Camp Ton-A-Wandah is a spectacular place to spend three weeks of my summer. It has been family-owned since 1933 and little to nothing around camp has changed since then. They offer a myriad of different activities like riflery, rock climbing, archery, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, gymnastics, cheerleading, etc. No matter what you like, there is definitely something at camp for you! Tribes, now called nations, are competitive groups where campers young and old compete to win the session-wide competition as a group. The cabins are split into three sections based on age- hillside, lakeside, and hilltop. Facilities include twenty camper cabins, each with around eight bunks and restrooms with two toilets and sinks. Showers are separate, but never far from the cabins. Evening programs are spectacular activities that keep you busy and having fun. I have been a camper at TAW for six years and I have made lifelong bonds from my experiences there. We love camp!

Camp Ton-a-Wandah is the best! I have loved all four years that I have been here. The staff is caring, and will do anything to make your experience better. I love all of the variety in activities. Some of the activities I did were pottery, cooking, rock climbing, and so many more!! Another reason this camp is unique is the tribes. I am a Navajo (which is the best tribe). Everyone here is deeply rooted to their tribes and I like that they are passed down in your family. The food is really good, and my favorite meal is probably on the first day, when Captain Billy grilled burgers. Camp really allows me to explore my faith. We sing a blessing every meal, and we have service on Sundays in the Chapel. Evening programs are GREAT! They are all really cool but some of my favorites are color war, counselor hunt, and the talent show. The dance with Camp Carolina is also really fun. Yes, camp isn't as modern, so to speak, but I wouldn't trade my memories for anything! I can't wait for next year!

I just finished my 6th year at camp. Camp has been an icredible experience for me. I am a third generation camper, my grandmother and my mother both attended it and loved it. I feel that I am so lucky to have experienced the things that I have. Where else can you learn how to shoot a bow and arrow, or take a woodburning class? They have a new kitchen staff this year, and the food is great. The lake is okay, but it isn't that bad. You get used to it after you go swimming once or twice, and the showers are new this year and there is hot water and great pressure in all of the showers. I think that my favorite part of camp is the tribes. I am a proud Mohawk and I enjoy all of the tribe events. I have made lifelong friendships that even last throughout the year. Camp also holds meet ups for certain areas where you can see your camp friends. I am incredibly honored to call this place my home and can't wait to return for summers to come.

My daughter just finished her 6th summer at TAW. It has become her second home, her happy place. She started as a 5th grader and is now a confident 10th grader ready to be a CIT next summer. I can't say enough about the counselors, staff, and her cabin mates. These girls have been together since they were in elementary school and just finished their Laurel year. They have formed a friendship and bond that is incredibly special. These are life long friendships. What a great experience. Camp has taught my daughter so much. TAW allows each girl to be who they are without judgement. You know it's a good experience for them when you come to pick them up on closing day and after three weeks together they are crying and clinging to each other because they don't want to leave this special place. Send your daughter there...it is definitely not just a place but a place in your daughter's heart.

My daughter has attended TAW since the summer after third grade. She is now a senior in high school, and a junior counselor this year at TAW. She has truly loved her time at TAW. All of the experiences she had as a camper have helped her develop into a young woman who is able to easily get along with others, understand the meaning of compromise, adapt to new surroundings (this will definitely come in handy next year when she leaves for college!), and is confident in her own abilities. We continue to drop her off, even though she is long past needing us, because we too love to see the friends we've made over the years, as well as the incredible beauty of Hendersonville. Overall, I can't say enough about what a positive experience this has been for our entire family.

Counselors liked to push their authority on campers to make themselves feel superior. Mandatory swim classes included being forced into a freezing cold filthy lake, and then being forced into showers with water so cold that it hurt your skin. I went on a mountaineering trip and our tents were rained out, we slept on the ground under a tarp and rather than be picked up and taken back to camp, we stayed in pisgah and all got sick. One very small girl was so cold and shaking so violently some of us thought she was getting hypothermia; her lips were a blue-purple color and they still didn't take us back. Every night after our evening activity, we would all have to stand in a circle and hold hands, and even though I was afraid of germs I was required to participate anyway. A passive agrressive girl in my cabin hated me though I had done nothing to provoke her and smeared toothpaste all over our bathroom door, blaming me. She used to steal clothes from around the room and put them in my suit

