My son has been going to this camp for 8 years, it's awesome. He started as a rising first grader and is now a rising 9th grader. His favorite things about this camp is that he can choose to go from one activity to the next without a set schedule. If he wants to stay in the creek all day then he can, if he wants to zip line or do archery, he does it. He was so excited once he got old enough to go into the deeper part of the creek. If you are concerned about your child and water just tell the owner, Eric. He will inform the staff and they'll pay extra attention to your child. Every summer I ask my son which camps he wants to do and even when our budget is small he always chooses this camp, his number one choice. He loves amphibian week and learned a lot about snakes. My son always gives me feedback about the staff at every camp he's ever been to. He hated Vandy Camp and YMCA camp because he said the workers just talked to each other and ignored campers. He loves the workers here.

I write this in hopes that parents will travel the 1 hour BEFORE sending their children to this camp. The couple that owns and runs the camp are both intelligent, kind people however, they have a very loose style of parenting that permeates the style of camp that they run. If you are ok with a camp that has zero structure then you might be ok with Idyllwild. As one staffer put it, "they eat when they want, and clean up if they want." There is a bridge crossing the river that does not have siderails. If a child should happen to fall, they would fall directly into the creek. There are deeper parts of the creek where children are not required to wear a lifevest. On TWO occasions, I personally saw the lifegaurd take her attention away from the children for more than a minute. Apart from the obvious safety issues, they are understaffed. If your 5 year old needs help packing up at the end of the day, they will not have anyone there to help them. NOT a good camp for young children.

Camp Idyllwild is one of the best day camps in the Nashville area for children (elementary age kids). They have a very low camper to counselor ratio (about 5 to 1) and a lot of unique nature activities - focusing on appreciation of nature, the environment and the arts. The counselors are very experienced - mostly educators with 4 year or graduate degrees...you can tell they all love to be with the kids, and love to be outdoors. The camp director is wonderful, and has formal naturalist training. The camp has a phenomenal creek front area for kids to play in, swim, and catch critters. They provide wholesome snacks, not junk food and also provide busing to and from camp - very convenient for working parents! If you are looking for a smaller, more intimate day camp environment in a beautiful setting, consider Camp Idyllwild! They have a website: www.campidyllwild.com
