After months of communication with CPC's Director regarding a camper's status with her diabetes that I was scholarshipping, and having my checks received and cashed, never once was I told there could be a problem accepting her for camp. The day before camp, I met with the camp director and nurse to make a plan. Again, no one indicated any problem with accepting her as a camper. Her family is poor so it was a hardship to buy clothing, etc. so she could attend camp. Her grandparents brought her to camp as instructed by the Camp Director. When they arrived, they were told she couldn't attend camp because the staff couldn't keep her safe. Her diabetes doctor OK'ed her being at camp because she is absolutely on top of her diet and insulin. That information was ignored. This little girl and family were insulted and humiliated by the camp medical officer. Multiple excuses and finger pointing ensued, but no one accepted responsibility for the unnecessary trauma to this little girl.

I worked at Circle Pines for a few summers. It is a unique place. There aren't state-of-the-art facilities, but I think having such things is often a big mistake on the part of traditional camps. Circle Pines is a co-op, and the emphasis is on cooperation. The activities are unique. While there are sports and arts and crafts, for example, there are also morning work projects, discussion groups, and more. The activities are only limited by the imagination of the campers and counselors! It's not regimented at all. Plus, the small size (less than 80 campers) makes it the perfect place for kids with developmental disabilities, such as Asperger's Syndrome or Down Syndrome. It is also multi-racial and multi-cultural. Additionally, there are a lot of openly gay, gender variant, and other "queer" people at the camp. What a wonderful place to send your child for a unique camping experience, where they can just be themselves in a non-judgmental setting!
