12/30/13   5     5     5     5     5   Having attended this camp for several seasons I can say without a doubt that the Maine Golf and Tennis Academy really cares about the fun and personal progress of each camper. Unlike other camps, there is ample opportunity for growth and skill development for dedicated young athletes with skilled professionals and expansive facilities. There also is an impressive compliment of activities when they are not training and for the younger children. Regardless of age or aptitude, the needs of every camper is taken into account for the best experience possible for their stay. At the camp it's the goal of every pro, counsellor, and employee that ALL of the campers have FUN and make progress EVERY DAY. You're getting what you pay for. The location and grounds are beautiful, and the lakeside is very nice. The camp really does look like the pictures! RID: 46432

10/8/13   1     1     2     2     1   I encourage all parents to do their homework before registering for this camp. My review is based on the tennis program. Joel L. does a terrific job marketing this camp, however, most of the features and benefits fall so far short of expectations. My instinct is that very few people actually visit this camp before registering their kids since it is in such a remote location. The camp is in awful condition. From the grounds, to the bunks, the boats that barely operate, and the tennis courts with virtually no room behind the baseline. This camp is marketed to serious tennis juniors, and is completely misleading. There were only 2 kids during the entire summer that could be classified as somewhat competitive juniors playing at an iTF/USTA tournament level. If you are looking for serious tennis training or competition, this camp is a joke. Do not be mislead by the "advanced" or "elite" programs. They do not exist, despite what is marketed. Hope you can learn from our poor experience. RID: 46091

10/3/13   4     3     2     4     1   Like many camp there were definitely a few counselors that probably never should've been in a role of responsibility, yet for the amount of money that's paid I guess you get what you pay for. Still, it's hard to believe that a camp that's been in operation so many years continually has the same issues. Why things were never addressed with the boats for example is beyond me, afterall skiing and such is heavily advertised, but kids rarely got out on the boats. The only saving grace of the camp was that a good portion of the staff were great with the kids and often gave them one on one time in both tennis and golf. But, due to improper working conditions and ever-changing work assignments it's a sure bet that they'll have a nearly full overhaul of staff once again. The few staff returning are likely doing just to be with those campers that live far away from them, definitely not on account of the camp and it's misleading Director. All I can say is do your research. There are better camps. RID: 46069

7/30/13   1     1     1     1     1   Please read! Our kids were so excited for what we thought would be an amazing opportunity this summer. What an incredible disappointment. We were swindled by the slick talking Mr. Lavenson. Not sure how he gets away with the many false claims and advertising that are posted on his website and literature. My kids got very little individual or small group instruction. Not enough golf at a golf camp? How can that be? When we saw the facility we were appalled. They market the facility as an official PGA training facility, are you kidding me? It's a 4 hole pitch and putt that's in terrible condition. My kids said that the instructors acted as if they didn't want to be there. The supervision and decision making of the staff was deplorable. They advertise water-skiing as an activity that the kids can do each day. A lie! You need a boat to water-ski and their boat is inoperable. The staff said that this is a problem each summer. We pulled our kids out! Please don't send your kids here. RID: 45432

6/8/13   5     5     5     5     5   I am a teacher and my children attended Maine Golf and Tennis in Kennebec Maine. It is one of the most outstanding examples of the very best that summer camp culture has to offer. Your children will be taken care of as if they were the owner's own. Their skills will expand and they will be exposed to highly professional staff and facility second to none. I cannot say enough good things about what a great experience summers at the Lavenson's camp was for my two children. RID: 44696

2/22/13   1     1     1     1     1   My child attended this camp last summer and it was a nightmare. First off the golf course is very far from the camp its self and it only has 3 short holes. Then in the middle of his stay half the staff was fired and to top it off he came home with lice!! RID: 43781

2/7/13   1     1     3     1     1   My son attended the camp for the last 2 years. None of the staff members returned from the previous year because they hated the director. BE CAREFUL - they put additional charges on my credit card without my permission. HE WONT BE GOING BACK! RID: 43608

2/5/13   5     5     5     5     5   This camp has SO MUCH to offer!!! It is set right on a magical lake in the mountains of Maine. Every day campers are taught to be the best they can be, in their game, and in life. The director and his wife work hard to ensure that the campers are well cared for and that they always have a person in close contact with them that they can turn to for advice, instruction, and understanding. The people here are great, the instructors knowledgeable and educated, and the list of activities is NON_STOP!!! It does any person who is interested in a golf or tennis camp justice to check into this camp. The price is exceptional, considering the caliber of trainers MGTA has onsite. Friendships that will last a lifetime are cultivated. Core values are implanted and developed. Passion for sports mingled with the great outdoors are ignited and fanned to become endearing nights around council fires. Don't pass up on this once in a lifetime opportunity...it will change your life, FOREVER! RID: 43581

