp Director, Sue Lein, and her staff are everything they profess to be. This is a warm and nurturing camp where the kids are kind and respected. When we started camp my wish was for them to make friends and did they! My kids live all year to be with their friends. I couldn't be happier. RID: 47070

9/4/09   5     5     5     5     5   Our daughter had her first camp experience this year at Camp Emerson and loved every minute. The range of activities was wonderful, and she tried so many new things. She got off the bus after her 3 1/2 week session and immediately began lobbying to attend the entire summer in '10. Her counselors were wonderful, and when we visited on Visiting Day that feeling was reinforced by every single counselor/staff member we met. We felt there was superb communication with the camp and with our daughter, based on the scheduled call days and the opportunity to visit on Visiting Day. The kids all seemed very well-rounded with many interests and it did not seem like a competitive situation. The setting/camp is beautiful, and the facilities are just right, in our opinion: cabins are a bit rustic(as they should be), Dining Hall is beautiful, with a beautiful pool and two lakes. She gained self-confidence and had a fabulous summer. What more could a child or parent want! RID: 30903

7/15/09   2     2     4     1     1   This camp is touted as "not your ordianry summer camp". The director met with our son and our family and she promised that there is no bullying, that all the kids who may dance to their own beat would be embraced for who they were and what they liked transcending gender bias and bias in general. It's one of the most expensive we've seen, but we thought you get what you pay for. We thought it would be a great match for unique youngster, especially with all the promises of indivual attention and supposed care given to first timers. We unfortunately didn't do enough homework. Visitors' day was disasterous. The director was hostile and defensive saying "this is the real world" (though it was promised to be anything but the real world and all its harshness). My son felt bullied w/plenty of mean comments about his intersts, his looks and his family, by bunkmates and even a counselor. We decided to take him home 1 1/2 weeks early. He's only 9. The director was irrate and nasty. BOO!!!! BAD !! RID: 30420

11/5/08   5     5     5     5     5   Highest ratings to Camp Emerson! My 10 year old son had his very first camp experience at Emerson in '08 and loved every minute! He can't wait to go back this coming summer. Some of the things he raved about: how nice and helpful the counselors were, great meals and snacks, and of course loads of activities to choose. The other thing that he mentions frequently is how nice the other kids were, and the great friends that he met from around the globe. As a parent, I was very impressed by the attentiveness the directors give to individual needs of the campers. I found them to be available and supportive every step of the way. My son grew so much at camp! He went from being a shy video gamer to an outgoing kid full of energy and enthusiasm for so many things besides gaming. He discovered talent in the arts and watersports, among other things. The camp facilities are wonderful. Modern enough to be comfortable, rustic enough to be camp. The menu is very kid friendly and well bal RID: 27322
Click to report rating    9/22/08   5     2     4     5     4   I have gone to Emerson for 4 years now, and next year is my last summer.Overall, I love this place. The counselors are amazing-best you'll find at any camp, anywhere, and the activities rock too. I have made so many friends at camp, who are among my best friends. Emerson is, on the whole, a great camp, but there are some serious flaws that HAVE to be fixed. The first one is the oversupervision. The directors are really really nice people, always there for you if you need anything, although they are, particularly Sue, the most overprotective people I have ever met in my life.Court time (time on basketball courts before bedtime) is meant for socializing, but boys and girls can barely even talk to each other, let alone hold hands, or god forbid they hug.they went so far as to put motionsensors behind the bathrooms so people dont make out.also, bunks are ok,nothing special, but bathrooms are the worst i have seen. if they can clean up the facilities and loosen up with the boy-girl intera RID: 26678

Click to report rating    6/28/08   3     3     5     4     5   I know that several people say that Emerson is bad. That's not true. I once went to Kohut and it stunk, so I was skeptical before going to Emerson. I had nothing to fear!I was homesick at first, but one of the owners was so nice (Marv) to go out to a store and buy me a Mets cap to remember about NYC (where I live). The counselors were very nice, and they give you personal attention. My counselors were Sam, Harry, and Brad, and they understood everything that was wrong, and they fixed it. I always get jittery before camp, and today is one day before camp starts, but writing this review makes me feel a lot better. RID: 24410

Click to report rating    2/27/08   5     4     4     5     5   I just finished my summers at Camp Emerson and I can honestly say that the memories I have will last me a life time. I often get very emotional when I think of all the great times I've spent at this camp and the amazing people I have met, and that I will not be able to spend my summers there again. The staff each year was extremely supportive and I felt very comfortable with them. I keep in touch with alot of my old counselors and I am actually visiting some of them this comming April in England! I have made some of the best friends I could ever imagine. The kids who go to Emerson are all compleatly down to earth and kind. Whenever I recall past summers I only have positive things to say. Anyone who is looking for a camp this is the best choice by far! I am going on a teen tour with friends that i made at Emerson this upcomming summer and i know it will never compare. =) RID: 20735