I wanted so desperately to love TAW. I attended the camp for two summers and absolutely loved the surrounding beauty, the many adventures I had on outings, the tribe competitions, and the friendly counselors. However, like another reviewer mentioned, I found the other campers to be spoiled, judgmental, and exclusive in their friend circles. We were 12, but that didn't stop my cabin mates from waking up and applying make up every morning. On the advanced mountaineering backpacking trip there was constant complaining about how it was not possible that anyone could actually hike for fun. I guess I headed into camp expecting other kids that were up for adventure and making new friends. Instead I found a group of girly girls that were more interested in discovering who had the biggest yacht (an actual conversation from my cabin) than actually helping new campers feel included. It often felt like I was in the midst of a middle school popularity contest. This camp was sadly not for me.

Camp Ton A Wandah is a fabulous all girls camp in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. After being a long time camper and counselor (15 summers) at another camp I had high expectations when choosing a camp for my daughters. I knew I wanted North Carolina so I set out visiting camps. The minute you drive through Ton A Wandah's gates property you see and feel the beauty. My daughters immediately felt at home and told me this was going to be their camp. 2015 will be their 4th summer at camp. They count down the days to when they can go 'home.' The cabins are rustic, but have electricity and toilets. Walking to a wash house for showers Is a normal part of camp. The kitchen accommodates our food allergies which is very important for us. My younger daughter loves the daily riding program. As a parent who entrusts her two daughters to them for a month each summer I highly recommend this camp. My girls do have one complaint: we will only send them for one month each summer!

This is a wonderful summer camp in North Carolina. My daughter has attended since age 6 and will be there for her 10th birthday this year! She is so very excited to be able to spend her birthday in her favorite place in the world. Camp Ton-A-Wandah offers a real "old school" girls summer camp experience. No cell phones and tablets and computers just nature and good friends a perfect summer combination giving the girls a chance to discover themselves. As far as yellow swimsuits and separate showers.... well yea it's nature, there's plenty of time the rest of the year for perfectly chlorinated swimming pools and Jacuzzi bathtubs! No complaints here!

I absolutely loved my experience at TAW. I'm a third generation Ton-A-Wandah girl. I could not have asked for anything more. I'm still in contact with a lot of girls from my session. It wasn't clique-y and everyone was so down to earth. I've seen a couple reviews about the lake being gross, which is true but you're experiencing nature. I found it authentic. Girls have autonomy, they get to choose which classes they sign up for. There are a huge variety of classes offered. I loved doing activities with my tribe and they had really great evening programs. Billy and Judy and the whole staff made being away from home so easy. I gained so much confidence by being at TAW. I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to attend. Like they always say "it's not just a place, it's a place in your heart."

Like the other review my daughter came home with yellow bathing suits and said that she hated to swim in the lake. She did not like the riding program because the instructers couldnt care less about whether she learned something or not. Also she was in the advanced mountaineering class and decided to go on the overnight trip in Piskah national forest. It rained during the night and while the counsolers slept peacefully in their big tent the girls were getting drenched along with their belongings because they were forced to sleep under tarps. The next day half of the girls went home without completing the trip because they felt sick. Overall the camp was okay but my daughter is going to a different camp this year.

Overall, my daughter enjoyed this camp. The food was good and the counselors were nice. One of the only problems about this camp was the lake-weed. My daughter came home with yelow bathing suits (stained from the lakeweed). She never swam at free-swim and dreaded swim class (mandatory). They even make the kids clean out the lake during canoe class. Also she found the girls to be rather clicky and spoiled. She also did not get to ride horses as much as she would have liked to . Everyday riding was an extra cost. she only got to ride 3 times in her three week session. Also the girls were a little braggy about what they recieved in their packages. Another thing that she did not enjoy were the showers. There are no showers in the cabin. Instead campers have to walk to them. The staff forces them to take five minute showers because there is not enough showers for everyone in the camp. All of the showers are freezing cold and vary in pressure (from a slight drip to a hose).

Camp Ton-A-Wandah is a wonderful traditional summer camp for girls in the blueridge mountians of NC. Steeped in tradition, girls return year after year to greet friends and enjoy the cool mountain breezes. Our family has been attending for 3 generations and will soon be four! Camp TAW offers a "real" camp experience and hasn't become a country club for pampered children like many others older camps. If you are looking for a place where your girls can be girls TAW is the place!