1/27/13   5     5     5     5     5   MGTA is the best camp ever and I'm so happy to be going back! I was a camper a few years ago and had so much fun. I made so many new friends that I still keep in touch with and I also really improved my tennis game. I'm going back as a counselor this summer and can not wait to help kids have the same amazing experience I did! The staff are wonderful and always look out for the campers, the facilities are beautiful and well kept, and the activities are creative and fun for everyone! There's more than just tennis and golf also. They have a gorgeous lake with an excellent waterfront program, arts and crafts, volleyball, and so much more. They even have evening activities for the campers like going mini-golfing! MGTA is definitely worth going to, the summer I spent there was one of the best I've had! You will not be disappointed by MGTA. I've been to many summer camps and I didn't enjoy any of them nearly as much as I did MGTA. I can't wait to be back!! RID: 43499

1/26/13   5     5     5     5     5   I'm so excited to work at Maine Golf and Tennis Academy this summer! I have so many great memories from my summer as a camper 4 years ago. MGTA was an amazing experience for me and I am so excited to come back and help the campers make their own lifelong memories of camp. I made so many great friends at MGTA that I still keep in contact with. Joel and the staff are truly caring and go out of their way to make sure every camper is having fun. I really improved my tennis game at MGTA, due the exceptional coaching that I recieved. I improved so much at MGTA that I actually made my school's Varsity Tennis team as a freshman, which probably never would have happened if I hadn't gotten such great coaching from the staff. In addition to playing golf or tennis there are so many activities that I had a chance to get involved in! Personally I loved going to the lake and arts and crafts. I highly recommend this camp and I am counting down the days until I return again as a counselor this summer! RID: 43494

11/19/12   5     5     5     5     5   I'm a bit horrified with the commentary. Are we talking about the same camp? We have gone to family camp at MGTA for 6 yrs in a row and have been thrilled through and through. A few disgruntled counselors can sabotage any rating. Don't be fooled. This camp is the quintessential old fashioned camp experience coupled with fantastic professional golf and tennis instruction. Everyone is so engaging and fun yet you can set your own pace. You can have around the clock instruction or you can find a quiet moment to relax in your cabin, by the waterfront, in the art or yoga cabin overlooking the gorgeous lake front views. The cabins are old fashioned, charming and rustic camp style and that's why we love it! Campfires, loons, flashlights needed to walk at night, talent show, ropes, mid night golf, water skiing or quiet kayaking, it's really a gem. RID: 43061

The level and amount of golf instruction they received was minimal at best. The other parents and I were shocked by the state of the camp.  9/23/12   5     5     5     5     4   This was by far my son's favorite summer camp, and he has been to many....He loved it so much that he is saving his allowance so that he can attend for longer next year! He loved the activities, met friends from around the world and really improved his tennis game. The staff goes out their way to make sure all the kids have a great time. Plus the location on a beautiful Maine lake is awesome. Great experience all around! RID: 42744

9/10/12   1     2     2     1     1   I've sent my son to this camp for a few summers & I'm done!In 2010 the asst. director & head counselors were awesome! My son felt that there was a great vibe that summer. That admin team left after that summer & the camp has now fallen apart. Cust.service organization, food are awful,a real mess. Transportation, luggage & phone calls the last two summers have been a disaster. Most importantly my kid was unhappy in 2011 but decided to give it another chance and was miserable this past summer. I've talked to other families that sent their kids here and they all agree that the problem is Joel Lavenson, the owner. The kids really dislike him and feel he's aloof and awkward and there is a complete turnover in staff each year because of the way that this man treats them. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD!!! They will randomly charge your card. We got charged $695 for advanced golf that we did not sign up for or agree to. Joel is very dishonest and in my opinion a con man. Stay away! RID: 42646

8/18/12   5     2     5     1     1   I worked at this camp this summer. It is horrible. Half the place is falling down. There was never enough money for food and we kept having leftovers for weeks straight. This camp only wants money they dont care about the kids. They want you to think they do but in reality they just want more money. Before I left camp I over heard some of the kids talking saying that the only reason they came back to this camp was because they loved the staff that worked there even though each year the staff is new. The kids said they didnt want to come back next year just so this place couldnt get any more money and close down. They too have noticed that things arnt how they should be. The director of the camp this year was extremely rude and didnt even know how to handle problems that the staff and kids had. He would just dismiss it or interupt you and would not let you talk. It was a very hard camp to work at. Save yourself some money and bring your kids somewhere else next year. RID: 42422