2/24/08   5     4     5     5     5   This is my daughter's 4th summer at Emerson and she is bringing her little sister this year. Emerson is a wonderful camp with all of the traditional camp activities and many intertesting and different activities. My daughter has loved the more creative activities like "junk art" and CSI:Hinsdale as well as tennis, swimming, theater and sailing. The staff has been warm and attentive and she keeps in touch with her counselors during the off season. It has been great to see so many staff members return from year to year. I think it is a tribute to the camp that so many staff members spend all of the college/post graduate/summer breaks over and over at camp. The facilities are good: the new dining room is beautiful and there is a heated pool. The bathrooms are not in the bunks but they are kept clean. This is not a country club but this is camp and it exactly what it should be! My daughter cannot wait to share her amazing camp experience with her siblings!! RID: 20627

1/26/08   2     1     2     2     1   BEWARE, I worked there and my child attended. Positive reviews are by employees (paid to say it's great) kids (out of school-having fun with friends-not noticing things parents care about) and deluded parents. The directors will tell you anything you want to hear, but they are full of baloney. Last summer, there was no nurse for a few days! Bathroom are dirty, but on visiting day everything looks great! It's all for show. The profit margin is huge, as the camp spends the mimimum on supplies, and your kids wait endlessly for a turn on one of TWO electric pottery wheels (for a class of 10 kids) or for a rare turn waterskiing. Of course, the camp directors' kids don't have to wait for anything! They'll even bump your kids out of starring roles in the plays in order to give them to their own kids. It's disgusting. The camp doesn't even feel campy. It's not woodsy and rustic. It's like an overmanicured suburban junior college. With huts for the kids to live in. Look elsewhere! RID: 19423

Click to report rating    12/8/07   5     4     5     4     4   Emerson was a great camp to work at and the campers are wonderful which is why your children should go! the activities are fun and the campers keep returning - if your child is abusive, violent, into clicks, **** or over competitive then the camp is not for you. IF your child is creative, caring, believes in helping others and enjoys being involved in everything then this is a great place to spend 5 summers and the campers bond so well. After the final year they all do teen tours together as they can't dream to be apart. The staff watch over the kids and are involved in making the summers great. RID: 17796

He has already asked if he can return next summer ( He is 10 years old)After reading the previous review I asked him if he had to clean bathrooms, laughingly he said "No way" We attended camp on visiting day and found the bathrooms to be clean, the bunks were old but freshly painted and neat, the dining hall is brand new, and was cleaner than some restaurants Ive been too . So overall Camp Emerson has been a very good experience for our family. RID: 13876
Click to report rating    8/9/07   5     5     5     5     5   im a camper and i just got back from my second year at emerson. The bathroom's arnt that dirty plus no one I know ever complained about them the activity's are really good also the owners are creative so we do original and fun activity's. Instead of having things all camp's have we have that plus more. We really good art's, theatre, athletic's and thing's like computer's robotic's and some really fun stuff almost no camps have. the lake is really clean not polluted the worst thing at the camp is probally the health center wich is still pretty good for a camp. I'd say about 7% percent of the people at camp dont come back next year beacuse they liked it so much so 93% f the campers each year like it. Theyre always adding new activity's and making them as fun as they can. RID: 13797

I feel that my age group was was to over supervised. Heck, they didn't even let boys sit next to girls when we took a trip to the movies. They're all afraid that were going to start getting freaky with each other when all we really want to do is socialize and have fun. Also, the facilities at this camp such as the cabains and bathrooms are disgusting! A kid in my bunk had to go get a tetanus shot after cutting his foot on a rusty nail that was sticking out of a pice of plywood on the floor. The bathrooms are also INFESTED with bugs, ticks, and other things you wouldn't want to see in a bathroom, sutch as**** in the shower. The reason that the bathrooms are so dirty is that the camp leaves cleaning the responsibility of the campers, which also have to maintain the bunk. I hope this helps! RID: 5949

There were 3 bunk counselors for only 8 campers for both of their cabins! And all the counselors were 21 years and older (no jcs or cits). My son loved the individual attention. And my daughter just loved her counselors. Both loved the activities and the ability to choose. The directors and staff were always available to help. Both of my children made friends, learned skills, gained confidence and had fun! We looked at a lot of camps before choosing Emerson. Emerson offers a lot of sports, but it is not a camp for ultra jocks. I would highly recommend the camp, especially for a non-competitive child or a child who might be a bit nervous about camp. Click to report rating    7/30/06   1     2     3     1     2   Very poor communication between camp and parents. The camp facilities are not very nice. The director does not return phone calls once camp is in session. Prior to camp, the director will tell you anything you want to here. She will tell you that all bunk placement requests were honored and when you arrive at camp, you find out that it is not true. There is very little bunk supervision. The camp's prices have increased over ($800 for 3 1/2 weeks) in three years. There is not much value in the extremely high price they charge. They no longer offer early enrollment discounts.
