Click to report rating    2/26/18   5     3     4     5     5   My daughter had a wonderful experience at the 2017 junior session. She performed a solo with piano, rehearsed and performed with both a chamber group and full orchestra, and had individual private lessons. They attended a full ballet and lots of concerts by fellow students, teachers and other professionals. She went rafting for the first time and had fun doing the usual camp activities. She loved finding like minded serious music students to bond with and great camp counselors and teachers to learn from. The living facilities are rustic, but clean and maintained. She enjoyed the freedom to practice, hang out with friends or participate in activities during rec time. RID: 51674

The faculty, students performance opportunities, concert attendance, music lessons, chamber music - so many great things in a beautiful setting! RID: 51107

7/14/17   1     1     2     1     1   My son has gone to the junior session of this camp four years in a row. Over the last year the menagement had fallen apart. Any decent staff quits after a few months. This year I received a call from the staff asking for medical forms and I can honestly say I have never been treated more rudly before than by this particular camp counselor. My son hated his time there because of how rude mean and inconsiderate the counselors were. The music teachers are good overall but do play favorite with their children giving them better seating in music groups even when of limited ability. Also, as evidenced by the website, this year the camp seems focused more than ever on showcasing the teachers, making kids sit through teachers conveys night after night instead of making the paint kids enjoy their time off after practicing all day. The attention of the menagement is all on the teachers who want the opportunity to show off and not on the kids whose parents pay a fortune to send there. RID: 51014
Click to report rating    8/17/16   5     3     5     4     3   Since my company began cleaning the camp this summer it's a lot better. Less cob webs and debris around. We pay attention to details and its 90% cleaner than it was when we arrived in July. Hoping to really clean it up before it opens in 2017 and then a big difference will be seen. Be sure to tell them to hire us next year and you will see. RID: 49972
Click to report rating    8/4/15   5     5     5     5     5   Our daughter attended this camp in 2008 and again last year and this year2015. This camp is great and was great when she attended the junior session way back in '08. I see people complain about the restroom facilities... Well then, do not attend a camp deliberately in he wooded environment of the Adirondacks. It's rustic, period. Something I believe children need more of these days. With Elizabeth Pitcairn at the helm, we see LMC heading to bring out the best in students musical performance. The attention to hard work and rounding the student off with a day of rest(nonmusical) lends itself to five stars. The faculty is well trained and the students surrender electronics to have a more engaging experience with other musicians as well as a better opportunity to connect with the music performance presented in this condensed amount of time. Three cheers for Luzerne Music Center and all that support this musical retreat for our young, budding, musicians! If our daughter was not too RID: 48998
Click to report rating    7/22/13   5     3     4     5     5   My son just completed the junior session B (2 weeks). He's had such a wonderful experience that he's already set his mind on going back next summer for the full junior session (4 weeks). As a parent, I particularly like the fact that LMC has a high-caliber faculty and a diverse student body with international flavor. The setting is naturally beautiful. The facility is a bit old and has a rustic feel, but that doesn't bother me or my son. The music programs (both solo and chamber) are great. My son normally practices at home no more than 1 hour each day. He practiced 4 to 6 hours a day while at LMC. There is some magic about LMC. RID: 45307
Click to report rating    2/2/13   5     3     5     5     5   I attended LMC for 3 seasons back in the late 90's and have been actively involved with the camp ever since. LMC remains one of the fondest memories of my adolescence and I am still close with the friends I made there. The instructors are first-rate musicians who put the needs of their students first. While the facilities certainly are in need for some upgrade, the rustic nature of the camp is what made LMC so special. Students were forced to use their imaginations and be creative without the modern-day distractions that we have become so accustomed to. I would highly recommend LMC to any student who wanted to be part of a special musical experience that will make a lasting impact. RID: 43548