I highly recommend this camp. RID: 41006
10/7/11   1     1     2     1     1   My son was at this camp during the lice outbreak. I'm not sure if lice is common in the camp world, but we were pretty shocked to get an email from the Directors. A general email to handle a situation like these seems pretty unprofessional. Obviously our son is not going to return next summer. Besides the lice, while our son was at camp 2 of the instructors left and the golf program was left in disarray. RID: 37032

2/18/11   3     1     2     2     1   Initially I had written a long review stating all the specifics as to why this is not the greatest choice for your child. However, I decided to leave it with one simple question. Why is it that almost none of the staff return to this camp? It certainly isnt because they failed but because the working conditions and management are in need of some serious retuning tuning. Just be cautious and ask to speak with returning staff who aren't the owners, golf pros or directors. Chances are they wont be able to provide this... Many great camps exist at a fraction of the marked up costs. RID: 35154
Click to report rating    8/7/10   3     2     2     2     1   I'm not sure why there are 2 seperate reviews for the same camp, but I think I'm reviewing the correct camp. The camp where we sent our son was in Belgrade, Maine. After reading the other reviews, I can agree with a lot of the points made. This is an expensive camp. With the cost of this camp, the expectations are high. I agree that the website-owner do there best to try and get kids to come, and probably oversold the camp. The camp itself is a little rough. The cabins are old but functional. The main problem was the amount of golf instruction that was given. Our son isn't a real serious golfer and even he wanted more golf. Other than that, the program was OK. Won't send him back to this program, but I think he had some fun. RID: 33645

10/26/09   5     5     5     5     5   This is an excellent camp. It is the perfect blend of high end instruction and traditional camp activities.  10/19/09   5     5     5     5     5   I was the Assistant Director of Tennis at MGTA in 2008. My personal experience as an employee was exceptional. The camp is first rate through and through. Safety, fun, and learning were the priorities of our programs. The camp itself has the facilities and programs to keep the campers entertained all day. The owner sees to it that the camp and campers are safe at all times. This is the premier Golf and Tennis Camp in the country for good reason...The coaching and technology available to the campers is exceptional. RID: 31372

10/16/09   4     4     4     5     4   I am currently employed by the camp and have been with Joel and Crista for the past 3 years. I can say with certainty that the statements on this page are false and outrageous. From what I have seen in my time at the camp, the kids are happy and enjoying themselves. There are frequent activities and trips for them to participate in and lots of time for them to have fun with new friends. If they kids didn't like the place, why would so many of them come back? MGTA is not the prison camp that some people make it out to be. We try our best to provide sound sports coaching, rounded with fun activities and play time. RID: 31336

10/15/09   5     5     5     5     5   I have been involved with this orginization for the past 6 years and I see nothing but positive results in every department. Some of these negetive postings are completely unfair, just becasue it seems like a student had a bad experience with another camper they let it negate their whole attitude twards the summer. We have to remember when reading some of the postings that some of these children are used to getting what ever they want and can not deal with a little authority. I can personally vouch for not only the management but the employees as well that MGTA is nothing but professinal in every aspect, and anything that is not up to par they will go above and beyond to make it right. Definatly work taking a look into for your child and I definatly would read too much into theses negetive comments that oviously have no idea what they are thanking about. Thanks for reading, and keep on smiling. RID: 31329

10/5/09   5     5     5     5     5   The facilities at this camp are excellent. The greens are very well-maintained and value is placed on finding PGA level, superior instructors that love working with kids of all ages. I was impressed by the courts as well. The tradition of clay courts is nice. I would have liked less rain this season, as that slowed down some activities for my child, such as the boating events, but alternative activities were made available. The staff was helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this camp. RID: 31227

10/3/09   5     5     5     5     5   The Maine Golf & Tennis Camp epitomizes what summer camp life is all about for girls and boys, ages 8-17. Activities supervised by an experienced and caring staff along with superb management make MGTC a worthwhile choice for parents who want a worry free place to send their children. Golf, tennis, and ice hockey are core camp sports, but many other activities are available. Your child will receive top notch instruction in the sport or sports of their choice. Rest assured your children will be chaperoned appropriately by responsible counselors at this coed camp. Girls and boys live in separate cabins which are clean and well maintained. Healthy foods are served at mealtime and beverages are regularly available to maintain hydration. Children attending camp come from places all over the world giving your child an opportunity to interact with people of different cultures, making Maine Golf and Tennis Camp a rewarding experience your child will never forget.  11/30/08   5     5     5     5     5   i don't understand why some reviews are so low. I have been to this camp for 3 years, and am going back for my 4th. The staff is unbeatable, with all them trying to please each individual camper. The Golf facilities are top of the line with great golf pros. I am a golfer, so i don't get to see much of the tennis side of things, but from what i hear, they too are great. The activity selection is giant. We could choose from golf, tennis, waterfront, ping pong, and all of the other awsome camp activities. I also feel that each camper gets an unbelievable amount of attention. My son went to this camp last summer and we were upset with his experience. My son son is a pretty good golfer and plays in high school, he didn't recieve any real instruction with his swing. That sounds crazy, but it's true. He came home without really changing his swing or improving his game. The facility was good for practice, but he didn't get to play much golf on golf courses. The other activities were so-so. The staff tried to be helpful, but with the program in place there wasn't much they could do. We sent him for two weeks and we were just glad it wasn't longer.  11/12/07   1     2     1     1     1   My son attended this camp last summer. It was a very negitive experience for him. He went for what was supposed to be the best Tennis program in the country and it was a complete disappointment. The pro who we had been put in touch with over the winter was no longer on the staff and they had not even had the decency to inform of that in advance. The tennis program was completely disorganized and inferior. How this camp ever received the #1 rating from Sports Ilustrated for Kids is a complete mystery. They in no way deserve it. It is extremely expensive and the fact that they require you to spend over $500 for camp uniforms is obsurd. It is on a beautiful lake in Maine but they don't seem to take advantage of it. I heard almost nothing about the other activities and very little good about the councelors or staff. The food was bad. They did not even give the kids dessert. Cabins not very nice. Showers far away. Take our advise stay away from this overrated and overpriced camp. RID: 17000

The Management made her summer awful. Teenagers are teenagers. They did not allows my daughter to be herself. If boys and girls held hands or hugged they got into trouble. She will NOT be returning. Golf instruction was mediocre, they hit off of matts which are bad for your back. There is another camp in Saltsburg, PA. US GOLF CAMPs I will send her there next summer to have a real summer. She has too little time to be social during the school year with the workload, she deserves to have a little fun over the summer. If your child is above the age of 12 do not send them to this camp. The activities are beyond boring where it gets to the point that people fall asleep, the nurse will give you a band aid if you have a fever, the staff is rude, there are no normal girls, the guys are losers, and rude, The kids are obnoxious, insulting, and so is the staff. I did not improve in my sport, and I wasted my summer! WORST CAMP EVER! RID: 15208
Click to report rating    9/1/07   1     1     5     1     1   worst summer experience ever. i received several prejudiced remarks and the whole time i wanted to go home because everyone there was ****y, anorexic and the camp just facilitated it. Surprisingly enough they asked me to be a counselor there. The only good part was the tennis. My tennis improved so much at that camp because i had the choice to play for 5 hours a day. If you found the right coach and set goals you could achieve so much. The awards were idiotic a girl who was the worst sport who i hated playing with because i felt so bad each time i beat her because she would cry and swear in another language won the Sportsmanship award. But I would never go back there. RID: 14796
Click to report rating    2/2/07   1     2     2     1     1   I have to concur with the previous two postings. I sent my son to camp here last summer and I was disappointed in the overall value and experience the camp offered. He was unhappy with the food and the cabin conditions were not what you see on the website. Although he did not lose any weight, because he was only there 2 weeks, he came home talking about other campers who had lost weight due to the poor food. Additionally, he complained that the greens were extremely slow therefore practicing was of no value. The website definitely oversells the camp and don't believe everything you read. At this price, I was expecting much more. RID: 7454

1/31/07   1     1     2     1     1   My son attended this camp in the summer of 2006. I have to agree with the other reviews. This camp's website is a little over the top with it's description of the camp. This camp is very expensive, and at this price the food, facility, and instruction should be better. My son was probably most disappointed with the golf courses that he played and the amount of instruction he was given. I really didn't get much feedback on other activities other than golf. My impression of the camp was that it's a nice spot in Maine, but the camp itself could use some work. RID: 7386
Click to report rating    8/5/06   1     2     2     1     1   My son just returned from two weeks at this camp. The only good thing that can be said about it is that there is reasonable golf instruction available. The website for this camp misrepresents the physical facility. The picture of the cabin is NOT remotely like the cabin my son was in. There was bullying going on at the camp and the counselors did nothing about it. The food was poor. The camp is small and the facilities are run down. There are many international campers, which some may feel is a plus, but it made for a great deal of difficulty socially. Overall, my son (age 11) played golf morning, noon, and night since the other programs were really not well developed. This camp is very expensive so I expected my son to play golf on several local courses. He played on one course that was very small with only par 3 holes. He said "it looked like they put flags up in someone's backyard." You'd be better off spending your $$ on golf lessons. Much better off. RID: 1829