Click to report rating    1/23/13   5     5     5     5     5   This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I have kept in touch with the musicians I met at camp. I improved so much as a musician and this camp introduced me to what it might be like to be a part of a musical community as an adult. Bert and Toby have really made something special and I was so glad to have this experience and the white water rafting trip was pretty fun too. RID: 43478
Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     5     5     5     5   I attended LMC many years ago for 5 years as a camper. Not only did I develop lifelong friendships with my fellow campers, my experiences at LMC helped shape me into the musician and person I am today. I always felt at home and myself at LMC. The faculty are all wonderful - they are very nurturing - and there are so many opportunities to see/hear/interact with amazing musicians (ex- trips to see Philadelphia Orchestra play at SPAC). It is a truly special and unique place...and I plan on sending my (future) children there one day! RID: 43461
Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     5     5     5     5   If you're looking to play music at the highest level with some of the best staff/teachers in the country while having the Adirondack Mountains as your backdrop and a couple master classes with the Philidelphia Orchestra sprinked on top, this is the place for you. I grew up on Long Island and being out of the suburbs/city for the summer playing music and meeting friends that will last a lifetime was one of the best decisions I have ever made. RID: 43460
Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     5     5     5     5   I attended Luzerne several years ago, and the camp continues to be an amazing place where lifetime friendships are formed, and personal growth can be realized. The staff is capable and committed, and many of them were once Luzerne campers. You would be doing yourself and your child a favor by allowing him or her to participate in such an amazing experience. Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     5     5     5     5   Luzerne Music Center is a wonderful place for an aspiring young musician to spend a few weeks. I am an alumni and I spent the best summers of my life at Luzerne. It is a fantastic balance of intensive music study and the traditional summer camp experience. Not many other summer music camps have the charm of Luzerne. The staff comes from professional orchestras and colleges around the country. The town of Lake Luzerne is near Lake George and is very safe and welcoming area. The camp has a partnership with the New York State Department of Health and continues to maintain safety and health regulations. I highly recommend Luzerne Music Center for young first time campers and experienced student musicians alike. RID: 43457
Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     5     5     5     5   It is a wonderful camp with a very talented faculty. The setting is beautiful, and it is very well run. As an alumni I cannot say enough positive things. I wish I was still young enough to participate. RID: 43456
Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     4     5     5     5   This camp was a great overall experience for me as a camper, socially and musically. I learned a diversified body of repertoire from solo to chamber music to orchestral that has helped me tremendously in my career. My cabin mates and I are still friends. Even though they didn't all go into music, they continue to love it, and our fun times there together bonded us for life. I particularly remember the times the camp took us to hear the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and hear Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman. The skit nights, banquets, white water rafting, campfires and ice cream trips to Papa's were so much fun. Some of my happiest summers were spent at Luzerne. I felt very nurtured, and supported and not at all afraid to perform, because that is the kind of atmosphere that makes up the philosophy of the camp. There are so many performance opportunities for the students, and everyone gets to perform. RID: 43455
Click to report rating    1/22/13   5     4     5     5     5   Luzerne Music Center is a wonderfully enriching environment for children to learn, grow and enjoy making music. The teachers are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for your child. RID: 43453
Click to report rating    1/7/13   5     3     5     4     5   My 12-year old son attended for two weeks summer 2012. His experience was wonderful. The location, food, diversity of activities and expertise of the staff were all high points. In his words "Luzerne Music Center was my favorite place to go summer of 2012." This is significant as it beat out Scout Camp -- which was also great. The cabins are rustic, but there is a plan to upgrade many of the facilities. To be honest, if they were too modern it wouldn't be the same Adirondack experience the campers relish. My son also said "At first when I got to Luzerne I thought that it would be eat, sleep, and drink music but it really was not. It’s more of a musically enriched, amazing summer camp. I say this because after about four hours of music in a day you are somewhat free to do what you want. That means they have other things to do after you were done practicing or done playing in orchestra or in a lesson." He made many friends -- and is still in contact with several of them! RID: 43341
Click to report rating    12/16/12   3     1     3     2     3   This is not a "knee jerk" reaction to the Newtown tragedy.Coincidentally,we were in the process of making a final decision regarding summer music camps and had decided against a return to LMC. Now like parents everywhere we are trying to create a safety net that allows our children to have the independence they need to grow while remaining safe. The concerns that we have include the primitive nature of the cabins (even by "camp standards.") including the fact that the the kids live separately from the counselors, and must leave their cabin alone in the middle of the night if they need to go to the bathroom. It is worrisome that when we take the kids and their friends, for dinner outings we are never asked for picture ID Most times we sign the kids back in without any person of authority to again determine our identity. We have been told about the capital campaign but it won't come in time for our two kids. RID: 43228
Click to report rating    12/15/12   4     2     3     3     3   The living accommodations can be improved. The cabins were very warm and stuffy after the doors were closed at night. Some students brought their own fans. The fans should be provided by the camp. Or ceiling fans can be installed. The restroom areas need to be cleaner. RID: 43219
Click to report rating    12/12/12   5     4     5     5     5   This is a one of a kind music camp. The staff are caring and excellent.Members of the Philadelphia Orchestra send their students to the camp and give coaching sessions and master classes. There is a high rate of returning students because quality of instruction and group participation is emphasized. I would tell any child about this camp and I have sent many students to Luzerne over the years. The cabins are rustic and great for a growth experience. RID: 43204
Click to report rating    7/14/12   4     5     5     5     5   My 12 year old daughter had a wonderful time at the junior session. Great musical experience and good balance between music and recreation. Food was healthy and good. The campus was very clean. The students were exposed to great music. Would highly reccomend this camp. RID: 41711
Click to report rating    6/3/12   3     1     1     2     3   My son spent two weeks in ths camp in 2010. Let me start by telling you that he saw rats racing in the dining hall. The food is disgusting, nothing is really cooked on premises, frozen burgers and frozen French fries, gross overly sweet punch, frozen pizza. Makes me sick just to remember the visitors day when parent were invited to enjoy the cook out, we had to pay for it, too. The swimming is not possible as the water is very cold and the muddy. The facilities are overly rustic to say the least, kids have to go outside of the cabin to use the bathroom. One night was a horrible storm, thunder, pouring rain, my child was sick and could not even go outside. He also was sick to the point of fainting from dehydration. Some days were very, very hot, with temperatures going to 100 degrees, he did not get enough water. He made good friends there, fortunately. As there is absolutely nothing to do in recreation periods, all they had was a ball, kids had to come up with their own ideas of RID: 41189
Click to report rating    10/27/11   2     1     2     2     2   Have mixed feelings about this camp: Musically, staff good, attention to campers' needs, bad. Music program, good; all other camp programs, unsatisfactory. Facilities not good, food not good, housekeeping not good. Staff trained musically, but not for other activities needed for camper "recreation". If first time camp experience, look elsewhere--could traumatize young ones. If serious musician, might consider it, but there are better alternatives in NE. Conductors seemed to have favorites early on and highlighted these students with solos at performance time. If above problems addressed, camp has lots of potential. Beautiful setting and location. Use caution if considering this camp---may not be right for your camper. RID: 37156
